Chapter 53: A New Hope Part 2
At Yavin 4...
Ezra slowly walked backward and forward as he waited for Lisa to come back.
"You shouldn't worry too much, Ezra."Gwen commented. "Lisa knows what she's doing."
"I know, but I'm just not used to leaving her on her own in a planet as dangerous as Tatooine."Ezra responded with a troubled look.
"Just relax."Zack insisted and squashed his empty can using the Force. "If our dad didn't trust Lisa on her own, he wouldn't let her go on the mission, would he?"
"You have nothing to worry about."Gwen assured with a smile. "She'll back with Obi-Wan before you know it."
Ezra looked down for a moment before responding to his friends.
"I guess so."Ezra answered. "But what about Princess Leia?"
"Our mum and dad are working on creating a rescue group to save her."Zack responded.
Back in Tatooine...
Back in Tatooine...
Lisa carefully lowered Threepio into a hot oil bath that was specially designed for him.
"Thank the maker!"Threepio remarked. "This oil bath is going to feel so good. I've got such a bad case of dust contamination, I can barely move!"
Artoo beeped a muffled reply at Threepio.
Luke was lost in thought as he runs his hand over the damaged fin of a small two-man Skyhopper spaceship resting in a low hangar off the garage.
"It just isn't fair."Luke argued and then stood up. "Oh, Biggs is right. I'm never gonna get out of here."
"I used to think the same thing, Luke."Lisa assured with a hint of amusement. "But that was when I was still a kid."
"But your not going to stay here forever."Luke commented. "Your gonna leave while I have to stay here."
"Is there anything I might do to help?"Threepio asked.
"Well, not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest, or teleport me off this rock."Luke replied.
"I don't think so, sir."Threepio answered. "I'm only a droid and not very knowledgeable about such things. Not on this planet, anyways. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure which planet I'm on."
"Well, if there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from."
"I see, sir."Threepio said.
"Uh, you can call me Luke."Luke suggested.
"I see, sir Luke."Threepio responded.
"Just Luke."Luke laughed lightly.
"And I am Threepio, human-cyborg relations, and this is my counterpart, Artoo."Threepio introduced.
"Hello."Luke greeted.
Artoo beeped in response.
Luke unplugged Artoo and began to scrape several connectors on the robot's head with a chrome pick.
Lisa careful brought Threepio out of the oil tub using the Force (when Luke wasn't looking) and began wiping oil from his bronze body.
"You got a lot of carbon scoring here."Luke commented. "It looks like you boys have seen a lot of action."
"You have no idea."Lisa thought.
"With all we've been through, sometimes I'm amazed we're in as good condition as we are, what with the Rebellion and all."
"You know of the Rebellion against the Empire?"Luke asked in surprise.
Lisa bit her lip since it was too late for her to make Threepio shut his mouth.
"That's how we came to be in your service, if you take my meaning, sir."Threepio admitted.
"Have you been in many battles?"Luke asked.
"Several, I think."Threepio replied. "Actually, there's not much to tell. I'm not much more than an interpreter, and not very good at telling stories. Well, not at making them interesting, anyways."
Lisa shot Threepio a glare as Luke struggled to remove a small metal fragment from Artoo's neck joint.
"Well, my little friend, you've got something jammed in here real good."Luke commented. "Were you on a cruiser or..."
The fragment breaks loose with a snap, sending Luke tumbling head over heels.
He sits up and sees a twelve-inch three- dimensional hologram of Leia Organa being projected from the face of little Artoo.
"Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi."Leia begged. "You're my only hope."
"What's this?"Luke asked.
Artoo looked around and sheepishly beeped an answer for Threepio to translate.
"What is what? He asked you a question."Threepio pointed and pointed at the hologram. "What is that?"
Artoo whistled his surprise as he pretended to just notice the hologram.
"Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi."Leia repeated. "You're my only hope. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope."
"Oh, he says it's nothing, sir."Threepio translated. "Merely a malfunction. Old data. Pay it no mind."
