Damn, when was the last time I updated this story? 2 weeks now? 3?
Well, I don't really have an excuse to make. I wasn't busy, this story wasn't on hiatus, I didn't have other stuff to do, I just...stopped writing. Sorry about that. Guess it's a good thing I stopped when I did though, since it ended up being the perfect place to leave you all with a cliffhanger.
Anyway, I'm back now, so let's do this.
Pain.
Every part of Peter's body was sore. When he cracked his eyes open, awakening from his sleep, he was hit by a storm of pins and needles immediately. A few groaned out complaints later, and he was fully awake.
Last night had been...complicated.
Peter knew if he tried to go home, Mirko would get pissed at him for staying out so late again. Toga immediately suggested staying at the bar, which Peter didn't mind doing. At least, not until she suggested sleeping with her in her bed.
Peter wasted no time shutting that option down, as did Magne, who had a few choice words for the two of them. Still, all the villains had wanted him to stay, so they all slept together on the floor of the bar. Well, all except for Kurogiri, who kind of just stood behind the bar all night, and Shigaraki, who said the whole thing was stupid.
After a night of sleeping on the wooden floor with Twice's arm over his face and Spinner's legs on top of his, Peter wasn't exactly feeling his best.
"Why did we sleep so close to each other? This place isn't even that small, we easily could have spread out more." Peter silently complained as he pushed Spinner's legs off him.
Nobody was awake except for him and Kurogiri, so Peter did his best to silently move his friends off of him. It was easy at first, then he got to Toga.
Arms, he could handle. Legs, he could handle. But an entire person draped over his left side with her head planted on his chest, well, that was a bit harder to deal with.
"Wait, Magne got angry when Toga wanted us to sleep in her bed together but she doesn't care about this? How is this better!?"
Very slowly, very carefully, Peter worked his arms underneath Toga, gently lifting her off of him.
"Steady, steady Pete." He whispered to himself, panicking way more than he should have been/ Somehow, this didn't feel like a simple, mundane task, rather, it felt like diffusing a time bomb under pressure.
His arms still under her, Peter slowly rose up to his feet. He snuck a glance at Kurogiri, who just silently watched the whole thing as he cleaned a glass. It was hard to tell due to the man's lack of...everything, but Peter got the feeling he was smirking at him.
Now on his knees, Peter set Toga back down on the ground and quietly walked to the bar. He pulled up a stool and heaved a sigh of relief when he sat down without a sound.
"Good morning Peter. I assume you did not sleep well." Peter jumped at Kurogiri's words. The mist-man made no effort to speak quietly, calmly speaking at full volume.
"Dude, keep it down!" Peter hissed at him.
"You know, I do believe you're thinking about this too much. It isn't like they'll kill you for disturbing their sleep. Besides, they really do need to be waking up. It is nearly 10 after all."
Peter froze. Did he just say it was 10?
Peter slowly turned his head to face the clock hanging nearby. It read 9:43
"I'M LATE FOR SCHOOL!" Every one of the sleeping villains snapped awake, springing off the ground and reaching for whatever could be used as a weapon when they heard Peter's shout. When they looked around, they saw nothing but Kurogiri. There was a loud bang and the door leading outside was smashed open, a faint blur dashing through the doorway.
Magne stared blankly at the doorway before dropping the stool she had readied as a weapon.
"...Peter?" She asked as though she knew the answer already.
"Peter." Kurogiri confirmed.
"Aw, I wanted to see his sleeping face." Toga pouted.
With Peter:
This was not how Peter had expected his day to go. Aizawa had told them to take an extra hour before coming to school so they could properly rest after the sports festival, but even then, Peter was still late. If he showed up an hour and a half after school was supposed to start, it would look like he was slacking off because he won.
And if his time with Aizawa had taught him anything, Peter knew that wouldn't do him any favors.
Thankfully, he didn't have to stop for his school stuff. He had left it in the classroom yesterday before heading to the sports festival. His only concern was getting there.
