Chapter Thirty Six:
As Harry took up his place on the dance floor to open the ball he felt a wave of nervousness coupled with excitement "don't pay attention to anyone else" Daphne said calmly "just focus on me and you'll be less worried".
Harry smiled at her, got himself positioned for the waltz and waited for the music to queue up.
A few minutes late as he swept Daphne across the floor Harry wondered just what he'd been so worried about. The dancing lessons had helped immensely and Daphne seemed to be having the time of her life.
After some time the music changed and there was some more informal dancing. Harry and Daphne danced for awhile longer before heading over to their table and sitting down.
Harry left to get them each a drink while Daphne got them some food and they soon met back at their table laden with drink and food.
As Harry and Daphne, ate, drank and talked Harry's eyes would occasionally sweep over the hall. At this particular moment he could see Fred, George, Lee Jordan and Hagrid all dancing with their dates and was amazed to see that Hagrids date was none other than Madame Maxime. The two seemed to be lost in their own private world and Harry smiled, glad to see his friend happy.
His eyes next fell on Dean Thomas and Ginny. They were snogging and dancing at the same time and Harry grinned knowing Ron would be fuming if he'd seen it.
Speaking of Ron, Harry saw him attempting to dance with Astoria only to keep stepping on her feet. His eyes caught Professor Moody tapping his feet while sitting down and seemingly enjoying himself before taking a swig from his hip flask.
And finally, he saw Neville dancing with Lauren. The two were locked together tightly and seemed to be enjoying each others company. Lauren caught his eye as did Neville and he raised a glass to them in salute. They waved back.
"This has been lovely tonight Harry" Daphne said as she cuddled into him after they had danced some more".
"Yeah it has" Harry replied, kissing her.
Someone thumped down in a seat next to them and Harry groaned as he turned to find Ron looking sour faced "Astoria's gone off with some other bloke" he said by way of explanation for his presence at the table.
Harry stared over at the dance floor and caught sight of Astoria and Justin Finch-Fletchley dancing together, though he was sure it was the sight next to them that had brought Ron over to their table for Hermione was dancing closely together with Victor Krum and there was a huge smile on her face.
"What's he got that I haven't got?" Ron mumbled as he downed a butter beer.
"Who, Justin?" Harry asked though in truth he knew who Ron meant.
"No!" Ron snapped "Mr Perfect Victor Krum of course!".
"Ron what did I tell you about making sure Astoria had a good time?" Harry's voice held a note of warning that, thankfully, his best friend picked up on.
"I did" Ron said defensively. He looked embarrassed "after two hours of dancing she said I was no good at it. That I kept stepping on her toes and I was still trying to think what to say when Justin cut in and they went off together".
Daphne sighed "I'm sorry Ron. I didn't know she'd do that to you".
Ron shrugged "It's fine" he said glumly as he rested his head on his hands on top of the table "so...how have you two been doing?".
The three of them talked for some time before Harry saw Hermione strolling over. She was blushing and looked very happy. Harry was glad that his friend was having a good time but at the same time he wanted to avoid an argument between his friends that would ruin the atmosphere.
Sadly, there was nothing he could do as Hermione flopped down into one of the empty chairs and waved a menu over here face to signify that it was warm.
"Hot in here isn't it" she said somewhat breathlessly and then added "Victor's just gone to get us some drinks. How have you all been?".
"We're absolutely fine" Ron said sullenly before Harry or Daphne could say anything "we've been having a great time and not missing you".
Hermione looked gobsmacked and stared at Ron in disbelief. She must have realised what was behind Ron's words and the way he was acting for she stood up and said "it's your fault you know".
"I...what?" Ron was nonplussed "what's my fault?" he demanded.
"Your jealousy over Victor Krum taking me to the ball" she said simply.
"I'm not jealous" Ron countered defensively "I just don't want to hear how loved up you are with old duck feet!".
"Ha, not jealous? that's a good one" Hermione snorted humourlessly "all the time you were dancing with Astoria you were staring at me".
"I wasn't" Ron denied but Hermione wasn't finished as she got louder and more angry "if you're that upset about me going to the ball with someone else then you know the solution don't you!" she shouted.
"Oh yeah and what's that?!" Ron yelled back.
"Ask me before someone else does you idiot!" Hermione burst into tears and made her way back through the crowd.
