The Invincible Spider-Man
Chapter 50: An Altruistic Personality
Wilson Fisk was in his office, working on some paperwork, all of which had piled up thanks to his absence from his company.
"Getting Fisk Industries back on track is gonna be harder than you think, isn't it Wilson?" asked a voice from a shadowy corner. Fisk craned his neck to the corner, only to see a man in a black coat and fedora looking back at him. He had a weapon in his right hand.
Slowly, Fisk put the paperwork away and brought his arms down under his desk, towards a panic button. "You have my attention," he replied.
"Before you do press that panic button, you should know that I deactivated the solenoid connected to that switch. So, rest assured, a current will pass, but without the electromagnet, there's isn't gonna be any sound. Specifically infrasound, which will be picked up by a receiver carried by your guards, who let's just say have taken a longer than desired break," said the man.
Fisk was impressed, as he sat back in his chair. "Impressive. Looks like you know my security detail quite well," said Fisk, as the man chuckled.
"Well, we have known each other for a long time, haven't we?" asked the man, extending a hand towards the light. The hand was robotic.
"Manfredi?" asked Fisk, and the figure nodded. Sylvio Manfredi was standing in front of Fisk.
"Good to see you too, old friend," said Sylvio, still in the shadows. Before Fisk could say another word, Sylvio took out a gun and shot him in the shoulder.
"AGH!" grunted Fisk, falling out of his chair. He grabbed his shoulder in pain. Manfredi walked up to him, aiming his gun to Fisk's head.
"You still have a part to play," he said, slamming the butt of the gun 5 times onto Fisk's head, knocking him out.
"Well, you got me," said Chameleon, smirking, as Spider-Man stared with fury. He slammed the mask down on the metal table and clenched his fist, seething with anger.
"Where's Osborn? How did he contact you?" asked Spider-Man, but Chameleon simply chuckled.
"I can't imagine the anger coursing through you right now. To know that you let this happen right under your nose," he said. "We've been in contact via snail mail for months now. Ever since Wilson Fisk took down Rose," said Chameleon.
"Why since then? And why Wilson Fisk? How does he tie into this?" asked Spider-Man. Chameleon shrugged.
"I was just hired to impersonate him for a while. Well, at least after Octavius enacted his plan," said Chameleon.
Spider-Man was even more confused. "How the Hell did Norman know Otto's plan?" asked Spider-Man. Once again, Chameleon chuckled.
"It must be killing you from the inside, not knowing all the answers. How does it feel being left in the dark? Like a spider being suffocated underneath a person's boot?" mocked Chameleon.
Enraged, Spider-Man grabbed Chameleon by the collar and picked him off of the chair, slamming his back to the wall.
"Today's not a good day to piss me off, Smerdyakov! Tell me what I need to know," he said, through gritted teeth, tightening his grip. Chameleon simply grinned from ear to ear through his white mask.
"We both know you're not gonna send me to the ground, six feet deep. Do me a favour and stop with the empty threats," he replied.
Spider-Man dropped him back down to the ground and left the interrogation room, while Jean followed closely behind him as she left the observation room.
"What the Hell did you think you were doing?" asked Jean.
"Wilson Fisk is tied into this somehow, even though he told me he wasn't. Although, he denied being The Altruist. He never denied not working for, or with him," said Peter, hitting up on an epiphany.
"Want Watanabe and her team to do a sweep of his office? It's not exactly welcome, but I can pull some strings to make it work," she suggested, as they walked to the exit.
"No need, the police are already stretched too thin with the Sinister Six. I have someone working on a potential lead. I'll contact you when I come up with something,"
"Also, Spot is ready for your meeting with him. He's in the general population wing B," she said, escorting Spider-Man to Spot's cell.
Gen-Pop was lined with many cells full of inmates, full of criminals who went crazy looking at Spider-Man. Some started screaming in anger, others stuck their hands out to grab him, and others simply threw pieces of food and paper on him.
"Spider-Boy's here!"
"Get me outta here and we'll have a fair fight, freak!"
"Wannabe Avenger!"
Spot was sitting in his cell, with the collar that negated his powers. Without his powers, his body wasn't in its white form with black spots over it. Instead, he had blond hair with a wrinkled forehead.
