Chapter 44: Space Invader

Another school year was drawing to a close, Harry and his friends had done well in their classes. Harry was fairly certain he'd impressed Professor Vector with his breakdown of the summoning spell, Accio. Even Professor Snape didn't have any derisive words for him this time. Everything seemed to be going alright for once… which should have been a hint that trouble was coming. It began with a tingling on the back of his neck. Harry glanced around, and then turned his gaze skywards: there was something that didn't belong, blazing towards them like a meteor as an outer sacrificial shell ablated away.

"Get in the castle," commanded Harry.

"What's going on?" asked Hermione.

"Trouble," replied Harry, "big trouble".

Hermione ran, the rest trailing behind her, and Harry watched as his foe approached, decelerating and hovering in the air from a moment before disposing the remains of its ablative shell and unfurling into a form he recognized from the stories the others had told him. The yellow-green flesh pierced by metal implants, the hooked metal claws, the sharp blades of the buzzsaw concealed in its belly, the cycloptic red visor over its eyes. It was Gigan. Harry deactivated the Limiter, and Asulmagus emerged.

"Scanning area" said Gigan mechanically, "multiple unknown bioforms detected, unknown energy field detected. Comparing to references. Match found. Bioform Designation: Asulmagus identified".

"What are you doing here?" snarled Asulmagus.

"Fetching misson data," replied Gigan, "Data found: Bioform 'Asulmagus' of Earth has been flagged as a Target of Interest. Capture if possible, or neutralize and collect biosample if capture not possible. You are to be captured. Will you comply?"

"Excuse me?" snorted Asulmagus in disbelief.

"Repeat: Will you comply?" stated Gigan.

"Will you comply?" asked Asulmagus, he blamed Remus for sparking his puckish behavior, what with the stories he told.

"Error! Loop detected," stated Gigan, "resetting… done. Compliance has not been given within set time limit. Combat mode activated. You will be defeated and analyzed".

'Alright, enough joking around,' thought Asulmagus.

He readied himself for the inevitable attack, and watched at Gigan vanished from sight. He stepped to the side, barely dodging a vicious slash of Gigan's claws as it warped back in. He countered with a slash of his own, only for his strike to glance off Gigan's armor. Gigan took a couple of steps back as its visor began to glow. The cyborg kaiju fired off a powerful laser, raking the blast across Asulmagus' belly. He snarled at the hit, and decided to try a different tactic.

"Bones of Earth, bind my foe!" said Asulmagus, channeling his magic.

Stones burst from the ground at Gigan's feet to hold it in place, if only for a moment. Asulmagus charged in, and swung around the bash Gigan with his tail, sending it sprawling. Muscles surged and servos screamed and the cyborg righted itself, and prepared for another assault. Gigan charged towards Asulmagus and swung down with its blades, only for its foe to parry this assault and shove it back towards the castle.

As is to be expected, the sounds of their battle were drawing attention, in particular from a certain scheming headmaster. Dumbledore peered out the window of his tower, watching the monsters trading blows. He watched as Asulmagus struck with his tail, sending this other kaiju, Gigan his mind supplied, stumbling back. He smirked, and readied the Elder Wand, deciding which one he wanted to target.

'Eenie meanie miney moe, catch a griffin by its toe,' thought Dumbledore

His wand settled on the hybrid of flesh and metal, Gigan, and he fired his new spell with great effort.

"IMPERITUS TOTALUS!" Shouted Dumbledore.

Dumbledore clutched the wand tight, straining against the will of his target. The spell backlashed as his control slipped, and he was knocked to the floor. Fawkes trilled with laughter at seeing his failure, but hoped Asulmagus would be able to handle the after effects.

Asulmagus saw the light of the spell flying from the castle, from the Headmaster's tower. What was Dumbledore doing? The spell struck Gigan, and it began twitching chaotically, its voice distorted.

"System Error!" Screamed Gigan as it began to glitch out, "Viral data detected! Attempting countermeasures… failure! Control uplink disrupted: autopilot error. Malfunction: Syntax error: Divide by em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"i/em. M-mi-mission parameters: Cap-error… Destroy local bioforms. TaRget LocAted. ComMencinG miSsion!"

