Chapter 45
Jacob sighed loudly, clicking the end call button on a little flip phone he stole from a Walmart a week ago. He just called Anabelle to check-in for the first time since he left. And man was he happy he did. Her voice sounded the same, light and full of excitement. She had told him about her week and what she was up to making his wolf yip happily.
Every day, he would debate on whether or not to call her. He left to get a break but his wolf would not allow it. Every single one of his thoughts was consumed with her. Her hair, eyes, smile, and her perfect little freckles scattered around her nose and cheeks.
He just couldn't resist. And now he was on the sidewalk, of a Washington town he didn't know the name of. He slowly walks towards a McDonald's before walking in and sitting down and a secluded booth. He opens up his duffel bag before taking out the phone charger he stole and plugging in his newly acquired phone. He could see that people were staring at him. One, because of his sheer size and build, and two, because he just sauntered in without buying anything. He quickly bowed his head, hoping everyone would look away.
A few minutes later, a soft voice interrupted his thoughts. "Excuse me? Can I sit here?" He looked up to see a girl around his age looking at him, holding a tray piled with food. Her eyes were bright green, her skin, dark brown color, and her hair was piled on top of her head in an afro. Her accent was different. It sounded a lot like a British accent but different.
"Uh sure," Jacob replied. When she sat down, he caught a whiff of her scent making him stiffen a little. She smelled like a leech. But she also didn't smell like it either.
"Are you hungry? I saw you come in but you didn't get anything. And I also bought way too much food for myself."
"Uh sure, thanks." Jacob was cautious when grabbing a burger from the tray, not bothering to ask what kind before he took a bite.
"My name's Akilah." The girl told him. Jacob chewed his food before swallowing.
"Jacob." He looked at her closely. Something was off about her. "What are you?" He whispered, peering at her and watching as she took a bite of a nugget.
"I could ask you the same question." She shrugged. "But if you must know, I'm a hybrid."
Jacob looked at her in confusion. "Hybrid?"
"Half-vampire, half-human." She answered. "My father was a vampire who seduced my mother back in South Africa, my home country. She had me before she died and I was raised by my grandmother, Ugogo." Jacob understood her accent know.
"Yeah. It gave me a few interesting looks when I got here." She placed a soda in front of him before continuing. "And you, Jacob, are a shapeshifter. A wolf shapeshifter to be exact. Am I right?"
"How did you know?" Akilah pointed to her head before smiling. "Look, I'm not here to cause trouble. But I saw you yesterday in the woods." Why didn't I smell you? Jacob thought to himself.
"It's really hard to pick up my scent," Akilah answered his silent question. "I was going to leave you alone, I swear. But then I saw that you knew Carlisle. Carlisle Cullen?"
The vamp doctor. Jacob thought.
"Yes. Him. I have been looking for him for quite a while. I have reason to believe he knows who my father is. Do you think you could help me?"
Jake shrugged. "Yeah. He lives in Forks, Washington with his coven. I'm sure you could find it and catch a scent when you get there."
"Thank you, Jacob."
"No problem." They both eat for a few minutes more before Akilah looks up from her food.
"Jacob? I never found out why you're here." Jacob tensed before his mind was filled with Anabelle, and why he left. He ended up showing Akilah everything. How they met, getting to know each other at the hospital, all of their dates, the newborn battle, Bella, Mason, their fight, and ultimately, Jacob leaving.
"Wow," Akilah exclaimed. "That is a lot. So now you're here. Clearing your head?"
Jacob nodded, "That's the plan."
"But, you called her." Jacob nodded, food stuffed in his mouth at the moment. He had to know if she was alright after their fight. And if the bruises had gone away. "The bruises?" Akilah asked, wondering how bad of a fight it was. In her opinion, Jacob was very large and strong and from what she saw of his mate, she was tiny, a small thing that she could snap in a second.
"Yeah. My wolf snapped when she broke up with me and he couldn't take it anymore. He took over me and grabbed her. I ended up forcing myself on top of her." He hung his head in shame, having not been able to say it out loud.
"But it seems like that only happened when you found another guy kissing her leading you to blow up and grab her. Is that right?"
"Seems so." Jacob shrugged. "Oh God, I'm such an asshole."
"Not an arsehole." Akilah amended. "Just a little territorial, and possessive, and a little aggressive at times." She frowned at the look of dread on Jacob's face. "How about this? We both travel back to forks together but in a road trip way, and you can clear your head and I'll take in the sights, I've never seen America up close yet. It's a win-win."
Jacob wasn't that adamant about the idea but hesitantly agreed with some rules. "Two beds, don't come into the bathroom if I'm in there, always wear clothing when you come out of the bathroom, I don't want to see you wrapped in a towel and DON'T try to sleep with me."
Akilah looked at him, trying to keep in her laughter when Jacob was speaking. "Look Jacob, I get it. But I don't want to engage in any type of physical relationship with you. I'm very traditional and will respect your boundaries. Just like you will hopefully respect mine."
"Sounds great. I'll get a map."
