Author's Note- Superboy, like any good best friend, is hijacking Tim's story for this chapter. There are three prompts (two of the three featuring his best friend) that Kon snuck into this story!
Prompt 1: Supergirl V Superboy/Their First Meeting
Kara grimaced, falling backwards through the air as Dante came around the corner of a building and slammed his shoulder into her. The coward kept running and ducking just to attack her from the side, too afraid to straight up fight her. Supergirl threw her arm out to grab ahold of him, so she could give him a deserving pounding. He curled forward just out of her grip, his metal wing scraping her cheek.
"For crying out loud," She huffed.
"Haha!" He taunted ducking back around a building. She charged around it, trying to pick up speed against him. If she could just get a solid grip on him this would be over already… he zagged around another corner and she pulled up short, cape twisting around in front of her for a moment as she looked for where he'd disappeared to.
It gave her a moment to pause. She needed to rethink this, instead of getting trapped in this little game. Dante died, in his Hell Realm. So she wasn't dealing with Dante or his mind controlling monkey demons… no, this had to be something else.
She'd been shopping, for god's sake. Kara had come to visit Kal for the weekend but he was suddenly called off to see to some matter for the League. He took it very seriously, and in the years since it's founding Kara had to admit it had done him- and the world of course- a lot of good.
So she decided to go out and do some Metropolis shopping… which, like most things in her personal life, took a back seat when some wacko began attacking a nearby port. Soon her bags were being exchanged for the air as she'd spotted a fight from afar. Problem being by the time she dawned her suit an explosion threw tons of water up from the bay and she'd only seen 'Dante' ten minutes after, trying to fly towards the center of the city.
She'd caught up to him on the edge of a skyscraper hotel along the coast of the water and they'd been fighting since. Whoever this was, they weren't used to using the wings the way Dante had been and Supergirl could use that to her own advantage.
She heard the air parting behind her just in time to avoid the fist he'd aimed her way. Right, she just needed to rethink this. With a grin Supergirl dropped down, letting Terra's gravity do the work for her she fell a few stories. He came down towards her as she expected and Supergirl suddenly pushed herself up against the pull of gravity and flung her body upwards.
'Dante' tried to stop short, but she'd been right to think he wasn't used to flying because he couldn't stop himself in time. Instead he ran straight into her fist. He let out a cry and she rushed forward with her advantage, fist colliding squarely with his jaw again.
He hit the side of the building, falling towards the ground too fast.
"Gottcha," She murmured in success, diving downward to catch him. A blue and black object collided with Dante before she could reach the man, making her stop short and curve upwards to try and find what happened.
Or who.
Supergirl found her answer, on a flat rooftop, only twenty stories up and hidden around the edge of another building. She found a young boy, tall for his age, dark hair and a uniform that was hard to mistake, despite that it was soaking wet. The House of El. The family coat of arms… under a leather jacket and a boy much younger than Kal would be.
It dawned on her quickly, this must be Superboy, or 'The Kid', as she heard the media retelling. Ms. Grant wasn't his biggest fan, but Kara had seen him with her cousin, so she didn't investigate. That didn't stop her from wondering. Now, apparently, she wasn't going to need to.
"I had wondered when we'd cross paths," Kara called from above him and the villain who had now morphed back into his original form. She recognized the Everyday man now. That caught Superboy's attention and he whipped around from where he'd pinned their foe. For a moment he blinked up at her in shock, before he came up with a nonchalance shrug. "Or if Kal-El would introduce us." She added with a knowing look.
"Yeah," The boy called, it sounded more a question to her, but he didn't elaborate. He looked around, pointedly not at her before calling up to her. "Well he's busy."
"Is that why you're here?" She asked curiously, lowered herself slowly onto the rooftop.
"I watch over the city when he's out of the galaxy," The boy said, grinning. Kara laughed softly, and gestured up with her head. She felt a homesickness talking about being so much farther than the milky way. It didn't matter, Krypton was nothing more than asteroids and dust now.
"I think the skirmish is near Pluto," She looked back to the boy, and gave him a little test.
"Close enough," He shrugged, and looked a little nervous despite his tough facade. He finally glanced up at her and Kara tilted her head to look at him better.
"I'm Supergirl," She introduced when he made no move to do so himself. He muttered an 'I know' but she pushed on. "And you?" She prompted.
"Kon-El," He stated, head held high, with no subtly in the pride that came from his voice.
"A Kryptonian name," She pointed out, growing more curious, and just a tad cautious. Maybe over cautious... Kal-El wouldn't have himself be duped by anything silly.
