Chapter 41

Festival Fun and School Mysteries

AN: I am finally back. I know this three parter took me forever but hey at least I was only gone a month and a week or so. This three chapter fic took a lot of research and plot planning. So maybe a couple of you have figure out where this is going thanks to the title already but this is another one of my masterpieces just like chapter 27 and 28 I worked a while and this is a very big game changer in the future of this story originally this was supposed to be where 27 and 28 were plot wise but things got mixed up and here we are for better or worse, if either chapter switched plots the entire storyline so far would have been different, I hope that this was the better way it could have turned out. Anyway on to the story

Nathan Adams just an average boy waking up to an average day but neither of those were the case. Nathan, Nate, Adams woke up a bit drowsy like a normal everyday kid but he woke up with a red cat from the dead who fought cars every day on his rug and a White blob of a ghostly butler floating above said cat. Nate was a boy who came to hold a device known as the yo-kai watch that allows him to see the spirits of this world but of course most of you already knew that. What you may not know was that today was a special day. Today was the day of the summer festival. Nate got up and got ready for the day he took a shower, got changed, brushed his teeth and his hair, then helped his mom make breakfast. By the time he started to help his mom, his spiritual companions came down as well. Jibanyan was laying on the couch watching TV lazing about like the cat he was while Whisper came over to talk with his master.

"Hmm good morning Nate you seem to be in a good mood and Jibanyan seems peppier than usual," Whisper said despite the cat yo-kai's yawn. "Almost like the mood itself is different, maybe it's the work of a yo-kai."

"Wrong again Whisper today is the summer festival," said Nate with a smile.

"Yeah nyan, everyone knows about it. It's that time again," said Jibanyan who came to join their conversation.

"The summer festival is pretty fun, they set up all sorts of food stands around town, there are tons of people out, there are lanterns, some games, and even a dance. People dance all around the town almost like a trot or something," said Nate.

"Ahhh, festivals I remember those, it's been quite a while since I have been to one of those," said Whisper, "I am glad to see humans still have them."

Jibanyan said, "I was wondering how you didn't knyow about the festival, I was going to ask if you were living under a rock but I guess you were basically trapped in one."

Whisper said, "Don't make fun of it, that place was horrible the crank-a-kai is one horrible place to be, very cramped but yes a festival sounds like great fun."

Nate said, "Yeah, but I guess I'll be spending the day taking care of yo-kai won't I." with a disappointed look.

Whisper said, "No, no, you won't need to worry about a thing us yo-kai love festivals as well."

Jibanyan said, "Yeah Nyate, we sure love to party."

Whisper said, "Most yo-kai take a day off from inspiriting and causing mischief today because we love festivals. If we messed with humans at festivals then they might not have them and that wouldn't be fun."

Jibanyan said, "Besides us, yo-kai are the life of the party even if we did inyspirit people it would just make the party that much more lively."

Nate said, "That's good to hear. I guess it makes sense even if people do act weird at festivals it is usually fun."

Whisper said, "Sometimes us yo-kai are the reason for your celebration, Nate."

Nate said, "Well I guess that will make tonight really fun."

Whisper said, "Hmm I thought Festivals were supposed to go all day long."

Nate said, "Well they do but in Springdale, we start our festivals at night and continue until morning."

Jibanyan said, "I remember going to the festival with Amy. She took me everywhere it was so nyice to see all the lights, and people, and Amy dance. I do hope I get to see her but it will be fun going with you this year Nyate I have not gone with a human since Amy."

Nate said, "Yeah and it's my first year with yo-kai.

Whisper said, "And it is my first one in over 190 years."

The entire town was getting ready for the festival and the daytime flew by. Nate and his family walked to mount wildwood watching the sunset. It was an amazing way to start the night At the base of the mountain where the stairs started Nate separated from his parents.

Nate's mom said, "Be safe sweetie."

Nate's dad said, "Have a good time but remember to come home before it gets too late."

Nate's mom said, "Have fun with your friends."

Nate said, "Don't worry I will have a fun night too." Nate then ran up the steps with Jibanyan and Whisper right behind.

Whisper said, "Ah I can already feel the energy."