Harry groaned feeling that the atmosphere of the evening had been ruined. He turned to his girlfriend "Daph, I'd better take the idiot here out to cool off. It might take some time so...will you wait for me to say goodnight?".
Daphne nodded her understanding and smiled "of course I will love. I'll see you in a bit". They kissed and Harry stood up, dragging Ron towards the doors.
"Oi get off me!" Ron protested.
When they reached the Entrance Hall Harry rounded on Ron. He made sure not to have a go but simply said "Ron, lets go outside so you can calm down. You're all wound up".
Ron looked irritated at Harry but nodded his agreement and the two of them wound their way past snogging couples and outside into the fresh, freezing cold night air.
The pair of them walked through the grounds past several bushes and hedges before they came to a bench. They were just about to sit down when Harry heard a familiar voice "I thought it might be better to talk out here, away from prying eyes like". The large figure of Hagrid appeared not far way accompanied by the even taller figure of Madame Maxime.
The couple stopped near the bench and seemed focused only on each other "what happened to yours?" Hagrid asked "my mother left when I was a baby, not the maternal sort see".
Hagrid looked up at Madame Maxime "was it your father...or was it your mother?".
Madame Maxime looked confused and replied "was what my father or mother?".
"Well...you know..." Hagrid tailed off "where you get your half-giant heritage from".
Madame Maxime did not respond for a few moments. She seemed in shock. Soon her facial features hardened "I am NOT a half-giant" she insisted, sounding furious at the very idea "I don't know where you got the idea from".
"Well, you're so tall. I just assumed that...I mean..." Hagrid fell silent.
"I can assure you that I most certainly am not a half-giant and that my parents were just extremely tall people".
"Who's she trying to kid" Ron whispered next to him having been broken out of his sullen mood "if Hagrids a half-giant then she definitely is".
Harry nodded though he didn't speak. Hagrid continued to speak "you don't have to lie. It's alright. I mean I know it's not easy telling people you're a half-giant and...".
"This conversation is over" Madame Maxime stated coldly "I do not wish to discuss it any more. I am going back to my carriage quarters". Without even the courtesy of a goodbye Madame Maxime swept away leaving a devastated Hagrid on his own.
The half-giant looked towards where Harry and Ron were standing forcing the two of them to duck into one of the bushes. Hagrid sighed, wiped away a tear and shuffled off down the path looking thoroughly miserable.
"Why did we have to hear all that?" Harry groaned "I won't be able to look Hagrid in the face for weeks now. If he finds out we were here he'll think we were eavesdropping.
The two of them were just stepping out of the hedge when they heard the sound of wand being waved and the cold voice of Professor Snape assailed their ears "out of the hedge you miscreants and layabouts" he said. They heard the wand continue to be flicked and shouts of indignation of outraged came to their ears as they saw couples stumbling out of the hedges and bushes that lined the path and the cold professor took points away or assigned detentions.
Harry and Ron stepped out of the bushes while Professor Snape was busy and were already standing on the path when he reached them "and just what are you two doing out here at this time of night?" he said coldly and suspiciously.
"We were just getting some fresh air Professor" Harry assured the sour faced potions master "we're heading back inside now".
Professor Snape stared at them both for a long time before narrowing his eyes "see that you do Potter" he said and moved off along the path continuing to dislodge couples from their hiding places.
"Git" Harry heard Ron mutter as they walked away. He nodded and whispered "yeah he is".
When the two of them reached the Entrance Hall Harry saw Daphne waiting for them and checked his watch realising that it was half past eleven.
"Hey love" Daphne greeted him with a kiss while Ron stepped back. "Did you manage to calm him down?" she whispered, indicating Ron who was looking everywhere but at them and whistling to maintain nonchalance.
Harry nodded "yeah I did. He soon calmed down once we were outside, the cold air will do that". He looked around conspiratorially but found no one else next to them "we heard Hagrid talking with Madam Maxime" he told her.
Daphne's eyes widened at the significance in his words "what, about the...the...".
Harry nodded "about the whole being a half-giant thing".
"What happened?" Daphne asked.
Harry sighed "sadly, she refused to admit to being a half-giant and told him the conversation was over, she then walked away".
"Poor Hagrid" Daphne said sympathetically "he bares his soul and gets treated like that" she snorted "that woman's full of herself anyway, Hagrids better off".
