Chapter 46- Resumes and References
Monica refused to join Alan, John, and Rae for dinner which didn't really surprise Alan. Monica hated Rae the moment she met her a year before when Rae was looking for the Bible in Port Charles. They didn't end up staying out too long and just got an appetizer. Alan felt he should get home to an angry wife, but he wanted to take a rain check. He said he would call Skye in the morning to find out how her interview went.
John dropped Rae off at home and Rae found Myrtle waiting in the living room reading her book. Myrtle set it on the end table and looked up at Rae. "How was dinner?"
"We called it an early night," Rae said. "Alan wanted to get home to Monica. Is Skye back from her interview yet?"
Myrtle shook her head.
"I hope it goes well for her." Rae sat beside her on the couch. "Though I don't know how I feel about her working for Dorian Lord."
Myrtle laughed. "I hear she's as hard to work for as Erica."
Rae shook her head. "I met her a few times when I first came to Llanview, but she left town for a bit. But everything I've heard from Viki isn't very good." Rae sighed. "Do you think I pushed Skye too hard when I wouldn't let her burn that picture and framed all of these? I know she had a hard childhood and these probably bring up bad memories… but I just couldn't help myself."
"I'm afraid I might be the one pushing her too hard," Myrtle said.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you think I'm being controlling with my to-do list for her?"
"On the contrary," Rae said. "I think she's thriving off of it. Yes, she has some attitude behind it, but it's giving her motivation and even more than that… you're becoming her rock. She wants to make you proud. I'm a little jealous actually. But it's not about me… She needs someone like you. She really didn't have anyone growing up other than Stuart."
"And even Stuart was taken from her…"
"Mama?" Rae reached for her hand and squeezed it. "Did Skye say something while I was gone? You look very pale."
Myrtle turned to her. "It was worse than I thought."
"What?"
"Skye's childhood," Myrtle said. "Why she is the way she is."
"What did she say?"
Myrtle exhaled deeply. "She told me in confidence, and I don't think I should break that."
Rae nodded but frowned. "Can you at least tell me… did Adam or Althea hurt her? Like physically?"
Myrtle shook her head. "It was more neglect and Skye witnessed an incident."
"I should've been there to stop it," Rae said. "She shouldn't have even been with them in the first place."
"She wouldn't have Stuart though," Myrtle pointed out.
"But she would've had a mother who loves her and was there for her."
"Darling, you can not go down the what if road, it only leads to misery," Myrtle said.
"I should've questioned when they said my baby died. I should've insisted on seeing her body."
"Now, listen, you were very young at the time and there's no use blaming yourself. The fault is on Dr. Pintergas, Adam, and Edward. You were just as much a victim as Skye was. All you can do is be there for Skye now."
The front door swung open, and Skye walked in, muttering to herself and she slammed her purse onto the floor.
"Skye?" Rae quickly wiped her tears away. "How did the interview go?"
Skye plopped herself down in a chair with a huff. "I hate that woman… that Dorian Lord."
"What did she do?" Myrtle asked.
"She asked for my references."
Rae and Myrtle exchanged a look, then Rae cleared her throat. "Sweetie, that's what usually happens at interviews…"
"You know, usually I'm confident going to interviews," Skye said. "I used to just wave around the Chandler name and most times they wouldn't even ask questions. Knowing that I was Daddy's daughter was enough. Turns out none of them hired me for me, they just hired me because I was a Chandler. Well, the joke's on me."
"Well, what did you say when she asked for references?" Rae asked.
"The only thing I could do. I excused myself."
"So, you just left?" Myrtle asked.
"I told her I'd save her the time and I left. Come on… Daddy won't give me a good reference, neither will Viki or Todd."
"Well, what about when you counselled young girls at that rehab centre?" Myrtle suggested. "Is there someone there that can give you a good reference?"
Skye sighed. "I haven't talked to those people in a long time."
"Then you won't delay any further," Myrtle said. "Call them up tonight and get them lined up as references and you're going to get back on that horse."
Skye sat up straighter. "Oh Grandma, will you help me practice for my next interview?"
Myrtle looked at Rae and back to Skye. "I will not."
Skye frowned.
"I'm going to step aside and let your mother help you with this one," Myrtle said.
Skye looked over at Rae.
Rae smiled. "Is that okay with you, Skye?"
Skye nodded.
"If you you'll excuse me…" Myrtle rose with her book. "I'm going upstairs to do some reading." She patted each other their heads as she headed upstairs.
"So, what is your next interview?" Rae asked. "The dog grooming?"
"No." Skye stared at her lap. "Promise you won't make fun of me?"
"Honey, I would never make fun of you."
"It's even lower than a servant's job… it's dishwasher at the Palace."
"Okay, and when is the interview?" Rae asked.
"Tomorrow. It's only three days a week though."
"That's a start," Rae said. "With anything you have to start somewhere."
"Not when you're a Chandler," Skye mumbled. "Daddy gets you in somewhere up top right away."
Rae cleared her throat. "Do you have a resume handy?"
Skye nodded and ran up to her room, then returned and plopped down beside Rae on the couch. She handed her the resume, then shifted closer to her and pointed to her work experience. "I just have Tempo Magazine, the Banner, and the Sun listed. Do you think I should add the counseling?"
Rae skimmed through the resume. "I think if you use them as references, then you should include it."
"I suppose I could also write down being Starr's nanny—"
"No." Rae shook her head. "That's a bad idea. That didn't last long, and they'll definitely ask for Blair's contact information."
"But she's in jail anyway."
"They're going to ask why you stopped nannying, how would you answer?"
Skye shrugged. "I'd tell them Starr was a little brat and—"
"Exactly why you should leave that out," Rae said.
Skye rolled her eyes. "Okay, fine."
"Is there anyone from Temp, the Banner, or the Sun who would give you a good reference? A co-worker even?"
She sighed. "No. There's no one."
"Employers usually ask for three references, and they tend to want them from different areas, not the same."
"Well, maybe Brooke English would give me an okay reference… she did compliment my articles a few times. Though she didn't care for me much when she was married to Daddy."
Rae scrunched her face. "How many wives did Adam have?"
Skye held out her hand to count. "Well, there was Mother… I mean Althea, Brooke, Erica, Dixie, Natalie, Gloria, Arlene, and now Liza. So, eight…"
Rae nodded. "Wow…"
"I guess I'm well on my way, since I've been married three times already…"
"So… Brooke English. Isn't her son missing?"
"Yeah, Jamie," Skye said.
"I'm not so sure this is a good time to be using her as a reference then."
Skye groaned and leaned back against the couch. "I'm never going to get a job again."
"Skye, you had one interview. You can't give up so easily. Job hunting takes time. You need to persevere and stay positive. You will find a job. You will."
Skye lifted her legs onto the couch and leaned against Rae's arm. "Can we bring the TV in here and watch a movie? It's so cozy here."
Rae smiled. "You know how to distract me, don't you?"
"Maybe…"
"Let's do a couple mock interviews first, then we can make some popcorn and watch something. Deal?"
Skye looked up at her, but still rested her head against her arm. "Deal."