Jibanyan said, "I know right but why are there so many steps." Nate, Whisper, and Jibanyan had ran past the lanterns hung on the way to the top lighting up the way to the festival. The lanterns made of stone that were also there were lit up as well. Nate was wearing a Kimono it was fairly simple it was mostly red almost like Jibanyan's fur with navy blue forming a long strip on the sides it for some reason had a big yellow M on both sides on the bottom apparently it belonged to Nate's grandfather and Nate's Grandmother sent it to him because she knew he would want his grandson to wear it. Nate was glad to wear it and it did make him feel closer to his grandfather. Nate eventually made it up, both his yo-kai companions knew they were there when…

"Ah the delicious smell of food." said Whisper, doing a little loop in the air as they made it to the first of the stands. It was true the smell of the festival was not one of heaven but rather food. Whisper said, "Ah how I missed the deliciousness of the festival I can't believe I almost forgot about it."

Jibanyan already got a bunch of food and said, "mmmnym this great."

Nate said, "I am glad you guys are already enjoying this." Nate took a quick scan with his watch, "Woah! You guys were right this place is filled with yo-kai!" There were as many yo-kai as there were people. Some Nate knew others he had never seen before but they all looked very happy and festive just like the humans who were enjoying the festival atmosphere.

Whisper said, "I don't know who couldn't like the festival."

Jibanyan said, "Me nyeither." Nate walked a bit until he ran into Lucas who was right by the steps leading up to the shrine.

Lucas said, "Hey Nate!" as the kid and his yo-kai friends approached the other boy. Lucas was wearing a dark purple Kimono with light blue and crimson red bits, the red seemed to form a symbol of some sort and the blue made an odd shape.

Nate said, "Hey Lucas."

Whisper said, "Hello there Lucas."

Jibanyan said, "Hi Lucas."

Lucas said, "Hey guys."

Nate asked, "Enjoying the festival right."

Lucas said, "Yeah but about that..."

Eddie followed by Bear came from behind Nate and said, "Hey guys what's up."

Bear said, "This festival is great."

Eddie said, "Heck yeah it is." Eddie was in a dark green Kimono with a bit of lighter green mixed in it was simple but still classy and festive and of course he was still wearing his signature headphones. Bear was wearing a light navy blue Kimono with black but there seemed to be a cartoonish Bear on the back.

Bear said, "The food is great."

Eddie said, "and so are the games."

Bear teased, "Too bad you haven't won any."

Eddie said, "Ah come on man."

Lucas said, "Seems like you two are having fun."

Nate asked, "Hey Bear where is Lulu?"

Bear said, "Oh she's hanging out with Meg and Sarah. It's not like we spend all our time together but we are planning on dancing together."

Eddie said, "Yeah, yeah but hey speaking of girls where is Lina and Zoey? I wanted to talk to them about the investigation."

Nate asked, "What investigation?"

Lucas said, "That's what I wanted to talk about."

Bear said, "It turns out that the wildlife club and the ghost club are doing one last investigation tonight."

Lucas said, "Lina and Zoey convinced Alex, Kenny, and Eric to join us one more time."

Eddie said, "We are investigating the school this time and then we are going to watch the fireworks from the roof."

Lucas asked, "Are you in Nate?"

Nate said, "Um, sure when are we going."

Lucas said, "Well after we get everyone but after the dance."

Nate said, "Okay then."

Whisper said, "ooh this should be exciting, one last trip into the school at night."

Jibanyan said, "Well I guess we better stock up on food nyow."

Nate asked, "What are we investigating anyway?"

"Obviously we are investigating the seven school mysteries!" said Hailey Anne Thomas sporting a light purple Kimono with the sailor cuties on it coming up to startle Nate.

Jessica who was wearing a yellow and blue Kimono said, "Sorry about her she can be like that, Hey Eddie."

Nate said, "It's fine I really should be used to it considering Lina and Zoey."

"What was that about us adams." said Zoey, sending a chill down Nate's spine.

"You got to be kidding me." said Nate recovering from his double shock, "I was just saying how I am not used to you and Lina yet." Zoey was wearing a dark blue Kimono that was a darker shade than bear but had light blue spirits on it. Lina wore a purplish indigo that had wisps like Komasan had.

Zoey said, "hahaha, I don't think you will ever be used to me and I like it that way."

Bear said, "Sometimes I don't know if you are more scary than the ghosts sometimes."

Eddie said, "Well Zoey is real besides you haven't fainted around her yet."

Zoey asked, "Okay, Mr. Skeptic if ghosts aren't real then how come you fainted last time?" with a grin on her face and a demonic, cunning look in her eyes.

Eddie said, "I didn't faint, I just passed out from exhaustion."

Zoey said, "Sure."