"I'm his brother," The boy said, just as proud, if not a little less sure of the statement.
"Interesting… Jor and Lara Lor never had a second son," She didn't say it as an accusation, family was more than blood of course, but the Kryptonian name? He must be from Earth… she would have known if anyone from her home world had become present here and Kal-El would not hold that sort of information off. No, she suspected it was a much more personal matter. Maybe Kal was nervous to tell her about, or wasn't sure the right way. Well, her Aunt and Uncle's names would be a sufficient test.
"You're from… Krypton, right?" He asked his first question almost hesitantly. "You were there when…?"
"Just before... but yes, that was my home," She explained patiently. For this she could find patience. It was easier as Kara softened watching as he fidgeted with the buckle on his jacket and averted his gaze again. Something about how nervous he was took away her suspicions. This must be someone Kal was trying to help, took under his wing. Nothing to do with Krypton really, but anyone who needed a home… she could understand why Kal would bring someone in that way.
"I wasn't born there…" He muttered, but he couldn't lie to Supergirl. Someone who was… from there.
"I know," She smiled. "So how do you relate to Kal-El, brother of Krypton?" She said it that way so she didn't seem rude, or demeaning of Kal's choice to call him that. The boy perked up considerably, shoulders straightened and a lightness to his blue eyes that reminded her so much of Kal's. "Where do you draw your strength from, if not from the yellow sun?"
"Well I have a tactile telekinesis and it pretty much covers the bases," He rushed to assured. Kara smiled again.
"Well you sure did well enough against him," She pointed out, and gestured to the unconscious man.
"Yeah, well if he hadn't morphed with the wings so suddenly I wouldna fallen into the bay," Kon grumbled, glancing at the water as if it had assaulted him. Kara laughed. "But uh, I'm as Kryptonian as possible," He explained, growing nervous again. She tilted her head, curious again, because that didn't really make much sense. Kon-El had stuffed his hands into his pockets and was trying to explain more.
"The super strength, speed, indestructible, that sort of thing is all part of my tactile telekinesis, but not everything. I guess it's because, technically I'm his clone but I think it's…."
Nothing else went in, she couldn't hear his words even though he'd continued talking. Horror washed over her… and fear. It made her tremble, her heartbeat racing along with her thoughts. That Kal- with his big, wonderful heart- didn't understand. That this boy didn't understand… he'd already let him too close! Questions raced through her mind, how old was he? Had he been here long? When was he created and how had they stabilized his genetics?
Kara gasped, her native tongue falling from her lips for the first time in many years on Earth. Kara tried to breath, think it through but she looked at the boy again with their symbol on his chest and she shivered.
She… Kara had to do something. Her father's words seemed to fall over her ears like a screeching warning. About how dangerous clones were… completely forbidden on Krypton and she remembered the biggest trial in Argon city in decades when that man… so many people had died, when the clone inevitably went mad and started to kill in central plaza….
"But Father, if he thinks like us, then why wouldn't they help him? Isn't he then a person?"
"It's not a question of ethics, it's a question of science. He'd gone mad already, Kara. You must not think in that way. Clones are never stable, daughter, no matter how long they appear they will be. From the moment they're created their genetic code is breaking down, slowly unraveling. It is only ever a matter of time before they become dangerous to everyone they're put near."
"I understand," She muttered, sighing at the holo-news again. She didn't have to like it though.
"I understand," Kara repeated, voice turning steely as she took in a calming breath and turned her eyes up towards the boy- clone approaching her. Hundreds of innocents had been slaughtered on Krypton that day… clones were unnaturally strong on Krypton, why not here? She couldn't let Kal be hurt.
Her eyes began to glow, and in an instant her heat vision hit the clone in front of her with full force, it threw him backwards off of the rooftop. She jumped into the air, turning at a ninty-degree angle to speed towards the falling boy, flailing for a catch in the air. Kara caught up before he could and threw her fist with as much strength as she had into his chest.
They both landed on the ground, digging a deep hole into the cement.
"What the frick!" Kon exclaimed, gasping for the air that Supergirl had just slammed out of him. He grasped out for the ragged cement, and tried to pull himself up out of the hole as she flew up off him. Was this some sort of initiation crap? She'd gone from pretty cool, to flipping crazy in half a second.
Before he could crawl out of the hole, he felt the searing heat from her heat vision again. Kon fell backwards, grimacing at the pain in his chest, thankful he did have Superman's durability.