There was no time to run through the crowded streets, so Peter used the buildings. Sure it was illegal to use your quirk without a license, but surely there wasn't a law that specifically stated that you couldn't jump from building to building. Just look at all those guys on YouTube who get away with it.
Of course, he did need his powers to get on top of the first building, but eh, who cares? It's not illegal if nobody sees you, everyone knows that.
Using his simple method of running and jumping across the buildings in the downtown district, Peter was making great time. Already he could see UA in the distance. A few more minutes of roof hopping and the school was directly in front of him.
"Oh thank god." Peter exclaimed as he dropped from the building to the street and ran through the front gate. He dashed past the front office and tore through the hallways until he finally reached his classroom. Peter took a few deep breaths to calm himself before throwing the door open.
"I'm sorry I'm late!" He shouted.
This was probably his best bet. If he said he was sorry right from the start, maybe his punishment wouldn't be that bad.
"..."
There was no response. Peter raised his head a bit and saw his classmates were all staring at him, confusion written on their faces.
"Uh, bro? Class hasn't started yet." Kirishima informed him.
"...What!?" Peter gaped at him. He just tore through miles of the city in 15 minutes only to find out class hadn't even begun?
"Yeah, Mr. Aizawa had to handle something and nobody was available to substitute, so he told us to just wait here and do whatever work we had to finish." Mina explained. "And thank god for that. I have sooo much homework I didn't do."
Peter noticed the huge binder sitting in front of Mina, stuffed to the brim with papers and worksheets. Some of them were so old they had dust collected on them.
Peter decided not to complain about this blessing from the heavens and just walked to his seat. There were a few snickers from the class, but that was to be expected after his dramatic entrance. It was then, after crashing into his chair, that Peter realized something.
He didn't have any homework, any books, or anything to entertain himself with. Now look, Peter was a hero. He was a good hero. There were a lot of incredible things most men could only dream of doing that he casually did every day. But for the life of him, he could never wait for anything. Even on stakeouts, he would bring his phone or a book to pass the time.
"Hey Peter." Peter looked to his side and saw Uraraka smiling at him. "If you don't mind me asking, um, I was just wondering...who was the-"
"WHO'S YOUR GIRLFRIEND PETER?!" Uraraka was cut off by a loud shout from Tooru, followed by a loud crashing sound as Peter's desk flipped over. A groan of pain came shortly after.
"...Um, Tooru? Did...did you just try to jump on my desk?" Peter stared at the ground in front of him with the most deadpan expression he had ever formed.
He got no response. The whimpers ended immediately, followed by the floating set of clothes dashing towards the classroom door and smacking the light switch.
"HEY! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING YOU STUPID EXTRA?!" Bakugo's angry shout store through the now pitch black classroom.
Peter had a feeling he knew where this was going. Harry used to do stuff like this when he did something stupid or when it was time for a surprise. So when a flashlight suddenly turned on right in his face, he wasn't very surprised. He did chuckle a bit when he saw that Hagakure was now wearing sunglasses, as was Mina, who was standing next to her.
It wouldn't hurt to play along. Besides, this looked like a fun way to pass some time.
"Uh, am I in trouble?" Peter was a terrible actor, but he liked to think he did a good job faking a confused voice.
"Don't play dumb with us young man. You know why you're here, and we want answers. Answer our questions honestly and quickly, and nothing will happen to you." Peter had to bite his lip to keep himself from laughing at the invisible girl's deep voice.
"OI! DON'T YOU FUCKING IGNORE ME!" Once again, everybody ignored the blonde pomeranian. Actually, nobody really did anything at all. There were no whispers or anything.
"Guess that means they all want answers as well." Peter sweat dropped a little. It was a bit concerning to find out his classmates were this interested in his love life. Still, it was fair. He didn't really talk about himself at all. The only things his classmates actually knew about his personal life was that he came from America and that he was Spider-Man.
For some girl they had never seen or heard of before to suddenly show up and reveal she was his girlfriend, well...that would definitely raise a few questions.