"Spider-Man! It's been a while,"
"Dr. Ohnn! Good to see you again," said Peter, shaking his hand. Jean raised an eyebrow when noticing how other criminals wanted to kill him, but Spot seemed really friendly.
"Well, what do you need to talk about?" asked Spot, aka Jonathan Ohnn.
"I need your help to fight the Sinister Six. I can't defeat them alone," said Peter.
"Oh, the team led by that Doctor Octopus fella?" asked Spot.
"Yeah. I know it's a lot to ask, but I need all the help I can get," explained Spider-Man.
"Well…count me in!" he said.
"Wait, really?" asked Peter, a little surprised by his enthusiasm.
"Spider-Man, you were the only one who saw the good in me, especially when I was arrested. Besides, I have some unfinished business with Mysterio," he said, cracking his knuckles.
"Okay, cool. Uh, Jean, bring Dr Ohnn to Precinct 52, we'll regroup there," he said.
"Sure," said Jean, as Spider-Man walked out of the prison.
Peter dialed up Felicia, hoping she had got some kind of lead.
"I'm assuming this isn't a booty call," said Felicia, chuckling on the other end.
"You assume right. The Altruist, tell me you have a name," said Peter.
"I might," she said. "Swing by and I'll show you what I've found,"
Spider-Man arrived at Felicia's apartment, and noticed her black cat sitting on the couch next to her. She was on her laptop.
"What have you got?" he asked her. Felicia smirked.
"Right to the point, huh? I think it's Sylvio Manfredi," she said.
"The old crime boss?" asked Peter, taking off his mask and sitting beside her.
"I always thought that calling himself "The Altruist" was really…out of the blue, I guess. Sylvio Manfredi was a businessman and crime boss. His business partners referred to him as, get this, "altruistic." He also had beef with Wilson Fisk, especially in the Hell's Kitchen area," she said, as her hand crept up Peter's thigh.
"Still, that could be a coincidence, couldn't it?" asked Peter.
"Maybe. But it's worth a shot. Speaking of which, guess what else is worth it?" she asked, pushing her hand up towards his chest and leaning in closer, but Peter pulled away.
"Uh, Felicia…I don't think right now is the best time. Besides, that was a one time thing, remember?" asked Peter.
"Right, of course. You still need to figure things out with blondie. And yeah, I'd rather not be a rebound girl," she said, slightly embarrassed. Peter ran his hand through her hair.
"Relax. I'll figure out this whole Altruist situation first, then I'll deal with the Peter Parker stuff," he said, standing up and putting on his mask, walking towards the window.
"Peter, listen," she said, as Peter turned around towards her.
"This, Altruist guy. He seems dangerous, like he's playing all of us. And you're honestly putting too much pressure on yourself. What I'm trying to say is…stay safe," she said. Peter nodded and jumped out of the window.
Felicia sighed. "He's gone," she said, and that's when the man in black walked out of the shadows.
"I'm assuming you nudged him in the right direction?" asked the man.
"Yes, Mr-, I mean Altruist," she said, turning away from him.
"Good. Just remember, if you do anything to sabotage me, his life is on the line. And I'm not talking about Peter Parker's," said The Altruist.
"I know," she said, turning around, but the man was gone.
Peter entered his room at ESU, and instantly when to the internet and took out pictures of the various suspects as well as everyone else part of this mystery. He took out some red string and thumbtacks, walking up to his board.
He pinned Black Cat and Spot's images underneath allies towards the left corner, then he took the pictures of Scorpion, Mysterio, Electro, Vulture and Sandman and placed them at the bottom, towards the right. Above them, he connected a picture of Otto Octavius with the red string.
He then took a picture of Michael Morbius and pinned it parallel to Otto. A little to the left, he pinned a picture of Chameleon, and above him a picture of Norman. He then took a picture of Sylvio Manfredi and Wilson Fisk, and placed them beside each other.
In the center of the board, he took an Ace of Spades and pinned it in the middle, connecting Otto Octavius, Sylvio Manfredi and Wilson Fisk, Norman Osborn and Michael Morbius to the card. He also took a picture of the Nanotech Energy and connected it to Black Cat, and the Ace of Spades as well.