"Stand down!" The girl demanded, as the beam stopped digging him deeper into the cement. Kon didn't bother with climbing out, instead he got his feet underneath him and bent his knees to get enough leverage to throw himself into the air. It surprised her, he hoped. He didn't take the time to look and charged with his momentum to slam his fist into her chest. If she wanted a fight, he'd give it to her!
Unfortunately, she staggered, but that was it before she whipped forward and her fist threw his way again. He threw his hand out to catch it, eyes narrowing angrily at the girl who was supposed to be Clark's cousin. His usual move didn't work, as she started to overpower him, he dug his heels into the pavement and grabbed her hand with his other hand, grimacing.
"Don't make me hurt you," She growled out.
"Don't flatter yourself!" He roared, throwing his leg up to knee her in the stomach. It broke their hold and she was tossed backwards into the building. She recovered quickly, and flew towards him getting a hit across the head that stung. She was definitely as strong as Superman right now, and unfortunately she wasn't holding back…
They traded punches, not gaining much ground. All he knew was he was getting his butt handed to him. Nerts… this had to be why Superman never introduced them. Supergirl wasn't exactly living up to the ambassador of good will ideal she liked to project, now was she? What? Did she think he wasn't good enough of something, because he'd said he was a clone?
Well he'd show her!
Kon got back up, charging forward with a roar. His fist curled, jumping into the air to drop down on her. Before he landed, she changed tactics and just as he was about to hit her, her eyes glazed over red and he felt the stinging of her heat vision again. Kon hit something hard and that was really all he remembered. He'd tried to stand up against the blinding heat ray, but it was suddenly broken off by… something. He'd seen someone standing over him before he blacked out.
...
He stifled back a groan, as he slowly came to. He could hear voices… familiar voices… it was Clark…. there was shouting he only heard half of what was going on around him.
"Kara this just isn't like you!"
"You don't understand Kal!"
He shook his head, hearing going wonky for a minute as he struggled to sit up. Kon ached all over, and as he raised his hand he could feel a tender spot on his head. Wow… nothing had really hurt him like this before…
"I understand the prejudice, I do." That was Clark, although he couldn't see where he was. Clearly Supergirl was here, too as her voice, pitched high, came up over his.
"It's not just a prejudice, it's scientific fact. It's not a great thing to hear, but clones… they go mad, it's a matter of time and I don't want you…"
Her words hit harder than her fists, Kon stumbled up from the bed, boots feeling slick under him. Whether it was from being whoozy or just the floors of the fortress of solitude, where he realized he was.
"Even if this was true, and it's not, was he able to beat you? No, he wasn't, so he's not any harm to me Kara! That's no excuse to…"
"You don't get it, when they go unstable their powers grow immensely!"
"Him," Clark insisted. His stomach curled up, and Kon was about to throw up. He didn't care what anyone thought about him being a clone, he never had. It just… what she was saying, she was from Krypton, what if she was right? Was Clark hiding all this from him, had Cadmus? A scowl fixed on his face as he pushed his way into the room.
"Is what she's saying true?" He asked sternly, eyes hardening but he couldn't look at either of them.
"Kon-El, it's not-"
"Yes," Supergirl said firmly.
He looked down at his hands, swallowing tightly as he imagined now he understood why he'd been giving a beaten. "If that's true…" He muttered, feeling cold inside.
"No," Clark said firmly his loud voice booming around the fortress. Conner didn't look up at him, guilt falling on his shoulders heavily. What did that even mean, he was himself he always had been. He'd never gone crazy or even acted outside of his own decisions. So… why was he even taking what she said into consideration? Well, hadn't he told her… Cadmus tried to make him as Kryptonian as possible. Did that mean what she said was true of him?
No! It was ridiuclous. Kon had proven time and again he was a person despite anything else. She wasn't talking about being a person, though...
"You weren't… Kara he's not a clone from Krypton. We're just not as advanced here. He's half human, and he's more than a clone," Clark stated firmly, silencing the girl standing next to him. Kon smiled slightly at his mentor, looking down at the uniform he had on, shredded from the fight with Supergirl. Of course that was true! He was who he was, and he wasn't going to let anyone, not even Supergirl, say otherwise. Apparently neither was Clark.
After what felt like forever, Supergirl turned to Kon and sighed.
"Then I apologize," She stated, shaking her head. "I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions."
Conner smiled and shrugged it off. Well, whatever, it wasn't like he cared anyways. He was glad she was accepting this, because he was who he was, he was Superbly and nobody was stopping that. Kon looked towards the 'S' that was carved into the ice. He was part of this… that's what he'd been working towards, and this other… reality, or option… it shook him a little bit. Not enough to let him think too long on it, because as far as he was concerned Supergirl was just wrong. Hopefully she got on board, if she didn't well, then tough.