Honestly, Peter was more than happy to talk. He may not be a good liar, but even if he started being weird, they would probably just assume he was nervous or embarrassed. And, to be fair, he was kind of both. But if he calmed them down, they'd stop this whole interrogation act, and Peter really wanted to see how far they would take this.
"W-well, what would you like to know?"
"For starters, who is she? What's her name? Does she go to UA? How did you two meet?" Mina fired off question after question, leaving Peter feeling a bit lost.
"Uh, which question do I answer first?" Peter shrank back a bit at the withering glares the two girls sent his way. "Right, uh, I'll just start with the first one. Well, her name is To...ka. Toka." Peter caught himself at the last second before he accidentally said her real name. Midoriya, Tsu, and Sero all knew the name, so he couldn't use it.
"I really should have cleared all this with her before."
"And as for the other questions...she doesn't go to UA, and we met...A few months ago. I was a bit lost and she showed me around. After that, we started hanging out more, and recently we started...well, you know."
Half lie, half truth. The perfect mixture for Peter.
Mina considered his words for a moment before gesturing to Tooru. The floating sunglasses nodded up and down a few times, followed by the flashlight being lifted out of Peter's face.
"We thank you for your compliance so far, but those were just the easy questions. Now we move on to the hard ones."
Tooru pulled a desk from the side in front of Peter to replace the one she flipped over. Now that there was a desk between them, the invisible girl slammed her hands down on it.
"Do you two live together? Does she have siblings? When was the last time you two- GAH!" Tooru suddenly shrieked when the lights to the classroom flickered back on.
Peter swore he could see "Oh shit" run across Mina's face as she reluctantly turned around. Aizawa was there, his hand still on the light switch. He looked...what's angrier than pissed off? Well, whatever it is, that word would describe the scraggly man perfectly right about now.
"...Return to your desks, shut your mouths, and take off those sunglasses." He growled.
Mina and Tooru didn't argue. They threw the sunglasses off their faces and ran back to their seats. Peter just pushed Uraraka's desk back to her and wordlessly pulled his back upright.
Aizawa continued to glare at them all a little longer. Several tense seconds went by before he heaved one of his signature sighs and walked to the front of the class.
"I apologize for being gone during this time. As I said before, I had important business to take care of and the other teachers are too busy with their own classes to step in for me. Now that I'm back, we have two important things to take care of. I hope you're ready for hell."
It felt colder all of a sudden. Peter checked the windows to see if they had been opened, but they were still shut. Whatever the chill came from, it definitely had to be related to his teacher's unnerving statement.
"First off..." The entire class waited nervously for him to continue. They all had their own grim ideas for what Aizawa had in store for them. "...it's time for you to pick your hero names."
Several crashes rang out as many of the students somehow fell out of their chairs, totally shocked by their teacher's delivery. Why did he have to make everything sound like it would be torture?
"However!" Aizawa continued quickly before the class got the chance to celebrate this good news. "Before that though, we need to discuss your internships, It's time, for all of you, to begin the next stage of your learning."
He wasn't able to stop them this time. The whole class got excited, cheering in their seats over the news.
Meanwhile, Peter was just confused. Internships? Did they have to get jobs? Well, he did need something to do in his spare time.
"After your performance at the sports festival, we received messages from all the pros who attended and those who watched it elsewhere. These messages are requests for you to work at their agencies as sidekicks. You'll spend time with them gaining work experience necessary for you to become a hero. Patrols, crowd control, and training are just a few activities you'll be partaking in."
Aaaand just like that Peter's mood went down. He already knew what to do as a hero. He didn't need one of the heroes to teach him, heck, odds were good that he'd beaten up most of the heroes in the area within his first few weeks in this world.
"What's important to remember is that you're still first years. There's plenty of time for the pros to lose interest in you, so you'd better continue doing your best and shattering your old records, or you'll be left behind. Now, these are the draft pick numbers for those of you who got offers."
