HOLY FDKJFSDIJFSJFLDSFLSHLKFSLKHFDIOGSLD CHAPTER 40 ALREADY? Seems like I just started this one, even if I did take a year off of it.

Eight hours.

That's how much time was left til the trio made it back to Bobby's.

They woke up and got ready like any other day and loaded up the truck. This time Sam took up Dean's offer to sit in the front so Dean spread out in the backseat. John went through all the tapes he had, so they just had whatever radio station was in range. Sam daydreamed out the side window. Dean flipped through a random magazine he swiped from the hotel lobby during checkout.

Seven hours.

Sam had fallen asleep resting against the window. Dean was bored of his magazine so he sat up and stretched his arms.

"Hey."

"Hm? What?"

"We need to finish our conversation."

"Can we not and say we did?"

"You are locked in this car all day with me so no, not an option."

"Dad I really don't want to get into it right now."

"Is it true? Kid was never yours?"

Dean sighed. "Look I'm sorry. That stupid guidance counselor at school said something-"

"Guidance counselor?" John asked, completely caught off guard.

"Yeah Bobby's been making me see him."

"About what?"

"Basically anything else besides the family business. He didn't seem to care for that answer each time I told him."

"Huh." Was all John could say.

"Anyway," Dean continued, "I was avoiding her and then she showed up at the house and we got in a massive screaming match right before you showed up."

"That's why you were acting up?"

Dean nodded feeling embarrassed.

"I'm dropping out Dad."

John looked in the rearview mirror at his son. His silence told Dean to keep talking.

"This high school shit… I'm over it. It's not for me."

"Can't say I'm surprised at that. It's not what I'd like for you but then again…"

Dean scoffed. He just knew his dad wanted to finish that statement.

"Maybe I can come back with you?" Dean asked. "After I take the stupid test or whatever?"

"I'd like that."

Six hours.

John pulled over on an embankment along the highway so the boys could stretch their legs.

John paced back and forth along the side of the road on the phone, presumably with some other random hunter. Dean laid on his back on a giant rock. Sam leaned against the guardrail on the edge of the cliff staring at the storm clouds in the distance.

"Looks like it's gonna rain," John commented, hanging up the phone and walking over to Sam. "You doin' alright?"

Sam nodded.

"Look Sam, I know you considered that girl a friend but relationships like that go out the window with this job. You hear me?"

Sam nodded, slower this time.

"Dean said you had a thing for her at some point in Sioux Falls?"

Sam nodded slow again.

"I wouldn't have sent you in if I knew it would end how it did. You weren't ready for that."

Sam nodded yet again.

"Speak so I know you actually understand."

"Yes sir."

"Good," John mumbled, relieved he was able to get at least two words out of his mouth. Even if it had been the same two words he had been hearing the past couple days. "Let's get back on the road then."

Five hours.

It was noon at this point but they still had a way to go so they hit a McDonalds drive thru. Two burgers and a box of chicken nuggets later and they were back on the road.

Four hours.

John pulled into a gas station to fill up the car.

"Here," he said, handing the boys ten dollars. "Don't go crazy."

The two walked inside the small gas station shop. Sam ducked away to the one restroom in the building. Dean got a basket and started throwing snacks in it. A minute later, John came into the shop to join them.

"He say anything to you?" Dean asked.

"When?"

"Earlier at our last stop."

"You know he's never going to say anything to me Dean."

"Is he ever going to say anything again?"

"I don't like it either but he's made his decision."

"So we're just going to do whatever Sam wants?"

"This time, yes."

"Bull."

"Dean."

Sam came back from the bathroom and joined them.

"Finally!" Dean said, annoyed. He threw the basket at Sam. "Did you fall in or something?"

Sam was hurt by Dean's tone. He knew he wasn't happy about Sam's vow of silence and it felt like the longer it went on, the more upset Dean got.

"Ignore him," John said. "Find something you like?"

Sam threw a couple things in the basket. He went to the counter with John to pay for the snacks as John paid for the gas.

"Start the truck," John said, tossing the keys at Dean. "I'll be out in a minute."

The boys grabbed their snacks and went out to the truck. Dean claimed his front seat back and started the engine. Sam crawled back in the backseat and already started pulling out the same textbook again.

Dean, bored out of his mind, flicked a Cheeto at Sam, going right past his head and hitting the door.

Sam ignored him.

Dean flicked another Cheeto, this one bouncing off of Sam's shoulder.

Sam continued to ignore him.

So Dean flicked another, and this one hit Sam in the middle of this forehead and landed in his lap. This time Sam looked up at him and gave him a classic bitch look.

"I'll stop if you say 'Dean, you're the best big brother ever and I love you'."

Nothing.

"I'll settle for 'Dean, you're the best big brother'."

Still nothing.

"I'll settle for 'Dean'?"

That last one sounded like a question. Sam took a deep breath and shook his head. Dean sighed and turned back around in the front seat.

Three hours.

Two hours.

One hour.

Sam was so excited to put this whole weekend behind him he could hardly wait.

Dean was just looking forward to being back at Bobby's for a while. He knew Bobby could get Sam to talk.

At this point, it finally started to get dark and it had started to rain. Dean had fallen asleep in the front and Sam watched the rain drops on the window race each other.

Ten seconds.

John finally turned down the dirt road and pulled into Bobby's driveway. Bobby came out with an umbrella to greet them.

Sam cried out when he opened the car door, not realized how hard it was truly raining til he was standing in it.

"Hey kid," Bobby said when Sam ran up to hug him. "Missed ya."

"Yeah right," Dean said, also running over, mostly to stand under the umbrella.

"It's true. Too quiet around here sometimes."

Everyone quickly grabbed their things out of the car and went inside the house.

Home sweet home.