Harry nodded "yeah she is". He kissed Daphne "well, night love, hope you had a good Christmas and Yule Ball".
"I had the best time ever" Daphne replied with a smile "I only wish I could escort you up to your common room" she winked.
Harry chuckled and replied jokingly "now Miss Greengrass you know I'm not that sort of boy". She laughed as he continued a bit more seriously "so do I though but I think I'd better get Ron over there..." he gestured to his best friend "upstairs before Hermione see's him and they have another row".
Daphne shook her head at the absurdity of it all "why can't those two just admit their feelings for one another?".
Harry shrugged "I don't think either of them are emotionally capable of that yet". He hugged her "see you tomorrow love".
The two parted ways as Harry called to Ron and the two boys headed up the stairs "and just where have you two been?" demanded a sharp and emotional voice.
Neither of them had the chance to respond for Hermione declared "never mind, off to bed, both of you!". Harry was about to point out that she wasn't their mother but he got the feeling that this comment would not have gone down very well and so he pulled Ron past Hermione said "goodnight Hermione". She nodded but didn't reply.
"Mental that one" Ron muttered as they got past her. Harry groaned as the inevitable backlash resulted "what did you just say to me Ronald Weasley?!" Hermione shrieked and the two boys fled up the stairs.
As Harry looked back he saw her crying and shook his head.
The pair were already settled down in bed when Seamus arrived in the dorm room ten minutes later "hey Seamus, had a good time?" Harry asked him. Ron had pulled his hangings shut and seemed to be blocking everything out.
"It was good thanks" the Irish wizard answered "but I think we're better off as just occasional friends". Seamus shook his head "do you know, she doesn't even like Quidditch?". Harry smiled "yeah I know" he replied.
Seamus shook his head at the seeming madness of it all and, grabbing his pyjamas, he headed for the bathroom.
A few minutes later, Dean walked in grinning from ear to ear. Clearly he'd had a good evening "alright Dean? good date?" Harry asked him while feeling glad that Ron's hangings were shut.
Dean nodded grinned wider "yeah. Ginny just really seems to get me, you know?" Harry nodded as Dean continued "she's asked me to take her on a second date so we're going to Hogsmeade together on the next visit".
Harry smiled "I'm happy for you guys". Dean headed over to his bed to get ready for bed.
Midnight rolled around and Harry was just about nodding off to sleep when a stunned but smiling Neville approached his bed "alright Harry?" he asked.
Harry nodded as he took in Neville's appearance. "your cousin is amazing" Neville said. Harry's stomach tightened up and he hoped they hadn't...well...hadn't done anything too extreme.
"She's an amazing dancer, she's really funny and we have so much in common" Neville said happily "I asked her if she'd let me take her on a second date and she agreed, so we're going for a picnic tomorrow, it being Boxing Day and all" he smiled more "she even gave me a kiss on the cheek!".
He seemed so happy that Harry couldn't help but smile too. He was certain that Lauren and Neville would last as a couple and he was glad for them, they deserved to be happy together.
The rest of December came and went. The school celebrated the new year in style with a New Years Eve party with fireworks and an all you can eat buffet containing vast quantities of food and drink.
It was now the third week of January and though the second task was still some time off, Harry was getting increasingly nervous for despite the help from his friends, he had yet to manage to open the egg and hear what the clue was and without the clue he knew he'd have no proper way to plan for the second task.
It was a Wednesday afternoon, the eighteenth of January and Harry, Ron and Neville were just heading to the Great Hall for lunch when Cedric Diggory, Harry's fellow Champion, approached them as they reached the hall doors and said "can I talk to you for a moment Harry?".
He gestured that they should walk away from the others. "It's alright" said Harry "they're good. We can talk in front of them".
Cedric seemed to be think it over and then he nodded "ok" he replied. The Hufflepuff looked around to make sure that no one else was nearby. Clearly what he had to say was important and secret.
"Have you figured out the egg clue yet?" he asked Harry.
Harry frowned, thinking this an odd thing to be asking given they were opponents and, just as Cedric had been months before, Harry was suspicious "why do you want to know?" he asked guardedly.
Cedric grinned "suspicious just like I was eh?". The older boy shook his head "don't worry, I'm not going to ask how you did or anything, I've already done it".
