Psyche! Here's the continuation of the previous chapter, everyone. Though, I hate this chapter. And that's my only excuse aside from being a terrible author. And with that said, let's proceed onto the story.

Let's rebel against the Government. Why? Because we're FREE citizens, silly.

-Forgotten: Thunder-

Amanda sat in long silence. She gave it a minute to process the words out. 'Captain. Roger. Maxson.'

Amanda frowned. Then cursed in muttering. Amanda tried her best to remain calm, despite her exhaustion, before playing the holotape once again to hear the full message.

"Lieutenant Taggerdy here. Captain? It's you?"

"Lizzy? Damn. It's good to hear a friendly voice."

"Captain. I heard... I heard you're a traitor..."

"Traitor? If disobeying unconscionable orders makes you a traitor, then I suppose I am..."

Traitor? And named Maxson. And the name was so known within the history of the Brotherhood of Steel. Seems to good to be true... Amanda listened very closely, much to her discomfort as there was a small pause before the voice, Roger Maxson, continued.

"Lizzy, I'm glad you're alive but I need to find someone in Appalachia. Someome dependable."

"That's where I am. The Thunder was running War Games against some Jarheads."

"They still in one piece? By god, Lizzy. This... This is great news."

"Roger, you're a traitor. I could be court-martialed even talking to you."

"Look around, Lizzy. The Army's gone. America's fallen... Look. I know you have questions, but we need to talk. There are things, I learned in California. Here at Mariposa. But right now, I got a scientist with me... Doctor Takano. We'll set up a secure channel. And I'll answer all your questions then."

"Captain..."

"Lizzy, you know me. We need to talk."

"We'll monitor this band. Taggerdy out."

The message then ended. Amanda was in silence as she processed all the information given by the holotape... Mariposa, if she guess it right is likely to be that secret base on California that General Ward mentioned... Where the FEV, Forced Evolutionary Virus, was developed that first created the super mutants... Amanda even heard stories while back at California about the certain hero figure. The Vault Dweller, from the Vault at Southern California, who fought an army of super mutants and its unknown Master... If rumours and old folk tales can be true... Perhaps, this Mariposa might tie up with those old legends... In fact, it even stated California, where this Mariposa was located... Could it all be really connected to the folk lores?

Amanda decided to read the last note. This one, however, did surprised her by the slightest.

The radio chatters of madness and death. And most of all: Chaos. No one's in charge. Moreno picked up some government transmission out of Charleston. But no military command.

We're supposed to re-establish the chain of command. But after what Maxson said... Could our government really be using military prisoners as test subjects? Injecting them with experimental serums like human guinea pigs..? I can't believe it.

I'm getting off book here, but the first priority is survive. Gather supplies. Hunker down and make it through the winter. De Silva says there's a survival training camp northeast from here. Hopefully we can come to some arrangement.

The next time a storm hits us we set out, and if we do it right, no one will even see us.

That's another hint on the clue about Roger Maxson's betrayal. His desertion, from the US military... Amanda didn't wanted to speculate further... But if what Roger claims about the Government being involved for the creation of the FEV to be true... That could only mean, the Government itself, was to be considered responsible. After all... This was all during the conflict with the Chinese before the bombs fell. Presumably, their prisoners as test subjects were either Chinese POWs, or American Chinese sympathizers... Amanda sighed. She was too tired to deal with this. But keeping the holotapes and notes on her inventory, she might just have to grab another spare time to search for more information and to find out more. More specifically, about this group of Army Rangers.

Amanda then stood up, and decided to give herself some time to rest for at least five hours of sleep.

By the time she woke up and fixed herself after a needed rest, she immediately went out to find Nick, whom she found present along with a few Lieutenants, marking locations on a large map of West Virginia. Nick eventually noticed her before approaching.

"I'm hoping you'd at least got some well needed rest..."

Nick slowly began. Amanda shortly frowned but immediately responded.

"Five hours is enough. Can you walk with me..?"

Amanda said. Though, hesitantly on the last part of her statement. Nick slowly nodded and the two of them began to take a stroll on the airport.

"So... What's on your mind? I mean, you never... Invited me to walk with you, not at least once. And surely... There's a reason why?"

Nick slowly began. Amanda is folded her arms before turning her head over to him.

"The holotapes that you've found on Spruce Knob... They contained discussions about Mariposa. I assume it to be a secret military base on California, to which where the FEV might've possibly originated."

"And so I've read the note sticking on the other side of the other... One where the pre-war Government was said to be involved, using military prisoners as test subjects..."

Amanda vaguely nodded.

"But... There's more... Those holotapes you've found. One of them at least, contains discussion about the desertion of a military Captain. Roger Maxson."

Nick's eyes went wide for a moment. Then he became confused.

"Maxson? Well, isn't that too far off? I mean... We're aware the Brotherhood started out on the west coast. Particularly, California. And you also mentioned that the Vault Dweller actually got to meet this Elder, John Maxson... On the Lost Hills bunker... Descendant, or late descendant."

"I don't know if it's really connected, or just a possible coincidence... But... What if..."

Amanda trailed off. Nick picked up on her cue.

"What if, this is the ancestor of Arthur Maxson, who first started out the Brotherhood? Well... That leaves a lot of speculations and open theories to go for but... What do you have in mind?"

Amanda took a long moment in thinking. Hesitantly, she looked back at Nick before responding.

"You've found the holotapes and notes at Spruce Knob. One of the notes you've found was written by Army Ranger Lieutenant Taggerdy. Part of it was mentioning of relocating to a survival training camp northeast from Spruce Knob..."