"Who is she?"Luke asked in curiosity. "She's beautiful."
"Yeah, she is."Lisa answered and covered her smile.
During her visits to Alderaan as a child, Lisa remembered she possessed a natural grace and poise that often led court visitors to mistake her for the Princess of Alderaan, while the tomboy Leia was regarded as a domestic girl.
Sometimes Lisa disguised herself as Leia so that the Alderaanian Princess could escape the Aldera Royal Palace to create mischief and visit inappropriate boys.
When Ferus found out about this little scheme, he was upset with Lisa and grounded her with extra lessons of court etiquette and diplomacy to turn her into a proper patrician.
"I'm afraid I'm not quite sure, sir."Threepio answered.
"Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi..."Leia begged.
"I think she was a passenger on our last voyage."Threepio suggested. "A person of some importance, sir. I believe. Our captain was attached to..."
"Is there more to this recording?"Luke asked.
Luke reached out for Artoo but he lets out several frantic squeaked and a whistle.
"Behave yourself, Artoo. You're going to get us in trouble. It's all right, you can trust him. He's our new master."Threepio responded and Artoo whistled. "He says he's the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a resident of these parts. And it's a private message for him. Quite frankly, sir I don't know what he's talking about. Our last master was Captain Antilles, but with what we've been through, this little Artoo unit has become a bit eccentric."
"Obi-Wan Kenobi."Luke said and looked at Lisa. "Is that the person your looking for, Lisa?"
"Yeah."Lisa answered with a nod. "My dad said he lives here in Tatooine."
"I wonder if he means old Ben Kenobi?"Luke suggested.
"I beg your pardon, sir, but do you know what he's talking about?"Threepio questioned.
"Well, I don't know anyone named Obi- Wan, but old Ben lives out beyond the dune sea."Luke admitted. "He's kind of a strange old hermit."
Luke's gazed at Leia's hologram for a few moments.
"I wonder who she is."Luke said. "It sounds like she's in trouble. I'd better play back the whole thing."
Artoo beeped something to Threepio.
"He says the restraining bolt has short circuited his recording system."Threepio translated. "He suggests that if you remove the bolt, he might be able to play back the entire recording."
"I guess you're too small to run away on me if I take this off."Luke declared and takes a wedged bar.
Luke used the wedged bar to pop the restraining bolt off Artoo's side.
"There you go."Luke said.
The hologram of Leia immediately disappeared from view.
"Well, wait a minute. Where'd she go?"Lisa asked. "Bring her back. Play back the entire message."
Artoo beeped an innocent reply as Threepio sat up in embarrassment.
"What message?"Threepio repeated. "The one you're carrying inside your rusty innards!"
Then Beru's voice called out from another room.
"Luke! Lisa!"Beru's voice called out. "Come to dinner!"
"All right, we'll be right there, Aunt Beru."Luke answered.
"Guess the hologram will have to wait."Lisa stated and shrugged.
"I'm sorry, sir, but he appears to have picked up a slight flutter."Threepio replied.
Luke tossed Artoo's restraining bolt on the workbench and hurries out of the room.
"Well, see what you can do with him."Luke instructed. "Me and Lisa will be right back."
Luke and Lisa left the garage as Threepio looked at Artoo.
Beru filled a pitcher with blue milk from a refrigerated container and puts the pitcher on a tray with some bowls of food and started for the dining area.
Luke and Lisa sat with Owen before a table covered with steaming bowls of food as Beru carried in a bowl of red grain.
"You know, I think that R2 unit we bought might have been stolen."Luke responded.
"What makes you think that?"Owen asked.
"Well, me and Lisa stumbled across a recording while I was cleaning him."Luke explained. "He says he belongs to someone called Obi-Wan Kenobi. I thought he might have meant old Ben. Do you know what he's talking about? Well, I wonder if he's related to Ben."
Lisa slowly ate her grain of red rice as she felt Owen breaks loose with a fit of uncontrolled anger.
