Teddy walked to the room that was listed in Christopher's chart.

"Tina," Owen said from the door, "this Dr. Altman the head of cardio."

"Ms. Kandler," Teddy greeted, "I'm Dr. Altman Christopher's surgeon. My resident Dr. Yang has run a few tests for me and we're waiting for results."

"Do I need surgery," Christopher asked.

"You do," Teddy said, "I'm going to take a listen. I need you to sit up for me."

Teddy listened to the boy's heart and lungs.

"I'll get you scheduled for later today," Teddy stated, "I need a little more family history."

"I can't give you his father's side," Tina said.

"Let's step out," Teddy said, "come with me."

Tina followed Teddy towards her office.

Tina took in the photos on the wall, Teddy and Owen's wedding photo, the two of them with Allison, a family photo with Evelyn and Nikki.

"You know Owen Hunt," Tina commented.

"We've been married almost two years," Teddy said, "how do you know Owen?"

"We dated in college," Tina replied.

"Some of Christopher's scans showed injuries to his abdomen," Teddy said, "I've asked Dr Hunt to consult on this case. How did your son's injuries happen?"

"He's a wrestler," Tina said, "he didn't say anything about injuries."

"We noticed some abnormalities so we did the next set of scans," Teddy replied, "Dr. Hunt will explain what he wants to do to repair the injuries."

Owen knocked on the door before opening it, "Tina, Dr. Altman."

"Owen," Tina said, "Christopher needs a surgery to his abdomen."

"Yes," Owen said, "his liver is bleeding and we need to fix it. Myself or another trauma surgeon. In his chart his father is listed as unknown, given his birthday I need to know. Is Christopher my son?"

"I don't know," Tina said.

"We need to find out," Owen said, "I'm going to take myself off the case and send my fellow who is a very capable surgeon. I can't operate on Christopher until we know and he needs surgery before the test results would be back."

"Do we have to do the test," Tina asked.

"We do," Teddy declared.

"Why didn't you tell me when you found out," Owen asked.

"Because you were going to med school and I couldn't stop that," Tina said.

"You should have told me," Owen said.

"I don't know if you're his father," Tina said.

"How do you not know," Owen asked.

"That guy your sister caught me with wasn't the only other guy I was seeing," Tina admitted, "I was seeing two men other than you. It could be any one of the three of you."

"You cheated on me with two men," Owen snapped, "now you bring your son who you don't know who the father is to my hospital?"

"Our doctor sent us to Dr. Altman," Tina said.

"Here's what we're going to do," Teddy said, "we are going to take Christopher up to surgery, I'm going to operate on his heart as planned. Dr. Edgar will fix the liver bleed. We are going to add the paternity test to his labs and Dr. Hunt will also give us a blood sample for our in lab to process. We should have the results by the end of next week."

"Do we have to," Tina asked, "we've been gone so far."

Owen slammed his hand on the table, "damn it Tina that could be my son that you've hid from me for 14 years. Don't you think I should have known that he should know his father. If he's mine I want him in our lives to know his little siblings."

"Why do you care. You were horrible with kids. You couldn't stand them," Tina raved, "called your own sister a stupid little baby."

"I know I messed up with Nikki. We've come a long way. Nikki trusts me now. I'm the favorite sibling," Owen snapped, "but you never gave me a chance. You never gave me a choice. We are doing this test. If he is my son I want visitation and to get to know him."

"It's too late he's 14," Tina said.

"Get the test and we'll decide," Owen said, "as you said it's only a 33% chance he's mine. If he's mine I will be part of Christopher's life as much as he wants me."

"And if I say no to the paternity test," Tina asked.

"Then I'll sue you to have it done," Owen said.

"Just do it," Tina snapped, "can we get a new heart person?"

"Call Riggs," Teddy said.

"Not Nathan Riggs," Tina declared.

"Pierce then," Teddy said, "she's young but she's good. I'll walk her through the case."

"Thank you," Tina said standing up and leaving Teddy's office.

Once the door closed again Owen said, "only a 33% chance he's mine. But I have to know."

"We have to know," Teddy agreed, "and he has a right to know."

After her meeting and teaching a couple hours of music lessons at the rec center Nikki pulled up in front of Jeff's apartment. She had been thinking about what Nathan had said that afternoon.

"You wanted to talk," Jeff said, letting her in.

"We need to talk and you're going to listen," Nikki said.

"Why am I going to listen," Jeff asked.

"Because you do all the talking and make all the decisions," Nikki said, "right now you're going to sit down, shut up and listen to me."

"What," Jeff gasped.

"This time you're going to listen," Nikki said, "if you want me to stick around then things have to change."

"If you leave me you'll be alone forever," Jeff replied, "no one will want you."

"It's my turn," Nikki declared.

"What," Jeff asked.

"Things have to change," Nikki said, "we're partners and a team. It's not one of us more important than the other. Both of our goals are equally valid. Education is not less than engineering it is not the easy way out or a soft option. I'm teaching because I want to."

"You're smarter than teaching Nik," Jeff said.

"I want to teach," Nikki replied, "I'm good at it and it makes me happy. It's not being soft or taking the easy way out. You're going to stop calling my choice to be a teacher worthless. It's what I want to do. I still end up with a science degree at the end of college just like you."