"You wanna trail them out, see what you can find?"

Amanda didn't responded but instead, searched the location northeast of Spruce Knob.

"I've got it marked on my map... I'd like you to come with me just in case I need some... Help..."

Amanda finally said. Though, reluctantly. Nick gave a slight nod.

"All right. But we won't have much time, though. I'm heading out with a recon team to Charleston soon. The city can be a potential use for further expansion once its rid of some Scorched."

Nick replied. Amanda mentally sighed before nodding and giving a response.

"Understood... Let's move out now so we can get back sooner."

On the way to the marked location on which was northeast of Spruce Knob, Amanda nixed nick fiddling with his laser rifle. She couldn't help but give a little comment.

"You know you have access to Enclave grade weaponry. Right? You don't have to stick with that... Obsolete tin..."

Amanda commented. Almost as if she was making a little remark. One with a bit of humor in it. A poorly executed one, it least.

Nick sighed before slowly replying.

"Well, so long as it can help me defend myself, I'm fine with it. And besides... The plasma rifles are too... Complex, and complicated for me to use..."

Amanda mentally snorted. She was amused, somehow... So she proceeded on their little conversation.

"I was issued with a Plasma Thrower. But I discarded it for a plasma rifle that I am still modifying myself. But for now, I just prefer to gun a target with laser fire... Though, the laser minigun has its perks, it's still outdated. Even for Enclave standards... I'm thinking of donating all of our current standard issued laser miniguns to the Minutemen once the Enclave has the needs for newer weapons for service..."

Amanda earned a look from Nick. A mixture of surprised, and confusion masked on his face.

"Well... Ain't that something I don't usually hear from you... No offense."

Amanda shortly frowned. But somehow, she just mentally smirked. In a smugly way of course.

"The thought about the Minutemen actually improving their tech and equipment to the same level as the Brotherhood at the Commonwealth is... Quite a greater sign... They can further their goals. All thanks to your help. And as for the US Army... I've heard from the other commanders that you're still signing paperwork, in regards to donating pre-war grade equipment to the US Army. I guess I shouldn't be surprised why the Brotherhood would be starting some pointless argument, just because the others got the same toys as theirs..."

Amanda didn't said anything about that part. Sure... It was true. She still supports the preexisting factions in the Commonwealth, though vigilantly, but otherwise she still has ties with said factions. Except the Boston Brotherhood. Amanda cleared her throat and spoke a little firmly. But mixed with a tiny bit of softness in her tone.

"What I do... I do it. For the Commonwealth. Nick. And the Enclave, of course."

Nick just smiled gently.

"And I can say that you're telling the truth. I just misunderstood you, that's all."

There was pause. Amanda shortly watched the view of the forests down below.

"Do you really think the US Army fit in on this harsh society? You know what I mean..."

Amanda slowly said. Though, hesitantly.

"Well... They're people too. People with ideals. Beliefs. Like the Brotherhood, Railroad, Minutemen. And the Enclave..."

There was another pause. Amanda noticed Nick turning his full attention to her.

"But I've been meaning to ask you, Amanda... What is the belief of the Enclave?"

Amanda was silent for a long moment and the only thing that could be heard was the rotors of the vertibird. But she then cleared her throat and hesitantly replied.

"The Enclave's belief... Is rebuilding America's future. One Enclave. One America."

"Wait. What? I- I thought no more genocide? Reforming the Enclave, rebuilding what can be rebuilt and all that? What the hell, Amanda..."

Amanda snorted a little loud as she began shaking her head. A tiny, to the slightest bit of smirk was on her lips. Thankfully she was in her power armor with her helmet on.

"Oh... You think this is funny, huh? Hmph. Laugh it off if you want... But... You did got me with that, though..."

Amanda just shook her head. She can't believe she actually got Nick into believing what she just said. But either way, Amanda felt wierd interacting with Nick like this... This was just so unprofessional... But she can still have some bits of fun, too... After all... She's just trying her best to keep herself comforted with the Enclave from her tragic loss of Nate. And Shaun... But fuck Shaun, she has the Enclave.

"The Enclave's belief is to rebuild what can be rebuilt. Nick. Without any exchange, we try to... Reform fractions of what the US Government used to be. No hiding in Oil Rigs, no plotting, no abducting. I admit, we had to kill at first... That was our error. We shouldn't have been too much judging by the books' cover. Like the NCR with the huge issues of abused, and unchecked politics. We shouldn't have gone too extreme on them, but they left us no choice. But... What happened... Happened. The only thing I can do with the Enclave is to learn from that mistake. We're not perfect, Nick. And we ought to try and... Restart the Enclave's function by its military... But when were ready... And when people are ready, to accept the Enclave as a whole... Then maybe... We can call ourselves... A Government. Maintaining a Commonwealth's nation with balanced freedom, law and order. No abuse of power. Maybe... I screw over on that third at first on the west coast... But just give me more time. Give the Enclave more time. We're still struggling despite our current power just to reform the Enclave itself. Not everyone can process and accept all of the 'Enclave trying to rebuild what can be rebuilt' scenario that were doing. That we're, doing. We need to give people time to adjust, and accept things. Hell, I'm still trying to adjust and accept the Wasteland myself..."

Amanda stated. Nick stared at her with wide eyes. Clearly stunned from everything that she just said. But after recollecting himself, he finally gave a response.

"Is that... True..? All of it?"

Amanda didn't gave any emotion to this. Rather, in retaliation to her own feelings. But she just opened up to Nick. And she intended to do it either way. But somehow, she was hesitant. Even from the start.