"That old man's just a crazy old wizard."Owen responded. "Tomorrow I want you to take that R2 unit into Anchorhead and have its memory flushed. That'll be the end of it. It belongs to us now."
"But what if this Obi-Wan comes looking for him?"Luke asked as he poured blue milk in his cup.
"He won't, I don't think he exists any more."Owen admitted. "He died about the same time as your father."
"He knew my father?"Luke asked with a hint of excitement.
"I told you to forget it."Owen replied. "Your only concern is to prepare the new droids for tomorrow. In the morning I want them on the south ridge working out those condensers."
Lisa wasn't sure now what she thought of Luke's uncle.
What was so terrible knowing about Obi-Wan?
"Yes, sir."Luke answered. "I think those new droids are going to work out fine. In fact, I, uh, was also thinking about our agreement about my staying on another season. And if these new droids do work out, I want to transmit my application to the Academy this year."
"You mean the next semester before harvest?"Owen questioned.
"Sure, there're more than enough droids."Luke insisted.
"Harvest is when I need you the most. Only one more season."Owen stated. "This year we'll make enough on the harvest so I'll be able to hire some more hands. And then you can go to the Academy next year."
Luke continues to toy with his food, not looking at his uncle.
"You must understand I need you here, Luke."Owen commented.
"But it's a whole another year."Luke said.
"Look, it's only one more season."Owen assured.
Luke pushe; his half-eaten plate of food aside and stood up.
"Yeah, that's what you said last year when Biggs and Tank left."Luke admitted.
"Where are you going?"Beru asked.
"It looks like I'm going nowhere."Luke answered. "I have to finish cleaning those droids."
Luke began to walk away as Lisa stood up from her seat.
"I'll go help him out."Lisa replied. "Thank you for the dinner, Beru."
Beru nodded as Lisa followed after Luke.
"Owen, he can't stay here forever."Beru replied. "Most of his friends have gone. It means so much to him."
"I'll make it up to him next year."Owen answered. "I promise."
"Luke's just not a farmer, Owen."Beru said with a smile. "He has too much of his father in him."
"That's what I'm afraid of."Owen admitted before he continued eating.
Luke watched the twin suns set as Lisa went up to him.
"I'm sure your uncle means well, Luke."Lisa said.
"Easy for you to say."Luke scoffed. "Your the same age as me and your dad let's you go."
Lisa notices two small graves near the Lars house causing her to look at Luke.
"Who's graves are those, Luke?"Lisa asked gently.
"My Grandfather Cliegg and Grandmother Shmi."Luke answered. "They died before I was even born."
"What about your dad?"Lisa asked.
"I never knew my dad, Lisa."Luke responded with a hint of sadness. "All I know his name was Anakin. Anakin Skywalker."
A stunned look grew on Lisa's face.
"Y-Your dad is Anakin Skywalker."Lisa said with a mixture of shock. "The Anakin Skywalker?"
"You know my dad, Lisa?"Luke asked.
"My dad has only told me stories about him."Lisa answered. "What about your mum?"
"I don't know her name, Lisa."Luke replied. "I never knew her."
"Neither did I."Lisa thought. "Luke is my twin brother! How? I thought I was the only child that Anakin and Padme had!"
Luke and Lisa entered the garage, only to discover the two droids were no where in sight.
Luke takes a small control box from his utility belt similar to the one the Jawas were carrying.
The blonde haired boy activated the box, which create a low hum and Threepio let out a short yell as he popped up from behind the Skyhopper spaceship.
"Relax, Threepio."Lisa responded with a frown. "It's just us."
"What are you doing hiding there?"Luke asked.
Threepio stumbled forward, but Artoo was still nowhere in sight.
"It wasn't my fault, sir!"Threepio protested. "Please don't deactivate me! I told him not to go, but he's faulty, malfunctioning; kept babbling on about his mission!"
"Artoo is gone?!"Lisa questioned with a hint of anger.
"Oh, no!"Luke panicked.