"Are you done," Jeff asked.

"No," Nikki replied, "equals doesn't just mean academically or career wise. It means away from school. I get that you hate cooking and I love to but that doesn't mean you don't help. Do what you can, help me, help clean up. If I cook you can do dishes. Cooking is not women's work."

"Does your brother cook," Jeff counter.

"Who made the lasagne last time they had us for dinner," Nikki said.

"Owen took it out of the oven," Jeff replied.

"Teddy was in surgery all day that day," Nikki replied, "equal means we both do things. You want to move in together. Julie is looking at moving in with Andy but who knows. I would rather work a bit more and stay in my place by myself then be your cook and housekeeper. Julie and I share keeping things clean."

"You won't live with me because I don't do housework," Jeff asked.

"I don't even like using your bathroom when I'm here," Nikki said, "your tub looks like someone murdered a smurf in it. Why is it blue?"

"You have been so manipulated by your mom and your siblings to think that your way is the only way," Jeff complained.

"I'm asking you to compromise," Nikki retorted, "to treat me as an equal."

"That's it," Jeff asked.

"Treat me as an equal," Nikki said.

"What about spending the night," Jeff asked.

"When it makes sense to," Nikki said, "but I know you don't love staying at my place because of my roommate and landlord but I don't like staying here. Curtis makes me uncomfortable."

"What's wrong with Curtis," Jeff asked.

"He looks at me weird," Nikki said, "and makes dirty comments if you're not in the room."

"He's harmless," Jeff said, "he knows your my girlfriend anyway."

"I still don't like the way he talks to me," Nikki replied.

"Then lets get our own place," Jeff pressed.

"No," Nikki said, "I'm not there yet. You have to stop pushing me to do things I'm not ready for."

"When will you be Nik," Jeff asked.

"I don't know," Nikki replied, "I can't put a time line on it."

"Why," Jeff asked.

"It's a huge step," Nikki said, "it's like the step before marriage."

"Explain," Jeff pushed.

"The only 'grown up' couple I've really seen or gotten to know is Owen and Teddy," Nikki replied, "I was raised by a single mom who until this spring didn't date. They went from best friends to a couple to guess what we're having a baby in the span of a month. She was his best friend for years first. Like I was 8 or 9 the first time I met her, she came home every leave with Owen, Meghan and Nate. It was like having 4 older siblings come home. But when that started Owen was with Beth, Meg and Nate so they would do things and I would be Teddy's buddy."

"So you don't want to live with me because you don't want kids yet," Jeff asked.

"I don't want the pressure of living together yet," Nikki replied, "I'm only 19. We've been together officially for a year. It's too soon. Why don't we do some of those other steps first. I've never met your parents, just your sisters when they came with their school."

"So you're saying you want to come to Bend with me," Jeff said.

"I'd like to," Nikki said, "you've gotten to know my family. You've helped me babysit my niece. I think that's our next step. I need to meet your family, we need to work out our balance and what works for us before we can live together."

"Will you sleep over," Jeff asked.

"Not tonight and not here. I won't stay here not when you share a dorm with Curtis," Nikki said, "Owen is on call and Teddy has a late surgery. I'm watching Allison until she's home."

"What is your issue with Curtis," Jeff asked.

"You share a room," Nikki groaned, "no just no."

"Thats the big issue with staying here," Jeff said.

"Yes," Nikki said, "it's weird and I'm not that type of girl."

"That's why I want to live together," Jeff said, "so my roommate isn't an issue."

"No," Nikki said, "moving in with me isn't the solution. Find your own place, get an apartment off campus even if it means working a few hours a week in the school year. We can spend time at either place when it works for both of us. Figure out our next steps slowly, find our balance and how we work as a couple. When I say I want to be alone I need to be alone. Sunday night I was tired, annoyed and needed to be alone so I didn't lose my temper with you. You kept arguing and pushing me until I lost my temper. It never ends well when I lose it."

"I know your temper," Jeff said, "I've been on the receiving end of it enough now. You just yell and argue before locking yourself in your room or bathroom."

"I don't like being in that place," Nikki said, "when I tell you something I need you to listen the first time. Things like not helping and not taking those hints make me angry."

"I didn't realize that," Jeff said, "it's just not how I grew up."

"It is how my family works," Nikki said, "when we're with them it needs to be there way."

"I guess I can try," Jeff said.

"Why haven't I met your parents when they come visit," Nikki asked.

"Because they embarrass me," Jeff said, "I'm the first in my family to go to college. My mom works at the grocery store and my dad is a truck driver. Nik your mom is a nurse and went to college, your siblings are all doctors. My dad believes the earth is flat. It's embarrassing."

"It's still your family," Nikki said, "our family's are different. I'm under a lot of pressure to prove my path is equal."

"What your saying is that you want to talk more and spend more time together just hanging out," Jeff said.

"Yes," Nikki said.

"I can do that," Jeff agreed.

"Thank you," Nikki replied.

Jeff put his arms around her, "I love you Nik."

"I love you too," Nikki replied.

What do you think is Christopher Owen's son?
