Dear Remus,
How are things going with you? Is Sirius still keeping you up with his snoring? If he is, at least there are loads of room in Grimmauld Place, so at least it's fixable.
School has been going fine, especially since the Triwizard Tournament is about to begin! I'm so excited to see who the Hogwarts champion is! A lot of people in Gryffindor think it'll be Angelina Johnson. I think she'd be good at it, she's a whiz with her wand.
Professor Moody is still as intimidating as ever. You can tell he has a passion for Defense Against the Dark Arts, but he's still scary. I swear that magic eye of his can see through anything. Colin Creevy was writing a note in his desk, and Moody saw right through the wood. He made Colin show him the note, and Moody even read it out loud. Even worse, he was writing a note to ask me to go to Hogsmeade with him! Poor Colin was as red as a tomato.
I miss you. I hope you have better luck finding a job. It was awful of Snape to reveal your secret like that.
Love,
Elizabeth.
Once she finished writing her letter, Elizabeth left the common room to go to the Owlery. She hoped one of the faster owls was available. Unfortunately, when she got there, Julia, Sophie, and one of their friends, Charlotte were there.
"Look what the cat dragged in." Julia sneered. Sophie and Charlotte laughed.
"I'm just here to deliver a letter, Julia. No need to be your nasty self." Elizabeth replied as she stroked an owl, hoping it would be in the mood to fly and deliver a letter.
"Nasty? Funny coming from someone who is best friends with Loony Lovegood. Remind me, didn't she walk into Charms last week with flowers and brambles in her hair last week? Only freaks associate with freaks." Julia retorted.
"Well, if I'm a freak, then you're a freak too since you're here talking with me." Elizabeth said with a grin.
Julia sputtered and glared. Raising her wand, she yelled, "Empedidi!" and shot the spell at Elizabeth.
Instantly, Elizabeth's hair morphed into feathers, and the feathers themselves became blue. Suppressing a gasp, Elizabeth patted her hair and found the feathers felt soft. But she wasn't going to let Julia get away with it.
Glaring at the smirking witch, Elizabeth pulled out her wand and yelled, "Ananaporo!" and blasted the spell at Julia.
Julia immediately started to grow hair all over her body and started to shriek.
"How dare you! You just wait until the professors find out! I'll make sure you're expelled!" she screamed as Sophie tried to stop the fur from growing.
"Don't even try! I'll just tell them that you were the one to instigate it all! If I get thrown out, so would you." Elizabeth fired back.
Julia was clearly trying to come up with another solution, but only glowered at Elizabeth when it was clear she had nothing.
"Fine. But if you say a word, I'm making sure you go down with me." she threatened.
She stormed out, and her cronies followed.
Elizabeth recited a reversal charm, and it took a while to take effect. Soon her hair was hair again and not feathers. The blue slowly went away on the top of her head, but unfortunately, the ends were fluorescent blue. She sent her letter to Remus and assessed her hair.
"How am I going to hide it from Minerva? Or any of the professors, really." Elizabeth pondered. Her hair, which fell all the way down her back, was now half blue. Julia's jinx worked a little too well.
Elizabeth tried several more spells and charms, but nothing worked. She didn't recognize the spell and suspected that she probably used a more complex spell. Maybe her stupid family taught it to every new generation, just to use to mess with other people.
She left the Owlery when she saw the sun had set, and she had missed dinner. She had been in the Owlery for nearly an hour, dreading having to show her mum what had happened.
"I suppose I could just say it was by accident... " Elizabeth muttered as she walked down the staircase to Minerva's quarters.
"Blimey! That's a new look!"
"I dunno, it looks a bit fetching. Blue's not a bad color on you."
Fred and George each tapped a shoulder, and she turned to face the twins.
"So tell us-"
"Just how you-"
"Did that-"
"To yourself."
Their twin talk was interesting but was also getting hard to follow. Elizabeth sighed.
"I didn't do it to myself. It was an accident." she lied.
"Really?"
"Not that we don't trust you-"
"But we don't believe you."
There really was no way out of this. Fred and George seemed to be excellent at reading people. She supposed it could be useful since they wanted to run their own joke shop when they graduated.
They were staring at her. She had to talk. She sighed again.
"Look, I was in the Owlery, and was just trying to send a letter to Remus. But Julia and her friends were there. Remember her?" They nodded.
"Well, we sort of got into a fight. And Julia shot a jinx at me. It turned my hair into blue feathers. I was able to change the feathers back to hair, and change some of the color, but the rest won't change." Elizabeth explained.
"Whoa." They said at the same time.
"I thought we told her to leave you, Ginny, and Luna alone last year." George said.
"You did, and she did leave us alone. But, I guess now she thinks that it doesn't matter anymore, since last year is over." Elizabeth replied.
"Rubbish!"
"Yeah. Pretty much. And if I tell, she's going to report that I made her grow fur. Then we both get in trouble or kicked out. So I need to figure out what to say to my mum." Elizabeth said.
"Well, what if we try changing your hair?" Fred asked.
"Sure, give it a try." Elizabeth gave permission.
Both twins tried and used reversal charms that they had been taught beyond the third year, but nothing worked.
"Thanks for trying. I'm just going to go and tell my mum I did it to myself by accident. Given my history with wands, it's believable enough." Elizabeth told them.
"No way!" George said just as Fred yelled, "Absolutely not!"
"Why not? Have you got any ideas?" Elizabeth asked.
"Actually, yes. We do." George replied with a grin.
Ten minutes later, Elizabeth was walking into the Great Hall with Fred and George, holding two slips of paper, one saying Fred, and one saying, George.