Harry gaped in surprise "you...you have?" he said feeling amazed.
"Yep" Cedric confirmed "and I have some advice for you" he once again looked from left to right, ahead of Harry and behind himself before continuing "take the egg and have a bath".
Harry frowned deeper "what?" he asked, not sure he'd heard right.
"Take the egg and have a bath" Cedric repeated "it opens under water".
Suddenly, it all made sense to Harry. The screeching sound the egg made when opened, the distant sound of voices. All of it. He felt like a complete idiot.
"Use the prefects bathroom on the fifth floor" Cedric said "the password is pine fresh". The older boy grinned "take the egg, have a bath and place it in the water".
He began to walk away "got to go now, want to make sure I meet Cho outside History of Magic".
"Cedric!" Harry called after him. The older boy paused and turned "thanks!" Harry called out.
Cedric grinned "not a problem!" he waved and disappeared out of sight.
"What was all that about?" Neville asked him as the four of them entered the Great Hall.
Harry grinned "Cedric was repaying the favour for telling him about the dragons. He let me know how to open my egg and told me I could use the prefects bathroom, he even gave me the password".
"Bloody hell!" Ron breathed and followed it up with "don't do it Harry, it could be a trap!".
"Oh don't be so silly Ron" Hermione said irritably. She still had not fully forgiven Ron for his behaviour the night of the the Yule Ball "why would Cedric want to do that?".
"Well...they are opponents...aren't they" Ron replied as if it should be obvious.
"You can relax Ron" Harry grinned "I somehow don't think that if Cedric was going to lay a trap for me he'd suggest I use the prefects bathroom, he has no way of knowing I'll take up his offer". Harry laughed "and anyway he's clearly helping me as I told him about the dragons".
That night, near midnight, Harry said "see you in a bit" to Ron, Neville, Ginny, Hermione and Lauren, threw on his his invisibility cloak and with the egg in hand he headed out of the portrait hole making his way down to the fifth floor.
Harry found the prefects bathroom easily enough and knocked loudly on the door. When there was no answer to his three knocks, feeling satisfied it was empty, he turned the handle, pushed the door open and walked in.
Once inside, he got to work quickly as he walked over to the long, wide and deep marble tiled bathtub in the room's centre. Taking off the invisibility cloak he also set the egg down and examined the taps. He was intrigued to find that, aside from the taps that provided hot and cold water, there were settings to create bubbles of every known colour and kind.
Indulging himself for a change, Harry turned on all of the taps and watched in fascination as the water poured in followed by the bubbles changing the colour to a foamy greenish-blue colour.
Once the bathtub was full, Harry stripped off, grabbed one of the towels and set it down next to them and slipped gingerly into the tub, ready to get out immediately if the water proved too hot.
As luck would have it, the water proved to be just how Harry liked it and so he slipped in and sank down into the tub enjoying the warmth of the water and the feel of the bubbles.
Perhaps Harry should have tried to open the egg right away but his inner child came out in that moment and he began to thrown the bubbles about and blow on them. He kicked his legs about and began to do laps of the tub enjoying the fact that it was the same size as a swimming pool.
After some fifteen minutes Harry shook himself mentally 'you've got to get the egg open' he chastised himself as he reached over for the egg.
As with each time before, Harry twisted the top of the egg and it opened causing the usual loud and abrasive screeching sound with only the faint sound of voices.
Harry bit his lip as he turned the egg over in his hands pondering what to do. He thought more on Cedric's advice on sticking the egg in the water and decided then and there to follow it.
Grasping the egg firmly, Harry held it under the water, twisted the top opened it. It seemed that Cedric's advice had worked...somewhat, for the egg was no longer making a screeching sound but instead there was a faint sound of music coming from it and a far away voice though he couldn't make either out properly.
Sighing and thinking the whole thing to be quite mad, Harry plunged under the water himself and found that he could hear the music and the voice quite clearly. The music was soft and gentle, very soothing. The voices, for he now realised it was more than one, were singing and their words puzzled him as they sang:
"Come seek us where our voices sound,
We cannot sing above the ground,
And while you're searching ponder this;
We've taken what you'll sorely miss,
An hour long you'll have to look,
And to recover what we took,
But past an hour the prospect's black,
Too late, it's gone, it won't come back."
