Alex had parted ways with Yusei and everyone else after Greiger was defeated and was heading towards the old reactor. It's time Roman. I'm coming at you with everything I've got and more, Alex thought to himself. He looked behind him and saw Kalin's mark of the giant floating in the sky. Good luck Yusei, he thought to himself.

Timeskip

Yusei had defeated Kalin and activated the control unit. "That's two Dark Signers down and three to go," Yusei said. Suddenly one of Roman's spiders landed on Trudge, putting him under the Dark Signer's control. "Yusei Fudo," he said as he turned to face the Signer. "What do you want Roman?" Yusei asked. "Nothing much, just to invite you to watch the final duel of your friend Alex before he becomes a Dark Signer," Roman answered. "He'll defeat you," Yusei said. "We shall see. If you want to see our duel, I suggest you hurry, your friend will arrive at my location before too long," Roman said before releasing his influence on Trudge.

"Yusei, do you think Alex will win?" Luna asked. "I'm sure of it," he responded. I hope 'm right, because if Alex loses, we may never win this war, he thought to himself. Meanwhile Alex had arrived on site and opened a path using a device Goodwin had given him before he left New Domino. "Here I come Roman, ready or not," Alex said before he entered.

He followed the path and wound up in a room he recognized from when Roman had captured him during the Fortune Cup. "Come out Roman, it's time to settle this," Alex called out. "Indeed, it is," Roman's voice said before he walked out of the shadows. "Before we duel, I want an answer. The last time we met you said something about I deal I made," Alex said.

"Indeed. Although you yourself didn't make the deal, your past self did," Roman responded. "What do you mean my past self?" Alex asked. "All in due time. I sense your friends are arriving, why not greet them? Follow me to the location of our final duel," Roman said. "Fine, but know that if your leading me into a trap I'll eliminate you," Alex warned.

Roman turned and led him to a rope bridge that spanned a large chasm. Alex walked to the other end and prepared himself to duel. "Alex!" Yusei shouted. Alex turned to where the voice came from and saw Yusei, Crow, Luna, Leo, and Trudge running towards him. "Stay back. This duel is mine," Alex said as he deployed his duel disk.

Suddenly a loud noise came from below them as the old reactor was activated, bathing them in a multi-colored light. "That's more than just the old reactor isn't it?" Alex asked, sensing a dark power beneath them. "How right you are. We are sitting above a gate to the Netherworld," Roman said. Alex couldn't explain why, but this energy felt strangely familiar to him. As if reading his mind, Roman asked "Sensing something familiar?" "And what if I am?" Alex asked. "That would make sense after all, but enough talk, it's time for our destinies to unfold," he said as he activated his duel disk.

Both: "Let's duel!"

Alex: 4000 LP

Roman: 4000 LP

"I'll go first. I place one card face-down and end my turn," Roman said. A single face-down? What could Roman be planning? Well, I'll only find out by attacking, Alex said to himself. "It's my move. Since there are no monsters on my field, I special summon Evil HERO Infernal Prodigy in attack mode," Alex said.

Level 2/DARK/Fiend

"And next, I sacrifice him to summon my Evil HERO Galactic Ruler. You see, even though he's level 7, I can summon him with 1 sacrifice if I use an Evil HERO," Alex explained.

"Now, attack directly!" Alex shouted. His monster rushed Roman and delivered a swift punch to his chest, knocking him back.

Roman: 1500 LP

"Way to go Alex!" Yusei shouted. "Not only did he land the first hit, he took away more than half of Roman's life points," Leo said. "However now the effect of my Wolf in Sheep's Clothing trap card activates. Since I took damage from a direct attack, I can summon a level 1 monster from my hand along with a monster with the same name from my deck," Roman explained as he summoned two copies of his Dark Spider.

Level 1/DARK/Insect

"I activate Galactic Ruler's special ability. When he inflicts damage to my opponent's life points, I can add either an Evil HERO monster, a copy of Dark Fusion, or a spell that lists Dark Fusion in its text from my deck to my hand, and I choose my Evil HERO Dark General," Alex said as he pulled the card from his deck. "I set a card face-down and due to Prodigy's effect, I can draw 1 card. I end my turn," Alex said.

"No attack points? There's no way he can beat Alex with those," Leo said. "They're not for attacking. He set himself up to summon his Earthbound Immortal," Luna said. "It's my turn. And I activate the field spell Spider Web," Roman said. "Just great," Alex said. "You can guess what happens next. I sacrifice my two Dark Spiders to summon Earthbound Immortal Uru!" Roman shouted.

Level 10/DARK/Insect

ATK&DEF 3000

"And don't forget, since a field spell is in play, Uru can attack you directly. Strike with Dark Thread!" Roman shouted. "Not so fast Roman, I'm activating an old favorite of my mom's, Hallowed Life Barrier! By discarding one card, all damage I take this turn becomes 0," Alex explained. A barrier appeared between himself and Uru's attack. "So you managed to dodge that one. Well, your monster won't dodge this. I play the Fissure spell card to destroy your Galactic Ruler," Roman said as Alex's monster exploded. "With him gone, I place 2 cards face-down and end my turn," Roman said.

"My move, I draw. And I summon my Dark General in attack mode and activate his special ability, allowing me to add an Evil HERO monster from my deck to my hand, like my Evil HERO Stone Guardian," Alex explained. "Now Dark General, attack Roman directly!" Alex shouted. "Alright, if this connects, Alex wins!" Leo shouted. "Which is why I play the Roar of the Earthbound continuous trap. If you attack with a monster that's weaker than my immortal, your monster is destroyed and you take half of its attack points as damage," Roman explained.

Alex: 3200 LP

"I activate the effect of my Evil HERO Stone Guardian. Since an Evil HERO was destroyed, I can summon him from my hand to protect me. I place one card face-down and end my turn," Alex said. "Then it's my move. How long do you think you can defend yourself from my Earthbound Immortal's attacks?" Roman asked. "Long enough to beat you," Alex responded.

"We'll just see about that. Uru, attack him directly!" Roman shouted. "I play the Dimension Wall trap card. With its effect, you take the damage from this battle instead of me, which means you lose Roman," Alex said. "I activate my own trap card, Wiretap, which means your trap is negated and shuffled back into your deck," Roman said. "What?!" Alex exclaimed. Uru's attack struck him, knocking him onto his back.

Alex: 200 LP

"Alex!" Luna called out. "I'm okay," he said as he started to get to his feet. "But how long will that be the case. One more attack from my immortal and you will lose this duel and become a Dark Signer," Roman said. "We'll see about that Roman," Alex said. "I end my turn," Roman said. "It's my move, and due to Stone Guardian's special ability, I can add a copy of Dark Fusion to my hand," Alex said.

Where is it? That one card is all I need to turn this duel around. Well, until I draw it, I have to hold out, he thought to himself. "I play the spell Foolish Burial Goods. With it I can send one spell or trap from my deck to my graveyard, and I choose my Transaction Rollback. With that, I end my turn," Alex said as he put the card in his graveyard.

Suddenly he could hear Roman laughing. "What's so funny?" Alex asked. "It's just so funny to me how hard you're fighting against a fate that you yourself set into motion," Roman said. "What do you mean I set it into motion? I don't have anything to do with this," Alex said. "On the contrary, you have everything to do with this," Roman said.

In the next chapter, we get an explanation about Alex's part in the war, so stay tuned. Also, the reason I skipped over Yusei's and Kalin's duel is because nothing changed, so it wasn't really necessary to write it, and I'm also going to be skipping Jack's and Carly's duel.