"The Altruist is the Ace of Spades. Somehow, he's orchestrating all of this, but how? And more importantly, why? Why does he need the Nanotech Energy? Why hire the Chameleon and release Norman Osborn? Why help turn Dr Morbius into a living vampire? And why's he messing with me?" he asked himself., pondering his thoughts.
"Sylvio Manfredi is the prime suspect, but he hasn't been seen in a long time. Fisk must know something about his whereabouts. Maybe I should have a chat with him. And also ask Michael about what the Altruist looked like," thought Peter. Just then, he heard commotion in the hallway.
He walked out of his room, only to see all the students piling around the television in the dormitory. The Mayor was addressing the city.
"In light of recent events, I have decided to start a citywide lockdown. No one is to leave their homes for any insignificant reasons. There are escaped inmates and super-criminals prowling the streets, and danger is escalating. The police force barely has the resources to maintain this. Thank God there is someone who does," said The Mayor.
All the students gasped, while Peter cursed under his breath. Running back to his room, he put on his suit and headed towards Fisk Industries.
Fisk had left his window open, knowing that sometime Spider-Man was gonna show up. And sure enough, he did.
Spider-Man landed in front of Fisk, who was just taking his white coat and leaving.
"In case you didn't hear, there's been a lockdown," said Fisk, bluntly.
"I know. I need to know where Sylvio Manfredi was last seen," said Spider-Man.
"Rumours are that he's dead. Silvermane was the type of person who kept only his friends close,"
"Silvermane? That's as bad as Kingpin," commented Peter. "Anyways where did he operate from? Or where was he last seen?"
"He was last seen yesterday. Right here. By me," said Fisk.
"Wait, what? He was here?" asked Peter, startled.
Fisk pulled his left collar to his shoulder, revealing his body armour, and the bullet shaped dent it had made.
"I'm guessing he shot you?" asked Peter.
"Precisely. Thanks to the body armour I was wearing I am here right now. But it was definitely him, I'd recognize that arm anywhere," said Fisk.
"Arm? What's up with that?" asked Peter.
Fisk sighed. "A long time ago, before even The Avengers, the two people running the streets were Silvermane and Hammerhead. They were constantly at war, but it never escalated to more than gang violence. That was of course, until one day, there was a massive shooting at Central Park. Manfredi got severely scarred," explained Fisk.
"He then replaced most of his limbs with robotic parts to sustain himself. But he never was at his full capacity, so many people deflected from him and either joined me, or Hammerhead. The final nail in the coffin was when The Punisher went after him. Coincidentally, he was part of the collateral damage that day in Central Park," continued Fisk.
"Wait, Frank Castle's family was murdered on that same day because of Silvermane and Hammerhead?" asked Spider-Man.
"Yeah. He wiped out both Silvermane and Hammerhead's gangs. Thanks to that, Silvermane barely had people in his gang. And the few remaining that stood by him, well…I paid them to get rid of Silvermane," replied Fisk.
"I'm guessing that wasn't by giving him a full paid vacation to the Bahamas?" asked Peter.
"No," said Fisk, bluntly.
"Where was he last seen before he came here? Like when he still had his gang with him?" asked Peter.
Fisk chuckled. "You should ask your Devil friend for that. He used to go after him back in the day," replied Fisk. "Now if you'll excuse me, I must head back home," he continued, walking out of his office.
Spider-Man jumped back out the window and dialed a number.
"Matt? Hey, it's Peter. Yeah, I need your help. Sure. Meet me on that roof where we fought the Frightful Four," said Peter, cutting the call.
Spider-Man swung to the building, but there was no one there. Just then, he heard a pair of boots land behind him. It was Daredevil, in a much more armoured black and red suit.
"Spider-Man! Good to meet you again," he said, shaking his hand.
"Been a long time, Matt. How's Elektra?" asked Peter.
"Still training with The Chaste. I just recently worked with a mutual friend of ours*. The guy wouldn't stop talking," said Daredevil.
(*The Totally Awesome, Invincible Deadpool Season 1 Episode 3, where Deadpool teamed up with Daredevil!)