"It's up to you, however you want to believe it. My men follow me for the ideals, Nick. I made sure that, they'll follow me, for the ideals that I strive for the Enclave to achieve. Not to follow me directly. If I fall... The Enclave would as well, seeing that I am the only one they follow. I made sure, and I keep making sure that they won't follow me directly on my own personal paths. So if anything happens to me -The Enclave would not collapse. Because they don't follow me, personally. But they follow, the Enclave's ideals. To rebuild, what can still be rebuilt in this Wasteland. That's their belief. This isn't about me. It's about the Enclave, and how it should've been in the first place. Nick."

Amanda took her time to say every word out. It makes her feel uncomfortable the more she continued. But to the point that she still openly shared to Nick... She took that as an opportunity. It's nothing because of anything of other intention. But because -She trusts Nick. She hated that, yes. But secretly, she does. More than anyone that she'd met on this damned soil. And that's a secret that Amanda would never tell anyone other than Patriot, or Chuck.

Amanda was then silent on the way to their destination.

After getting dropped off by the vertibird, Amanda was looking on the map of her Pip-Boy to see if she and Nick were headed the right way. The marked location on her map northeast of Spruce Knob labeled 'Camp Venture' which she and Nick were close by. Amanda hopped back on her power armor before joining Nick, who was scouting around.

"Are we on the right direction?"

Nick asked. Amanda vaguely nodded.

"Yes. And we're close to our destination. Let's go."

Amanda replied before taking point. It was a little long walk, but they were close to the training camp.

"So..."

Amanda heard Nick, but instead of looking at him, she instead paid attention as she kept her focus on their way.

"... I've been thinking about that message on one of those notes. I mean... Could the government be really using prisoners as... Guinea pigs for their scientists?"

Amanda took a moment before giving a reply.

"On my perspective, I can't even tell certainly if the pre-war government was that truly involved. Just because of some messages from dead individuals. But knowing the pre-war government... Nothing even fair back then. Things are... Quite rigged on others favors. Through force, and manipulation. But who am I to judge?"

"What do you mean?"

Amanda shortly frowned.

"I was a lawyer, Nick. I tried to make sure that everyone got fair trial. But not a guaranteed that everytime, I win a case. Most of my clients, 50-50, would get stepped on by those above them, and that's the example of how the world wasn't fair back then other than petty wars. It was a little similar to now... But you should know that. You have pre-war Nick's memories..."

"Yeah. Right... But what you said implies... The system favors more of those whose have power? More than those that are actually... The innocent?"

Amanda didn't said anything by that shortly.

"That was a long time now. Nick. But I wouldn't say the world before to be... Perfect... It was full of wars. And that's the right description I'd give to the pre-war era."

Amanda finished. Just in time as they arrived at Camp Venture. The entirety of the camp was well fortified to say the least. Minus the few skeletons that litter the environment.

"Seems empty..."

Nick said quietly.

"We don't know that, Nick. Let's be cautious..."

Amanda replied, then took point on proceeding further to Camp Venture.

"Let's split up, Nick. I'll go check that cabin, you go check the other."

Amanda quietly ordered. Nick gave a small nod before parting ways.

Taking a cautious approach, regardless of the sounds of her power armor, Amanda saw the inside of the small establishment to be some sort of... Command center. Amanda quickly noticed another Vault Tec supply cache. On top of it, was a holotape.

Amanda sighed shortly before approaching the supply cache and taking the holotape. After inspecting it, she hopped out of her power armor before playing the recorded message.

"Overseer's log. Camp Venture.

Just who was this Brotherhood of Steel? Survivalists? Former Army personel? They took their training and their call signs seriously, that's for certain. Organized, efficient, access to hardware. You'd think they'd be ruling West Virginia by now, but they're gone.

If they're following military logic, then they'll have a fortified headquarters somewhere. And a leader. Someone who knew what they were planning."

"Oh my god... No... Why..? Fuck..."

These are the only reaction Amanda could give. Taggerdy and she rangers relocated here, as courtesy of Taggerdy's note... But, she did knew Roger Maxson, who was a traitor to not only the US government, but to its own military as well... Then... This...

Amanda sighed deeply. She frowned, and then she looked around.

'Well... I'm here now. Might as well find out I can...'

Amanda thought to herself as she began searching around the command center. She found a note, and a pair of holotapes on the table. Amanda decided to focus her attention on the note, which read the following.

From: Knight Esposito, Training Sergeant

To: Sr Knight Wilson, Training C.O.

Subject: The Belmonte Incident

I take full responsibility for Squire Belmonte's letter home. I make no excuses. I want to point out, however, that operational security and procedures was covered twice during training. But clearly, the subject needs considerably more emphasis. I will endeavor, going forward, to drill this into my cadets accordingly. Ad victoriam.

Ad Victoriam. Amanda was uncomfortable by this... Now she can assume these Ranger became the Brotherhood of Steel here on Appalachia. But she can't label them as 'Traitors' or 'Deserters' from the United States military as there isn't technically any proof to back that up, unlike Roger Maxson... Perhaps, it would be safer for her to assume that they just integrated... To survive perhaps.

By the time Amanda had gathered herself from her thoughts, she eventually decided to play one of the two unknown holotapes until Nick suddenly came walking in.

"The other cabin is clear. Seems to me that it had been used as a bunkhouse for the people that used this place. Specifically, a barracks. Also found some notes, and holotapes, too."

Nick said as he laid down the items on the table. Amanda wore a stern expression.

"What's wrong?"

Nick asked. Amanda sighed before responding.