Gigan charged again, now fully out of control. Asulmagus sidestepped and slashed again with his claws and fangs. Gigan strode forward, swinging wildly and catching Asulmagus in its grasp. There was a tortured groan as a powerful motor began to ramp up, and Asulmagus kicked off his foe, slipping from its grasp and taking to the skies just as the buzzsaw fully engaged. Asulmagus began charging his Nova Breath, feeling the power spike as something about it changed. He could feel not only the power of his core pouring into it, but also his magic. He exhaled, releasing the magically supercharged beam of radiation and plasma.

As the dust settled He could see Gigan was in bad shape: its flesh was badly burnt, its visor flickering dully, its armor glowing white hot from the blast, and claws melted.

"Crit-crit-critiCal damaGe," glitched Gigan, "engaGing emeRgency recoVery telepOrt!"

Energy arced and sputtered, and after a couple false starts Gigan vanished in a sonic boom as air filled the vacuum it left. As Asulmagus caught his breath, a trill caught his attention. Fawkes had flow out to join him, flying up to land on his snout.

"A fierce battle, Asulmagus," said Fawkes, "but you'll need to hide yourself before Albus awakes. He ended up knocking himself out in his attempts to enslave Gigan to his will".

"Where should I go?" rumbled Asulmagus.

"Head for Hogsmede, to the building they call the Shrieking Shack," said Fawkes, taking flight again, "Lupin will find you".

"Thank you," said Asulmagus, before he took flight for his goal.

Asulmagus swooped low, using the rolling hills of the area for cover, and once he was as close as he could risk to Hogsmede, he reactivated the limiter. Harry Potter made his way into the town, glad no one was out (or more likely still hiding), and headed up to the old, dilapidated house known as the Shrieking Shack. He pried a board off one of the window, and slipped inside. A short time later, Remus appeared from the basement stairs.

"Harry, there you are," said Remus, "are you alright?"

"I'll probably be a bit sore, but I'll survive," said Harry, "how did you get here so fast?"

"Fawkes seemed rather insistent I come here," said Remus, "what were you thinking!?"

"I was thinking that if I did nothing, all in the castle would be in danger," said Harry, "Remus, that creature, Gigan, was here looking for me".

"But where did it come from?" asked Remus.

"Space, another planet," said Harry, "I've apparently attracted some outside interest. From who, I'm not certain. It wanted to capture me, or barring that retrieve a 'sample'".

Remus wasn't sure what to say, he knew Harry had told him about the fact that aliens existed, and would occasionally attempt to invade Earth for one reason or another. And now they were trying to hurt Harry. His hackles rose, both part of him, man and werewolf wanted to defend Harry. That said, he'd seen without a shadow of a doubt that Harry, no matter what form he wore, was perfectly capable of defending himself. He shook his head, this was something to work out later. For now they had other things to attend to.

"Alright, let's get you back to the castle," said Remus.

Harry and Remus emerged from under the roots of the Whomping Willow and made their way back towards the castle, where they found McGonagall waiting for them.

"Remus, thank Merlin," said McGonagall, "where did you find him?"

"The secret passage under the Whomping Willow," said Remus, "he probably tripped and fell down the hole".

"Well, it's good to see you're safe, Mr. Potter," said McGonagall, "you better get packed".

Harry hurried off, leaving the professors to their own devices.

"What were those things?" questioned McGonagall, "This is the third time in the last several years creatures like that have been seen in Britain".

"They were kaiju Minerva," said Remus, "If I recall reading correctly, they were first reliably observed in Japan back in the '50s. If you'd like, I could recommend some books about them, if you're interested, but to summarize, it seemed like the one resembling a dragon, Asulmagus, was protecting us from the other one".

"I'd appreciate that," said McGonagall, "We must be prepared in case they come back".

The night passed without further problems, and the next morning Harry was on his way home.

A/N: And there we go! Yeah, i couldn't resist doing the 'will you comply' gag briefly. Anyway, next time, summer begins with a meeting of Wolf, Grim, and Wyrm. See you then!