"I'm guessing Deadpool?"
"Precisely. Anyways, I heard about what's going on in New York, with the lockdown and everything, and the team of villains too," said Matt.
"Yeah, a lot's happened. I need to know what you know on Sylvio-sorry, Silvermane," said Peter.
"That's a name I haven't heard in a while. Silvermane was basically the Wilson Fisk of the past. He ran the black market of gunrunning in the city. I had a few run ins with him. Not fun," said Daredevil.
Peter explained to him who The Altruist was.
"Sounds like it could be him. He did have a flair for the theatrical, and mystery too. We should probably check out his old headquarters in East Harlem, underneath the subway tunnels," suggested Matt.
"Think he'll be there?" asked Peter.
"Honestly, the chances are extremely slim. But we may get some evidence as to what he's up to," replied Daredevil.
The duo made their way to the subway tunnels, which was empty thanks to the lockdown. They made their way deeper into the tunnels, and Matt focused his hearing, tapping on the walls of the tunnels.
Just then, he felt a hollow wall, and could hear something on the other side. He signaled to Peter, who shot two webs and pulled the wall down, revealing a hidden room. The room was as large as a school classroom, with a lot of technology gathering dust.
"Whoa," said Peter. "Most of this is gathering dust, I don't think he was here," said Peter.
"No, he wasn't," said Daredevil, running his fingers down a metal armor, which Silvermane wore during their first fight.
That's when Peter noticed something: a coffin shaped box with didn't have a speck of dust on it.
"Matt…that box there," he said, pointing to it. Daredevil concentrated his senses, and noticed something.
"There's someone in that box!" he said, rushing to help Peter open it.
Inside, was a laptop, and a decomposing body, with maggots and decomposers crawling over their face.
"Holy shit!" said Peter, pinching his nose and closing his eyes.
The smell was even more overpowering for Daredevil, but he managed to power through it and opened up the laptop, which directly opened up Skype.
"Skype? What the-"
Before Peter could finish his sentence, they got a Skype call from someone. Instinctively, they accepted it.
The call started, and there was The Altruist, standing in front of a plain black background.
"Spider-Man, and Daredevil! Good to see you again," said The Altruist, waving his robotic hand.
"Altruist. Or should I say…Silvermane," said Daredevil, clenching his fist.
Silvermane chuckled. "How smart you two are. How much New York has changed in so many years, it's honestly appalling," said Silvermane.
"Who's the body?" asked Peter.
"You're a scientist, aren't you Parker?" asked Silvermane, as Spider-Man raised his eyebrows.
"Don't be surprised. I know everything about you two. Even you, Murdock," replied Silvermane.
Spider-Man slowly took a strand of hair from the decomposing body and pocketed it, while Daredevil questioned Silvermane.
"Why are you doing this? Is this a game to you?" asked Daredevil.
"Look at you two, trying to show your ahead of me, when you don't even know what game you're playing. Do know this: I'm not 10 steps ahead of you, I'm a thousand," said Silvermane. "But that's not what you need to worry about. For now, I'll just say that this conversation has been…quite a bomb!" said Silvermane, hanging up.
Just then, Peter's Spider-Sense tingled wildly, while Matt's Radar Sense picked up something ticking.
"You hear that?" asked Matt.
"I sense it too," said Peter, as they both looked at each other, and then around a room. Both of them fixated their eyes on a certain crate. The crate didn't have any dust on it, and the ticking sound was coming from it.
"BOMB!" they both yelled out, as they raced out of the room and through the hole in the wall. As soon as they jumped out, the whole room exploded.
"Jesus Christ," said Daredevil.
"Ironic," chuckled Peter, as he pulled out the strand of hair.
"Is that from the body?" asked Matt.
"Yep. And I know someone who could help with its identification," said Peter.
Spider-Man swung over to ESU, where Carlie Cooper was sitting on a bench, reading a book on Polymerase Chain Reactions.
"Uh…Miss Cooper?" asked Spider-Man, as Carlie looked up out of her book, and shrieked a little when she saw Spider-Man.
"Spider-Man?! Oh my God, what are you doing here?" she asked, startled.
