It was heading towards Christmas, meaning the ground was beginning to cover with snow and eventually, it was two-feet deep. Somehow, Fred had convinced Haidee to stop studying that Sunday morning to go outside in the freezing cold with them. She decided to wear the large jumper Fred had loaned her that one time which she hadn't given back.
"Please tell me you have a brilliant reason for taking me from the nice, warm library where I was studying Charms into the freezing weather-" She was abruptly cut off by a snowball to the face, thrown by George.
"Good enough reason?" he asked as she spat out some snow from her mouth.
"I couldn't think of a better one if I tried," she said simply as she rounded a snowball in her hand and aimed it at George, missing, and hitting Fred causing George to howl with laughter. "You know, no matter how horrible my aim seems to be, I always appear to hit something," she said with a laugh, before squealing and hobbling out of the way of Fred's oncoming snowball.
The snow was so thick, she would sink to her knees with every step, making it impossible for her to move any slower. She laughed, shielding her head as the brothers began to pelt her with snowballs. "Mercy! Mercy!" she cried as she felt snow sink down her chest. "You both have multiple unfair advantages! You're both tall with good aim, I, however, am exactly the opposite! You can't gang up against me!"
"Fine, pick one," George said, dropping the snowball in his hand as he pointed between Fred and himself.
"Well, she's obviously picking me-"
"George!" she cheered, making him smile as George ran over to her.
"Yes!"
"Hey!" Fred cried as he watched his girlfriend being pulled out of the snow by his brother.
Together, they huddled in a plan of attack. Once they released, Haidee pulled out her wand and swirled it in the air, making a bunch of snow form snowballs as high as a tree. Then, she climbed on George's shoulders and with his height advantage and her snowballs, together, they began their attack.
Haidee would grab snowballs form the top end of the pile while George grabbed from the bottom end. Each of them constantly had a snowball in each hand at any time, making Fred's efforts to dodge futile. The continued to throw and dodge the snowballs. Haidee was laughing and wobbling around on George's shoulders as he dodged, but somehow, he still found it effortless to move in the amount of snow. They continued to fight until their piled had diminished and Fred was buried in a mountain of snow.
"Brilliant job, Haidee," George congratulated as he placed her back down on the snow.
"Thank you for the height," she laughed and George smiled, the two of them waddling over to Fred.
"Anytime," he replied. Haidee swiped some snow off of Fred, who was standing up from his defeat.
"That was evil," Fred informed making Haidee smile.
"I saw my chance to defeat you and I took it," she laughed. "I must admit, it was fun watching you fall."
"You are evil," Fred corrected, shaking the snow from his hair.
"I'm sorry," she apologised, kissing his cheek when she felt his arms wrap around her and she ascended from the ground. He was swinging her around in her arms. He kept spinning to get momentum until, at the right time, he let her go, sending her flying through the air, laughing, and landing in a pile of snow.
She landed with an oof, the snow around her completely covering her on the impact. From bellow the snow, she could hear both of the twins howling with laughter at the sight as she struggled out.
"That," she said pointedly, "was evil."
"Here, watch this. Ron and Harry are trying to do homework," George said as he aimed a snowball at the Gryffindor common room window. Hit after hit, they continued to pelt the window, laughing as they did.
"Oi!" Ron bellowed after opening the window. "I'm a prefect and if I one more snowball hits this window- ouch!" Fred aimed a snowball directly for his face. He saw them and instantly retreated.
"Prefect," Fred scoffed with a laugh. "What a git."
The DA gatherings had become everyone's favourite part of the week. It had not only become a place of learning and defence but also one where they could be themselves; where rules were merely a second thought. They had no worries of hiding themselves and ensuring their uniforms were correct all of the time, where instead they focused on learning and making friends.
Haidee had indeed become good friends with Luna in her time at the meetings, as every time since the first lesson when they needed to pair up, Haidee and Luna would be together. They learnt a lot about each other and Haidee came to see that Luna was always unapologetically herself. Her kindness was a force to reckon with and her uniqueness an unforgettable quirk. She enjoyed her time with Luna, as Luna enjoyed her time with Haidee.
But not only had Haidee's relationship with Luna grown but hers with many of the students there too. Although Hogwarts had become a plundering mess under the increasing control of Professor Umbridge and the Ministry, Dumbledore's Army seemed to be a glimpse of hope in the darkness, and that was all she needed.
