A/N: I decided to do a double update to get back into the swing of things. Anyway on with the story. The formatting glitch seems to have cleared up now.

Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter or Godzilla. I only own my original ideas.

Chapter 39: Dementors

Soon enough, it was time to head off to Hogwarts once more. Harry Flooed to the station with his trunk, and boarded the train. Harry looked around for a compartment, and eventually found one which had a man sleeping in it. According to the name on his trunk, he was Professor R. J. Lupin. Given the pattern of the past two years, this man was likely the new DADA teacher. One whiff of this man's scent told Harry one additional thing: Lupin was a werewolf. This didn't bother Harry. After all, Lupin was perfectly safe to be around expect for one day per month. On top of that, Harry knew he could be far more dangerous if he chose to be. Harry took a seat across Lupin, and waited for his friends to join him. As he observed Lupin, he couldn't shake the feeling that he'd seen him somewhere before. Soon enough the others arrived, and not long after the train was underway.

Harry's friends discussed what they did over the summer as the train rolled along and the weather soon turned stormy. While rainy weather was nothing unusual, something about the suddenness of this storm put Harry on edge. Out of nowhere, the train jolted as the driver slammed on the brakes.

"What going on?" said Neville, "do you think we've broken down?"

"No, this is something far worse," said Harry.

Harry noticed that ice was beginning to build up on the windows, and saw something moving outside. Suddenly he felt on edge. Some parts of him felt a strange sense of fear, while other part pushed back against this, urging him to fight whatever was coming. Something drifted through the corridor outside, and stopped outside the compartment. The door slid open, revealing a strange shade. The multiple different thoughts streaming through Harry mind each grew in intensity. Everything about this creature screamed of abject wrongness. Harry focused carefully, and the intensity of negative emotions this creature drew forth risked causing him to lose control. The strange hooded creature stared at him, though it had no visible eyes. It seemed confused by him, but progressed nonetheless. Harry could feel this creature attempting to dredge through his memories, searching for something it could use. Harry worked to push it away, but there was only so much he could do.

At this moment, Lupin woke up, and swiftly drew his wand.

"None of us are hiding You-Know-You under our robes," said Lupin, "Leave now, or I shall be forced to use other methods".

The creature show little signs of reaction to Lupin's statement.

"Very well then," said Lupin, "Expecto Patronum!"

A silvery light shot from Lupin's wand, twisting into the shape of a wolf. The wolf flew at the shadowy creature, and drove it back.

As the magical construct faded, Lupin turned to speak with them.

"Is everyone alright?" He asked.

"I think so, sir," said Hermione, answered by the nods of everyone else in the compartment, "What was that thing?"

"A Dementor," said Lupin, "A particularly nasty creature used to guard the prison of Azkaban. I knew they might be wandering around because of the prison break, but not here on the train. If you'll excuse me, I should speak to the conductor and see if we can be underway again soon".

Lupin left the compartment, and started heading up the train. Along the way, he worked on processing the strange set of feeling he'd had in the compartment. Normally, unless someone acted to rile it up, the werewolf part of his mind remained quiet when it wasn't its time to be out. However that changed today. Lupin had learned to understand the werewolf's 'words' were more in the terms of general approximations of feelings. When the young man who looked so much like James entered the compartment, the werewolf was happy, saying roughly 'pack-cub? Smells like big predator. Protect-yes'.

However, when the dementor attacked, the 'words' from it changed, saying 'Threat to pack-cub? Pack-cub strong-power-alpha? Wait-see'.

Lupin wasn't quite sure what it meant, but he managed to glean that the werewolf portion of him was… afraid? No, more like it was ready to submit to a pack Alpha. That in mind, Lupin could feel the power, barely contained, rolling off of Harry. He wondered what the son of his best friend might be hiding. Could Harry be a werewolf too? No that wouldn't fit: if he was, the werewolf part of him would recognize the scent of a fellow lycanthrope.

Lupin reached the front, where the engineer was wiping his brow in relief at the fact that the dementors had finished their sweep. He gradually opened the throttle, and the train jolted slightly as it got underway once more. His planned task now complete, he made his way back down the train, checking on various students and instructing the Prefects of how to help others who may have been badly affected by the dementor's passage. He eventually made it back to his compartment, and looked over the students there. His eyes fell on Harry once more, and his werewolf side stayed low, knowing it wasn't the strongest predator here, and these humans were under this other's protection. Remus reached into his pocket, and pulled out a large chocolate bar.

"Here," said Remus, "each of you should have some chocolate. Believe it or not, it's one of the best treatments for Dementor exposure".

Each of the students took a piece and ate it, soon looking better. Before long, the familiar spires of Hogwarts castle appeared over the horizon, and this eventful journey was nearly at an end.

The Students of Hogwarts made their way into the great hall, separating to head to their respective tables. Harry looked up at the head table observing the professors. Lupin had taken his seat, and Harry also noticed that one person, Professor Kettleburn, he believed, was absent, and Hagrid was now occupying that seat. After the Sorting, Dumbledore stood to give his beginning of term announcements.

"Welcome students, new and returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," said Dumbledore from behind his emotional mask, "I would also like to welcome the newest members for our faculty: Rubeus Hagrid, who will be teaching Care of Magical Creature, as well as Remus Lupin, our newest Defense Against the Dark Art Professor. Additionally, as I am sure you've noticed, Hogwarts is currently play host to a contingent of Azkaban's Dementors, a precaution due to the prison break earlier this year. Do not approach the Dementors under any circumstances. With that, enjoy the feast!"