Luke and Lisa raced out of the garage followed by Threepio.
Luke scanned the landscape with his macrobinoculars to look for the R2 droid.
"Do you see him?"Lisa asked.
"No."Luke replied. "How could I be so stupid? He's nowhere in sight. Blast it!"
"Pardon me, sir, but couldn't we go after him?"Threepio questioned.
"It's too dangerous with all the Sand people around."Luke answered. "We'll have to wait until morning."
"Luke, I'm shutting the power down for the night!"Owen's voice yelled out from the homestead plaza.
"All right, I'll be there in a few minutes."Luke replied and looked at Threepio. "Boy, am I gonna get it. He takes one final look across the dim horizon. That little droid is going to cause me a lot of trouble."
"Oh, he excels at that, sir."Threepio complemented.
"Hope Artoo will be alright out there in the middle of the night."Lisa said worriedly.
The Next Morning...
Luke and Lisa rode off early in the morning in the speeder to find Artoo with Threepio on one of the back seats.
"Look it, there's a droid on the scanner."Luke stated. "Dead ahead. It might be our little R2 unit. Hit the accelerator!"
"Got it!"Lisa responded.
Lisa made the speeder go faster and they arrived at Artoo's location.
"Artoo!"Lisa remarked in relief and parked on the floor of a massive canyon. "There you are!"
Luke, Lisa and Threepio went off the speeder and went up to Artoo.
"Hey, whoa, just where do you think you're going?"Luke asked.
Artoo whistled a feeble reply as Threepio posed menacingly behind the little runaway.
"Master Luke here is your rightful owner."Threepio argued. "We'll have no more of this Obi-Wan Kenobi jibberish...and don't talk to me about your mission, either. You're fortunate he doesn't blast you into a million pieces right here."
"It's alright."Luke assured as he held his long laser rifle. "But I think we'd better go."
Lisa suddenly sensed something approaching as Artoo began to beep and shake widely.
"What's wrong with him now?"Luke questioned.
"Oh my...sir, he says there are several creatures approaching from the southeast."Threepio admitted.
Luke swings his rifle into position and looked to the south.
"Sand people or worst."Luke stated. "Come on, let's have a look. Come on."
Lisa gripped her hidden lightsabers tightly and followed Luke to a ledge overlooking the canyon, followed by Threepio.
Luke whipped out his macrobinoculars and focused them on some large animals.
"There are two Banthas down there but I don't see any...wait a second, they're Sand people all right."Luke complemented. "I can see one of them now."
Suddenly something huge moves in front of his field of view.
Before Luke, Lisa or Threepio can react, a Tusken Raider loomed over them.
Threepio was startled and backs away, right off the side if the cliff.
The Tusken Raider brings down his curved, double-pointed gaderffii, but Luke managed to block the blow with his laser rifle, which was smashed to pieces.
The creature knocked Luke unconscious as Lisa quickly took out one of her lightsabers to help her twin brother.
Lisa removed one of the raiders' arms with her purple lightsaber and it screamed in pain before the other creature hit her in the head dazing her slightly.
The blonde haired girl felt herself being dragged along the desert floor with Luke by the Tusken Raiders.
Artoo forced himself into the shadows of a small alcove in the rocks as the vicious Sand people walked past carrying the Skywalker siblings, who were dropped in a heap before the speeder.
The Sand people began ransacking the speeder, throwing parts and supplies in all directions.
Lisa pretend to be unconscious as she carefully tried to reach out for her lightsaber to slash down the Sand People.
Suddenly a great howling moan was heard echoing throughout the canyon which sends the Sand People fleeing in terror.
Lisa carefully stood up and brought back the lightsaber she dropped back to her hand.
The hooded figure removed his hood, revealing a grey bearded old man with kind looking eyes.
"It's alright, Lisa."Obi-Wan assured. "I'm a friend. You can lower your weapon."
"How did you know my name?"Lisa said in surprise. "I didn't-"
Artoo made a slight beeping sound causing Obi-Wan to turn and look at him.
