Chapter 35: Welcome to Makai.
The wind built by the movement of the train served to raise the tension in the air as the Human Prince lied on the platform a few feet behind his feline savior. He left in utter awe.
S-She saved me, Naruto thought with wide eyes as he panted exhaustedly.
Kurama grumbled from within his cousin's mind, dissatisfied with the fact that the boy had been overwhelmed with ease. "Disgraceful. My own chakra was invested into nothing." He turned his head in a regal manner as he looked through the boy's eyes. "I expected you'd wipe the floors with that Zombie, but all I got in the end was you falling over yourself like a weakling."
Give me a break! I didn't even know how to use your own chakra in the first place! Naruto retorted and struggled to get up, exhausted from his ordeal. He tried to keep his eyes on Raptor. Last I heard, you're the only one who could teach me how to use the chakra of a Bijuu. You're not a good teacher if all you're just going to do is lecture me.
The fox only growled. "I see that. When we are done here, boy, I will personally train you on how to use my power."
Naruto then focused on Felicia, wondering how she got here while getting up and who she was in general before coming to a conclusion. She's the woman Morrigan mentioned earlier.
Meanwhile, the Catwoman glared at the undead rockstar. Her pupils turned into slits while she flexed her pink claws, ready to tear into the Zombie at a moment's notice. "So, it's either run now or get torn apart. Your choice, Raptor."
"Despite the runt getting in the way, I've already completed my mission, love." Raptor burst out laughing as he lifted his head towards the air and held his hands to his sides. "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Felicia only growled as she stepped forward. "What's so funny, you undead freak!"
He wiped a fake tear from his eye socket as he faced his feline adversary. "Oh, it's nothin' big, love. It's just that the poor ankle-biter thought he had a chance of slowing me down." The Zombie burst into another fit of merriment. "I have to say, the bloke actually pissed me off with those damn claws of his—"
Caught off guard in mid-sentence, Felicia grinned and became a blur to the eye. Before he even knew it, the female Darkstalker appeared before him with her fist reared back. Raptor didn't even get the chance to move as she slugged him so hard that he was sent flying back towards the last car on the train, knocking him out.
"Really now?" The Catwoman stood tall and crossed her arms, a confident smile now etched on her face. "Then you must have severely underestimated him, or he's almost as strong as you. Now that's really letting yourself go after so long."
The Human Prince finally rose onto his two feet and began to approach the Darkstalker curiously. It didn't take long for her to help close the gap between the two of them.
"I heard about you from Morrigan! And from what Raptor over there said! " Naruto shouted over the wind with an exhausted smile. "Felicia, is it?"
"It is. Pleased to meet ya," the Catwoman returned as she reached out for a handshake.
The Human Prince's eyelids began to droop as he reached out to return the handshake. He had gone through so much in the last hour that it was hard to believe that he could keep going in his state.
The feline Darkstalker noticed this and grew concern at the boy's state as she put her hand down. However, the mission had to come first. "I know you look tired, but we need to stop this train as best we can."
"Understood," Naruto firmly agreed with a nod as he shifted to see the head of the train. The Human Prince could see Morrigan and Jon fighting Jedah on the platform. "Let's go!"
With that said, they both ran towards the head of the locomotive to complete their mission.
With Morrigan, Jon, and Jedah...
It was The Succubus's turn to fight the demon lord while the Werewolf was busy tearing apart the cab. Inside was a mess of deep claw marks and metal shrapnel torn out and strewn about.
Jon raised his hand into the air and gathered his chakra into his palm as it spiraled around and became a purple orb with a golden core.
"Rasengan!"
He slammed the spiraling force into the floor. In an instant, the technique broke through the metal interior and set off a chain reaction. The Iron Horse Iron Terror's eye began to fluctuate into neon and pastel colors at random while veins protruded out from the stress.
It was then and there that Jon realized his mistake. It's setting off.