Fred enjoyed his time in Dumbledore's Army for many of the same reasons, but also because it was a space where he and Haidee were free to be as playful as they liked. With Umbridge's rise in power, some of the spontaneous acts of love Fred would share with Haidee had to be put on hold, otherwise, Umbridge would simply separate them with a flick of her wand, even if they were not specifically breaking any school rules.
Haidee learnt that she hadn't missed the surprise tickle attacked he would spring upon her where should could now playfully remove him with a quick Revulsion Jinx, causing Fred to let go of Haidee just long enough for her to roll out from under him and attempt to run away. This, however, is useless when he decides to be torturous and use the Ticking Charm, Rictusempra,in which, she can only beg for mercy.
Sometimes, when the DA meetings were not scheduled, she would summon the room they would use to practice just to find those books that were not in the library and read them. She was pleased to say she was learning a lot, even if some of the things Harry was teaching her would be revision.
She was learning about all new spell from the books such as Ear-Shrivelling Curse, Langlock, Sea Urchin Jinx, Cave inimicumandImperturbable Charm, all of which seemed quite useful. She couldn't wait to put all the new spells she had read about to practice.
It was coming to the last DA meeting of the term, before the Christmas break and she was very excited to spend the Christmas Holidays at the Weasley's, as she had been invited, but just as thrilled to go to the DA meeting.
She wandered into the kitchen hours before the meeting was scheduled to do some baking in celebration of the last meeting of the term. She thought it would be nice to share some sweets.
She spent those few hours leading up to the meeting baking cakes, tarts, slices, pastries and even some boiled sweets of all different flavours and sizes. She was excited to share them with everyone.
She was setting up the piles and Fred and George walked in. She had told them she was there, making some sweets and they requested something imparticular.
"Jeeze, Haidee, we didn't ask for this much," George joked, taking a cupcake from a pile and shoving the whole thing in his mouth in one bite.
"These are for the meeting," said Haidee. "This," she reached across the counted to display a lovely decorated chocolate cake, "is for you,"
"Thanks," Fred said, taking out his wand. "Furnunculus!" he said, hexing the cake with the Pimple Jinx. "It's for Filch. We've seen him sneaking around trying to catch the meetings in the act. Thought we'd have a bit of fun," Fred explained at the sight of Haidee confused reaction. Haidee shrugged, she expected nothing less.
As they headed to the DA meeting, Haidee had seen what Fred and George were talking about. There had been a little table set along the corridor, she expected it to be Filch's, who would wait to see if he could catch any of the members red-handed.
Fred took hold of the hexed hover cake behind him and the bewitchment broke and it fell gently into Fred's hands. While Filch was not there, he placed it on the table and then ran behind the corner where the others were.
Haidee didn't know if the plan would work for she didn't know if Filch was going to show up, and if he was, she wasn't sure if he would eat the suspicious cake that had magically appeared for him, but she didn't speak her fears. However, they were proven wrong when Filch appeared for his shift, smiled at the delicious looking cake, and took a bite.
Instantly, his face erupted in boils and pimples, causing Fred and George to smile evilly at the sight. He marched off, probably to warm Professor Umbridge, but they didn't care as there was no proof.
At Filch's absence, Fred and George began to laugh as they entered the DA meeting, which hadn't started just yet, but they were the last to arrive. Behind Haidee, floated in the food. There was a moment of silence as the entirety of the DA members all stared at them, all of their mouths salivating at the sent. Haidee mumbled a few times before speaking a bit louder when no one had responded to what she had said.
"Well, it's the last meeting we're having before the break. I thought we should celebrate," she said timidly. The room, which was once silence, filled with cheers and they went to place the abundance of food on the tables that had magically appeared to the side of the room.
Instantly, everyone went to grab a sweet, they're faces filled with cheer and joy as they chatted to each other. Even Harry, who was about to start teaching, stopped and had something to eat.
Haidee watched as everyone enjoyed her sweets. Even Fred and George abandoned her to get some and join the festive spirit. They all talked for a bit and ate until they couldn't fit anymore, before returning to the last lesson of the term, which throughout, people would walk back to the tables to get another sweet if they ever felt like it.
It was a revisionary lesson, in which Haidee was able to try out some of the new spells she had found. Some of them, she found, was completely horrid and she apologises profusely to Luna, her only willing participant, as she undid the curses.
"It's all right," muttered Luna, who's ears had just shrivelled up. "But I think I might stop now."
"I agree," Haidee said quietly.