"Let's just say... This Camp itself. Is former Brotherhood of Steel."

"Wait... Are you sure?"

Amanda didn't said anything after that before handing Nick the note that she had read.

"Ad Victoriam... Huh? Guess that's one proof all right..."

Amanda rolled when eyes before playing the holotape that she was intending to play.

"Appalachia online, Captain."

A woman's voice began, but then came another voice.

"I know most of you love America. The good old red, white, and blue. But those of us that served at Mariposa know something. America, failed. Not because its citizens, who lived clean lives filled with hardship in a never ending war. And certainly not because of its fighting men and women. God bless them. No, its leaders failed us. Senators, Generals, Presidents, all those bastards. Their failure almost destroyed all mankind."

"Roger Maxson... Damn traitor..."

Amanda muttered. Nick heard her, and looked at her in surprise before listening closely.

"But I look around here, and I see survivors. People too stubborn, too damned ornery to die. We've fought and we've endured and finally we have a small patch of safety. But having a home isn't enough. We need something more. What we need is... purpose. But we cannot look to the America of old for that purpose. We have to build our own."

"Hey, we don't have to listen to this. Amanda... If you're not too comfortable-"

"No. I want to hear the rest... Maybe we can use this to our advantage..."

"So tonight, as we break bread together. Let us forge together something new. Something strong. Something we can be proud of. Something we can build upon. We'll preserve what's best of what's come before and use it. And one day, we will reclaim what was lost... Let us forge -A Brotherhood of Steel."

"Well I'll be damned... That's one piece of history all right..."

Nick muttered. Amanda only released a sigh, clearly trying her best to hold herself back from any outrage by this. Taking the other holotape that she found, she began to insert it on the Pip-Boy.

"You sure you're alright... Listening to the messages, Amanda? You know... That's not necessarily needed..."

Amanda sighed once more before responding.

"I have to hear it either way... After all... We're taking in every bit of information we can manage here on Appalachia..."

She responded, almost too hesitantly. Nick only smiled gently at her. God, how could he still be so nice to her after all her attitude toward him...

"Thank you, Captain. It's just us."

Taggerdy's voice began.

"Lizzy. What's on your mind?"

Then came Maxson's in response. It was almost as if the two were communicating through live radio frequency. Better yet, a privately secured frequency.

"A Brotherhood of Steel? What's that even mean? The men over here are confused..."

"Lizzy. We need to do something bold. We can't just stay the US Army. What's going to happen, and this is only for a matter of time -Is some general, or some goddamned politician is going to exit a Vault and start ordering us around. And worse they'll order some grunt to start the whole damned cycle again. Another wave of nuclear death. And if that's not enough they'll do it again. You know they will, Lizzy... But it ends with us. -We won't let them."

At this point, Nick wore an approving look surprisingly. Most specifically, for the part of Roger's prediction of another wave of nukes. Then he looked at Amanda.

"Don't give me that look. Nick."

"Well, I'm not accusing you of anything, Amanda..."

Amanda sighed almost frustratingly.

"I... I understand. But, a Brotherhood? Knights? I'm supposed to call you, what, Elder?"

"Words have power, Lizzy. They build identity. They take on a meaning if you keep using them, even if it didn't even exist to begin with. It was the Knights and Scribes after the fall of Rome that protected what was left of Western civilization. -So we are the new Knights, and our role is similar. But we'll need more than names. We'll need new traditions, our own, well... Mythology. Something people can believe to their core."

"I can't believe this... Bullshit..."

Amanda muttered.

"Is this even necessary?"

"What else can I do? Declare myself President? Make you a Senator? Look around. Something's killing us more than the rads and the freaks out there. Depression... People have lost everyone... Every goddam soul. Wives, kids, loved ones, heck even the mailman. We need to replace it with something, or otherwise people's souls will wither. -We'll be little more than walking dead men."

"I'll... I'll do my best to see the orders carried out. Sir."

"Give it time, Lizzy. People have a hunger to believe in something. Just let them work their way to it..."

Amanda let out a sigh. Then pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Well... That's all of it then. But... I do agree on Roger. He does have a point, though. And I'm agreeing with him, as a person with his opinion, not as Brotherhood Elder. Sure, we can't bring back the Old World. We have to build our own. Something we can call our own. You, on the other hand, got yours -Rebuilding what can be rebuilt... And isn't that something good? What people need to see other than purpose? That's something you can call, that you've built upon."

Nick's tone changed for some reason. Almost as if... He was a being aggressive by the mention on the middle parts of his statement. Amanda, instead of frowning... Looked confused. She raised an eyebrow.

"Nick... You seem to have taken it too seriously... Calm. Down..."

Amanda said. But she almost ended up sounding too soft.

Nick looked at her in surprise before immediately shaking his head in dismissal with a sigh.

"You're right. I got... Carried away."

"Are you sure you're all right?"

"Yeah. I'm fine. But I do agree on Roger's opinion. And I stand correctly by agreeing to him as a person to another. Anyways, if we're done here, let's blow this joint. I have some reconnaissance to do on Charleston..."

Amanda seem to have noticed Nick's tone to change. Especially on the quick change of subject. But Amanda didn't pressed on the matter. She just agreed by taking the other holotapes and notes on the table that Nick found them putting them on her inventory.

Nick walked out first, then Amanda followed suit in her power armor. She disliked the fact that Nick agreed to Roger Maxson. But that's his own opinion. But speaking of his own... Amanda picked up on a strange cue judging by his tone... Amanda felt strange... She felt... Concern. For Nick.

