Chapter 35
Lena pulled the car over about half a mile from the fence that indicted where the property in Jeremiah Danver's name started. They went over the plan one more time before heading up over the nearby grassy hill to see if they could get a better view of the property without giving away that they were there. They had no idea if the Luthors had booby-trapped anything and they were hoping the setting sun would provide them some cover.
"So what do those x-ray eyeballs seeing?" Kate asked as she changed into her suit.
"Extensive underground tunnels. This wasn't some space thrown together in one afternoon," Kara frowned.
"Well a Luthor never does anything half way," Lena admitted. They'd decided that if she was going to join them in their venture, that she needed a costume of her own. It basically consisted of a black ski cap, bulletproof vest, and black clothing. She'd blend into the surroundings much better as the sun would soon be out of sight and that would help protect her. It might also help her hide inside the facility if she needed to – a dark corner was better than being caught by her family or their goons.
"Do you see an entrance?" M'gann wondered.
"Nothing on this end but the dirt road continues for almost a mile. It looks like it ends in between a couple of small hills," the blonde admitted.
"Best way to conceal the entrance is to not have it near the road. Those hills could conceal doors," J'onn pointed out.
"Everybody dressed?" Kara wanted to know.
"I kind of want my civilian clothes back. Any chance we can drop them in the car? I mean I don't think I can explain this look to the guys at the airport," Kate chuckled. The intention was to keep Nia and Kate's identities safe when they headed back to Lena's plane with the two Luthors. Kara and the Martians could change out of their suits much more easily.
"I've got it," M'gann offered. She took the two duffels and disappeared. Gone only a couple of minutes, the White Martian was back.
"Ok, here we go. Everyone grab a buddy," Kara smirked. M'gann took hold of Nia's shoulder and the two were soon in the air. J'onn did the same with Lena.
"Oh the indignity," Kate teased as Kara scooped her up.
"Never viewed yourself as the damsel in distress, did you?" The blonde chuckled as they took to the skies. Once over the barbed wire fence, they flew low to avoid any radar. Kara noted that the dirt road was coming to an end and they dropped down behind the hill on the right hand side of the road. Kara quickly used her x-ray vision again and confirmed an entrance location. What surprised her was that the entrance was in the road between the two hills. While the easiest way to get vehicles in and out, she wondered how that would be good for when the weather was not favorable.
"No silent entry unless we go in in pairs," J'onn said.
"Doesn't look like we have much of a choice. There is a stairwell off to the left. Head down and we'll make a few trips," Kara nodded. J'onn nodded and grabbed Lena while M'gann grabbed Nia.
"No going back now," Kate said before the Martians reappeared. Kara didn't get a chance to ask her friend about it before they were whisked inside the facility.
"Quite a large place to be so quiet," Nia kept her tone down and was concerned by the lack of activity. Silence was good but sometimes not as good as it could be.
"I haven't seen any humans on my scan but there are also sections of the facility that appear to be lead-lined," Kara was not happy about that.
"Let's get down. There have to be cameras somewhere in here," Kate whispered.
"You'd be surprised. Sometimes it's better to not have what you're doing on film," Lena quietly commented. Kate made a note to ask the raven-haired woman about that later. They made their way down the steps and quickly fanned out in pairs – J'onn and Kate, M'gann and Nia, and Kara and Lena.
The large room at the bottom of the steps looked like it should have been holding vehicles but there wasn't anything but oil stains left behind. Kara tried to look through a nearby door only to find it too was lead-lined. She gingerly tried the handle and found it unlocked. The blonde jerked her head toward the door and Lena followed her inside.
"Lexosuits…" Lena looked at the quantity and had a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. There were racks of them that filled the large warehouse space.
"Hundreds of them," Kara couldn't believe it.
"Lex isn't in here. The lights were off when we came in and they turned on automatically via sensor. Come on," Lena turned around and they headed back out to the main room. Kara wondered why the door was lead-lined but she didn't get to think about it for very long as alarms started going off throughout the building.
"What the…" the blonde started.
"That's not a security alert," Lena said.
"What is it?" Kara asked.
"It's a launch alert. He's launching something," the Luthor told her. The blonde did not hesitate and shot up into the space and through the ceiling and the dirt that covered it. Once clear of the facility, she saw what she thought looked like a missile bay door opening. She dove for the entrance hoping to stop whatever was attempting to leave the space only to be confronted with the tip of a missile covered in Kryptonite. Forced back, she shouted into her comms. She needed help.
