Chapter 33

Daenerys learned about her true parentage when she was eight years old. She learned it through her septa. Cersei brushed her hair one night when the girl broke out in sobs. Cersei turned around quickly and asked her what was the matter.

"Why are you crying sweetling? Did anyone do anything to you?" Cersei thought of the maids, two very good girls who were with them since the children were babes. She thought of the septa who was a cold but a very prudent woman. She thought of Tyrion who was back from the West. He recently spent six months at the Rock, at Jaime's insistence. "He is mine brother too and my heir. I shall leave everything for him. I plan to have no more children and the girls will not inherit for they shall be married and leave to their husband's lands." Jaime had written. Tyrion agreed to the trip since he wanted to see his nieces and Jaime.

Cersei smiled when she read Jaime's letter. She had bigger plans for Tyrion. She wanted the North for him. Sansa Stark was almost nine. Cersei and Ned were no near having a child. The queen did not fret as much about not having a child. She was far too busy. Ned now included her during small council meetings. The children were busy with their own schedules so Cersei found herself with some time on her hands. Ned asked her to a meeting and so she found herself next to Jon Arryn, Petyr Baelish, Pycelle, Varys and other lords.

Cersei went back to asking Dany about what caused her such pain. Daenerys looked at her with big wet violet eyes. "Jon cannot be my brother. His name day is only a few moons away from mine. You have had to have him in your belly for nine moons. I learned it yesterday with the septa. So I thought that maybe Jon wasn't yours and I grew sad but then I knew that Jon is truly yours because he looks like Papa and they all say he has your cheekbones but no one says I look like you." She burst out.

The woman grabbed her child. "You are mine and Papa's. Yes, you were not in my belly but you are mine. You came to me as a baby. Your papa fell in love with you and so did I. We love you just as much as we love Jon. Do not for a second think otherwise."

Daenerys looked at her, "what happened to my real mamma and papa?"

Cersei felt her heart break, "my love, I am your true mamma and Ned is your true papa. The people who made you are nothing to you. Do you care more for them?"

The little girl shook her head, "never mamma."

"Your father and I shall tell you about them one day when you are older." Cersei said and grabbed her hand. "You will sleep with papa and I."

Daenerys took her hand and went with her. Ned looked at them when he entered their chambers. The little girl's eyes filled with tears once more.

"My Sun." Ned said confused by the child's tears. Daenerys did not cry easily. She was a happy girl.

"She knows that I did not carry her inside me." Cersei replied.

Ned's face tensed, "does she know all of it?"

Cersei shook her head, "we love her as much as we love Jon."

"Of course." Ned said and looked at Daenerys, "you are a Stark. Cersei Stark is your queen mother and I Eddard Stark am your father. You are ours, my Sun. Never forget that, you and Jon and our children and we love you equally."

Daenerys nodded and hugged him. Cersei let Ned cradle Daenerys until she was asleep. He put her between them two.

"We have to let her know about her parents." Cersei said carefully. It was a sore topic between them. Cersei thought that Daenerys should know about the Targaryens. Ned always avoided the topic or flatly said that there was no need.

"No. I don't want her to suffer. I hate to see her cry." Ned said roughly.

"She should know from us." Cersei said, "what happens when she hears the lords and ladies speak of the abominable dragons? Jon and her are reading more and more. They septa and maester is asking what to teach them. They are learning of the vassal houses and soon will learn about history. They will learn of the conquest, the dragons and her ancestors. It should be as painless as possible.

Ned watched her, "I don't want her to love us less."

Cersei shook her head, "how could she ever love you less? You are her papa and I am her mamma. I told her that she was ours and she will remain ours. We have to teach her about them. We have to teach Jon too."

"It will hurt her." Ned continued.

"It will hurt her more if she hears lies. She should know about them, not all of them were bad. Some of them were good people. She should know about Daeron the Good, Jaehaerys, some of the Viserys and even Aegon and his sisters. It is unfair to her. We cannot lie to her. Imagine an older Daenerys looking at you with those hurt violet eyes because we lied to her. I will not have it." She insisted.

"I cannot speak about them. You cannot ask me to teach her about the people who tortured and killed my family. I do not want you to teach her about Rhaegar."

Cersei sighed, he was still sore about Rhaegar and her childish fantasies. He was jealous of a ghost at times. She knew how much Ned loved her. He was also very possessive and hated the idea of another man thinking of her. It was troublesome when some lords lauded her beauty. Ned would frown but was polite. He would then mark her at night, kiss her and ask her to tell him how much he loved her. His behaviors appealed a darker side of her. "Tyrion can teach them both. He has read more books than anyone I know. He loves history and he is a wonderful story teller. He can also teach them Valyrian."

"No Valyrian. They are wolves not dragons." Ned said with a frown.

Cersei kissed his cheek, "very well."