Meanwhile, Morrigan sent her heel into Jedah's face and knocked him back as orange demonic energy formed in her right hand. She grabbed it with her left and fired it off point-blank.
"Soul Fist!"
An orange skull shot from her hand and impacted the Dark Messiah's chest, sending him back to the railing and making the metal bend to his shape. He leaned back and growled knowing that he couldn't unleash his full strength. The head of the train was unprotected from the enchantments he put on the base of the cars.
Jedah put his hands on the bar and tried to get up, unamused with the raiders that sabotaged his initial plan. He panted as he tried to contain his rage. "Damn you, Morrigan, damn you!"
The Succubus's eyes turned to the inside of the engine room. She felt space being distorted and bending the very fabric of reality and her eyes widened. The Queen of Makai spread her wings out in case of an attack as she quickly called out, never turning away from the demon lord, "Jon, it's starting!"
"Morrigan!" Felicia shouted as both she and Naruto came on board the platform, rushing to the Succubus.
Morrigan knew her friend and the Human Prince were right behind her, but couldn't turn to them. A sense of urgency filled her voice. "Felicia, the plan's a bust. We need to retreat back to the castle!"
The Catwoman nodded in agreement as she turned to see a familiar face come out from the engine room. "Jon?"
"Felicia?" Jon turned his head in slight surprise that she was here.
"Now's not the time! We need to regroup and head back to Makai!" the Succubus shouted. "Felicia, open the rift!"
"Got it!" The Catwoman put her arms forward, the back of her hands facing each other. She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the demonic energy in the air and trying to harness it while resonating it with her power. The feeling of warmth spread around her body like wildfire until it gathered around her claws as they glowed a neon blue. There!
With a forceful grunt, Felicia then used her claws to tear open a blue double-sided portal in front of her. A whirring sound emanated throughout the air as it became louder than the train.
Naruto looked on in fascination and skepticism. If what Morrigan was saying was true, he would be heading to a realm where the souls of the wicked went when they died. It seemed like a risk since he was just mortal. He took a deep breath, sensing some sort of power emanating from the rift. His breath came to a shudder as it all became too much for him. I-I can't do this.
"Calm down," Kurama sternly instructed. "They wouldn't be making a portal if they knew you couldn't go to that realm."
I guess you're right. Naruto agreed worriedly as he looked over the blue portal. He wondered what would happen once he entered the demonic realm.
"Have you ever heard them say anything negative about what happens when a mortal crosses over to that world? You will probably be one of the first humans to enter Makai in a long time without having to be dead," the fox said, accepting whatever may happen once they entered the realm. "This is a privilege that no one else in the world would be able to have, except for you. Don't squander it."
The Jinchūriki rolled his eyes in annoyance, his hesitation disappearing thanks to his cousin's lecture.
"It's ready! We have to go now!" Felicia shouted to Morrigan, who was behind the rift.
Without a moment of hesitation, Felicia and Morrigan entered the portal, the creator of it jumping in while the latter merely levitated backwards into it.
The Werewolf at the moment was skeptical. He didn't know what would happen if Naruto stepped in. But the boy followed along with little hesitation and entered the portal.
Looking over at the other side of the car, Jedah stood on both feet as if he was unfazed from Morrigan's attack. The Dark Messiah smiled madly. "You may have stopped my plans with your little group this time, Talbain, but it won't be the end; your trials in hell will now begin."
Jon only grunted and jumped through the portal, uncaring of the demon lord's words as he disappeared into the blue light.
Jedah kept his eyes on the glowing gateway, witnessing it shrink until nothing was left. He could only grit his teeth, knowing that his train would need repairing. And then there was the fact Morrigan and her allies would have to be taken out of the picture.
Somewhere in Makai...
Felicia's blue portal opened up as she came through, Morrigan following along. The Catwoman's emerald orbs scanned around, looking to see where they were. Naruto and Jon followed shortly afterward through the portal as it closed behind them. Everyone looked around to see their surroundings.
