Chapter 37
Kara and J'onn continued to fight the seemingly never-ending stream of bad guys coming out of the tunnel. The blonde began to wonder if they were basically just trying to distract the two from joining their friends. Abandoning the fight and trying to find the others, would only corner everyone in, so that was not an option.
"These guys ate their Wheaties the morning, didn't they?" J'onn cracked a joke before punching a guy in front of him and knocking him down.
"Definitely seems they are a little spryer than they should be," Kara agreed using her heat vision to make four of the men duck behind the nearest cover. Resistance had been expected but J'onn was right, their enemies seemed a little less fearless of the two heroes than usual. Suddenly the enemies' bullets were aimed above their heads and they heard,
"You said you would call,"
"Well things kind of escalated in a hurry," Kara admitted as her cousin landed next to her.
"Where are the rest of the Superfriends?" He wanted to know. To an outsider it would look very strange to see the two of them holding a conversation in the middle of a hail of gunfire as the bullets bounced off of them.
"They're trying to find Lex and Lillian," she told him.
"Go. J'onn and I got these guys. We'll join you as soon as we can," Superman smiled. Kara quickly shot into the air and headed toward the tunnels the men with guns kept coming out of. A large explosion coming from the area she was heading made her nervous and she pressed herself to go even faster.
"We're sitting ducks in this hallway!" Kate shouted as she attempted to send an exploding batarang at the Lexosuit. It landed and exploded but didn't seem to have much effect. There was no way for them to know that the suit was made of Nth metal. The Thanagarian material had been used to imprison Kara and Mon-El when they were fighting Project Cadmus and Brainy's Legion ring was made out of it. The Coluan had once stated it was the strongest element in the existence of the universe.
That's when they saw two blue beams of energy shoot toward the suit. They hit their mark and the Lexosuit seemed to be a little more affected, but it didn't last long. Immediately the blonde grew concerned. She quickly dove at the suit and pounded it into the wall, to the right of the door it had come out of. The blonde's hands began to throb and then she knew they were in trouble. The Lexosuit was made of something much stronger than the smaller ones.
"Find Lillian! This guy is mine!" Kara shouted, backing slightly off of the suit, trying to discretely check the function of her hands. Kate did not want to leave Kara alone with the elder Luthor sibling but there was another part of the mission to complete. Kate, Nia, and Lena took off looking for Lillian at the end of the tunnel. M'gann, however, refused to leave Kara's side.
"You think you can beat me? In this suit?!" Lex crowed as he took a swing at the blonde. She ducked and tried to laser the glass keeping the Luthor enclosed in the suit. There were cracks beginning to show in the clear compartment and that gave her hope. Removing Lex from the suit was probably their best bet.
"I can beat you every day of the week!" It was taunting, which Kara knew would get Lex's dander up. He aimed the cannon on the arm of the suit at her and fired. It spewed a glowing green shell and M'gann knocked Kara out of the way. It would seem that Lex had also stuffed his new machine full of Kryptonite, which his new toy was able to shield for a nasty hidden surprise. Quickly reactivating her helmet, Kara was able to breathe. This upset Lex even more. He charged at them, and despite the weight of the suit, leapt off the ground, remaining airborne for what seemed like a long time. It was then that Kara realized what the suit must be made of and what had to be done to try and destroy it.
"Push up!" The blonde yelled and she and M'gann caught the suit in midair. They began pushing it toward the roof of the tunnel. Lex tried to aim his cannon, but they were too close, and he couldn't get a shot off, without possibly hitting the suit. So, he swung the mechanical arm and it hit Kara in the side. Cursing in Kryptonian, she continued to push until the two ladies had broken the suit through the roof of the tunnel and through the dirt. There was only one metal that would have survived that kind of attack – Nth metal and Kara's tactic proved it.
"Keep pushing!" Kara told M'gann. Again, Lex took a swing at her and the blonde took the hit. The pain was starting to really get to her, but she ignored it as she blasted the glass to the compartment with her heat vision. More cracks began to show and M'gann punched it, breaking it open. Grabbing Lex by his shoulders, as Kara continued to push them higher and higher into the sky, M'gann shifted her density and by touch, Lex's. He came out of the suit and Kara stopped pushing.
"I've got him," M'gann said, shifting back to a solid form, away from the suit. Kara just moved out of the way and the suit began to tumble toward the ground. That's when M'gann noticed blood in the corner of Kara's mouth.
"My suit!" Lex was very upset as the suit cratered the soil and fell into hundreds of little pieces, ripping open another hole in the roof of the subterranean facility.
"Where is Lillian?" Kara asked, the sun was now gone, and her regenerating powers were not working.
"I can drop you from here," M'gann said when Lex hesitated.
"You would not, you're too much of a goody-two shoes," he said.
"You're right. Maybe we should turn him over to Lena," Kara smirked. She was feeling terrible but tried not to show it. Without M'gann's help, she would not have been able to defeat Lex's suit on her own.
"I think I'll take it from here," Superman arrived at their side.
"Make sure he doesn't have any toys on him. He escaped the prison back home with some sort of concrete cutting device," Kara explained.
"Oh, I think the Metropolis PD will check every cavity," her cousin smirked and took off with their captive.
"Are you ok?" M'gann asked.
"It had to be Nth metal. You see the hole it left?" Kara deflected.
"Indeed, it did but you didn't answer me," the White Martian pointed out. That's when they heard another explosion down below. Lillian was still down there and there was a good chance that she was getting help from Andrea.
"Come on!" Kara headed off and M'gann quickly followed despite her concern. If Lex had used Nth metal to build that monstrosity, there was little doubt that Lillian would have concocted something that could be used against them as well.