Amanda found a landing pad with a large 75th and thunder crest still recognizable before tossing out a flare grenade on the ground.

"Nick! Let's wait to vertibird here!"

Amanda called out and said and waited for Nick to approach her. She took note of his expression, though. Amanda frowned. She was indeed concerned for his sudden change of behavior. But she can't expect him to confide in her that easily. Amanda decided to erase the thought. She can't possibly care now. But on the other side of it... She does care for Nick... She just kept a secret that she trusts him after all.

"Hmm... 75th..."

Nick then spoke. Motioning at the insignia on the landing pad. A complete different subject, but indeed relevance the scenery.

"Taggerdy and her unit was former Army Rangers... Perhaps that could mean, 75th regiment."

Amanda decided to engage in the conversation.

"Makes sense."

Was only Nick's response. Amanda looked down at him. She studied his expression shortly before responding.

"Is there... Something bothering you?"

Nick looked at her shortly before gently smiling.

"I'm fine, Amanda. Let's just get back to the airport as soon as possible..."

Amanda didn't pressed further as she didn't have any spare time for something like, a little heart to heart talk with Nick. She never really had at least one time speaking to Nick in a civilised way... Unless she counts their first meeting...

The vertibird finally arrived to pick them up on the landing pad.

"So... What do you plan next?"

Amanda a heard Nick ask slowly, with a look of curiosity.

"I guess I'll see if I can spare a small detachment to secure this camp. But not for now, though... Need to remind ourselves not to be spread too thin. Especially when there is still a plague contained here..."

Amanda simply replied. But the conversation was almost too short on the way back to Morgantown Airport.

By the time they arrived, Nick immediately parted ways on a hurry before joining what Amanda recognized as a small team being deployed via vertibird. Amanda wanted to let her thoughts go along about Nick but suddenly remembered the holotapes and notes.

Amanda stopped in the maintenance station, before sitting next to her power armor and inspecting the holotapes. Two of which Nick found along with the notes. Amanda decided to play the first one.

"Marge. I keep recording these. Hoping one day I can make it home. I, found these Brotherhood of Steel guys outside of Grafton. Heard about them. Some weird military cult. And, seeing them in action... Made me... Remember when my unit would roll in like that. All shock and awe... Raiders didn't stand a chance. One of them, Knight Moreno, noticed me. Came over and chatted. Nice guy. Really made me rethink the stuff I've been told. It came out I was in the cavalry at Anchorage, and he said they had a place for me."

The voice was male. Although, sounding to be seemingly of age. Amanda felt strange from a part of the message. A Brotherhood of Steel that actually takes in outsiders? Although, it's understandable they will definitely take in this unknown person, just because he had a background from being and fighting on Anchorage, but still... This wasn't like the Midwestern Brotherhood of Steel... But... Were they? Amanda was confused.

"Marge... I'm sorry... I've made it maybe, 400 miles since the bombs. At this rate Texas might as well be a million miles further... I need... A unit. A place to belong. And I feel like... The Brotherhood may be it..."

By the time the message ended, Amanda's first reaction to it was wearing a sour expression on her face. But, she can't blame the man. Or, dead man... After all, these were from way back before, and shortly after the war... Everyone would've needed a place, or even purpose other than to stay alive. Maybe, Roger had a small point on that one. But overall, his plans became a bit too... Over his head, that it was not idealistic, but rather, a delusion, that lasted over two centuries. Amanda disliked that, but then decided to play the other holotape.

"Marge. It's been a couple of weeks. I've had three squares, showers, working lights... Camp Venture's got power, proper power, Marge. I'd feel almost human if it weren't for the Senior Knight and the training. I graduated basic easy back in the day, and I know I may be a bit softer... But... Wilson's an Army Ranger, or well, was one. And the drills they're making us do. But as beat up and worn out as I feel, that first time getting back into the 51b. You can call yourself Knight, Paladin, Grand Poobah of the Roman Empire, I don't care. Just don't take my power armor away. They're rushing training. A big battle with Super Mutants happening. Good. -I got some aggression I need to unleash..."

The message ended, with Amanda releasing a small sigh. Out of reluctance. These were more than enough proof for the Brotherhood's existence here on the east cost. Formed, or safe to say, co-founded by Roger Maxson, and Elizabeth Taggerdy. Amanda wasn't pleased. But that doesn't stop her from being a little concerned by the mention of Super Mutants. Nick just mentioned the same, only thing was Nick also mentioned Huntersville to where the source of Super Mutants were...

'Gonna have to solve that issue soon...'

Amanda thought to herself before moving on to the notes, she began to read the first one.

I remember the night we first arrived. Half frozen to death in the blizzard, teeth chattering. These cabins seemed like one of those resorts you'd see on the television.

Those were tough times, but these cabins were home. Some holes sprang in the roof, we'd get a bucket. A beam fells down, we'd prop it back up. But the Paladin says they're just too falling apart to keep fixing.

Its going to be cramped in the new space, but it'll be nice to have four good walls and a roof.

But I'll still miss my time in bunkhouse alpha.

Random note from a Brotherhood soldier, or possibly trainee. Or even from one of Taggerdy's unit, Amanda figured. She then moved on from the next note

I bide my time and bite my lip. I joined the service on my birthday, and it was the proudest day of my life when I became a Ranger. Almost as proud as I was to be tapped to be in Taggerdy's Thunder. And now... -Squires? Knights? Paladins? What the hell. I try not to roll my eyes. I try to never let my unit down. But sometimes on watch, I think about leaving.. Pick a direction... I think west..? Things got to be better out west... But I know too well what waits out there. So whatever stupid new rules comes out, I bite my lip and say whatever they want. But in my heart, I'm a Ranger and not even the Lieutenant can take that away from me.