And so her children learned about the Targaryens. Jon was not very interested in the lessons and neither was Daenerys until she saw the paintings and drawings. Cersei could tell that Daenerys felt a connection but the girl remained quiet. Cersei continued to rule by Ned's side and watched her children grow into mischievous but loving children. Daenerys grew more beautiful by the hour. They had offers from Dorne to the Umbers. All rejected, Daenerys was too young. Cersei thought that the Gendry Baratheon would be a nice suitor. Ned and Stannis were friendly enough but they did not offer. They tried to push an alliance with Jon and Shireen. Cersei refused on the basis that the girl was not pretty enough. Ned did not pursue the matter. She knew he had Sansa as a match for Jon. Cersei however had Joanna as a match.

Cersei had visited West when they were ten. Joanna was lively, smart and the apple of Tywin's eyes. Oh Minisa was a lovely girl too but she was far too innocent for King's Landing. She was also betrothed to Edmure Tully.

Cersei had asked to take the girls back to King's Landing. Jaime refused, "maybe next year or the year after. They have yet to flower. They shall be mine for a bit longer." Jaime said and kissed her goodbye.

The queen had a busy life in King's Landing. She continued to be in the small council. Jon Arryn glared at her in greeting. Cersei was quite used to the dirty looks. Ned however grew less tolerant of his mentor as the years went by. Cersei however knew that Ned would not dismiss the old man. It would not be her doing. She would not have Jon Arryn leave because of her. It would be his own doing. Cersei knew that it would be a blow to Ned to attempt to oust Arryn. The older man did not openly scheme but he was sure to make her feel unwelcome in his presence.

Ned noticed it more and more and it vexed him. Cersei played the long game. It would be Jon Arryn leaving either by his choice or by the King's command. She stayed away from the old man and encouraged Ned to keep learning.

Daenerys flowered late, she was four and ten when her moonblood came. Cersei explained that she could have children. She explained that she would have to be very careful. Her daughter was beautiful and men were vain. "You are a princess and you do not let anyone touch you."

"What if I love them?" Daenerys asked.

Cersei looked at the girl, "do you love any boy now?"

Daenerys shook her head, "but what if I fall in love?"

"Then you must be smart my love. I was a maid when I married your father. He has been my only one. I however know that some women lie and say that their husband took their maidenhead. You may bleed a little on your first time." Daenerys was beet red.

"Mamma please." She said and looked away.

"Dany, you must know this. I would say to wait until you are wed. You must tell your mamma if a boy catches your fancy for we may make sure that he is worthy." Cersei told her and explained what to do every month.

Daenerys nodded. Cersei made sure to surround her with girls. Jon, the Baratheon boy and Tyrion were the few males that she really was around. She knew her brother and Jon would never touch her as such. The Baratheon boy and Daenerys did not care for each other. Daenerys found him dull.

Life in King's Landing continued uninterrupted. Tyrion traveled around. She could not keep him by her side. Ned called him her eldest boy. "You have to let him see the world. He is a young man with money and your queenly support. Tyrion is smart, and will be fine."

Cersei thought that the Targaryen matter was closed until one night. They were having supper when Daenerys burst out and said it. She was about five and ten years old when she finally confronted them about who she was. "I am a Targaryen, aren't I?"

Jon looked at his sister and then his parents. Her boy knew that Daenerys was not his biological sister since they were ten years old. He had asked Ned then if he could marry Daenerys. Ned frowned, "of course you cannot, she is your sister. You cannot marry your sister."

Jon frowned, "well, the Targaryens did and she is not my sister by blood. If I marry her, she won't have to go to her parents."

Ned told her about the conversation. "No one will take Dany away from us. You will not marry her, she is your sister. You would have to kiss her if you married her."

Jon made a face then, "I do not want to kiss Dany. She is disgusting." Ned laughed, "very well. She should always be disgusting to you. She is your sister and she will always be."

Jon had not said anything about marrying Daenerys anymore. Cersei however watched them closely. She worried anything untoward would happen but they behaved like brother and sister only.

"You are a Stark." Cersei said while cutting her food.

"Not by blood." Daenerys said.

"You are a Stark as your mother said." Tyrion continued. Her brother tried to diffuse the tension.

"Father, am I a Targaryen? Am I a bastard girl?" The lovely girl with violet eyes said. Both Jon and Daenerys stopped calling them mamma and papa a few months ago. It was mother and father now. Cersei missed "mamma."

Cersei looked at her husband of six and ten years. He was aging gracefully. He was more handsome than when they were young newlyweds. She watched as he looked at their daughter.

"You are not a bastard. You are a Stark as your mother and uncle told you." He said calmly.

Daenerys looked at him and her eyes flashed, "Not by blood. Mother did not carry me. I have no Lannister blood. Do I have Stark blood? Am I your bastard? Did you force mother to accept me?"

"I would never break a vow to your mother." He said clearly.

"Am I Rhaegar's and Elia's? Is that why Oberyn Martell looks at me as if he hates me and wants me at the same time?" Daenerys asked. "I deserve to know their names."

It was inevitable. Cersei knew this was coming. She looked at Ned pleadingly. "I will only speak of this once. The matters ends tonight." Her husband said.

"Your uncle Tyrion taught you about the Targaryens and I am sure you know about Robert's rebellion."

Tyrion looked uncomfortable, "I have left the matter untouched."