Harry listened to the clue a few more times in the hope that it would make more sense but sadly it all just seemed a jumble of words to him. He was, however, chilled by the final part of the clue and hoped sincerely that it meant an object rather than a person.
Harry climbed up out of the bathtub carrying the egg and set it down next to his clothes. He dried himself off with the towel and changed back into his clothes. After wiping the egg dry he threw the invisibility cloak back over himself and headed out of the prefects bathroom and back to Gryffindor Tower where he hoped the others might be waiting for him.
Sure enough, as he re-entered Gryffindor Tower, Harry spotted his friends and cousin sitting together in a corner of the common room. Neville and Hermione were chatting about something while Ginny engaged Ron in a game of chess and Lauren cheered her best friend on.
"Harry threw off the cloak and Ron, who was facing the portrait hole, jumped in surprising causing the chess pieces to scatter everywhere.
"I was winning that time!" Ginny grumbled as she picked up the pieces "why'd you jump for? it's only Harry".
Ron turned as red as his hair in embarrassment as Harry crossed the room carrying cloak and egg and set them down on one of the sofa's.
"So, did you manage to hear the egg clue?" Hermione asked excitably.
It seemed everyone else was just as keen to hear. Harry dragged things out for a short time by staying silent before he replied "yes. I managed to open it underwater and hear the clue. Though I don't understand what the words mean".
"Then there's only one thing for it" state Hermione sounding as practical as ever. She stared intently at Harry "can you remember the clue?".
Harry nodded and, seeing where she was going with this, he said "can someone fetch me some parchment, ink and a quill?".
"I'll go" Ron volunteered and raced towards the stairs leading up to the fourth years boys dormitory.
Ron soon returned bearing quill, ink and parchment. Harry, took them over to one of the tables and, watched over by the others, he wrote down the egg clue, word for word, exactly right.
Once he was done he stared at it before handing it to Hermione. She nodded "it's too late to analyse it now. I suggest we head to the library after dinner with Daphne, Millicent and Astoria, they might be able to help, especially Daphne".
Harry nodded "sounds like a plan". He turned to the others "sound good guys?" he asked. They all agreed the idea was sound and so it was settled.
Thursday night, the nineteenth of January rolled around very slowly and Harry was tense all day. When evening finally arrived, he sped through his meal almost choking on a dumpling in his haste, causing Neville and Ron to have to thump him on the back hard.
Once everyone was done with their dinner the large group headed to the library together. When they entered they received stern looks from the vulture like Librarian Madam Pince who eyed them suspiciously as they entered.
They headed over to an empty group of tables and pushed two of them together. Madam Pince looked annoyed but said nothing as the group sat down and Harry took out the parchment, a bottle of ink and a quill.
They all crowded round the parchment as Harry explained to Daphne, Astoria and Millicent that the words were the egg clue. The three of them nodded and immediately Daphne suggested writing out each line separately in order to make the clue easier to decipher. Harry did so and smiled approvingly.
Thereafter, the group spent the next three hours examining the clue line by line. By ten minutes to ten and curfew, they had managed to establish that Harry had to seek some sort of person or creature who could not sing above the ground. Below ground was ruled out since only vampires slept in earth and it was unlikely they'd be part of the next task.
In the end they agreed that "We cannot sing above the ground" must mean they lived in water and as the only water outside of the castle was the Black Lake it was decided that it meant the task would take place in the lake or at least near it and this was where they must live or at least be when the task was happening.
They had also managed to work out the second line "And while you're searching ponder this; We've taken what you'll sorely miss".
This line had taken less time for it was clear to everyone that "what you'll sorely miss" meant that something or someone would be taken that Harry was miss greatly. This line caused Harry to look over at Ron, Daphne and Lauren and he pondered for he was certain that one of them would be taken. I mean, he loved his broomstick, but a broomstick couldn't compare to a best friend, a girlfriend or a cousin who was more like a sister.
The other lines however had caused them more problems and they had decided to return the next night.
The following night rolled around and as the group assembled in the library to finish off the deciphering of the clue, Harry was still pondering who would be chosen as "what you'll sorely miss".
The group worked hard from seven until nine thirty and managed to finish the deciphering of the clue.