Amanda found herself snickering, though mentally at least. At least she wasn't the only one that thinks of the Brotherhood's call-signs as something beyond stupid. But Amanda momentarily paused in silence. The Enclave has a Brotherhood of Steel of it's on now. The Midwestern Brotherhood of Steel. Such irony...

One more note, and two more holotapes. Amanda frowned, but deciding to get over with it, she proceeded to read the last of the notes.

Tommy. Knight Wilson says we're deploying tomorrow. Graduation's early. Fort Defiance needs men now, apparently...

I know you don't approve of my decision to come here. But everyone's got the Brotherhood wrong... -There's an army of Scorched in the Bog. It's not lies, and I've seen the Scorchbeasts with my own eyes. You should come, we need you...

It's hard to sleep knowing I'm heading in. Training's one thing, but we'll be fighting for real in days. Makes sense to me Defiance is the old Allegheny Asylum. Lord knows, we have to be crazy to go there.

I know it won't mean anything to you, Tommy, but Ad Victoriam. For all our sakes, Ad Victoriam...

-B

Amanda's heart skipped a beat. She recalled that one log entry on the Responders terminal. The Brotherhood were, if possible, to be the ones to have encountered the Scorchbeasts. And now, a mention of an army of Scorched in... The Bog..? Amanda thought that she'll have to have that located... God knows what she got herself into, and now she's above to risk lives of her soldiers... Is she really that willing just for the sake of those nukes?

But toggling on her map, Amanda found the said asylum. Allegheny Asylum. Or Fort Defiance...

'I'll have to send some recon team there... But first, I have to secure Venture. But don't rush it. Amanda...'

Amanda thought before deciding to play one of the two holotapes.

"Before the bombs, Generals told their troops that they served a higher purpose, and that they fought with honor. It was patriotic bullshit.

It led our best and most deserving into the slaughterhouse.

Never again... In this new world, a CO has a duty to treat each and every soldier's life under his command as sacred.

And if a soldier has to pay that final price, then there must be an accounting. In front of his brothers, his sisters, and his Elders.

Squire De Silva was a good soldier. A staunch ally who never flinched in the face of danger. She was an unwavering friend.

Her sacrifice will be remembered. This is our solemn duty to her.

Ad Victoriam."

It was Roger Maxson's voice. Giving some sort of eulogy for their fallen Squire. One of Taggerdy's unit. Amanda didn't seemed too interested. But instead of pondering, she then played the last holotape.

"Congratulations, Appalachia. Paladin Taggerdy told me of your victory at Huntersville. I know it was costly, but future generations will thank you. As I am thanking you now. It makes me proud. But that's not why I'm calling..."

Roger Maxson's voice spoke once again on the recorded message. Amanda listened closely for anything worth gathering as information.

"-One of the Brotherhood's standing orders is being on the look out for valuable technology. Anything that would help us in our efforts. But as I look in every direction I see chaos. The lights are out, and men have become little better than barbarians. Civilization. Civilization is something I think of every day. I know Lizzy's probably sick of the word by now..."

Amanda then felt disgusted on the next part. Technology... But trying to keep herself calm, she continued to listen as the message proceeded.

"To rebuild that. To reclaim that. Our successors are going to need the secrets of the past. And those secrets are in danger of slipping through our fingers forever. So far our Scribes have been tools to help protect our Knights and maintain our bases. That needs to change. The Brotherhood is going to be more than an armed fighting force, we're going to be guardians of civilization."

"Bullshit."

Amanda bitterly muttered. She just couldn't help herself...

"So we have to grab every schematic, every holotape, every book, and every goddamned note that holds the building blocks of the Old World before it's too late. Our Scribes will hold onto them, preserve them, perhaps even progress beyond them. And the Knights will protect them. Like a hard shell around a precious seed. One day, when the time is right, that seed will grow. And a new civilization will be born."

Amanda ultimately disliked the message. But, who's laughing now? Over two centuries later, the Brotherhood of Steel exists, and has expanded through different chapters. Different chapters with their own different ideologies. Amanda could only wonder how many chapters truly even exist to begin with...

"-This... This is why we were born, don't you see it? Helping your fellow man is a good goal, a soldier's goal. But this... We will be the catalyst that changes the world. I'm sure you have questions, Paladin Taggerdy is fully briefed. I have every faith in you, Appalachia. Elder Maxson out."

'Helping your fellow man is a good goal, a soldier's goal.' by now, Nick would've easily approved of that. But somehow... It stuck with Amanda. She was mixed with feelings that she couldn't even understand herself... Why was she being so soft, listening to messages, and reading letters of the dead... It's all making her act... Human... This whole damned region is making her act one... But, deny it as she bitterly frowned -Rebuilding what can be rebuilt is truly a part of her intention with the Enclave. She just needs to hold herself altogether as she does so... Then... Maybe, get back to her forgotten goal... To find-

"Commander! You are being requested to the communications center, ma'am!"

An officer immediately approached and reported, interrupting her from her thoughts. Amanda, was lost for a few seconds before even snapping back to reality.

Amanda gave a small nod before rushing her way to a larger tent that serves as communications center.

"Commander. Our airbase division in the Commonwealth were requested by the US Army to reach out to us. The General of the US Army wishes to speak to you, Ma'am. We've already established a frequency with the US Army, though, temporarily. Ma'am."

The communications officer immediately informed upon her entry.