Makai was a realm of eternal night. Star clusters created a colorful display, and their beauty that lit the sky. They were so bright, in fact, that there was no need to have a moon.
The Human Prince looked around and saw that from the high point on a mountain, they could see all of Makai and what Morrigan had built in her time as Queen. He noticed that the ground they were standing on had a light purple tint. All around them looked like a dark forest that went downhill from the mountain.
"Naruto, are you alright?" the Lycanthrope asked in concern as he came up from behind the boy and put a hand on his right shoulder.
"Yes, Oji, I'm fine," Naruto swiftly replied as he looked around.
"Ahh, home sweet home," Morrigan swooned with a loving glance as she got everyone sans Felicia's attention. She stood by the edge of a cliff looking at something miles off into the distance.
The Jinchūriki and Werewolf turned to see what Morrigan was talking about as they looked past the cliff and their eyes widened in astonishment.
Off in the distance past a supposed combination of a light purple wasteland with patches of forests and countryside layed what seemed to be a massive dark semi-suburban metropolis only several miles away. What surrounded it was three other mountains that had a sharp chunk taken out of them in a specific blade-like shape. On the left of it seemed to be some sort of multicolored city not far from. However, there was something else that was a sight to behold.
What really took the cake was the beautiful gothic nightmares levitating above the civilization of Makai, dark, gigantic castles that had glowing orange, green, and red-painted glass windows as if the lights were on, giving it an eerie air about it. They had bowlers, a series of arcades, pointed arcs, and stone construction with wooden accents made the base of what gave the castles' their frightful aura. The castles were sitting atop floating rocks cut out of the mountains like puzzle pieces.
Morrigan turned back towards Jon with a sweet smile on her face. "A lot of things have changed down here. And I think after tonight's thrill fest, we've earned ourselves some rest." She waved her hand for them to follow.
"Wait, you're just letting us stay at your castle?" Naruto asked curiously as he stepped forward.
"Aye, it's been a long night for all of us. And it wouldn't be nice if the people I've employed put in so much work only to sleep out in the streets of my city."
With droopy eyes, the Human Prince gave the biggest smile he could ever have at the moment. He was so tired from this mission and his battles with Jedah's cultists that he was ready to collapse. The boy didn't want to think or do anything at the moment; he just wanted to sleep.
"Tch, so much work is needed if you're going to wield my power, brat," the Kyūbi stated begrudgingly. "The next time you fight that Zombie, you will use my strength to crush him. As my cousin, you will make sure he stays down the next time you see him."
Yes... Naruto couldn't even finish his response. His body swerved as he tried to keep himself from falling asleep.
Jon's eyes widened at Naruto's exhausted state and was quick to approach the boy. He put a hand on his shoulder once more. "Naruto, are you alright?"
It took a moment for the Human Prince to process what his captain was saying as he slowly blinked, "I'm fine, taichou... just a little tired..."
From their right, Felicia stepped forward towards the two. "A little is an exaggeration after that battle, kiddo. You need to get to a bed."
"I have some nice, warm beds back at Aensland Castle," Morrigan chimed in, coming towards them. "I'm sure you'll love them."
Naruto nodded in agreement and was caught by surprise as the Werewolf picked him up and carried him as if he was a child. The Human Prince leaned in and wrapped his arms around his captain's shoulders, sleep taking him into its hold. He didn't protest, not in the slightest; he was still twelve, still young, and could care less so long as he got to rest.
Jon was about to walk down the mountain with Felicia in tow when the Queen of Makai quickly went to his left side and put a hand on his godson's head. She channeled demonic power into her palm, making sure the boy was sent off to sleep.
The Succubus pulled away with a hum of approval; her work was done as her golden gaze shifted towards the Lycanthrope and the Catwoman. "Let's head home."
With that said, they traveled towards the metropolis, putting all thoughts of tonight's mission aside to rest and recuperate. Tomorrow was another day. They stopped Jedah's initial plans, but that was just the beginning.
