He got the photos of our injuries out of the way first. "Sorry, I'm sure it feels a bit of an invasion of privacy, but it will help with our case. Once you've visited St. Mungos, they will provide a full report for the file as well." He put down the camera and took off his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose.
"I owe you both an apology. We have been watching Ron carefully these last few weeks. He's been increasingly agitated and short tempered since his disastrous visit to The Burrow over Christmas. Katie came to me about three weeks ago with some concerns. Seems she found a secret room in their flat, he had cast an undetectable extension charm and hid the addition with a bookcase. Well, when she was coming home one day, she arrived and called for him, then went through the flat trying to find him and despite checking all the rooms he wasn't there. As she was coming back, she thought she saw him near the shelf in the study and she hadn't heard the floo or the pop of apparition so she knew he hadn't just arrived. The next time she was alone she investigated and found the hidden room he had been in."
He looked like a terrible weight had been placed on his shoulders, but he addressed us professionally regardless. "What she found there wasn't pretty. There were messages scribbled on hundreds of pieces of parchment and all over the walls. It was clear that whoever had done it, and as far as she was concerned Ron was the only contender there, was not of sound mind. The subject matter was of concern as well. It centered around the pair of you. I honestly don't know what happened, but the man is delusional. He seems to think you are still together, just with the addition of Katie. He sees your relationship with Draco as a betrayal of trust and he has been plotting to do something about it. Katie didn't know what to do with the information so she told me about it. We investigated and also decided something was very wrong, but we had to approach it carefully. Ron has been so short tempered lately, which is saying a lot because he's always short tempered, that we had a feeling something was going to snap so we've been keeping a watch on him. Our hands were tied unless he actually did something so it was a bit of a waiting game. It finally happened this morning. Katie has been trying to act as normal as possible while we did what we could on our side, but she has obviously been a bit nervous and devastated. She apparently made a breakfast he didn't care for and Ron completely flew off the handle. She said there was screaming, throwing things, and he just completely lost it. Unfortunately, she ended up pretty battered and bruised in the process as well. She was unconscious for a bit but as soon as she came to, she alerted us that Ron was nowhere to be seen and to his current state." He looked sheepish. "It took us a bit to find his hideout. I'm so sorry we didn't get there sooner. It's our job to protect the wizarding community and here you lot rescued yourself."
This was a lot of information to process. Part of me felt for the awful position Harry had been put in, but the other part of me was absolutely furious. "You're telling me you've known about this for weeks and didn't see fit to tell me? Someone is after me and my fiancé and you just let us walk around as if nothing's the matter? Had you told us at the beginning we could have been on guard. Made sure Minerva was aware, watched our backs, cast additional protections when we were out, but instead you let us be completely blindsided."
Harry ran his hands frustratingly through his hair making it even messier than usual. "I'm so sorry 'Mione. Some of it was emotions. I was conflicted on whether or not I believed Ron would actually do act on his obsession, but some of it was also pride. You spent all those years protecting me and now, as Head of the Auror office, it was my job to protect you and I wanted to prove I could do it without your help. I failed on so many levels and you ended up hurt in the process."
The pain was evident on his face. Ron was Harry's first friend and now his brother-in-law. I can see, despite his loyalties to me as well, he would be in an awful position here.
Taking a deep breath, I broke the silence. "I understand how difficult of a position it was for you. And really, you got there before anything happened. You just happened to rescuing a very brilliant witch and wizard." He cracked a smile at that and I turned sterner. "However, in the future if someone is wanting to cause Draco or me harm, you're to tell us immediately."
He nodded his head vigorously. "I completely understand how royally I screwed up here and I have learned a lot to prevent it from happening again." He paused clearly hesitating over the next bit. "The reason you've been brought straight here instead of going to St. Mungos is because we need to discuss formally submitting charges. If you choose to do so, I need to get a formal statement and pictures then we can go get you all patched up and will get statements from the mediwitches too."
I looked at Draco then turned back to Harry. "Can we have a moment together to discuss it?" he agreed and left us alone.
Draco's first action once we were alone was to grab and kiss me. When he released me there was a pool of emotion swimming around his deep gray eyes.
"That is the most scared I've been in quite some time. I'm so thankful I'm marrying a witch who is so capable of looking after herself."
I smiled. It was great to hear him say such a thing. Ron would have told me it was my job to stay out of trouble and stay home cooking meals and looking after a brood of children. Draco valued my independence and ability to fight my own battles and I didn't realize until just now how truly important that was to me.
"I'm just glad it was so short lived. We worked really well together." He agreed. "We aren't here to talk about how amazing we are though. We need to discuss what to do about Ron."