"Is this a secured line?"

Amanda asked the question earned a crisp and a reply.

"Yes, ma'am. But only temporarily, as we've established the secured frequency directly to the US Army in the Commonwealth. Ma'am."

Amanda gave a small nod. Then taking a seat in front of a small mic and radio, Amanda wore a headset before speaking.

"This is Commander Amanda Amani speaking."

"Mrs. Amani? Oh, thank god... It's been a long while..."

It was General Ward who responded in a relieved tone.

"Russel. What is it you want."

Amanda responded, without the formality to use the rank of the US Army General. And clearly, she wasn't questioning either, but more of a demand.

There was sigh on the other end of the line shortly before a response.

"I want to thank you for the military aid. At first it was Patriot, who was directly supporting the US Army's cause but ever since he went MIA, I never expected you to be the one reporting us by this time. I want to formally thank you at least. -And to apologize for our last meeting-"

"I don't want to talk about that now, Russel. Right now, I am in the middle of dealing with a contained plague here on Appalachia just to secure three nukes. If you have anything better to say other than your thanks, then say it now."

Amanda immediately interrupted General Ward. Harshly. General Ward sighed on the other line once again.

"You still have my respects, Mrs. Amani. But other than my personal thanks to your military support -We have a problem here in the Commonwealth..."

"If it's the Brotherhood of Steel I'll deal with Maxson once I get back there in the Commonwealth. I don't want to hear any word about him and his men intervening with the presence of the Midwestern Brotherhood of Steel there in the Commonwealth. This is all for military reasons, and it is none of anyone's business. Unless this is about your issue with them because of technology."

"-I understand your perspective, Mrs. Amani. But we have already resolved the issue. The pre-war military equipment that were donated to us by the Enclave here are already resolved, and, with the Enclave reservists on standby, I've heard a word that they are now, we won't be worrying about the Brotherhood of Steel and Maxson. But that's not the problem... The problem is... We've recently received a random frequency that came from the Capital. This was two weeks ago. It was Enclave frequency... Now, I wasn't aware of recent events, but if I remember correctly, Lieutenant Wright and the Enclave, airbase division had the issue of an infiltration... And with the divisions here under command of Enclave field officers, I figured you'd be in DC. Until I recalled Lieutenant Wright has mentioned a synth, an Android created by the Institute with your face and name had almost compromised the Enclave... Worse, the US Army had a fair share of soldiers abducted along with Brotherhood personnel way recently."

Amanda was not surprised now. She was instead silently thinking of everything that General Ward had said. There's still a lose synth. A synth with her face, and name. And an Enclave...

"They're on DC. Russel. The Enclave is on DC. Not mine's... Is that what you're trying to say?"

Amanda suddenly said. There was a small pause from General Ward before he responded.

"I'm afraid so... Yes. Sergeant Peterson was the one that discovered the frequency while he was doing some maintenance on one of our relay towers. I do in fact have received a transcript sent by Sergeant Peterson and as gathered from the frequency, and I will send it to you now. What I read is something that may not surprise you, as I consider that you are already aware. But please. Mrs. Amani. Be careful out there... Russel Ward, out."

The line ended by the time General Ward finished. His tone sounded serious, but other than that... Horrified and mixed with concern

"The line with the US Army is no longer secured, Commander. And here on the control terminal, we've recieved a message. Transcripts, sent by General Ward."

The communications officer informed. Amanda approached over to the control terminal to find on the screen, was a listed following.

This wasn't in the Enclave format. Definitely not under her command... Amanda raised a brow in curiosity as she selected the first entry.

:::ENCLAVE_ADAMS_AIR_FORCE_BASE:::

:::Operation: Rivet City:::

Date: Error_Not_Found

Year: 2287

*Error*: Colonel *Error* has tasked us into clearing that rogue aircraft carrier ship aloft. Rivet City. Ain't gonna lie, but the Top wants us done within the next two days. Tops. We need to clear that city before we can use it as an outpost for our reservists. I've also got a dozen of men and scientists here on Adams ready for relocation to *Error*

That old *Error* base would be operational within the next week. Just need our maintenance crews focused getting those *Error* working and operational again.

Cody: Dammit... We need more time. Two days isn't enough... Plus, we still have to worry about the Brotherhood of Steel.

*Error*: We've got our best troops ready for dispatch and under your command, Commander. Your objective is to sweep in, and gather the citizens. Transport them to *Error*

The science labs are already functional there despite its schedule to be fully operational within the next week. Our men and scientists here on Adams are moving in there shortly, but we need those citizens. The eggheads are now itching on getting their Modified *Error* Project done as demanded by Colonel *Error* But they need more subjects for further testing first...

I've also got a word from our asset. X6-88. He's reported that they've already gotten sights of the Brotherhood patrols. A team will be dispatched to apprehend them, and the rest will be handled by X6-88 and his G-man team from the *Error* I don't like those freaks, but they sure get the job done.

Cody: Understood. But, sir. Heavy resistance is to be expected on Rivet City. It will risk gaining Brotherhood attention. Especially GNR.

*Error*: Cody. Why do you think we have the Secret Service then? You have you and your men's asses under covered. Gather your men, Commander. You are moving out. On the double!

Cody: *Sighs* Sir. Yes, sir...

Amanda turned to the communications officer and spoke.

"Can you fix the errors on some parts of the entry?"

"I believe I cannot, Commander. It would seem the frequency that the US Army got from DC wasn't too strong enough for their equipment to manage reformatting the final transcripts. I can at least do the same and fully reformat the transcripts, but that is only if we received that frequency from DC. Ma'am."