When Superman set his hand on Kon's shoulder and shook him, he couldn't help but look up with a little hope.
"She is wrong, Kon-El, you have to trust me on this."
He looked up earnestly and nodded. "I do," He promised, he trusted him with everything he had in him. So he'd put it out of his head… but, well he just had to trust him. Like he'd said.
"Hey… can we start over?" Supergirl called, clearing her throat awkwardly and stepping up to him. He glanced between them and nodded to her. Clark's grin was a little contagious and Conner tried not to look bitterly towards her. "I am Kara Zor-El… it's good to meet you, Superboy."
He grinned a little, taking her extended hand and shaking it. Yeah… whatever his future may or may not hold… he knew who he was today. He was part of this… and he'd do everything he could to always be that way.
Prompt 2: A scene from Young Justice
"Alright that was light security," Kon muttered, wandering slowly through the darkened hallways as the two passed through the doorway.
"I've lost the comm feed with Robin," Wonder Girl said from next to him. Kon tensed, waiting for the other shoe to drop, something was way off here. Why suddenly no security? Well it was Gotham… maybe that was all this building could afford? It seemed like a real dumpy part of town.
"It's definitely not right…."
"You can say that again," He muttered, jumping as suddenly lights on a computer displays jumped to life all around them. Next thing he knew Kon was being thrown onto the floor from a blow to the back of his head. He heard another whump next to him and saw Wonder Girl picking herself up off the floor.
"Found the trouble," He muttered to her before whirling up to sling his arm into the guys who attacked them. His eyes grew wider as his fist collided with a statue and it crumbled beneath his fist. "Wha the…." He uttered, as suddenly the grotesque gargoyle statues that had apparently lined the top of the room were suddenly swooping down and flying at them!
"Now the carvings on the buildings are coming to life?!" He shouted, jumping back before letting it fly and breaking the head into pieces. It crumbled just as easily, but before he could take a breath another one was around him and Wonder Girl next to him was in the same predicament.
In fact, they were completely surrounded. He couldn't hit them fast enough before more were piling on him, two at a time!
"We come here looking for information on some sort of weird connection Batgirl found, and all this happens? What the heck is going on around here?!"
"Unfortunately, I don't think we're being given a lot of time to figure it out!" He heard Wonder-Girl grunt from next to him as she was pummeled with three on her. Superboy swung a left hook into the one attacking his arm, but by the time he turned to help her, Wondy was springing up from the pile of them, bits of rocks showering around them.
"They keep comin'! Where are they coming from?! This is nuts!" He called as she circled in closer to him so they wouldn't get pushed separated by the things. They stood a better chance this way, he was sure glad she came on this one, he didn't have to worry about anything, she could give as much as they gave.
"Yeah… maybe or maybe it's something else!" She shouted and he turned to look at her for a surprised moment. "Superboy! Drop your tactile whatsis! Don't defend yourself!"
Amazonian babe say what? His eyebrows flew up and he gave her a questioning look. It uh, wasn't a great plan there… his tactile telekinesis was what gave him Superman's invulnerability! It was pretty much the same thing, just worked a little differently. Clone problems, he was just sort of surprised she knew that's what it was. Sure he told everyone who would listen, his claim of independence in a way… but no one really picked it up. Superboy just told himself it was a complicated subject. But, well, if she knew all that….
"Oookay, if you're sure," He spoke, mostly unconvinced. She nodded, eyes sparking determinedly and he shrugged before dropping the TK. As he kind of suspected, the gargoyle in front of him clawed at him hard in the arm and the next hit, to his jaw, threw him up and backwards through the air.
He landed with a hard thump and groaned before slipping his TK back on.
"What was that supposed to prove?" He groused as she flew up and landed in front of him. Besides that these things hit hella hard to launch him that far back! He might as well have hit himself!
"Check for damage! He pasted you square in the face, and you don't have a scratch!"
He took a minute to access that and… and… well, she was right! His arm didn't hurt and he wasn't feeling a thing except that he'd landed a bit hard! That was impossible, there should be some sort of scratch on his arm!
"You're right! Not even a mild sting!"
A grin spread over his face, mirroring the one on Wonder Girl's.
"You imagined he hit you, and flew backwards. But nothing really came in contact with you. They're not really there!"