"I have my thoughts, but as our histories are different with him, I would really like to hear yours first."
That made sense. Ron and Draco have always clashed. Even after the war, Harry was willing to testify for him, but Ron refused. It went towards Harry and Draco losing some of their enmity towards each other and at least being civil I'm public. Ron never seemed to get passed it.
"History is definitely something we have, but I don't want to get caught up in that like Harry did. He is in serious need of help. What he did is utterly horrific. He is completely out of touch with reality and is a danger to others and himself. To allow him to go back out there and trust he will get help is wishful thinking. I think he is too far gone to even think he needs help. The mind healers at Azkaban are his best chance of returning to a functioning member of society."
Draco looked relieved. "That was my thoughts too but I was afraid to suggest it. This isn't something that happened overnight and he will need intense, long term therapy." He looked like he has something else he wanted to say but wasn't sure of himself.
"Out with it, Draco."
"You read me so well. I was actually thinking that there are many witches and wizards out there still struggling post war and they didn't have the benefit of having a live-in mind healer like we did. I'd like to approach Kingsley about starting a program to hire two or three full time mind healers that could work on the outskirts of Diagon Alley. That way people could be more discreet about entering verses being stationed at St. Mungos or the Ministry. Also, their services would be free for the public to use. If the ministry can't afford to hire them, I would like to pay their salaries."
My heart melted and I threw myself at the man I love hugging him hard. "That is a beautiful idea Draco. I bet we can get a meeting with Kingsley today. There is bound to be a press conference about this and it would be lovely to announce those services at the same time. It would also serve to paint Ron in the better light oof someone who needs help instead of someone who is truly bad."
Draco nodded in agreement. "Shall I get Harry?"
"You're more banged up than I am. I'll get him."
Harry came in and leaned against the front of his desk with his ankles crossed in front of him. "Have you two had a chance to discuss things?"
Draco was the one to speak. I think he sensed it would be easier if I didn't have to say the words. "We're going to move forward with pressing charges.
Harry nodded and moved to the other side of his desk to gather the proper paperwork. "I think that is wise."
"Harry." He stopped rifling through his things and looked up at me. "We'd like to speak to Kingsley about something before others get wind of this."
"Sure. With a case this high profile there will be a press conference so I will need to get him involved anyways. I'll get him."
Harry sent off his stag Patronus to alert Kingsley and it was only a few minutes before his deep booming voice was filling the room.
"Goodness Gracious. What has happened to the pair of you?"
We filled him in and his nostrils flared as he listened intently. "You're doing the right thing. Letting him off the hook wouldn't be doing him any favors." After agreeing we filled him in on our other plan, much to Harry's surprise. "That is brilliant. I think I have some room in the budget to hire on a full-time mind healer and receptionist. We have a few buildings on the edge of town that aren't in use that I think could be utilized at no additional cost. Draco, if you would be willing to make a donation for a second mind healer, I think that would be wise. If those two can't handle the traffic, then we will go from there to make sure the services are truly available to all. I will make the announcement today when discussion the situation with Ron."
"Thank you, Kingsley." I got up and hugged my old friend.
"No, thank you both. I'm sorry this had to happen, but hopefully this will help many people get help and end the stigma that just because someone looks alright on the outside means they are healthy on the inside."
Draco cleared his throat. "Do you think we could make that trip to St. Mungo's now?"
I looked over and it was apparent that his pain level was increasing. He was now beginning to sweat. Harry noticed it too and looked alarmed.
"Yes! I have everything I need. I'll just have to ask the healers for a report which you will need to sign off on so we can use it. You can use my floo here."
We made good use of Harry's offer to use his floo and we were quickly sent through processing and given a joint room in a private ward at St. Mungos. My injuries were fairly minor, just a fractured cheek bone and split lip. Draco wasn't so lucky. His nose was broken and a few ribs with a bit of internal bleeding thrown in for fun. Thank goodness for magic because by the time Kingsley was making his press release at 8am the following morning, we were already back at home.
Our game night was rescheduled for Sunday afternoon and it was a lovely return to normalcy. Thankfully, our friends were kind enough to gloss over the incident and let us just have a nice, stress free afternoon before returning to the school.
Upon arrival McGonagall quickly snatched us up to ensure we were alright. She filled us in that the students had been briefed at dinner the night before that there had been an incident to reassure them since it was blasted all over the papers. In addition, she brought back a mind healer to the castle as well. Apparently, our initiative had struck a chord with her and she decided that if adults were still struggling, then perhaps we should have the same services available to the students. It was quite a lovely surprise.