Aizawa clicked a button on the remote he produced from out of nowhere, causing the TV at the front of the room to flicker to life. The names of some of the students were written on it, along with numbers next to their names. The display was as follows:
Sero: 14
Uraraka: 20
Tokoyami: 74
Kirishima: 108
Momo: 272
Mina: 338
Kirishima: 342
Kaminari: 739
Midoriya: 801
Bakugo: 3,456
Todoroki: 4,123
Peter: All the votes
"..."
"...Um, Mr. Aizawa? I think there might be some kind of mistake with the offers." Peter shyly raised his hand.
"I assure you, there is not. Every hero who attended the sports festival was impressed by your performance. Your tactics, your creativity, and your special care in making sure none of your attacks harmed the audience all drew their attention. Nobody wanted to count every single offer, so we just said you got all the votes.
Somewhere in the classroom, a certain explosive boy screamed about how stupid this was.
"Now, for those of you who didn't get any offers, relax. You will all be given the chance to work with a pro. This is where your hero names come in. Be sure to pick something appropriate-"
"OR ELSE YOU'LL KNOW TRUE HELL!" A new voice joined in the conversation. All eyes were on the door to the hallway as a new person walked in.
"God damn it." Peter groaned, ducking his head down before any problems arose. Literally.
Midnight had joined the class, and of course she walked in doing an...interesting pose.
"The name you pick now may be what the world ends up calling you. That's happened to plenty of pros out there!" She continued her mini-lecture as she strutted to the front of the class.
"She's exactly right. Midnight here will be helping you choose sensible hero names. I'm no good at that." Aizawa spoke up as he pulled out his sleeping bag. "Try to be done soon."
Aizawa continued speaking about how important names were while Midnight passed out whiteboards for everybody, but Peter wasn't really listening. He didn't need to, after all. He already had his hero name.
15 minutes passed before everybody finished writing out their names. Peter had written his name as soon as he got the board, so he passed the time by drawing pictures around the name. Web designs, spiders, logos, and costume designs. It reminded him of when he was just starting out and filled notebook after notebook with design ideas.
He was right in the middle of drawing a totally awesome looking mask when Midnight announced it was time for them to present their names. Aoyama was the first out of his seat, walking proudly to the front of class with his board.
"Prepare yourselves, for the shining hero...I CANNOT STOP TWINKLING!" He dramatically announced with his board held high.
"IT'S A WHOLE SENTENCE!" Peter struggled to not burst out laughing. Midnight gave him some "helpful" advice to take out the "I" and to change "cannot" to "can't."
Afterwards was Mina, who wanted to be called "Alien Queen." The name was quickly shot down by Midnight.
"What!? I love those movies! Man, now I've really got to talk to Mina."
Next up was Tsu, whose name was "Froppy." Peter liked it, the name sounded cute. After that, everybody else seemed to gain more confidence and lined up to present their names one after the other.
Kirishima was "Red Riot," which was probably a reference that Peter didn't understand. After that was Jiro, who wanted "Earphone Jack" and the names only continued from there.
Cellophane, Invisible Girl, Tentacole, Creati, Tailman…
"Wait, hold up, go back a few. Tentacole? I, I don't...I don't get it. Is it a joke?" [1]
While Peter was scratching his head trying to figure out Shoji's name, his classmates continued proudly displaying their names. He didn't even notice when it was his turn.
"Peter, you're next. Come on up.
"Wait, I've actually got to present? But, don't you all know my name already?" Peter weakly defended. It did nothing against Midnight's hard stare. Peter sighed and stood up, walking over to the front of the room.
"Well uh, this probably won't surprise...any of you. But, here's the hero name I want to continue using." Peter turned his board around, showing the class his name, along with all his little drawings.
The class seemed to like it, but Midnight still had a frown on her face. She remained silent though, not saying a word as Peter returned to his seat.
Soon, the names were all finished. Aizawa handed them all sheets of paper with the agencies who sent them offers listed. As everybody filled out of the class, Midnight hung back and stopped Peter from leaving.