"But I do like your raspberry tarts," she smiled, taking a bite of one. Yet another, who enjoyed her raspberry tart.
The DA meeting was lovely and studious and at the end, Harry wished everyone a happy holiday.
Haidee was in bed, sleeping in her Hufflepuff dormitory. The blankets were warmly wrapped around her and the cheer of the recent Dumbeldor's Army meeting had still filled her mind, leaving her lips etched with a smile.
The room was dark and peaceful, and that was how she felt; at peace. So many things had seemed to be going wrong for many years in a row that she grew to celebrate and enjoy the small victories, like all the compliments she had received that night for her astounding cooking and the thanks she received for allowing the leftover sweets to be brought to all the houses common rooms. She celebrated the small victory of having pranked someone with Fred again, as she had been so busy with school work she had missed a couple of opportunities.
She was content, she felt safe as if Fred's warms hand wrapping around her in a tight hug. She felt the hand wrap around her arms and squeeze. They squeezed hard and sharp until it felt like her bed was shaking. The comforting feeling had been crushed under the weight of the hand, a muffled noise sounded from above.
Instantly, she woke with a fright. She rose from her laying position as her eyes darted frantically around the room for any disruption when she had seen a confused and anxious-looking Professor Sprout looking over her. Her chubby hands had clamped onto Haidee's arms, shanking her as she screamed for her to wake.
Haidee became alert that instant, as the dark bedroom fill with light and her roommates rose from their beds, frantically asking what was wrong to their Head of House.
"It doesn't concern you," said Professor Sprout. "Haidee, we much go now."
Haidee was not sure what was happening or why Professor Sprout looked so scared, but she exited her bed and had just enough time to wrap and nightgown around herself before being tugged out the door by her Head of House.
She looked over her shoulder to see the mixture of fear and confusion flash across her roommate's faces when she heard Professor Sprout speak, "Do you have the powder?"
"The powder?" Haidee said, wondering how she knew about the powder. "Yes, yes I have it with me."
"Good," Professor Sprout nodded. "Dumbledore needs it for some reason." Maybe she didn't know about the powder, but before she could ask, she was being dragged out of the Hufflepuff common room and towards Dumbledore's office.
With her one hand that was free, she rubbed her tired and red eyes, using most of her concentration to try and balance herself while she was being dragged behind a rushing Professor Sprout.
Once they made it to Dumbledore's office, she saw Ron, Harry, Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore, who looked much calmer than Professor Sprout had. All, but Dumbledore, who was sitting at his desk, were staring at Harry as if waiting for an answer.
"Here she is, Professor Dumbledore," interveined Professor Sprout.
"Thank you, Pomona, that will be all," he said kindly, but he did not look to Haidee until after Harry answered whatever question he had asked before she had entered.
"I was the snake," Harry said. "I saw it from the snake's point of view." Dumbledore nodded and turned to Haidee, looking her directly in the eyes unlike he did with Harry.
"And you?" he asked.
"Snake?" she asked, unsure if she was allowed to talk about her visions in front of Harry. Her eyes switched from Harry's, who was looking at her with a desperate expression on his face, to Dumbledore, who simply nodded for her to continued. "The snake attacked me. I saw it from the victim's point of view," she announced.
"Is Arthur seriously injured?" Dumbledore asked Harry, to which he responded, "Yes!" enthusiastically.
"Arthur?" she asked, looking around. Dumbledore jumped from his desk. The sudden movement frightened both Harry and Haidee as he started addressing some of the portraits around his office.
"Harry, what's going on?" she asked quickly, more confident that she would speak to him about the news after Dumbledore's little nod.
"Mr Weasley's been attacked. I saw it . . . " Harry explained. "What did you see?"
"A large snake just jumped out at me and attacked me, but there was no sign of Mr Weasley," she muttered, feeling guilty for not knowing. "I screamed and woke up. Is- is he all right?" but before he could answer, one of the portraits spoke, silencing their conversation.
"They've taken him to St Mungo's, Dumbledore . . . they carried him past my portrait . . . he looks bad."
"Thank you," said Dumbledore, before turning to McGonagal. "Minerva, I need you to go and wake the other Weasley children."
"Of course," she said before leaving swiftly.
Harry, Ron and Haidee were left standing awkwardly in suspense as Dumbledore continued to order around the portraits a couple more time until McGonagall returned with Fred, George and Ginny who all looked dishevelled and shocked, still in their night things.