"Nicely played, Wondy. Brains and looks." He grinned more as he stood up. Damn, he would have never figured that out, just kept punching his way through them. Good thing she figured it out for them so he didn't have to worry about it anymore, did he?
"Well, I just noticed that I wasn't getting especially banged up. So I figured I'd test a theory."
He got distracted from the rest of her sentence as his comm finally pinged, he heard a scratchy voice barely getting through. It was Robin's voice, though.
"I picked up your traces - ey're faint at best. Some- is definitely there, it's probably- blocking me. -need that fee- on now!"
"Alright hold on, we'll get it on somehow," He responded into the device, hoping his friend heard even half of what he'd said. They both took off, booking it through the gargoyles still throwing themselves at the two. They weren't really there, Kin reminded himself, so they just ran straight through them.
Something just occurred to him.
"Hey Wondy… how come you decided to have me take the hit to test your theory?" He asked as they started up the stairs to the next floor of the massive warehouse.
"Well… I wasn't that sure."
"You-?"
He paused, quieting as he realized she'd used him as bait. Well, well, well…. She looked nervous at him and he couldn't hold back his sudden, impressed grin. He didn't know she had it in her. "Heh. You're a piece of work alright."
"Thanks. I guess?" She coughed slightly and he smiled again at her before they both took the stairs two at a time, rounding up the top.
As soon as they reached the middle section of the stairs leading away from the light of the large room, the fake statues throwing themselves at the two instantly disappeared. Something was projecting them in that room, but there was no time to figure it out. Robin was in their ears again telling them it had to be on the roof to get a signal with that much range. Or, that was the gist of it anyways.
Kon pushed open the hatch door as they got to the top and jumped up through the opening, turning to give Wonder-Girl a hand when he heard the cock of a gun. He smirked, pulling her up through the opening, not hearing her hushed thanks as he turned to the fake.
"Okay no more illusions." He shouted to whoever was controlling this. The bang even echoed so realistically. But then it impacted square in his chest, and like all bullets, pinged right off of him. Except it didn't just fade away, instead it crashed into a monitor to his left and the screen shattered.
He looked over at Wondy.
"Uh oh, no… that one, I think was real."
"Yikes."
Real or not! It didn't matter! He'd take them all down either way, he was just fine having something real to fight! Good thing, too, because all that security they were wondering about was up here. They didn't get quite as close as the fake statues but they were putting up one hell of a fight.
"C'mon bring it! I can keep this up all day!"
"Yeah, but why would you want to?!" Wondy called and he shrugged, well they didn't have a choice here! She stepped back and he jumped up before launching forward, in a half fly and took three down with a sweep of his arms.
"Superboy! I need you to take that down!" She called from between knocking a guy off his feet. In the bad, literal way at that. He glanced at it, but wasn't hesitant to fly forward and barrel his way through it head first. He trusted her. Wondy had been right before and she'd be right now.
The wall began to crumble and he flew back quickly to where Wonder Girl had taken a plank and swept the front assault of men backwards, just as the wall fell downward, showering the air with dust and debris. He dropped suddenly from flight, landing awkwardly. Thankfully, the rise of debris hid it well. He turned and spotted the blonde hair of his teammate and they ran away from it, coughing slightly from the dust.
"How'd you know that wouldn't bring the whole building down?" He asked curiously as they took the last set of stairs up towards their destination.
"Well, it's not load bearing…"
"Uh, yeah, duh," He chuckled, how she knew that… well he had no idea!
"Um, well no, my Mom deals with a lot of old buildings is all, I picked some stuff up." She explained in that hurried, nervous way. His lip curled up in a small smile.
"Makes sense."
The room they entered was the end of the line, a bunch of computers were set up but nothing like they were looking for. Not that Kon knew exactly what that was but… he felt like he'd see it. They had to be close though because they weren't even getting scratchy feed from their comms. Just silence. He could trash all the computers but they couldn't be what was blocking Robin's signal.
"You hear that?" Wonder Girl stopped him with a hand on his arm and he stilled.
"What? The guys shouting below or the buzzing?"
"The buzzing… it's coming from up there." She pointed upward and motioned a few times. They tossed the window open and the buzzing got much louder. Wonder Girl went first and then Superboy followed as they flew out and up towards the roof. There was a huge satellite dish, obviously too big and flashy for it to be part of the equipment below.
"There. I'll betcha that thing is the source of Robin's communication problems." She said triumphantly, and he pushed up the sleeves of his jacket with a smirk her way.
"I'll take a piece of that action, Wondy! Let's take it down!"