It was decided by them that "An hour long you'll have to look, And to recover what we took" meant, obviously, that Harry would have to search for an hour to save the thing or person that was taken from him.
This, of course, had raised new questions, which were put on hold and centred around just how Harry would be able to survive in the waters of the Black Lake for an hour or even just under an hour without drowning.
The final piece of the clue which they deciphered was the most chilling of all to Harry as it declared that past an hour Harry would not be able to get back what he had lost "but surely they can't do that!" Ron had burst out "they can't leave PEOPLE down there to die if the Champion fails!".
"I don't expect that's what it means Ron" Hermione replied patiently.
"It's obviously just a way to make the Champions hurry up with the task Daphne added confidently. Hermione nodded in agreement.
"So somehow, I have to find a way to survive underwater for just under an hour in order to recover what will be taken from me" Harry pondered the problem but could find no solution.
No one else could find a solution that night either and it wasn't until the Saturday morning the twenty first of January that a solution presented itself as Neville approached Harry in the common room while Harry was working on an extremely tough transfiguration paper for Professor McGonagall.
"Gillyweed" was the first word that his friend said. This word caused Hermione, Ron, Ginny and Lauren to also look up from what they were doing and stare at Neville as if he'd gone mad.
"I'm sorry Nev?". Harry was puzzled at his friend blurting out a random word like it was meant to mean something.
"Gillyweed" Neville repeated. Harry shrugged helplessly and exchanged a look with Ron who was just as confused.
"It's a plant used in herbology and potions" Neville explained.
"And the significance of that is?" Harry prompted still not seeing where his friend was going with this.
Neville sighed as Hermione said "Neville, may I?".
Neville nodded as Hermione took over "gillyweed is a plant that grows underwater and is used to temporarily give a person gills, flippers and other fish like features that enable them to survive underwater".
Harry's eyes widened "ah, so...".
"Yes!" Neville said excitedly "you could use it to survive in the Black Lake! it would even help you to move through the water faster and get to your person or object within the time!".
"That sounds like an ideal plant Nev" Harry was all for using this plant if it could help.
"There are two downsides though" Neville informed them all.
Harry groaned "go on".
"It's quite rare and only a potions master or apothecary would have access to a supply of it" Neville told him apologetically.
Harry put his face in his hands and muttered "and let me guess, it's not something Snape would keep in the students store cupboard".
Neville nodded "students would never use this stuff for a potion".
Harry's mind clicked into gear "wait Nev, did you see an apothecary would sell it?".
Neville nodded "as I said, it's quite rare but an apothecary might have it in stock. But we don't have a Hogsmeade visit coming up".
Harry grinned "no need for a Hogsmeade trip Nev. It just so happens I have a friendly house elf working here who said he owes me one for freeing him".
"You mean...Dobby?" Ron exclaimed.
"That's right, Dobby can help" Harry grinned and then jumped as a loud pop sounded and Harry found himself face to face with said house elf who was smiling widely "the great and noble Harry Potter calls for Dobby Sir?".
Harry was embarrassed "well, yes I did Dobby, but please don't call me great and noble or Sir, it's just Harry, alright?".
Dobby nodded and Harry continued "if you're willing to help Dobby, there is a problem we need solving".
"Oh anything! anything for Harry Potter!" Dobby jumped up and down sounding glad to help.
"See the thing is Dobby, we need a rare plant called gillyweed" Harry told the elf.
Dobby nodded "Dobby has heard of it Sir".
"Yeah, well, it can only be obtained from either a potions master or an apothecary so, would you mind getting the key to my personal vault from my trunk, taking it to Diagon Alley and withdrawing some money to buy some?".
Harry added "I'll write you a letter of permission". But Dobby was shaking his head apologetically.
"Sorry Harry Potter" the elf replied "I cannot do so unless I is your elf".
'This is a problem' thought Harry. An idea went off in his head "would you like to be my elf Dobby?". Hermione seemed about to protest but Dobby looked overjoyed.
"You'll be given a wage and you'll at the cottage unless I need you" Harry informed the elf.
"I'd love to Master Potter but...I is contracted to Albus Dumbledore and I is not knowing what he will say if I ask to change my master".
"Well ask him and let us know, eh Dobby?" Harry said kindly.
"I will!" and with that Dobby vanished.
"I guess all we can do now, is wait" Harry said simply.