Hailey said, "Ah darn it. I can't believe I missed a real ghost and one that scared the socks off of Eddie too." Bear, Zoey, and Jessica laughed at that.

Zoey said, "I knew I liked you."

Lina, Nate, Whisper, and Lucas just watched their argument with amusement while Lina and Lucas caught Nate and Whisper up on what was going on both normally and yo-kai wise while Jibanyan stocked up on snacks. Eventually Eddie, Zoey, Bear, Hailey, and Jessica all seemed to have disappeared; they probably went up top to the shrine where everyone was gathering for the Bon Dance. Nate, Lucas, and Lina were about to head up to join everyone along with Whisper.

"Hey Nate wait up." said Katie as she just seemingly emerged from the crowd, "Oh hi Lina and Lucas."

"Hello Katie." said Lina and Lucas with small smiles and short waves.

"Hey Katie." said Nate, "What's up." Katie was wearing a bright pink Kimono with what seemed to be her signature heart in a lighter pink with white outlines.

"Oh nothing just enjoying the festival." said Katie, "I just wanted to talk with you and everyone else before we investigate the school. Alex already filled me in about most of it."

"Wait your coming too!" Nate said a bit surprised, "I thought you weren't into this sorta thing."

"Well I didn't think my parents would like me going out late but tonights special so I thought I might join you guys." said Katie, "Plus it will be so cool to watch the fireworks on the roof by ourselves." No one else could catch it but Nate's face expressed surprise, realization, and disappointment almost simultaneously in one second before going back to normal.

Lucas then used a bit of his courage to ask, "Um Lina would you happen to want to dance with me tonight for you know the partners dance?" This was one of the few times Nate saw anxiety on Lucas' normally calm face.

Lina gave a smile and a giggle saying, "Sure, That sounds nice."

Lucas said, "Thanks, that does sound nice."

Nate said, "Hey Katie you wanna dance with me too."

Katie said, "Sure thing, two friends dancing together sounds great." No one noticed but Whisper saw that both gave a slight cringe at that statement.

Whisper said, "Hmm it's been so long since I have seen dances like this it will be fun."

Jibanyan said, "It's okay I guess." having came back with a load of snacks in hand.

The four kids went up the final steps to the shrine where everyone was getting ready for Bon Dance. Nate saw that there was a yo-kai floating above everyone. It seemed to be a blue and orange-red drum that seemed to be fueling the festival.

Nate whispered, "Hey Whisper who is that?"

Whisper looked and said, "Oh I actually know this one, this one is—"

Jibanyan said, "Oh that's Don Chan."

Whisper said, "How dare you!"

Lucas said, "He is the definition of life of the party, his beats make people very happy and creates the perfect rhythm to dance to. Of all the yo-kai here he is the most happy when it comes to festivals."

Whisper said, "Will you two stop stealing my job!"

Lucas said, "Sorry." while Jibanyan said, "Nyo I don't think I will."

Whisper almost strangled Jibanyan saying, "Why you."

Soon everyone joined up for the dance. Everyone joined hands and then danced moving in a loop with the circle, moving in and out of the circle, eventually the circle broke and people danced circles in the circle.

All the while Don Chan cheered, "There you go, you got it, amazing job everyone, you guys really got this, you're all doing fantastic." still creating a perfect beat for everyone. The dance itself seemed to make the festival even more bright and happy. The dance ended and then couples started to dance while everyone else gave the couples who danced space. Lulu and Bear were out there having a good time dancing together. Soon they were joined by Lucas and Lina. Katie then took Nate's hand and they smiled at each other before dancing together.

Eddie was noticeably disappointed all his friends were out dancing.

"Come on Eddie let's go dance." said Hailey grabbing Eddie by the hand to dance with her.

"Have fun Eddie." said Jessica.

"This is really fun Nate," said Katie.

"Yeah it is," said Nate. Both had bright smiles on their faces.

"May I tag in?" asked Jessica. Katie and Nate both smiled.

"Sure Katie, you fine if I…" started Nate.

"Sure thing, I am going to take a break. The shaved ice looks really good," said Katie.

Jessica didn't know Nate that well but they weren't complete strangers to each other so it was just simple fun when they smiled at each other and danced. Zoey tagged out with Hailey to dance with Eddie only for them to argue while they danced. Lina, Lucas, Lulu, and Bear all stopped dancing, having been satisfied with their dance. Eddie and Nate were still out there when Hailey traded off with Jessica and Katie switched out with Zoey. After the four finished dancing Nate and Eddie were exhausted.