"Uh, a friend of yours, Peter Parker, he told me you were good with forensic examinations," he said.
"You know Peter? Anyways, yeah I am pretty great at them!" she said, trying not to sound like she was bragging.
"Okay. I need you to examine this and find out the base sequence of the DNA," said Peter, showing the strand of hair. Carlie immediately put on a pair of gloves and took the strand of hair.
"Will do! I'll get started right away. This isn't anything illegal, right?" asked Carlie.
"Oh, I assure you it's not!" said Spider-Man. "Give the results to Mr Parker when you're done. Thanks!" said Spider-Man swinging away again.
"Hey, check it out! Nerd here!" said one of the inmates, as Otto walked to the cafeteria of the prison, ignoring the inmates' harsh words.
"Primitive primates. Their brains never evolved to my level," thought Otto, as he sat down, not taking his meal. He looked around the prison, and saw Flint, Adrian and Quentin sitting together and eating, while Max and Mac joined their table.
"Seems like they're pretty pally with each other," said Norman, walking up to Otto.
"Stay away from me," said Otto, scooching away.
"I'm not trying to instigate anything, Otto. I'm just saying that you're one of us now," said Norman. "And just like me, your talent is being wasted in this shithole," he continued.
Otto grunted. "This is where you belong, not me!" scoffed Otto.
"Remember your third grade teacher's motto. "Teamwork makes the dream work." Just something for you to think about," said Norman, walking away from Otto, leaving him in his own thoughts.
Otto woke up, back in his Sinister Six hideout. He got up from his bed and walked back to the main room, where every member was waiting with The Tinkerer. They were all dressed in their new armor.
"It's a Titanium-Chromium-Osmium alloy. Borderline unbreakable," said Tinkerer, as all their armours definitely seemed to have a much more chrome aesthetic, and definitely seemed unbreakable.
"Good. Now, it's time we assert control on this city. You all know which places to go to. So go!" said Otto, as he smacked Tinkerer with one tentacle, knocking him towards the wall and knocking him out.
The other five villains left to take control of New York, while Otto walked back to his desk, opening a disposable flip phone and calling a number.
"It's done. I've controlled the Six," said Otto.
"Good," said the man.
"Now listen here, Altruist. You better hold up your end of the deal," said Otto.
"I will." Said Manfredi, hanging up. Otto shook his head and put the phone down, moving towards his room.
Near the corner, Scorpion was waiting, and overheard the entire conversation.
"Son of a bitch." He said, under his breath.
Peter walked into the ESU Biology lab, having being called by Carlie Cooper. Thanks to the lockdown, teachers were unable to attend school again.
"Carlie, hey. I'm guessing our mutual friend told you what you do?" he asked.
"Yep. Also, you never told me you knew Spider-Man!" she said, lightly punching his arm.
"I know Spider-Man. There you go," chuckled Peter, as Carlie handed him the DNA reports.
"So do you talk to him often?" asked Carlie.
"Yeah sometimes. I mean I do take his photos," explained Peter.
"Could you…put in a good word for me? I've had a massive crush on him for the past 3 years," she confessed, blushing a little.
"Oh…yeah sure!" said Peter, as Carlie giggled in excitement.
"Also, tell him I went the extra mile, and found out who the DNA belonged to. I'm guessing it was from a dead body?" asked Carlie.
"Yeah, how'd you know?" asked Peter, his curiosity piqued.
"Well, after I got the DNA records, I sorta…hacked into the NYPD Database and found a match with the dead body's DNA," said Carlie.
"Oh wow. Who'd it match?" asked Peter.
"Some guy called Sylvio Manfredi," replied Carlie.
Well, that's the 10th plot twist! This season is going to have many callbacks to previous season. I'm planning on keeping it 13 or 15 episodes for now, but it's going to be packed, so expect longer chapters! Also, if you're wondering about the (*) that I placed, it's an homage to old comic books from the 1980s, when writers would mark an asterisk when any character references something that happened previously. In this case, Daredevil showed up in The Totally Awesome Invincible Deadpool S1 E3!
Also, The Invincible X-Men Episode 1 is out on Rollerparty's profile! Do check it out as it is part of this universe too!