(Previously on MHOBTY)"Hello?""Hey, Ethan. I know this is short notice but can we talk?""Oh sure. I just got off work and I'm on my way home. I could come to where you are.""Oh ok. Great! I'm at the beach where we met yesterday.""Ok. I'll be there in 10." Seth ended the call and drew a deep breath before releasing it unsteadily. Sure enough, 10 minutes later, Seth caught the scent of Ethan. He smelled of fresh strawberries and chocolate. They both smiled at each other when they met on the beach."Hey, Seth. I was surprised you called me, I started to think you might have lost my number or threw it away."Seth shook his head before wringing his hands together nervously. "No, I was just nervous. Look, Ethan, I need to tell you something. It's very important, but I don't want to scare you away." Ethan looked at him in confusion."Scare me away? Nothing could scare me away, Seth. You don't like, have a kid or anything do you?" Seth chuckled and shook his head."I'm a werewolf."
"You're a what?" Ethan wheezed. "Wait wait wait. You're a werewolf. How is that? Why?" Seth grabbed his hands before pulling him to sit.
"Please just let me explain. Give me 30 minutes. Please." Seth pleaded. Ethan pulled his hands out of Seth's grasp before turning around and sitting on a log. Seth sighed a breath of relief before he sat next to Ethan on the log. Then he started to explain. Everything. The legends of the wolf spirits, Taha Aki, the cold ones, his phasing, but still keeping the topic of their imprint at bay.
"Wow." Ethan sighed out. "That's…"
"Crazy? Insane? Psychotic? Impossible?"
"Cool." Seth did a double-take, looking at Ethan in shock.
"You don't have a problem with it?" Ethan shook his head.
"Not at all. I mean, yeah, it is kind of out of the ordinary but as long as you don't kill people right?"
Seth shook his head, "No. But we do kill who do kill people. The cold ones, vampires, but there is none right now. There were some here earlier in the summer but my pack was able to defeat them."
"Your pack?"
"Yeah, there are 8 of us. All the guys that came to the party along with my sister."
Ethan looked at him in confusion before asking, "What about Anabelle?"
"She's one of the wolf's sisters. His name is Paul. There's also the im- the girlfriends of some of the guys. They know about us." Ethan nodded, taking in all the new information.
"So, why did you tell me?" Seth grabbed one of Ethan's hands, seeing the stark contrast between his and Ethan's pale white skin. He didn't know what to say. He would not spring the imprint on someone he met the night before.
"I just felt that I needed to tell someone and I can't explain it right now but... yeah." He took a steadying breath. "I like you Ethan, a lot, and I couldn't be your friend without telling you what I was. It would have caused more problems down the road." Seth bowed his head, then Ethan wrapped him in a hug.
"I'm glad you told me, Seth. And I promise I won't tell anyone about this. When you're ready, I'd really like to meet the rest of them. The wolves."
Seth nodded, "Yeah, absolutely. Maybe in a week or so. I need to prepare them first. Let them know that I told you."
"No worries." Ethan told him. "But we are still hanging out later this week right?"
"Yeah. How's Wednesday night sound?"
"Perfect."
Jacob sighed deeply, turning on the water before rinsing his face. He was trying to wrap his head around what happened just hours before. He was going on a road trip across Washington with a half-vampire, half-human hybrid. All he wanted was some peace and quiet. Away from his brothers, away from the Cullen's and those creepy eyes and powers.
But now here he was, in a hotel, about to go to sleep so he could go back home. Akilah was in their room, bringing in her bags of clothes and her heavy load of snacks. He took a deep breath before walking out of the bathroom, finding Akilah holding a map of Washington in her hand.
"Hey, I marked some places we could go to along the way. I wasn't sure how long you were comfortable traveling but I'm pretty sure it will take us about 2 weeks. Are you ok with that?"
Jacob nodded absently. "Two weeks sounds fine." He then grabbed his duffel bag and took out a stick of deodorant before putting some on. When doing so, he couldn't help but look at the picture he had taken with him. It was of him and Anabelle, they were sitting down at the dinner table, a smile spread across both of their faces. In their hands was the acceptance letter Anabelle received from the high school about the early grad program. He smiled before closing the bag up again.
"You think of your mate very often." Akilah voiced. "The connection between you two, from what I can gather, is strong."
"It's strong." Jacob agreed. "But apparently not strong enough. And she's my imprint." He corrected her.
"Imprint…" Akilah repeated. "Is it for life? Like do you guys mate for life?"
Jacob coughed before clearing his throat. "Um I guess. The wolf is forever bound to their imprint, and the imprint gets to decide what the wolf's position in their life is. Whether it's a brother, friend, protector, lover."
"That doesn't sound very comfortable. It sounds like you have no say in your relationship." Akilah made a face before folding the map back up and putting it in her bag.
"We do believe me," Jacob assured her, "all us wolves want is for our imprint to be happy. None of us are unhappy. Well besides myself."
He cleared his throat before sitting down on one of the beds. "So, uh, how old are you? You look around my age."
"I'm 163." She answered. "I stopped growing around the time I was 7 and have been like this ever since. I just recently discovered Carlisle Cullen's name in one of my mother's journals. Apparently, he was the one who devilered me but he doesn't know what became of me after that. My grand mother told me she grabbed me before my father could get his hands on me. She didn't like my father at all, whoever he is."
"And now you want to know who he is."
"Yes. I don't have to find him, I just want to know his name and what he looked like." She said, giving him a sad smile.
Jacob returned it before saying, "Well, I'm sure you'll find what your looking for when we get there."
Akilah nodded, "I hope so."