"Hello there."Obi-Wan greeted. "Come here, my little friend. Don't be afraid."
"Artoo, you can come out."Lisa encouraged. "Don't be afraid."
Artoo slowly waddled over to where Lisa stood as Obi-Wan puts his hand on Luke's forehead.
"Don't worry, he'll be all right."Obi-Wan replied.
"How do you know who I am, sir?"Lisa questioned.
"Ferus and I were there on the day you and Luke were born."Obi-Wan replied. "You have Padme's eyes."
"I get that a lot."Lisa said quietly as she placed away her lightsaber.
Luke let out a groan as he slowly woke up.
"Rest easy, son, you've had a busy day."Obi-Wan instructed. "You're fortunate you're still in one piece."
"Ben? Ben Kenobi!"Luke remarked as he stood up. "Boy, am I glad to see you!"
"The Jundland wastes are not to be traveled lightly."Obi-Wan commented. "Tell me young Luke, what brings you and your friend out this far?"
Artoo beeped as he went next to Lisa.
"Oh, this little droid."Luke responded. "I think he's searching for his former master. I've never seen such devotion in a droid before... there seems to be no stopping him. He claims to be the property of an Obi-Wan Kenobi. Is he a relative of yours? Do you know who he's talking about?"
Obi-Wan pondered this for a moment, scratching his scruffy beard.
"Obi-Wan Kenobi...Obi-Wan?"Obi-Wan said. "Now thats a name I haven't heard in a long time...a long time."
"I think my uncle knew him."Luke replied. "He said he was dead."
"Oh, he's not dead...not yet."Obi-Wan admitted.
"You know him?"Lisa asked.
"Well, of course, I know him."Obi-Wan replied."He's me. I haven't gone by the name Obi-Wan since oh, before you and your sister were born."
"My sister?"Luke said.
"He means me, Luke."Lisa admitted. "Anakin Skywalker was my father too."
"No way."Luke chuckled. "So we're actually twins?"
"Yeah."Lisa agreed with a small smile. "But I grew up in Naboo with our mother's family."
Luke looked at Obi-Wan.
"Then the droid does belong to you."Luke suggested, gesturing to Artoo.
"Don't seem to remember ever owning a droid."Obi-Wan commented. "Very interesting..."
Obi-Wan looked up at the overhanging cliffs.
"I think we better get indoors."Obi-Wan suggested. "The Sand people are easily startled but they will soon be back and in greater numbers."
Artoo lets out a beep causing Luke and Lisa to remember something.
"Threepio!"Luke and Lisa said in unison.
Artoo stood at the edge of a large sand pit and began to chatter away in electronic whistles and beeps.
Luke, Lisa and Obi-Wan stood over a very dented and tangled Threepio lying half buried in the sand.
One of Threepio's arms were broken off.
Luke tried to revive the inert robot by shaking him and then flips a hidden switch on his back several times until finally the mechanical man's systems turn on.
"Where am I? I must have taken a bad step..."Threepio said.
"Can you stand?"Lisa asked. "We've got to get out of here before the Sand people return."
"I don't think I can make it, Lady Lisa."Threepio responded. "You and Master Luke go on. There's no sense in you risking yourself on my account. I'm done for."
Artoo gives a beeping sound.
"No, you're not."Luke answered. "What kind of talk is that?"
Luke and Lisa help Threepio to his feet as Artoo beeped at them.
At Kenobi's Dwelling...
Lisa explained her reason to be in Tatooine to Luke, who was in one corner repairing Threepio's arm as Obi-Wan sat down thinking.
"So that's why I couldn't tell you that I was a jedi and part of the Rebellion Alliance when I got here."Lisa explained. "My adopted father, Ferus Olin, told me not to for my own safety."
"Your very good hiding it, Lisa."Obi-Wan complemented. "When I met your mother, she did the same thing when she was young. And your father did also the same sort of thing when he fought in the Clone Wars."
