Maura switched on the lights as she returned to beacon hill after a long day at the morgue. She threw her keys into the bowl on the counter next to the door and sighed. Being tired she decided to skip dinner and go to have a shower.

She silently calculated what time it was in Rome. It all went automatically. It was too late to call Jane, but she could still text her. Maybe she got lucky, and the pilot wrote her a good night message. The time difference appeared sometimes confusing to her. Despite having a beautiful brain, she couldn't manage to keep track. Jane being in different time zones all the time made it harder.

Sighing she undressed before slipping into the cabin. The hot spray of water helped her muscles to relax. When she checked her phone afterwards, Jane hadn't replied. It was somewhere around noon in Rome. Maybe Jane had forgotten to charge her phone. Or she was just doing some sightseeing. Maura wasn't worried though.

Just when she was about to drift to sleep her phone rang. Hopefully not another dead body she thought and groaned, turning to switch the light on again. When she saw that it was Jane's name which lit up her screen, she felt alert.

"Jane, are you okay?" she asked almost breathless. Her girlfriend was far too considerate to call in the middle of the night unless something bad had happened Maura mused while listening into the silence.

"Jane?!" Maura began to panic.

"Hey baby. I'm sorry to call you in the middle of the night. But I.. … I just needed to hear your voice." Jane sounded vulnerable and helpless.

"What happened?" Maura asked, sitting up in bed.

"Nothing. I'm fine. I just… I don't know. I miss you." Maura sensed that Jane wasn't saying the whole truth and weighted her options. Should she ask or let go. Jane always came to her when she was ready to talk. Before she could make a decision Jane cleared her throat.

"Frankie left a message on my voicemail and told me that ma is in the hospital." She finally stated and Maura clutched the phone as if this would bring Jane closer to her.

"Oh, im so sorry Jane. Do you have any details? Shall I go and check on her?" she heard a strange noise which she believed to be a sob. Of all possible human emotions, Maura had never seen Jane cry.

"I don't know. Maybe its not even bad. Frankie said that she fainted at work and was brought to the hospital. He couldn't get hold of me because of the time difference." Maura heard insecurity and desperation in the brunette's voice.

She and her mother were fighting a lot, but everybody knew that Jane loved her mother deep down under the rough shell and that the fights were never serious. It was just the way the two Rizzoli women interacted with each other.

"Have you tried her phone?" Maura asked trying to think systematically which to her surprise was hard under the circumstances that her love was under stress.

"Several times. I think she's still in hospital."

Maura nodded to herself. "I'm going to call and see what I can find out."

"I tried, but they told me to wait for the dayshift tomorrow." Jane stated. Maura had the impression that she was feeling better. She wished so hard that she could help Jane, but there was nothing which she could do as they were separated by thousands of miles.

"I'll try. Hold on. I'll call you back, okay Jane?"

R&I

Jane sat by the phone, feeling stupid for feeling so worried. But her fears sprung from the unknown. Her father had died of cancer and she wasn't ready to lose her mother. I'm overreacting, she kept repeating to herself like a mantra, wishing that the hospital would just call back or that Maura would be able to get some information.

Maura, she thought warmly before her mind went back to the woman at the bar. For the fraction of a second, Jane, the player, had been back. But even in less time she got a grip and thought about how stupid it was. She loved Maura and she didn't want to hurt her. Maura was all to her and all she wanted. Jane had politely shaken her head and the woman had shrugged and turned away to look for another willing victim.

Sighing Jane had focused back on her conversation with Peter. And only checked her phone upon returning to her hotel room. Frankie had called about 10 times which told her that something bad must have happened. She had immediately checked the voicemail from her brother.

The ringing of the phone pulled her out of her thoughts, and she picked up. She clutched to the phone ignoring the pain caused by the grip. Maura sighed deeply.

"She's going to be okay Jane. They say that she blacked out because Angela hadn't drunk and eaten enough. They kept her overnight, but she will be released tomorrow."

"Oh god, thank you." Jane exclaimed and rubbed her head, the elbow resting on her knee as she was sitting on the edge of the bed. "Thank you!" she repeated and heard a soft chuckle on the other end of the line.

"You're welcome. How are you?" Maura asked softly and the tenderness in her voice made her miss Maura even more. Never would she have thought that the local separation would be so hard on her.

"I miss you." She honestly said and wondered how Maura was so calm.

"I miss you too Jane." Came the tender reply and Jane heard the rustling of sheets in the background.

"I believe that we started something which we didn't finish?" there was a sultry twist in Maura's voice which made Janes heart pound harder. God, she had just survived the shock with her mother, but her mother was fine and she was still horny. So, a smug grin curled up her lips.

"Really? I can't remember. Maybe you can help me." She stated and heard Maura laugh.

"What are you wearing Jane?" The brunette glanced down at herself although knowing all to well that she was wearing a tank top and some boy shorts. Mouthing her reply she added the same question to Maura who simply replied: "Nothing."

No surprise to Jane who knew that Maura liked to sleep in the nude.

"Well, I'd say it's a pretty good start." She joked, her voice bearing a husky shade.

"It's a very good start." Maura agreed and continued. "It would be much better though if you were naked as well, because right now I feel that it's a bit unfair."

Jane grinned and put Maura on loudspeakers before pulling off the tank top. Then she slipped out of the boy shorts. "It should be fair now." She chuckled. Jane had no experience in sexting or telephone sex. It felt odd to lay naked and alone in bed with Maura so far away. She didn't really know what to do and waited.

When Maura was silent, she cleared her throat. "Maur, I have no idea how this works." She said, the tone shy and insecure. A side which only Maura was allowed to see.

"Oh, I thought you knew. I'm sorry. I was waiting for you to begin." Maura sounded a bit embarrassed for making Jane obviously feel uncomfortable. And Jane thought that despite being hot the whole day she suddenly had a hard time to get going.

Maybe this wasn't a good idea, she mused. Ready to speak to Maura who began to describe how she would touch her if they were in the same bed. And the doc knew very well how to describe what she was feeling when touching Jane.

Jane felt the arousal grow between her legs and began tracing her body, wherever Maura described her hands to be. She closed her eyes and listened to the sweet voice who pushed her closer to the edge until she came hard against her fingers, whispering Maura's name in awe.