People turned to look, and she saw a few people point at her hair. Elizabeth had tied it into her usual two braids, hoping the blue would be less noticeable. Though honestly, in her opinion, the twin's hair was worse. They really needed a trim.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" Elizabeth asked as they stepped up to the Goblet of Fire.
"Why wouldn't it? We already tried just tossing the paper, but it disintegrated before it hit the Goblet. So we need someone who is over seventeen to cross the line and put in our names. And, since you are technically over seventeen, you can do it for us." George reasoned.
"And if you do, we'll say we were trying out a new product, tested it on you, and whoops, now your hair won't go back to normal. Everyone wins!" Fred declared quietly, so no one else overheard their plan.
"Speaking of which, since you already are of age, do you have the trace on you?" Fred asked.
"Actually, yes. The ministry put it on me before I started my second year. And I just want to make sure I don't end up with wrinkles all over or anything. It's oddly discomforting how certain you are about this." Elizabeth replied.
"They shouldn't be so sure about this. The Goblet of Fire is six hundred years old and is a very powerful relic. You can't trick it so easily." Hermione warned from nearby. She was sitting with Harry and Ron at the Gryffindor table.
"We are sure about this Hermione. Our names are written down and they have just as much a right to go in the Goblet. Or my name isn't Gred Weasley." George retorted with a grin. Hermione rolled her eyes.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Fred asked. Elizabeth shrugged.
"Here goes nothing." Elizabeth said. Gripping the papers, she crossed the age line. Nothing bad happened.
Carefully, she dropped the papers in. The Goblet lit up as the names went in, just as it had done for the other prospective champions.
"They're in." She said to the twins as she walked back to them.
"Now change my hair back!" She continued, keeping up the act.
Fred and George once again tried to undo the spell, but once again, nothing happened. None of them thought it would, but they needed to keep up the facade.
Suddenly, Fred and George's faces started twitching. They started to scratch their chins furiously. Hair started to sprout, bright white hair.
They had full-blown white beards in a matter of seconds.
Laughter filled the hall, including from Fred and George. The twins themselves were laughing, and saying they looked like Dumbledore.
The headmaster himself came in at that moment, and sent the twins to the Hospital Wing, telling them he had placed another charm on the age line: even if anyone was able to get past it and put their names in the Goblet, they would still uncontrollably grow beards. The person who put the names in would be left unharmed if they hadn't put in their own.
Though he didn't say it, Elizabeth could tell he trusted her enough to not have a punishment if she broke the rules of the Goblet of Fire. Surely he knew that she would be exempt from the age line and that an underage student could want to use that to her advantage. But he also could have known she wasn't arrogant enough to think she could or should be a champion, so she wouldn't break the rule for herself.
Later that night, she ventured out to the library, at a time when she knew it would be mostly deserted. Fangirls for Krum had been occupying it for the past several days and made it hard for Elizabeth to look for information.
It was especially hard to work with the students from the other schools in the library. While some knew who she was, others didn't. Elizabeth was stared at frequently at meals and in the corridors, as the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students were not used to her.
It was quite late at night when she arrived, in fact, it was half an hour before curfew. But, this meant it was mostly empty, which would make things easier. Elizabeth went to search the shelves, combing through them for books on her family, or on the school when it was founded.
It took a while, but she eventually found one in the large library. It was titled, "Ancient Magic and Structures" she went to a secluded corner and sat at a small table. After scanning the table of contents, she found a chapter titled 'The 900's' she flipped to the page, and started to read.
Britain's own magical school was founded in this era, by Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw. The school was at peace for many years, but eventually, a duel broke out between Gryffindor and Slytherin. Slytherin was prepared to use extremely dark magic, so obscure no one has ever had it on record. Unfortunately, just as he was about to strike Gryffindor, Gryffindor's daughter took the shot instead. She was rumored to have died from the curse, but her body was never found. Gryffindor spent the rest of his life searching for her and researching the magic Slytherin used on her.
Elizabeth had fallen asleep by the time she had finished the paragraph.
At some point, she started to feel a tap on her shoulder. Stirring, she opened her eyes and raised her head. She caught sight of Dumbeldore. He had been the one tapping her. This instantly woke her up.
"Headmaster, I'm sorry I fell asleep, I didn't mean to miss curfew!" she said quickly, praying to the universe that he wouldn't be too mad.
The only readable expression on his face was serenity.
"No harm is done. I myself was breaking curfew, I had just woken up from a wonderful dream about clouds, and I knew that was my mind's way of finding a book on cloud scrying. I only found you asleep in the corner when your invisibility started to flicker." Dumbledore replied.
"My invisibility?" Elizabeth asked.
"Oh, yes. While you were asleep. You kept coming in and out of my sight, like a flickering lightbulb." Dumbledore explained.
"I didn't mean to be invisible, but I suppose that is why Madam Pince didn't shoo me out." Elizabeth realized but started to blush when she realized that was probably not a good thing to say to her headmaster.
"Yes. I often find that when I truly wish not to be seen, I am not." Dumbledore said.
Elizabeth looked over to her book, and her heart panged when she remembered what exactly the text had said.
"If I may ask, what had you doing such avid research on so late in the night?" Dumbledore asked.
Elizabeth knew she couldn't lie to her headmaster. Especially Dumbledore. And even if she was capable of that, she wouldn't know what to say.
She stared at her feet, struggling with what to say.
"I, I wanted to find out what happened to my family. After I was put in the Chamber of Secrets." Elizabeth said quietly.
Dumbledore nodded. "I was wondering when you would start asking questions."
"I've always had questions, but I never wanted to focus on them. It was just too hard. But, I can't run away from them forever. And, I need to know. But there's almost nothing in the library." Elizabeth said.
"Indeed, there is little information on your parents here, but I do know a place where you can learn what you desire."