She shot forward and he launched off the rooftop to get maximum speed, headed to the break it into a hundred tiny pieces. Before they reached it, they impacted into something invisible and bounced back, hard.
"Ouch," Wondy huffed from besides him as they both approached it slower. He pounded away at it, and Wonder-Girl shouted to him as she backed up as far on the room as she could and then zoomed back towards it. "Unh!" She groaned as she somersaulted in the air, being thrown back again.
Kon continued to pound at it with each arm in turn, but was only wearing himself out.
"There's some kind of force field. Arrgghh, I can't break through it…!" He panted.
Wonder Girl landed next to him and he stopped for a moment as she stared up at him, an expression on her face he'd never seen before….. She smiled at him then.
"Oh… oh yes," She backed up and raised her fists, nodding towards him and then it. He gave her an odd look before he got what she was saying as she flew up in the air and motioned for him to follow. "We... can!"
"Alright…" A silly smile plastered on his face and Kon focused on getting up to her height. Once there he grabbed her hand, locking them together. Squeezing down tight, her grip just as sure, they flew backwards before throwing themselves forward, one fist out each to maximize the impact they'd give in one central location….
...And they were through!
"Whoo!" He cheered, turning to see her laugh a little and sweep her hair back away from her face. Kon smiled again at her before something crackled in both their ears and they let go of one another quickly.
"'And I'm back! Great job guys!"
Yeah…. Kon didn't think he'd ever worked that well with someone before. Their powers just sort of… really complimented each others. Since then… since they'd ended up together there he felt kind of… they'd been kind of…. Well, almost playful since then. No… comfortable, that was the right word. Yeah… comfortable was it.
"Hello? Con?"
"Wha?" He blinked out of his thoughts, reaching up to bat away Tim's hand as he waved it in front of him. His friend laughed shortly and raised his eyebrows.
"What's with that look?"
"What look?"
"The one you were just making."
"How should I know!"
"Well you were thinking about someone."
"What do you even know?" He snarked, snatching up his cup and grumbling under his breath.
"Detective, remember?" Tim sipped at his tea before he leaned back. Kon massively rolled his eyes, letting him know what he thought of that. Riiiiiight, whatever! Good! Let him talk about that. Maybe he'd stop harassing Kon. Not everyone wanted to talk about their feelings like Tim did. Geez, he oughta know that by now! Some best friend he was!
"How's everything in Gotham? Getting a hard time for doing Young Justice?" Kon asked to distract Tim.
"Not really," Tim shrugged. "I'm keeping up on our nightly patrols when I'm not with you guys, and I've been getting most of my school work done in the mornings. So I've got a routine worked out."
"Psh, school work? You're such a nerd, Tim," Kon laughed. Whew, was he glad he didn't do the school thing anymore, how he ever thought it was a good idea… well he wasn't sure! He was amazed that Tim seemed to "But I think you're forgetting one thing," He said, mock serious.
"What's that?" Tim asked, frowning a bit.
"Sleep!" He laughed and Tim shook his head. "Who needs sleep anyways."
"Everybody," Kon snorted.
"Hey, bats are nocturnal, remember?" Tim grinned, like there was some private joke there. Kon shook his head.
"How do you manage to keep a girlfriend?" He teased Tim.
"Mostly because Steph's amazing," Tim smiled to himself. "Also, she can also appreciate being nocturnal, of course."
Kon snorted. "Alright!" He shrugged with both hands before dropping back in the seat. He knew well enough that that was just how the Batclan operated. "I never understand you guys."
Tim laughed then, and Kon smirked his way. Well that was honest out of him!
"I think you're all just crazy." He continued.
"We probably are," Tim grinned his way before giving Kon a look to stop the conversation. He glanced around and noticed the waitress approaching them. Ah right, secrecy above all! The Bat Clan way! He snorted to himself as Tim ordered some more tea and he ordered some food.
"What are you doing outside of the team?" Tim asked politely.
"Not much," He shrugged. "Someone's usually there, so you've all been taking up most of my attention."
He was pretending to complain about it but… well the last couple of weeks Wondy was there almost as much as him. Bart had gotten busy helping out somebody, and Tim came through on his clockwork schedule, but the girls seemed to be there more often after school. Wonder Girl and him had even started watching this hilarious show that came on around the time they usually showed up to get some practice in or see what happened during the day.