"Peter, a word?"
"Um, sure." Peter shrugged and followed Midnight a short ways down the hall.
"Listen, I know you're attached to the name, but I wouldn't recommend using it. When people hear the name Spider-Man, they think of a vigilante. It'll be tough for you to gain popularity when people associate your name with a criminal. However, there may be an alternative."
Peter perked up a little, curious as to what she meant.
"Might I suggest a new costume? Your current suit is certainly useful, but once again, it's tied to your time as a vigilante. If you create a new one, it may help people to see you as a new person, sort of like a physical metaphor for leaving your past behind."
Peter was a bit surprised. Not only was the option simple, but it was odd given who the advice came from. Not once during this conversation had Midnight struck a pose, changed her tone, or done anything inappropriate.
"Huh. I guess she is a professional hero with plenty of experience. It makes sense for her to know what she's talking about."
"Alright, I'll think about it. Thank you Ma'am." Peter bowed respectfully before making his way back down the hall.
Once outside, he headed straight to the train station. This had become his normal cycle. Mirko no longer expected him home until dinner time thanks to his regular late returns. Peter boarded the train that would take him downtown, to his friends.
Upon reaching the bar with no name, Peter hesitated in front of the door. He knew what awaited him inside. Taking a deep breath, he pushed the door open slowly.
"Hey everyone. I'm he-OOF!" Peter grunted in surprise. The instant he opened the door, Toga collided with him roughly. The impact knocked him off his feet and onto his back, causing him to shoot back into the alley.
"Hey Peter." Toga greeted him cheerfully.
"H-hey Toga."
"How'd my spider sense not detect her?"
"Hey, there he is! How's life treating you kid?" Dabi walked outside to the pair, extending his hand to Peter. The boy took it gratefully and pulled himself up.
"Don't think we forgot about the door! It was a pain in the ass to fix you know! I'm getting tired of you breaking our door!" Magne shouted from somewhere inside the building. Peter just laughed a little at her shouting.
He tried to walk in, but was stopped by a weight on his back.
Toga was still leaning on him, refusing to walk on her own.
"..."
"..."
Neither of them said a word. Toga was expectant and Peter was confused. Dabi decided to offer a little advice, bending down a little to whisper in Peter's ear.
"She got angry when Kurogiri told her you carried her in her sleep. Now she wants to be carried while she's awake."
Toga apparently heard him because her smile grew when Dabi finished. Peter looked between the two of them a few times, making sure Dabi wasn't messing with him.
"Is that all? That's fine, I can carry you." Peter was used to carrying people, sometimes multiple at once. Oh New York buildings, they catch on fire so easily.
Peter held his arms in front of him, preparing to lift Toga. She didn't bother waiting for him. Instead, she just jumped straight at him, landing roughly on his arms. Peter thanked the spider that bit him for giving him super strength. If he dropped her, there'd be hell to pay. Even he knew that.
Not that Toga was heavy, just that Peter hadn't expected her to jump at him suddenly.
That's twice now. Why doesn't the spider sense go off?"
Shaking his head a little, Peter shifted his arms a little before following Dabi into the bar. He didn't want to look down at Toga. She would probably do something to embarrass him, and he did not want to risk getting flustered while carrying her.
"So, how was scho- OH HELL NO! THIS IS NOT HAPPENING!" Magne cut her greeting short to shout at what she was seeing.
"But whyyy Big Sis Mag? You let us kiss before, why can't he carry me?" Toga whined.
"It's not the carrying itself Toga, it's...this." Magne gestured wildly at the scene before her.
Peter didn't really understand what she meant. He walked into the bar princess carrying Toga. Plus he could feel her head resting in the crook of his arm, and she was likely smiling…
Okay, he saw the problem.
Magne didn't care about short displays of affection. This was lasting too long and grating on her sisterly instincts.
Peter quickly put Toga down, much to the vampire girl's dismay.
"So, as I was saying, how was school?" Magne's smile and friendly attitude returned in a blink.
