Chapter 36
J'onn and M'gann quickly left their comrades sides, leaving Kate, Nia, and Lena on their own. The three quickly regrouped and Lena suggested a path through the underground bunker. Hoping there was a control room at the end of it. Silently the raven-haired woman hoped that whatever was launched wasn't being launched remotely. They reached a forked path section of the facility, not far from the large room they'd come from via the Martian way of entering.
"What now? Splitting up doesn't seem like a good idea. Someone could really get lost down here," Nia said.
"Well if it's anything like the other Luthor facilities, bunk room is to the left, storage and vehicles are to the right, and…" she indicated toward the middle path.
"Lead on MacDuff," Kate nodded. The three moved down the middle pathway, not saying much. The further they walked down the hall, the more Nia grew uncomfortable. Something in the back of her head told her she'd seen this before. That's when she stopped in her tracks. Kate quickly realized the woman on her right had stopped moving.
"Earth to Dreamer, come in Dreamer," she teased.
"I've seen this portion of the hallway before…" was all Nia said; bits and pieces of her earlier dream were starting to become clearer. Kate looked at Lena and Lena shrugged. The Gothamite put her hands on Nia's shoulders and moved her to the side of the hallway and Lena quickly came with.
"We're walking into a trap, aren't we?" Kate asked.
"If it turns out like what I saw in my dream… then yes," Nia nodded. Kate nodded back – perhaps the facility wasn't as empty as they thought.
"Any chance there are hidey holes around here somewhere?" The brunette asked Lena.
"I wouldn't put it past Lex building in a few," the Luthor said.
"Anything in your belt of tricks to help us find out?" Nia wondered.
"I'm good but I'm not that good. Let's walk down the middle of the hallway as tightly as possible. Lena, you're in the middle of us since you don't have a weapon," Kate instructed. The three quickly moved back to the center of the hallway and Kate pulled out her collapsible bo-staff. They moved cautiously and all of them wondered just what Kara, J'onn, and M'gann were up to.
Topside, things were almost under control. Kara had quickly double tapped the left cape connection point on her outfit and her helmet had appeared. Now able to actually get near the missile, she tried to change the course of the projectile. J'onn and M'gann joined her; taking over the redirecting portion while she tried to figure out what the bomb was made of.
"No nuclear material! Steer it toward the ocean!" Kara shouted. Quickly the three worked together to get the missile toward the ocean and watched it crash beneath the waves before exploding.
"Where did Lex get all the Kryptonite from?" M'gann asked.
"I have no idea but we'll find out. This was obviously meant to prevent Kal from stopping it, since we're so close to Metropolis. Now that we've redirected it, whoever fired it will definitely know we're here, if they didn't before," Kara said after deactivating her helmet. The three quickly headed back to the base and Kara could hear alarms going off as they got closer.
"We have to hurry!" The blonde had a feeling in the pit of her stomach about her friends. Not bothering to be quiet about it, all three headed back through the hole that Kara had created earlier.
"Looks like there were more people here than we thought," J'onn said as bullets zinged past them from the henchmen firing their weapons down below.
"M'gann, find the ladies. J'onn and I will handle these guys," Kara said.
"You've got it," the White Martian changed her density and disappeared. She tried to reach the three on the comms and found that she got no response to her initial message. Upon reaching the spot that the three had earlier, there were henchmen coming out of the left side tunnel. Knowing that they wouldn't be there, M'gann chose the middle and headed down there.
It wasn't long until she found Kate, Nia, and Lena in hand to hand combat with more of Lex's cronies. Swooping down, she shifted her density again, punching the guy in front of her, who was about to attempt to hit Lena.
"Can't leave you guys alone for five minutes," she teased before punching another guy.
"You know us. It wouldn't be fun unless we weren't kicking some butt," Kate chuckled as she hit a guy upside the head with her staff. Nia knocked out the last one and the four quickly hurried ahead, afraid that maybe Lex or Lillian would be getting away. That's when a very large Lexosuit came into view.
"Holy…" Kate stopped in her tracks. The suit was about twelve feet tall and the ground moved under their feet as it walked. It had a large cannon mounted on the left arm and a large mechanical hand on the right. The clear cockpit lid revealed who was in it.
"I don't know how you found me but this time we'll make our parting permanent," Lex sneered.