"Wow that was more tiring than it looked." said Eddie.

"Yeah we both did a lot of dancing." said Nate. They looked at each other and laughed as they helped each other walk.

"Come on you two dancers let's get going." said Zoey as she called them from a few steps down from the shrine. They were joined by Alex, Kenny, and Eric who were all dressed casually compared to everyone else.

"Yeah hurry up you slow pokes." said Alex.

"We have no time to waste, guys." said Eric.

"Yeah I wanna get this over with." said Kenny. Nate and Eddie looked at each other again and shared a groan. The two boys slowly trudged down the stairs together.

Despite all the festive air up atop Mount Wildwood and all the bright lights. All that was gone despite only being a few steps up the mountain. Everyone was back in their normal clothes putting their Kimonos in their respective backpacks. They were looking at the side of the school; it looked very dark and ominous in the night. It was like an entirely different building; it was eerie and sent chills down Nate and Eddie's spines and from the ground it looked impossibly tall. To Nate it somehow looked taller than that unfinished building downtown.

Bear said, "Well it took you guys long enough."

Eddie said, "What that was a lot of steps we really should have like an escalator or something."

Nate said, "It wasn't that bad Eddie but man that was the longest walk ever."

Katie said, "Oops I guess we shouldn't have pushed you so hard dancing."

Hailey said, "I guess that's what they get for being too good at dancing."

Alex said, "Come on everyone let's not waste anymore time we just need to figure out how to get in there."

Lina said, "It's no good."

Lucas said, "Yeah we need a key."

Zoey said, "Unless anyone here knows how to pick a lock."

Kenny said, "Well sorta."

Eric said, "I have an idea on how to do it."

Hailey said, "Okay then start trying."

Alex said, "Yeah come on you two you got this." Eric and Kenny both nervously started fiddling with the office door pushing and pulling and turning and twisting.

Whisper said, "Maybe Nate you can use some yo-kai help to get in there."

Toiletta said, "Of course you could." Nate, Jibanyan and Whisper were all startled by the ghost girl's sudden appearance.

"What surprised you?" asked Espy following up Toiletta from the otherside startling Nate, Whisper, and Jibanyan once again.

Nate asked, "When did you get here?"

Toiletta said, "We were at the festival too you know."

Espy said, "We were getting lots of festival food like Jibanyan here."

Toiletta said, "You guys will need me in this investigation, I know my way around the school at night better than any of you."

Espy said, "Besides we're not going to let you have all the fun battling."

Jibanyan said, "But I thought you didn't like battles?"

Espy said, "No I just don't like getting my hands dirty helping out by mind reading gives me some pleasure."

Nate asked, "Toiletta can you get us in?"

Whisper said, "Of course not even if resided in this school at one point doesn't mean she can get us in you know Nate."

Toiletta said, "Yeah, I left my set of keys in the school." Whisper's jaw dropped.

Lina said, "But we have another plan."

Lucas said, "It is a good thing we have most of them distracted." looking over seeing most of the other kids watching Kenny and Eric try and fail to open the door."

Zoey said, "I guess I'll summon him then, Calling the ghostly souls from beyond, yo-kai medal unleash, Calling Mirapo." Zoey flipped the coin like-medal and then caught it and inserted it into her watch.

With a spiral of yellow light Mirapo appeared.

Mirapo said, "Ah hello, I am at your service."

Lina said, "Okay so Lucas, Toiletta, and I will enter the office through Mirapo and grab the keys you and Zoey will give us a signal on when it is safe to come out or distract everyone."

Zoey said, "Sure you can take Espy too, just to make sure you two love birds don't do anything in there."

Toiletta laughed with Zoey with Lucas and Lina showing hints of red, "Don't worry Zoey I'll tell you everything that happens."

Espy said, "And I will make sure they actually find the keys."

Lina and Lucas and Espy and Toiletta. entered Mirapo and made their way to the principal's office.

It was fairly easy to make sure no one noticed the two were gone. Everyone was still busy watching Kenny and Eric try opening the door with Eddie and Bear giving random advice in between each try and Hailey coming up with bizarre ideas to open the door and random references to fandoms no one else knew about. Alex and Hailey were already growing to be good friends. Alex liked that Hailey was so open about her weirdness though she didn't always understand what Hailey was talking about. Zoey and Nate didn't have to do much to keep them occupied and Lucas and Lina as sad as it was were not very noticeable though it seemed Lina liked it that way and Lucas was used to it. Eventually Toiletta and Espy came out through Mirapo and said Lina and Lucas found the key.