"Well, we didn't really do much. We chose hero names, but I've already got one, so it didn't matter all that much. OH! We also have to choose which hero we'll be interning with. That'll be...fun." Peter tried to convince himself with his words. DId it work?
Hell no. This was going to suck.
"Ugh. You have to hang around one of the false heroes?" Spinner shook his head in disgust. The lizard man walked forward and placed his hand on Peter's shoulders, like he was comforting him after a traumatic event.
"Yeah, and to make it worse," Peter walked to the bar counter and turned his backpack upside down. Dozens of papers, each one filled with different hero agencies, spilled out onto the counter. "I have no idea who most of these people are."
"Hm. No doubt they are all frauds and fakes." Mr. Compress said disdainfully as he glared at the papers from behind his mask.
"Yeah, well, I'm sure they aren't bad people. Bad reasons or not, they're still helping people. I just hope I choose one who's a genuinely good person."
"We can help with that." Kurogiri joined the conversation.
"Yeah, yeah! We know all kinds of heroes! What they're like, what they do, and how they operate. We can definitely help you choose a good one." Toga agreed, pulling up the stool next to Peter.
Peter smiled at all of them, grateful for the help. He noticed Shigaraki and Twice weren't around, but didn't bother questioning it. He probably wouldn't get answers if he asked.
2 hours.
Peter and his friends sorted through the papers for 2. Damn. Hours.
Finally down to one final paper, Peter felt ready to make his decision. Many of the villains had fallen asleep from sheer boredom by now, leaving only Peter and Spinner, who felt inclined to find a "worthy hero." Kurogiri was there too, but he hadn't really offered much advice.
The remaining heroes were the ones that Spinner had grudgingly admitted weren't completely terrible. He still believed them to be false heroes, but he didn't think they were as selfish as most others.
Peter scanned through the papers carefully, not wanting to miss any details. He had felt for a while now that he knew who he wanted to go with. She seemed like the obvious choice after all. The two of them were very similar in how they behaved. They did the same kind of jobs, worked in similar areas, and even their personalities matched pretty well.
He still didn't think this internship would be very rewarding, but maybe with her it could be fun.
"Spinner, what about her?" Peter raised the final paper, showing the name to the lizard man.
"...She is still one of the false heroes, but she may be a good choice. She helps civilians before fighting the villains, works to keep the people happy, and doesn't endlessly pursue fame or wealth. I believe...I believe she will do." Spinner nodded, showing his approval.
"Well then, I guess it's decided." Peter took the paper back, smiling at the name.
Whatever happened next, it was sure to be interesting.
Well, this is my shitty return. Hope you all enjoyed my borderline filler chapter. Oh, and I didn't have time to spellcheck this time around, so if you see an issue, feel free to PM me and I'll fix it later. That goes for my other chapters as well. I'm happy to fix my old errors.
[1]: To this day, I still don't get the joke behind "Tentacole." Is it a reference I'm not understanding? Is it a translation issue? Somebody help me, it's the only name that doesn't make sense to me.
This is unrelated, but do you know what I think shows how good a story is? If the author can take an idea you aren't interested in but still get you to enjoy the story. If it's a topic you dislike or a character you don't appreciate but you like the story regardless, that just proves how good it is.
I remember like a year ago, I read this one fic on this site called "Opposites Attract." My friend had told me it was really good so I decided to check it out. It ended up being an Izuku x Mei story, which isn't exactly...my favorite ship, but I didn't have anything better to do, so I tried it anyway.
And goddamn.
It was actually really good.
The author did a great job writing it. This dude took a ship I don't even like, made an entire story based on it, and I actually enjoyed it. This is what I'm talking about. When somebody takes something you dislike and makes you enjoy it anyway, that's how you know the story's good.
So if you see a story with something you don't like but it sounds interesting, give it a shot. You never know, the author might surprise you. Oh, by the way, the author of the story was "GodAmongGods," for those of you who want to try out the story.
Thanks for reading and remember to leave a review.
Aren signing off.
