Chapter 40- The Chandler Siblings
You made a huge mistake, Skye Chandler by telling. Now your nightmare is only going to get worse. JR has further instructions. If you dare tell again, say goodbye to Mommy dearest.
Skye swallowed hard and turned to JR. "Who gave this to you?"
JR pressed his index finger to his mouth and tilted his head towards the couch. "I can't tell you. He wants you to rip the note to shreds and drop it into the water by the docks in Port Charles."
Skye peeked at the couch and noticed a bug between the cushions.
"If I don't make you do it, he's going to kill Jamie," JR added. "He also wants you to get a job."
"What? Why does he care if I have a job?"
"And it has to be at Kelly's in Port Charles. And he wants you to stay there too, I guess they have rooms. He says you have until 6pm to complete everything. If you don't, he's going to make your mom disappear… Who is your mom by the way?"
Skye clenched her jaw. "Rae Cummings."
He raised an eyebrow. "That spikey-haired lady? She doesn't really seem like Dad's type…"
Skye rolled her eyes.
"Anyway… he'll also kill Jamie! Skye, please. I can't lose Jamie. I can't lose my brother."
Skye looked into JR's green eyes. "You really care about the little punk."
"Of course, I do. He's my brother."
"Even though you don't share a parent or blood?"
JR scrunched his face. "We do share parents. Mom and Tad. And Dad and Brooke were married before too. I don't care about blood."
Skye's face softened a bit. "Really?"
He nodded. "Please, help me… please?"
"Okay. I will help."
They turned abruptly when they heard footsteps.
"You need to tell someone!" It was Hayley.
Skye's eyes grew wide. "How much did you overhear?"
"All of it. What have you gotten yourselves into?"
"None of your business, that's what," Skye said.
Hayley crossed her arms. "Colby is my sister too. It's just as much my business as it is yours."
Skye shot her a look. "You mean more so, right? She's more your sister than she is mine!"
"What do you mean?" JR asked.
Hayley shook her head. "That's not what I meant. She's equally a sister to all of us. Now, why did JR give you a note and who is making you obey their commands?"
"Hayley…" JR said through gritted teeth. "Skye's mom and that guy might hear you. Don't talk so loud."
"Good. We should tell them."
"No!" JR pleaded. "If we tell, he's going to kill Jamie. Please don't, Hayley. Please…"
"But you guys can't go at this alone."
Skye cleared her throat. "I shouldn't have said anything in the first place. I know what I have to do. Hayley, keep quiet."
She tucked the note into her pocket as Stuart and Myrtle walked in.
Stuart smiled. "Skye, you're back."
"I—I gotta go…" She hurried to the staircase avoiding eye contact with Myrtle. She made her way to her room, passing her mom and John in Rae's room. She glanced around her poorly painted room and started to cry. This person was also threatening her brother on the Chandler side and her sister on the Quartermaine side. She wasn't 100% about Emily, but the way AJ described her behaviour she must be going through the same thing as Skye and JR. JR saw Jamie as his brother even though they didn't share blood, would he see Skye as his sister if he found out? She wasn't sure if she wanted the stupid kid to know. But something inside her wanted to protect her baby brother even after all the jealousy and resentment she felt towards him through the years, and she even wanted to protect Emily, the sister she didn't know. And now, he was threatening to make her mother disappear. As much as she wanted to stay, she couldn't let anything happen to Rae.
She grabbed a bag and packed the two outfits Rae bought her. That was all she owned now. Maybe the silver lining would be that Myrtle might be proud of her for getting a servant's job and staying in a tiny motel… God help her. But this was what she had to do.
Skye made her way out to the hallway and ran into John and Rae. Rae's eyes went to the bag, but Skye lowered her gaze to avoid eye contact.
"Uh, John," Rae said. "Can you give us a minute?"
"Of course," he said. "I'll be downstairs."
Skye clutched the bag tightly in her hands.
"Skye?" Rae lifted her chin so their eyes met. "Are okay? Why is your bag packed?"
Skye swallowed hard. "I—I need to go."
"Go where?"
"To find a job and get out on my own."
"Is this because of this morning?" Rae asked. "John told me you had an interesting afternoon together… But that you were getting along."
"So?" Skye shrugged. "You don't have to make a big deal about it. I'm a grown woman… which I know John says is debatable… but I'm going to get a job. I thought that's what you and Grandma wanted."
"Yes. But don't you want to stay here a little longer and save some money first?"
"It's not about want, okay? It's what I have to do."
Rae scrunched her face. "What do you mean have to?"
"Nothing," Skye said and threw her hands in front of her. "Just—just stop meddling, would you? This is my decision."
"Skye, you don't have to keep running," Rae said. "I understand that you're an adult and won't be here permanently… but that worries me. You have no money and you're running out there on your own with no plan and no job beforehand—"
"I don't need a plan, okay?" Skye snapped. "I just need to do what's better for everyone!"
Rae sighed. "I want to talk about this morning. Now before I found out you're my daughter, I said things to you that were horrible. Then I went too far the other way after I knew the truth. I need to be somewhere in the middle. I'm not going to tolerate a disrespectful attitude anymore. But that doesn't mean that it's better for everyone if you leave. I think Myrtle especially has helped you grow this past month. Don't run away from the people who stand by you."
Skye pushed away some of the tears from her eyes. "I really have to go. Just please… trust me."
"Trust you? What do you mean?"
"I—I have to go…"
Rae sighed. "Can you at least tell me where, so I don't have to organize another search for my daughter? Are you staying with Alan?"
Skye shook her head. "At Kelly's in Port Charles."
"A motel? Do you even have money for the night?"
"I—I have to go," Skye repeated.
"Skye? Are you being threatened again?"
Skye's eyes bulged. "Goodbye, Mother."
"Skye, please… don't go. If you want to search for a job, that's good. But at least wait for your first paycheck before moving out."
"Just stop talking! I have to go!" Skye whipped around, but then slowly turned back to her and said barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry… for the attitude and for John… and for being a terrible daughter."
"Skye, you don't have to do this—"
"Just stay close to John."
"If someone is threatening you, then tell me. John and I will help you—"
"Just trust me… Goodbye, Mom."
"Wait… wait here…" She hurried into her room, then returned with her purse. "Don't tell your grandmother…" She handed her a hundred-dollar bill. "Use this for food. Charge the motel to my name. At least until you get a job. And please take one of the guards with you."
Skye stared at the money and accepted it.