They'd taken to sparring, too. Well, since their powers worked so well together anyways. She was quick in the air. Strong too, also gorgeous… determined… and even though she seemed so nervous and self conscious in the beginning and when they weren't in a fight… damn the second things got serious she was so self-possessed. He didn't know how to describe it but there was a steadiness that he hadn't seen before. It looked more natural on her than the flickering glances and the shyness. He'd seen it a few times, when she'd speak up on a problem, some brainy solution, or find a clever alternative no one expected out of the girl trying to stay out of everyone else's way. She really was smart under all that hiding. How did he not notice before?
"There's that look again." Tim crooned mockingly.
"Would you stop it with that! I don't have a look, this is my face, its how I look." He rebuffed.
"Oh, there's a look." Tim scoffed.
"Tim," He ground out, narrowing his eyes.
"Yeah Con?" Tim responded with a note of innocence, ugh! He pulled it off too.
"There's no look!"
"Whose talking about a look?"
At this point he was just trying to make fun of him. Kon shot him another look and Tim gently eased his hands up in surrender.
"Okay, there's no look… but it doesn't take a genius to figure it out and I approve, that's all I'm saying!"
"Tim!" He shouted, jumping up as his friend darted out of the way towards the host stand to pretend to need a menu.
Kon huffed and sat back down, rolling his eyes again. Oh what did he know anyways! Boy detective and all, or was that the other one? Oh who knew! He better just drop it… but just as Tim was returning with extra silverware the busboy was showing up with his food and Kon got distracted from the whole conversation. Well, of course he would approve, what wasn't there to like?
Prompt 3: Conner dealing with his upgraded powers
It was quiet for miles around, not that he could hear for miles around. The super hearing seemed to disappear as quickly as it had come. Although when Uncle John got the tractor running a week ago it decided to kick in then, of course. Conner hadn't jumped out of bed so quickly in his life. Or been so eager to go to town for Aunt Martha's grocery list at any rate. Man, his life had gotten boring. From beating down super powered trouble starters every day to making sure the crop was doing fine and cleaning barns. It was almost as hard to stomach as having a secret identity. Not that he did anything with 'Connor Kent', he couldn't do school like the Kent's wanted when he'd randomly burst into flight or suddenly have super hearing.
Which, was definitely not working today. It took Connor a minute to come out of his thoughts and realize Krypto was barking his tail off. What was his deal? Conner pushed up off his elbows and looked across the rocky driveway that led up to the front porch he'd been lounging around on.
There, he saw Krypto running along the fence at someone stepping out of a taxi. Okay, maybe not unnecessary then. He wasn't barking at a bird again. Wait, a taxi? There were no taxi's around here, not even in the closest two towns! It wasn't until he stood up off the porch and the figure grew closer he recognized the tossed unruly jet black hair. Boy Wonder? Rather Boy Billionaire, of course there was a taxi.
"What are you doing here?" Conner called out his question as he eyed the other boy warily, crossing his arms at the familiar figure of his best friend. "How did you find this place?"
"Well I didn't have to sit on a gargoyle and listen really hard," Tim grinned mischievously as he got onto the porch. Tim's familiar antics made it hard to keep his frown. Man he should have never told him that's how he found Tim's house that time. Well, was a funny imagine, he'd tease himself if it hadn't been such a pain in the butt. Tim walked up, settling just before the porch steps Conner had stepped down onto.
"So what, Superman send you?"
"Actually I just finished having my weekly tea with Alfred," Tim redirected, before a frown pulled at his face. "Can't I just visit a friend?"
"Not usually how it works in the business," Conner replied a little short. He knew how it went, as soon as someone left a team the friendship seemed to fade away. They all always said we'll still see each other, but with nothing to come together about people faded away and life stayed busy.
"Whose this good boy?" Tim cooed to Krypto, distracting from Conner's sour thoughts.
The dog raced onto the porch, circling Tim as Conner shouted at him that it was fine and to stop barking.
"Krypto. Superman decided to do the whole corny 'a dog needs a boy and a boy needs a dog' thing. I don't know, maybe he got tired of him at the Fortress of Solitude," He shrugged nonchalant. Not that he'd ever admit it, but the hound was the best part of being on the farm. Krypto finished sniffing Robin's jeans before jumping up on to hover in front of Tim's chest and lick the side of his face. It was weird how the dog seemed to be able to tell who he could fly around or not.
"And he flies," Tim laughed, rubbing the dogs stomach. Krypto dropped down to the porch and started rolling on his back tongue lolling out of his mouth. Conner snorted.
"Pfft," Conner rolled his eyes. "If he likes you so much you have him!" Kon didn't really mean it, he kind of liked having Krypto around by now. He was someone to talk to and was pretty helpful with his chores surprisingly. Until he got distracted by some animal. Even if the dog was Superman's way of being overly concerned, worried about how long he'd been out here with Ma and Pa Kent.