One day later...
After yesterday's events, it all seemed like a dream in some manner.
Naruto groaned as he rolled onto his left side, the sound of his steady breathing almost hypnotic as his eyes remained closed. The boy brought the pillow his head was on closer to snuggle with it, wanting to stay asleep. However, the Human Prince knew he had to get up sooner or later. After all, he still had work to do.
The Human Prince felt around and touched something much softer than his bed and blankets at his apartment or the one back at the warren. It was plush like a marshmallow, and he felt as if he could sink in down towards the floor.
He finally opened his eyes to see a scarlet red pillow. Now that was unusual. The Human Prince only had plain pillows back at home and blue ones at the warren. He then looked past to see a veil that had the same shade of red.
Blinking his eyes open a few times to get his bearings, Naruto sat up straight and looked around, shocked at what he saw. He was in a king-size canopy bed with a theme of scarlet and velvet red. The Human Prince pulled back the curtain that separated him from the rest of the room. He saw a brown rug, a beige wall, and a finely varnished red and gold luxury dresser in front of him with a mirror that caught his confused reflection.
Where am I? And what happened to me? Naruto mentally questioned in concern as he stood from the bed and tried to walk towards the mirror. However, he felt a pain in his spine as he tried to move. He was probably sleeping for a long time, but for how long?
The Human Prince then noticed that he had been dressed down into his bed shorts and one of his clan's shirts. His headband, pockets, storage scrolls, and jacket were missing.
The Jinchūriki then looked towards the mirror and saw that his spiky lion's mane was matted down into bedhead. Naruto's eyes widened as he came to a realization, his brain still waking up. I'm in Morrigan's castle.
Just as he reflected on that, the memories from yesterday came flooding into his mind. The raid, the cultists he fought off, The battle on the train, his first three kills...
Naruto brought his hand to his head and closed his eyes, guilt running through him as the memories seemed to stab into his heart. A lone tear streaked down his face as he tried to suppress it.
The Human Prince tried to keep his mind off it as he then remembered that his jacket and shirt were torn from Raptor's attack. That jacket was a gift from his father, and it was made in Usagi no Kuni, his home. He brought a hand forward to ghost over his chest while inwardly speaking to the beast within.
Kyūbi? Kyūbi, are you there? Naruto listened for his cousin's response. Seconds passed by as he heard nothing from the beast.
If it meant not being alone in this strange place, if it helped take his mind off the guilt he felt, he would gladly listen to his cousin call him a brat. The Human Prince stomped on the floor in frustration. Damn it!
In that instant, the door clicked open. Naruto jumped a bit as a response.
The door fully opened to reveal some sort of demon that had a monstrous appearance. With a form that was short and stalky, the creature looked akin to a ragdoll with cartoonish features and stitched patches all over. Its mouth appeared to be sewn shut and it had big brown eyes. The demon wore a very formal tuxedo that was fit for a gentleman. He held what could appear to be a stack of clothing, his headband, and his two shoes.
The short... ragdoll looked around to see the blonde standing by the mirror with shock in his eyes. He opened his stitched mouth, threads being the only things that connected his lips, and greeted the boy with sincerity in a goofy voice, "Why hello there."
It was at that moment that Naruto jumped back as his eyes turned red and slitted. He focused chakra to his right hand to form a pink crystal kunai while he widened his stance into a battle position. "Who are you?"
The demon jumped back in fright until his back met the wall. "Wait, please let me explain!"
"Make it quick," the Human Prince demanded as he held his position firmly.
"My name is Mudo. I'm one of Morrigan's servants here in Aensland Castle!" the ragdoll demon quickly explained out of fear. "After you passed out, my Queen advised your superior that you be put into this room for rest!"
Naruto shattered the knife and stood from his battle stance, his eyes returning to their blue state. He crossed his arms, still skeptic of the creature.