Cersei nodded at her baby brother gratefully and then looked at Jon. They knew something.

"What do you know about Robert's Rebellion?" She asked them.

"Robert Baratheon rebelled after Rhaegar kidnapped and raped father's sister Lyanna. Father's older brother and father answered summons from King Aerys and were killed in King's Landing. Robert and Rhaegar met in the Riverlands and killed each other. The last Targaryen King, Aerys burned King's landing. Father came and took the throne." Jon replied.

Daenerys did not take her eyes away from Ned. "You have to tell me. Ser Selmy said that Rhaegar was nice. He said that he played music and was gentle. Was he my father?"

Ned frowned. "He was not. I will not have you worship a man who was unfaithful. A man who betrayed his wife and children." Rhaegar brought the worst in Ned.

"Eddard." Cersei whispered warningly.

Ned looked at her and sighed, "my sister and Rhaegar ran off."

"They all think he raped her." Daenerys raised her voice.

Tyrion intervened, "no one knows what happened. All we know was that Lyanna Stark did not go back North after the Harrenhall tourney."

"Mother and you met each other there. You fell in love after seeing her." Daenerys said.

Ned nodded, "I did. Lyanna and Benjen were to return North for a bit before sailing to Storm's End. She was to marry Robert then. Rhaegar crowned her the queen of love and beauty the day before. Robert was upset but was restrained. Brandon was to go to the Riverlands and marry Catelyn. None of this happened. Benjen came to us the following day. Lyanna was nowhere to be found and neither was the crown prince. Brandon came to talk to King Aerys and demand Rhaegar return Lyanna." Ned's face was contorted with pain.

"Aerys asked for my father and me to answer for treason. My father came to King's landing. Aerys killed them both." Ned said.

"How?" Daenerys asked.

"He burned father while Brandon strangled himself trying to help my father." Ned said above a whisper.

"Father." Jon said sadly.

Daenerys looked stunned. "I lost my brother and father to King Aerys and Lyanna to Rhaegar. It was proper turmoil. I married your mother. Lyanna was still lost to me. Catelyn was pregnant with Sansa and your mother with Jon."

"I answered summons from Dorne. My sister was dead inside the Tower of Joy. I buried her and went to free King's Landing from Aerys. The king killed himself, his daughter in law, Elia and Rhaegar's children, Rhaenys and Aegon. I took the throne after Robert died from his injuries. Your mother and Jon came to King's Landing and we learned of you and Viserys." Ned said while looking at Daenerys. Ned gulped and hesitated but continued.

"Aerys sent a pregnant queen Rhaella and prince Viserys to Dragonstone. He thought you would be safer there. You were born during a stormy night and queen Rhaella died during childbirth." Ned said.

"I killed her." Daenerys said. "and she was his sister." Daenerys looked a bit sick.

"Oh sweetling, you didn't. This happens sometimes. My mother and father's mother died that way. It was not your fault." Cersei rushed.

She could tell Tyrion looked so sad for Daenerys. He knew what that felt like, to feel guilty for killing one's mother.

Cersei never let her think that way. Tyrion and Dany were gifts.

"My father killed your family. My brother killed your sister." Daenerys said and sobbed.

Ned stood up and went to her. He kneeled by her, "they are not your true family. We are, your mother, uncle, brother and me. We are your family. I do not ever want you to say that."

"You should hate me." She said and looked away.

"How could I ever hate you? How could your mother and I hate you? Never, you are our Sun, your uncle's little dragon. I sent for you and Viserys. Bad men killed him but Stannis fought for you. He brought you and we fell in love with you." Ned said and then hugged her. "You are Daenerys Stormborn Stark. Our daughter, sister to Jon Stark."

Daenerys nodded. Jon grabbed her hand. "Why did you not send me away? Am I not a threat to Jon? Grandfather said that once."

"He thinks you mean to take away my throne." Jon said plainly.

Daenerys frowned, "because I am the last Targaryen."

Cersei looked at Ned then. Would her husband tell them about Jon? He would not. It was a secret, a pact kept by three people, Howland, Ned and her.

"Yes." Ned said.

"It is why Jon Arryn dislikes me so much? I understand it now." Daenerys said.

"Pish posh, Arryn dislikes anyone who is beautiful and smart, hence why he cannot tolerate any Lannister or you my dearest." Tyrion said and Daenerys laughed. She kissed Tyrion on the cheek.

"I don't want it." Daenerys told Jon plainly. "It is yours, father won it for you and your children. It was not meant for me." The girl said truthfully. Cersei smiled at Dany. She was raised to help Jon, not take over his place. Jon was to be their king, a ruler in his own right.

Jon nodded, "it changes nothing, you are my beloved and annoying slightly older sister."

Cersei smiled at them. They were perfect. "You are so loved Daenerys. The small folk, the lords and ladies, they all love you. Daenerys Stormborn, their lovely and beautiful Stark princess."

Ned nodded, "never think I don't love you. I would gladly give my life for you and your brother. You are my children. My pride, the throne means nothing without you two. Never forget, we are wolves. The lone wolf dies."

"But the pack survives." Dany and Jon said.
