Prompt:

After being separated from Sonic during an all out attack from Eggman to Sonic, Amy wandered around before stumbling upon a volcano and receiving an Emerald.

Unable to know where to go next, the heat starts to overcome her, and she thinks she sees Sonic up ahead, following him out of the volcano.

However, when her head is clearer, she notices that the figure she was following wasn't Sonic at all, but Shadow!

Desperate for company and someone to guide her to Sonic, she races to him and discloses she needs to get the emerald to Sonic, and asks him to help her find him.

Shadow, already having collected some Emeralds, is trying to collect all of them for his own purposes, but has been unable to find Metal Sonic, who once again betrayed Eggman and started collecting Emeralds on his own.

Hoping to use Amy as bait, Shadow agrees to 'help' her, and guides her up a mountain, straight to Metal Sonic's rushed fortress base…

"I'm sure lucky I found you, Shadow!" Amy continues to climb and keep the trail behind him, as he moves a branch out of his way, looking down at her, before away as if to hide his guilt.

"It's not much farther now…" he muttered, continuing up. "I'm sure your friend has picked up the signal of a moving Chaos Emerald. They'll know you're here…"

"Ah! Good point!" Amy nods and is able to make it up the rocky terrain after him, before bouncing up and walking by his side, leaning forward to try and get a good look at his face.

She places her hands behind her back and smiles up towards him.

He gives her side glances, not sure what she's doing.

"What are you staring at?" He finally states, as she backs away with a cheeky grin.

"Oh, nothing~ I just think… you know…. you're a lot nicer than you seem." She gives him a friendly wink.

He's a little startled by that, and stops to give her more attention. "…Kind?"

"Yes!" Amy sways her hands as she notices his stop, and then how he looked down and away from her. "Haha! You seem awfully shy too at times. Shadow? Why are you always dipping your head away from me-?" She moves in front of him to try and see his face again, but he quickly swipes a hand out.

'I can't let her affect me like this…' Shadow cautions himself, 'If I'm going to betray her… I can't get involved with her.'

"Keep your distance. You seem to fail to recall how dangerous I really am." Shadow walked passed her, as she turned and pouted.

"Stick in the mud!" she put her hands on her hips, and followed after him.

A figure moved in the trees…

Shadow's ears perked and turned, as he looked around the area, scanning…

He was distracted by yet another leap of Amy into his frame of eye.

"You've gotta stop pushing people away! Haha!" She tapped her feet, seeming in good spirits now that she wasn't alone anymore. "Everyone deserves to be seen in a different light. Just because you were created the way you are, doesn't mean you have to give into a harsher nature. Shadow! I just know you have a good heart! Deep down inside, you really want to help people with your power, don't you?" She placed both hands up in fists, before gesturing them around, almost demanding attention in the most simplest and cutest way.

He stared at her a moment, unbelieving of her words and view on him and humanity…

He quickly snapped out of it when he heard a twig snap, and turned from her. 'He's here…'

"Hey! Shadow? I won't be ignored!" She stomped forward, upset he kept dodging her like this.

"…I'm not as kind as you think."

"H-huh?"

Shadow zipped around and grabbed her arm, pulling her and holding her facing forward, out in front of him.

"H-hey! What are you!?" She turned her head side to side, having him grip her arm to where she couldn't move now. "Shadow!?"

"I've got the girl. She's of value to Sonic." Shadow looked around, unable to sense it's presence now… "If you hand over a Chaos Emerald. She's yours."

"Ah! W-what!?"

Metal Sonic's engine flared to life, and he zoomed with a wind blast out of the foliage of the trees.

He slowly hovered in the air, looming over the two, before slowly descending to the ground, and finally, lightly places his feet down.

"…S…Shadow…" Amy suddenly realized, in great fear, what he was doing.

She kicked and was able to squirm out of his grasp, moving away from him, and in the center of the two.

She stepped back, holding her hands together, looking to him. "You… you used me?"

"….I needed that Chaos Emerald."

"You're delivering another one to him! Don't you see?! This hurts both sides now!"

Metal roared his engine further, glaring his eyes down even more so.

Shadow nodded, and then lowered his head.

Metal pulled out an emerald.

Amy looked behind her, gasping, before turning angrily back to Shadow. "I stand by what I said!"

His expression suddenly changed.

"What..you said?" his eyes shook slightly, every few seconds apart. "What do you mean..?"

"Everyone can be good, and everyone can choose their own heart's path! No direction is set in stone." Amy shook her head, before turning to Metal Sonic, and rubbing her thumb against her pointer finger… her hand down by her side.

"…Amy?"

In amazement, he saw her summon her hammer, and stepped forward.

"You fool! With the Chaos Emeralds, he's far too powerful to resist!"

"…I don't care." Amy held her head down. "…Sonic wouldn't want me to just stand by and do nothing to stop this… you may have deceived me, Shadow. But I don't live according to other's fates!"

"…Other's… fates?" Shadow straightened up, and stepped back. 'This girl…'

Metal roared again, a threat…

"I'm not afraid of you anymore!" Amy got ready to battle, as he charged forward, reeling a metallic arm back with spiked claws for fingers..!

Shadow twitched, as if wanting to aid, but held his ground on his decision.

"Ah!"

Amy was thrust back, knocked out, and carried over Metal's shoulders. He now held her Chaos Emerald, looking down at it.

"You… You have the girl, now hand over the Emerald!" Shadow, ready to battle, and hoping to swipe both Amy's and Metal Sonic's emeralds now, waited for his moment.

Now that it had come, he raced forward, but Metal just looked up with a cold stare, and flew speedily upwards.

"What?" Shadow looked up before covering his eyes from the gust of dust spraying in his eyes.

"Metal Sonic!" he cried out, as Metal taunted him by tossing the Emerald up and down, before swiping it from the air and bursting off.

Amy held her knees in her cage, softly wiping tears from her eyes and muzzle, as she recounted being tricked and betrayed…

Suddenly, a giant blast exploded the door behind her, and in a gasp, she scurried away before seeing a figure in the cloud of dust…

"S…Sonic!" Amy raced forward through the smoke, and gripped him in an everlasting hug!

…..

"Huh?" She blinked as the smoke cleared… realizing he didn't respond to her.

She looked up.

"Ah!"

"…We're leaving." Shadow stated, grabbing her and throwing her over his shoulder.

"H-hey!"

Too late, the robots Metal Sonic had control over raced after him.

"Tsk." He scowled, seeing he wasn't able to get it.

"Wait… you're not… getting the emerald?" Amy looked down at him.

"…I found myself in a different direction."

He didn't look at her, but he could hear her cry of shock, and knew she was smiling.