Seeing that he was no longer in danger, the demon calmed down and began to speak once more. "Your old outfit was torn from battle yesterday, and your other garments are with your captain at the moment. In the meantime, my lady has gotten you something to wear while a new battle attire is being made by our finest tailor." He presented clothing to the boy, which also included his headband.
Naruto calmed down and walked towards the creature with a disturbed and jaded look on his face.
"Young master, are you alright?" Mudo asked in concern as he looked up towards the boy.
"Oh yeah... I'm fine..." the Human Prince replied distractedly while shaking his head. He still had a lot on his mind.
"You should bathe yourself before you head out. Morrigan will be making an announcement to all of Makai soon. You will see your captain there as well, young master." Mudo then motioned towards the opposite side of the room from the mirror to reveal a closed door that led to the bathroom.
Naruto didn't say another word as he gratefully took the clothes into his arms and went towards the washroom to clean up.
"Be sure to be ready within the hour. My lady wishes for you to be there for her announcements," Mudo kindly informed and turned to the door. "I'll be waiting out here until you are finished so you can be escorted to the assembly."
"I will. Don't worry."
The boy turned around and entered the washroom to take a shower. The Human Prince walked into a large room. On his left, there were granite floors, sink tops with accessories for hygiene, and a large mirror seven feet across. On his right, there was and a very large walk-in shower with glass doors and a bench within.
Wow... Naruto thought as he looked around. He then looked towards the shower. He didn't have much time to admire it though, the Queen of Makai was expecting him to be at the assembly where he could meet up with his captain; it'd be nice to be around a familiar face.
Fifteen minutes later...
Naruto changed into the new clothes Morrigan had chosen for him along with some blue jean shorts and a black V-neck t-shirt. He donned his headband once more, ready to meet with the Queen of Makai.
During his time in the shower, he felt the stress of yesterday completely wash away. There were still things that put his mind at total unrest, but he would have to push them down and try to hold them off until he could talk to someone about his problems. He killed three people, and he would never forget what he had done. Just the thought alone made him feel sick to his stomach; he could almost feel the burn of bile in his throat.
To keep his mind busy, Naruto then looked himself in the mirror and saw how he looked in the new clothing the Succubus had given him. He couldn't help but crack a small smile at his new attire; the Human Prince looked cool. Wow, Morrigan really knew what I liked.
"She must have paid attention to what you were wearing and decided to give you something akin to your old attire," Kurama suddenly surmised, much to Naruto's surprise.
The Jinchūriki froze at his reflection. Kyūbi...
"Yes, what is it, brat?"
Did you hear my thoughts from earlier? Naruto mentally asked with worry. He didn't care if his cousin belittled his problems, but right now he needed someone he was familiar with to talk to.
"Yes, and I believe your issues lie with that Werewolf; he's the one that put you on this mission," the fox informed as he stood up from the mindscape. "My advice still holds, little cousin. You must turn your heart to steel if you wish to survive this path you have chosen. Being a shinobi means you must soak your hands in blood and do what is needed, not what is wanted."
The Human Prince's gaze went to the floor as he listened to the advice he failed to integrate into his training early on. He then turned up to the mirror to see his pained look in the reflective surface.
"Go where that Succubus wants you to attend and meet up with him. We'll talk about this later."
Kurama was firmer on his stance for him to harden himself as a part of the job. As for that last sentence, Naruto couldn't help but feel his cousin's sympathy; it was hidden really well, but Naruto knew that the beast was coming to care for him.
Taking a deep breath to compose himself, Naruto walked out of the bathroom and to the door outside. There, he would follow his escort to the location where Morrigan would make her announcement. There was a lot to be done, especially with the mission gone bust.
Now c'mon people, speak up. Should I quit and leave the site since I'm not engaging you all in any way, or should I just keep posting? You tell me.
They're all in Makai now, and the fun has just begun.
I'd like to thank my beta for all her oversight and process of the story.