Amanda mentally frowned but gave a small nod, and then turned her attention to the next entry. This one got Amanda's full attention.

Colonel *Error*: Status on report Alaska.

*Error*: Colonel. Our fellow remnants there have fully shut us down. They've long ceased any possible frequencies for us to reach out to them... And it appears that their full allegiance is in within this 'Commander Amanda'... Much like the Enclave forces in the Commonwealth that you've tried gathering into our ranks, all thanks to that piece of tin can power armor...

Colonel. I fear that with their forces expanding, and gaining more Governmental influences and power than we do -We may have to deal with a possible civil conflict in the future within out great Government. Ma'am.

Colonel *Error*: *Sighs* And that's supposed to threaten me? Let them get all the attention all they want. As for Alaska, we only needed them for their resources. Their numbers are only so much as the US Army in the Commonwealth. They're completely useless. But since they fully sided themselves into the other side of our Government, then that is fine by me. We still have the other remnants on the far north to reach out to in the future. But leave all of that behind for now, Major. Our forces are here on the Capital now. If we are to rebuild our great nation back to it's feet... We will start here, on our Nation's very own Capital.

?: But, Colonel. The Enclave, even if it's ready to take on the Brotherhood of Steel, is still not fully aware of what the opposing side of our Government plans...

Colonel *Error*: We know they're on Appalachia. A ruined, and abandoned Commonwealth here on our nation. Let them waste their time there, while we bide ours in here. Like our previous, failure President once said "The path to freedom is through eternal vigilance." We are the United States Government. And that is the right thing for us to do. Only this time... We will be successful. And if... The Enclave... Does get in our way, which we're eventually headed there -We will have to neutralize them, among the abominations littering on our great nation.

?: We can't hope for the best, Colonel.

Colonel *Error*: We don't need to. Because we ARE the hope itself. Our country is dying, Major. Our very great nation itself is dying everyday. And it is our solemn duty to restore it. By any means necessary, and through force, if needed. One Enclave. One America...

Amanda's skin slightly paled. Oh shit...

"Send a message to Alaska. I want our people there to be informed. And send a fleet of vertibirds there to be on standby as well, just in case they need to be evacuated..."

Amanda finally ordered to which the communications officer crisply nodded.

"Yes, Commander! Right away!"

Amanda sat in front of the control terminal and reread the whole transcript once more. She just have had to worry about the Scorchbeasts and the Scorched plague. Now... This? Amanda closed her eyes and rubbed her temples... She feels so alone in this...

'Can I handle this anymore? My people... They need me... But they follow the ideals... That's good. The Enclave's ideals... I just have to keep them all safe.. Even if it means turning down everyone around me... God... Amanda. Stay strong. Stay focused... Damn the Institute...'

Opening her eyes, she decided to read the last entry. This was worrying for her. For the Enclave's reputation... But she needs to know what she can...

Cody: This is Commander Cody. 92th regiment. Second battalion. Service number: 011347827.

I am sending this report message to the Top about our successful operation here on Rivet City. We have managed to gather the majority of it's citizens, but heavy resistance has occurred as expected. Thankfully, our brothers in the Secret Service made quick work of the resistance. This, concluding a successful operation.

But in due and further importance to this report is that we've lost sight of a straggler. One of our men has spotted an escapee during the operation. Armed.

Colonel *Error* One of our soldiers has given full description of the straggler. We've already sent a team to pick him off. But you would not believe who the straggler was, ma'am.

Based on the full description given by our soldier, it matches the full description of former Enclave *Error* who was in charge of the Enclave personnel at 'Raven Rock' ten years ago.

We have a deserter, Colonel. But I will report back once I've got any further news regarding this sensitive topic. Cody out.

Amanda's eyes widened in surprise. This got her attention the most. But, she didn't want to pick pocket who the subject was being referred on... Instead, Amanda stood up and turned to the communications officer.

"I want to have a word with the commanders on Alaska as soon as possible. But also send a memo, and send forth the transcripts to the Enclave divisions in the Commonwealth as well. We are not to keep this information private within outranks. Everyone of us has to know about this. And to be aware of what's partially happening in the Capital.

"Yes, Commander!"

Amanda then left the communications tent. She was disturbed. The deserter wasn't a problem for her. But the Enclave... In the Capital... Amanda could only wonder what they plot... What that Colonel plot. She didn't needed to clarify if it's the Colonel or not... The entirety of the transcripts were enough... But first things first. She has to focus on Appalachia. The Scorched plague, the Scorched, and mostly, the Scorchbeasts... Then the nukes... And then... Deal with this... Enclave.

"Commander. I am very happy to see you again, Ma'am."

Amanda heard a very familiar voice from behind. Male, but the voice of an AI. She spun around to see a newly arrived fleet. A small arrived fleet of Enclave vertibirds and more Enclave personnel filing out. But in front of her green eyes, was a newly plated X01 power armor with Tesla modifications.

Amanda hated this. But... She smiled. She smiled as she approached the towering power armor. She had never been so relieved like this...

"Patriot."

Cool. A little reunion.

This is still focused on Appalachia by the way, but if you are reading 'The Fallen Flag' please keep in mind that the events on that story takes place a little earlier than this current ongoing story here right now.

Fun fact: that holotape about Maxson's eulogy for Squire De Silva, was supposed to be a note like in FO:76. Although it was originally intended to be a holotape with Roger Maxson speaking in honors to the fallen Squire, but I decided to implement the holotape take either way.

That said, I'll see you all in the next chapter.
