"Hey Zuko, do you have a minute?" Aang asked. Zuko looked up with surprise. This was a rare day he was sitting at the beach relaxing in the shade. He covered his legs as if poised for a nap.
"Yeah, sure Aang what's up?" he said offering a seat to his left and adjusting his blanket. Aang sat down on the sand and watched the ocean waves as he tried to collect his thoughts. Zuko waited patiently knowing that Aang would speak eventually.
"Are you and Katara, OK?" he asked softly.
"What do you mean Aang?" Zuko asked warily. Aang smiled at his friend's concern.
"I mean are you two Ok, as friends? I saw how Katara hit you the other day and you just sorta laughed it off. You whispered something then walked away angry. I thought things were better between you." He said sadly. Aang saw that? Zuko's mind was whirling. Wait. He thought they were fighting…. What were those monks teaching that boy? Zuko chuckled,
"Aang, I can assure you that Katara and I are good. We're just exploring our friendship to see where it goes. When she hit me, she was being affectionate," He explained carefully. Aang was confused. He didn't like the thought of Katara hitting Zuko's butt to show affection. It reminded him of an uncomfortable conversation with Toph about girlfriends and boyfriends.
"Well, if Katara was being affectionate, how come she doesn't hit my butt or Sokka's?" Aang asked. Oh, Gods.
"Uh, because honestly, Aang, she doesn't have that kind of relationship with you… being the Avatar and all, and uh, and if she did it to Sokka that would be both weird and um, questionable. So... yeah. That—that's why." Zuko explained clearing his throat afterward. Aang considered his words carefully and nodded.
"That makes a lot of sense Zuko. Well, I'm glad things are fine. Keep up the good work," he said with an authoritative voice. Zuko resisted the urge to laugh and said,
"Yeah, um thank you for your concern. Good talk…" He choked slightly and smiled. Aang smiled brightly and stood. "Yeah, it was. I feel like I'm getting better at this Avatar stuff. See you later Zuko!" he said as he took off on his glider. When Aang was gone, Zuko moved the blanket.
"Oh, My Gods! Somebody needs to have "the talk" with that boy right now," Zuko said. Katara sat up laughing and pressing her hands to her face.
"I know, he needs parents, but I think you explained things pretty well." She sighed walking her fingers up his arm. Zuko grabbed Katara by her waist pulling her into his lap and gave her a kiss.
"What is he going to do when he finally understands we really like each other?" he asked. Katara kissed his nose.
"I don't know, babe…" she said quietly.