Zoey said, "Okay here we go Nate you with me?"

Nate said, "Sure I guess."

Kenny said, "Urh let's face it we are never getting in."

Eric said, "Yeah this thing is locked good."

Eddie said, "Too bad I didn't bring my trick key."

Katie said, "Maybe there's another way in."

Alex said, "Yeah I don't think we should give up just yet."

Hailey said, "Yeah we can never give up trying to bring the light of the truth to this world. We must know what is inside."

Zoey said, "Yeah that's the spirit."

Nate said, "Um, maybe we could get a ladder. I think the science lab window is still open."

Zoey said, "Hey isn't there a ladder in the gym or something like that."

Nate said, "Yeah I think so."

Bear said, "Lets go get it." and then rushed off with Kenny and Eric to go and try to find a ladder."

Eddie said, "Urhh, I don't think that's safe or if there is even a ladder tall enough. I'll go make sure they don't do anything stupid."

Alex said, "Okay and we'll see if any windows are open."

Hailey said, "Yeah there has to be one open, it is hot in there."

Katie said, "Okay so we are looking for an open window."

Nate said, "Yup preferably on the second floor."

Zoey said, "We could be lucky to find one open on the first floor too." Nate then signaled Jibanyan to go and tell Lina and Lucas they could come out. After a couple minutes searching Eddie, Kenny, Eric, and Bear came back.

Kenny said, "We couldn't find a ladder tall enough."

Eric said, "I think they keep all the tall ladders in the storage room inside."

Eddie said, "Probably so kids like us don't try to use them."

Bear said, "Darn it."

Katie said, "Don't worry we didn't find any open windows anyway."

Alex said, "Well that's a bummer."

Hailey said a bit distressed and disappointed, "How are we supposed to get in now?!"

Lina called out, "We found it!" Everyone turned to look at the blue haired girl and the bespectacled boy. Lina was holding up keys. Everyone rushed over.

Eddie asked, "Where did you find them?"

Bear asked, "Where were they?"

Kenny asked, "Do they work?"

Eric said, "We should try them out."

Hailey said, "Psych, so cool."

Alex said, "You guys are the coolest."

Lucas did the honors and unlocked the office. It was dark and lonely on the outside but the inside was a whole other level. There was a reason there were so many rumors about it late at night.

Lucas stepped in first followed by Lina, Zoey, Katie, Bear, Alex, Hailey, Eddie, Kenny, Eric, finally Nate with the four yo-kai also coming in with them.

Jibanyan said, "Wow this place is creepy."

Toiletta said, "Ah I missed nights like these."

Espy said, "Hmm it is very dark in here."

Whisper said, "Perfect place for kids to explore." Toiletta, Jibanyan, and Espy all looked at Whisper like he was insane.

Everyone searched around the room.

Alex said, "So cool."

Hailey said, "This place is very different at night."

Kenny said, "Sorta creepy."

Eric said, "Yeah I don't know about this."

Eddie said, "It's fine we have been here thousands of times."

Bear said, "Yeah we're not even out the door yet."

Nate said, "Well I guess this is why there are so many stories about the school."

Lucas said, "Yeah and we are going to explore each room."

Lina said, "Yup and find out every legend."

Zoey added, "And myth."

Katie said, "That sounds cool all of the seven mysteries right?"

Lina said, "Yeah."

Eddie said, "And how they're fake."

Zoey said, "He means how they are true."

Kenny said, "Um g-guys." Everyone looked at Kenny and saw what he was looking at.

It was a shadow of what seemed to be a little kid. The shadow said, "Come play with me!" in an eerie voice and then vanished.

Nate asked, "What was that?!"

Lucas said, "I don't know."

Whisper said, "We didn't have enough time to identify it, I don't even know if it was a yo-kai."

Jibanyan said, "That had to be a yo-kai."

Nate said, "Wait." as he and Lucas looked around. Whisper and Jibanyan noticed it too.

Lucas asked, "Where are the others?"

AN: So here we all some of you may have expected to get to that point but I really hope you enjoyed this chapter, not much action or plot but it was a festival it is in the name of the chapter, festival fun, though don't worry the School Mysteries are coming and let's see how Nate and his friends react to all this. Yes this had hints at shipping and I am known as a multishipper some of you might remember from a few chapters back, I couldn't help it, I have a philosophy about dance as it is one of my few forms of emotional expression.
