I know some people prefer Shooting Straight, but I hope you won't mind too much if I spend some time on this story. I had a strong pull to go back to this story and write about a reunited Callie and Arizona in New York.
It would be super easy for me to write a big happy ever after chapter and end this, but after all the hours I've given to getting it to this point, I want it to seem realistic and not rush it.
I'm so happy how many people like my other story, but I know some of you are sticking true to the original characters and so I hope you like this update.
Fourteen days later and Arizona got her period.
Callie came home late one night after a long day, way after Sofia's bedtime and found an empty downstairs. Assuming Arizona had gone to bed, Callie walked to the fridge to pour herself a glass of wine when she saw Arizona's note on the whiteboard they used to remind them about Sofia's play dates or who was on pick up/drop off duty.

Callie stopped and absorbed what those three words meant. Arizona's period had come so the insemination hadn't worked. Callie opened the fridge and saw the bottle of wine had already been opened and so she grabbed it and a spare glass and dashed up the stairs. Taking two steps at a time she reached the bathroom door and took a deep breath to calm herself before gently knocking on the bathroom door.
"Ari. Can I come in?"
Arizona closed her eyes and took a deep breath "Sure" Arizona replied from the other side of the bathroom door and smiled as she saw Callie's concerned face. It was good to see her.
Callie held up the bottle and Arizona nodded from her position in the bath and watched as the brunette topped her glass up before pouring herself a glass and sitting down by the side of the bath.
Arizona saw the concern on Callie's face.
"I'm fine Cal" Arizona said smiling softly. Callie narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"Honestly" she said knowing that Callie was worried about her. "it was just the first attempt. We'll try again next month".
Callie lent over and kissed her girlfriend on the forehead "we will. I guess it would have been like getting pregnant the first time you had sex!" Callie said as she looked at the blonde making sure she wasn't putting on an act.
"Exactly." Arizona looked at her girlfriend "We knew this wasn't going to be easy. The main things is to not let it become all encompassing. We can't let it take over our lives. If it happens...it happens...and it doesn't work, we go to plan B."
They really were just at the start of a long journey and so when Arizona spotted the start of her period earlier that day at work, she had decided to put it out of her mind for the rest of the day. It hadn't worked. They would try again.
She had thought about calling Callie with the news, but knew she had a big surgery and so had cooked dinner for Sofia, watched some TV and then run herself a bath to help with the cramps. As she was leaving the note on the fridge she decided to have a glass of wine. She hadn't had a drink in over a month and pulled out the cold bottle of white and poured herself a glass.
"How was your surgery?" Arizona asked keen to change the subject. Not because she was too upset to talk about, but because she meant what she had said to Callie, she didn't want them trying to have a child define them as a couple. They needed to keep as much a sense of normality as possible.

Callie came home from work one night all excited following some great news about her research.
"Arizona?" Callie called as she opened the door.
"We're upstairs" Arizona yelled down as she tucked their daughter into bed and snuggled next to her with the current book they were reading. A few minutes later and Callie popped her head round the door.
"Hey you!" She said warmly as she took in the view of Arizona lying on top of the bed and Sofia tucked up, resting her head on Arizona's lap. It was a sight she never tired of seeing and even after the shittiest of days at work, it always made her smile.
"Mama!" Sofia said excitedly as Callie walked in and gave Arizona a soft kiss on the lips before walking round to the other side of the bed and shuffling next to her daughter. Arizona glanced over at Callie and the two shared a loving look. Callie had been living with them for nearly six months now, but Arizona always loved the moment the brunette came home and they read to their daughter together.
The three of them read the chapter and after goodnight kisses, Callie and Arizona switched off the light and carefully closed the door to their daughter's bedroom.
Arizona looked at Callie who seemed to be glowing this evening.
"How was your day sweet?" Arizona asked as she started to head towards the stairs when she felt Callie grab her by the wrist. Arizona turned round to see what Callie was doing only to be pushed against the wall, followed by Callie's lips on hers.
The brunette's tongue forced its way into Arizona's warm mouth and the kiss quickly intensified. Arizona let out a small moan of pleasure as she felt a firm thigh slip between her legs and push hard against her. She didn't know what had come over her girlfriend, but she liked it.
Arizona's hands slide down Callie's back and onto her perfect arse, causing the brunette to let out a little moan into the kiss as she felt the blonde grip her butt cheeks.
Eventually breaking for air Arizona stared into's Callie's big brown eyes and in a slightly out of breath voice said "not that I'm complaining...but what brought that on?" She said smiling broadly, eyes twinkling.
Callie beamed back happily "HSS have offered me a job...and are willing to fund my research project. I'm free of Chief Taylor!" Callie said excitedly
"Really? Oh Callie that's amazing. I'm so proud of you." Arizona said smiling back at the brunette as she gave the brunette a quick peck on the lips . "Tell me everything that happened" she said just as excited at the news as her girlfriend.
The article in Time magazine had bought them some time, but that was running out. Hospital for Special Surgery was the no 1 ranked hospital for orthopaedics and when Arizona had heard that Callie was moving to New York with Penny, she had, wrongly it turned out, assumed she had got a job working there. Callie had been so desperate to move with Penny that she had taken the first job offered and had ended up working under Chief Taylor who clearly didn't recognise her talent.
"I'll tell you everything...but first there's something I really need to do." Callie said raising her eyebrow in a way that only meant one thing as she pulled Arizona into their bedroom and closed the door behind her.
"Callie! What are you doing? Sofia may still be awake" Arizona whispered unable to keep the smile off her face as she saw the determined look on her lover's face.
"Well, you'll just have to be super quiet then won't you!" the brunette responded as she slid her hand down the front of Arizona's leggings and straight into her panties. "God I been thinking of doing this since I heard about the job offer." Callie said softly as she kissed Arizona's neck and nibbled her earlobe.
"Mmmmm" Arizona moaned as she felt Callie's fingers start to rub her clit. "You...ummm…you should get job offers more often!" the blonde joked as she felt a trickle of warm liquid escape her core and soak her panties. Callie had always know how to touch Arizona, how to turn her on in an instant.