"Huh?" Tim looked up confused at him and then shook his head as he caught Conner's meaning. "I think not, Ace would be jealous. He can be very territorial."
"You replaced Batdog?"
"No," Tim snorted, patting Krypto's head again once before taking a seat on the porch steps. "That is Batdog's secret identity."
"Oh brother! Are you joking?" Kon groaned, leaning against the beam along the low set stairs. "Never mind, don't answer that. Of course, you would keep your dog's identity a secret!"
"Well," Tim snickered. "I'm only telling you now because he's retired."
Conner slapped his hand against his forehead. "I thought the mask and cape were a joke!"
"Nah, he has a little star on his forehead, it's very revealing."
"I can't handle any of you Batclan," Conner laughed loudly once. The sound almost startled him, or maybe it was the lightness that had returned to his chest.
He'd felt so heavy for so long… but he remembered it was Tim who kept this nasty secret for him for as long as he could. That he wasn't purely Superman's blood, but that there was a darker part of his biology lurking in him. Conner's constant worry that having Luthor's DNA inside him was going to screw with him or not hadn't been for nothing. That was pretty obvious when Luthor found a way to control him and have him attack his friends. Tim included.
Why else would Connor tuck himself away here? Why leave behind his suit and his very identity? It was the only thing he'd ever been and it was harder than anyone could imagine, trying to be something else here. He'd failed mostly. Besides, he didn't have a huge choice what with the random bouts of x-ray vision he couldn't turn on or off. Whatever these powers Luthor had somehow unlocked… they were safer out here in the middle of nowhere.
"Bart said to say hello," Tim spoke up, sensing Conner's thoughts were getting away with him.
"You two talk a lot?" Conner asked, feeling left out suddenly. It was his own doing… but it was hard to imagine that everyone just went about everything the same with him gone. Conner knew it wasn't that way, it was just a random thought. The old members of Young Justice had gone through a lot lately. He kept up enough to know that. What else did he have to do around here? Besides, whether he'd admit it or not, Conner really did miss his friends.
"Some, he's been busy with the Kid Flash stuff," Tim shrugged.
"It's still weird, the new costume," Conner mused, thinking it was funny to think of Impulse running alongside the Flashes of old. Although it seemed like him and Wally weren't on the same page completely. Connor only half heard stuff. "You haven't wanted to change yours?"
"Gotham will always need a Robin, and I'm happy to stay that way."
Right, and unlike Bart or Tim, changing or staying the same… Conner just stopped entirely. What was left if Superboy was no more? He kept asking himself that.
Tim, as usual, knew just what to say to pull him out of his thoughts. "Hey, you'll always be my clone boy."
Conner burst into laughter, making Tim follow suit and Krypto jump up to find out what was so exciting to them. "I forgot about that."
"Told you you wouldn't live it down," Tim chuckled slyly. "You know, Kon, just because things have changed doesn't mean you aren't the same pers..."
"Who's that Conner, dear?" Aunt Martha emerged, the screen door creaking loudly to announce her entrance. Saved by the bell.
"A friend of mine," Conner explained leaning his head back to smile at the lively old woman.
"Well it's a good thing I just put a pot of supper on," She hummed and turned back in, Krypto got up to run in at her heels.
"That okay?" Tim asked Conner as Aunt Martha went inside.
"Of course," Conner gave him an inquisitive look and Tim shrugged softly. "But before we go inside…. why did you come?"
Tim looked a little fidgety suddenly and Conner knew it had been something. He had a suspicion it had a little something to do with Superman's proposal a few days ago.
"Because it doesn't matter to me what you do next, I'm always going to be here as your friend," Tim assured him with a smile. Kon rubbed the back of his neck and then lightly hit Tim's arm. He rubbed at it, making a face. Tim and all his emotions! Well, it was nice to hear. was going to decide whatever he was going to decide either way. For now… it felt nice, it felt normal to have someone he knew around. Someone who he'd fought while under that spell of Luthor's, and who was still standing here like nothing had happened. For some reason… that helped in some strange way. It just meant a lot to him anyways, that maybe not everything had changed as much as Conner had persuaded himself it had.
"Come on, Ma makes some good pie," Conner smiled at Tim. Honestly, he didn't care why he showed up. It was nice to see someone again. Maybe he'd think about talking to him on the subject, maybe he wouldn't. Lunch was a good place to start though.