"No, our father didn't fight in the wars."Luke said as he fixed Threepio's broken arm. "He was a navigator on a spice freighter."
"That's not true, Luke."Lisa remarked. "He was a Jedi Knight."
"She's right. That's what your uncle told you."Obi-Wan responded. "He didn't hold with your father's ideals. Thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved."
"You fought in the Clone Wars?"Luke asked.
"Yes, I was once a Jedi Knight the same as your father."Obi-Wan complemented.
"I wish I'd known him."Luke replied.
"Me too and the same with our mum."Lisa said sadly.
"He was the best star-pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior."Obi-Wan admitted and smiled at the Skywalker twins. "Lisa, you have your father's Jedi skills and your mother's diplomatic skills. I understand you've become quite a good pilot yourself, Luke. And he was a good friend. Which reminds me. I have something for you."
Obi-Wan gets up and goes to a old chest as Luke finished repairing Threepio and started to fit the restraining bolt back on.
"I don't need to give one to Lisa as it seems she already has one."Obi-Wan commented as he took out a lightsaber from the chest. "Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn-fool idealistic crusade like your father did."
"Sir, if you or Lady Lisa not be needing me, I'll close down for a while."Threepio said.
"Sure."Luke insisted. "Go ahead."
Threepio began powering himself down as Luke and Lisa watched Obi-Wan came forward with their father's lightsaber.
"What is it?"Luke asked.
"It's your father's lightsaber."Obi-Wan replied. "This is the weapon of a Jedi knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon for a more civilised age. For over a thousand generations, the Jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic, before the dark times, before the Empire."
Luke and Lisa sat next to Obi-Wan.
"How did our father die?"Luke asked.
Obi-Wan swallowed hard as if it was a difficult question to answer.
"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights."Obi-Wan stated. "He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force."
"The Force?"Luke said.
"The Force is what gives Jedi their power, Luke."Lisa exclaimed. "It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together."
Artoo made beeping sounds causing Obi-Wan to earn his attention.
"Now, let's see if we can't figure out what you are, my little friend."Obi-Wan commented. "And where you come from."
"Me and Lisa saw part of the message he was..."Luke started.
Luke was cut short as the recorded image of the beautiful young Rebel princess was projected from Artoo's face.
"I seem to have found it."Obi-Wan finished.
Luke stopped his work as the princess' hologram image flickered before his eyes.
"That is Princess Leia of Alderaan."Lisa said with a smile. "And a childhood friend of mine."
"General Kenobi, years ago you served my father and Jedi Knight, Ferus Olin in the Clone Wars."Leia responded. "Now they're begging you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. And my friend, Lisa Naberrie, has decided to accompany the droid to you. Her father and mine will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope."
Then the message ended and the hologram of Leia vanished.
"So what is your answer, General Kenobi?"Lisa asked. "Your heard Leia. We need help and we need to get the droid to Senator Organa."
"Indeed, Lisa."Obi-Wan said and looked at Luke. "You must learn the ways of the Force if you're to come with me to Alderaan."
"Alderaan? I'm not going to Alderaan."Luke commented. "I've got to go home. It's late, I'm in for it as it is."
"I need your help, Luke."Obi-Wan declared. "Lisa and the Princess need your help. I'm getting too old for this sort of thing."
"Listen, I can't get involved. I've got work to do."Luke protested. "It's not that I like the Empire. I hate it. But there's nothing I can do about it right now. It's such a long way from here."
"That's your uncle talking."Obi-Wan replied.
"My uncle."Luke said and rubbed the back of his neck. "How am I ever going to explain this?"
"Learn about the Force, Luke."Obi-Wan insisted.
"Look, I can take you and Lisa as far as Anchorhead."Luke commented. "You two can get a transport there to Mos Eisley or wherever you're going."
"Hang on. You did say you wanted to get out of here yesterday, Luke."Lisa reminded. "But whatever you decide on what you think is right, I'll understand."
Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter:)