She would have loved to have used the strap on, but Sofia was just across the hallway and after Miami she didn't trust Arizona to be quiet. After the third attempt had failed Callie had insisted they call Addison in LA for advice, to make sure they were doing everything right, and to see if there was anything more they could do.
"Listen guys, I know you know this isn't a one size fits all situation and it may take some time. The good thing is Arizona's hormone and egg count all checked out fine, so we've a good chance of this working, I just can't tell you exactly when." Addison said reassuringly down the video camera.
She loved Callie and Arizona dearly and was delighted when she had heard that Arizona had moved to New York. She knew it was only a matter of time before they found their way back together. Some couples are just meant to be. Unfortunately for her, that hadn't been the case with Derek and she had never settled down with anyone long term since.
Addison suggested one more try with the home insemination, and if that didn't work they should switch to IUI which would involve the sperm being directly injected into Arizona's uterus at her most fertile time. This approach would be trickier with their jobs, but Arizona had explained to Herman about the treatment who had, in her own unique way, told her to get over herself, and that the centre could survive without her.
"Thanks so much Addie" Callie said before adding "We know we're super lucky in that we have the finances to cover the treatment, not to mention your support and help" Callie squeezed her girlfriends hand off camera.
Arizona smiled softly at Callie. In her time as a doctor, she had had to deal with some heart-breaking cases of couples losing babies they had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars over many years trying to conceive.
"I'll check in next month and if there is still no joy, then we'll regroup, take stock and move onto the next option." Addison said calmly.
After the call Arizona was watching Callie prepare a salad for their lunch. Sofia was on a play date for a couple of hours and the blonde watched thoughtfully as her girlfriend washed the salad ingredients.
"Remember that night when you came home with some girls number on your hand?" Arizona had asked out the blue.
Callie stopped what she was doing and turned to face her girlfriend as she wiped her wet hands on a tea towel. "You mean the night we broke up, for the first time?" Callie said seriously "of course I remember".
"At the time I was adamant I didn't want kids. I was so sure that I was prepare to lose you, but now...god, now I can't imagine not having Sofia." Arizona said as tears started forming in her eyes.
"Hey" Callie said walking around the counter where Arizona was perched on a stool "are you OK?" The brunette asked as she rubbed Arizona's back starting to worry where this was going.
"It was so many years ago, but I can picture it so clearly. You were wearing that burgundy top with the stripes across the front. Remember?" Arizona asked holding Callie's gaze as she tried to blink the tears away.
"Errr no, not really," Callie admitted "I remember feeling utterly desperate that my desire for a child was the reason we were breaking up."
"Well, it was 50/50 Callie. You could easily say my desire NOT to have a child was the reason we broke up." Arizona replied
"I guess. I just think I felt guilty as everything had been so going well between us and I was the one who had thrown the spanner in the works." Callie responded thoughtfully
"Maybe. Maybe not, I mean it was bound to have come up at some point, and I wouldn't really call a child a spanner!." Arizona said matter-of-factly.
Callie remembered she had tried so hard to ignore the feeling of wanting a family, but it had just been too strong.
"Where's all this coming from babe?" Callie asked looking into Arizona's blue eyes for a sign "are...are you having doubts?" Callie said cautiously
Arizona's pupils visibly grew as her expression changed to shock following Callie's question.
"NO! God no Callie...it's the complete opposite." Arizona said shaking her head at the suggestion. "I just remembered how I felt back then when you came in from work, took off your coat and sat down on the coffee table. I was so confused at the start when you held out your hand and started talking about a hot girl." Arizona gave a small chuckle "I initially thought I was getting dumped for another woman and I had started drawing up my battle plan to win you back, but then you mentioned about not being able to stop wondering if she wanted kids, and well I knew I was in trouble. "
Arizona continued "I was so excited planning a trip to Fuji and then in a matter of moments I was feeling defeated. I felt like I had lost the competition."
"It wasn't a competition Arizona" Callie said softly
"I know. I've never told you this, but I HATED the fact that you wanted a child more than you wanted me...and I know that is totally unfair, because I know you wanted me too. I know you loved me as much as I loved you, but I guess what I'm trying to say...clearly really badly...is that I feel that way now Calliope." Arizona brushed a tear away that had managed to escape from the well.
"I feel that want you had all those years ago."
Callie wrapped her arms around Arizona, pulled her close and held her for a few moments before placing a kiss on the top of her head.
"BUT…." Arizona started speaking pulling back so she could see Callie "….I also really need you to know that if it doesn't work out...then that will OK too...because I have our darling Sophia and I have you."
"I know." Callie said smiling "Another baby would be the icing on top of the cake, but our cake is pretty spectacular as it is."
"It's the best cake EVER!" Arizona said smiling back and leaning in to place a soft kiss on her girlfriend's lips.

So we're still in lockdown in the UK, although there is hope for a couple of months time...including hairdressers opening Wooo Hooo!

Not sure what I would have done with my time over the past year if I hadn't started my first story. I probably should have studied for a Master degree to add to the CV. Not sure I can add wrote three smut stories about Arizona & Callie (lol).
