Will stared at his sister in law's mangled form laying lifeless on the gaurney. As quickly as everyone in the room was moving, it seemed like all slow motion to Will. He couldn't focus, all he could hear was heartbeat pounding in his ears. How…how could he tell Jay he did nothing to help her. He was a god damn doctor, it was his job to save people and yet here she was, his own fucking family, and he was useless.
"Will, you gotta go." Crockett said, pushing him towards the door.
"No, no, I…I can fix her…I have to fix her."
"Will, we can't let you work on her, you know that."
"I need to stay, please. I'll…I'll stay out of the way, please." He begged.
Everyone looked at each other silently, unsure of their next move.
"You stay out of the way, no interfering."
Will stood off to the side and watched the flurry of people crowd Olivia. Calling out what tests to run, what was visible to the eye, what was possibly wrong. All Will could do was watch the monitors for her brain and heart. Brain activity was unresponsive and her heart was barely registering. Deep down he knew survival was…survival was going to be the rarest of miracles. But what other choice did he have, but to hope. To hope he wouldn't have to call his brother and tell him his wife was really dead, that his nephew no longer had a mother. That the ray of sunshine, and laughter and wild sense of humor that she brought to their lives was gone. That they'd no longer have the sense of a complete life. That they'd destroyed to their cores yet again.
Will wasn't sure how long he stood there, but the persistent sound of a flat lining beep checked him back into reality. Crockett was standing in front of him, covered in Olivia's blood, lips moving but Will couldn't focus on the sound.
"Wh-what did y-you say?"
"Go call Jay, and tell him to come here, don't give him any details over the phone."
"I cant leave her. She's my sister."
"Will, you don't want to be in here when we call it."
Will's knees buckled and Choi helped him from the room and to the doctors lounge. Will sat alone staring at his phone, with Jay's contact open. Will took a breath before hitting call, and the phone barely rang once before Jay answered.
"Will…Will are you there? What's going on?"
"You need to get to Med?"
"Will-"
"I cant say over the phone."
"Okay…okay…I'm on my way."
Will could hear the fear in his brother voice.
"Jay?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you buddy."
Jay rushed to her house the second he was off shift. She had sounded strange all day. Her texted her short, her voice was cold. When he asked what was wrong, every time she would say nothing and then hang up. Her house was silent. That never ever happened, there was always a tv on or music, something to fill the silence. She hated the silence.
Jay emptied his pockets onto the kitchen counter and called out for her, but was met with no response. He searched the house for her and found nothing. Walking back into the kitchen, he saw her sitting outside, dangling her feet in the in-ground pool. Quietly and gently he walked out back and sat beside her, sticking his feet into the summer warmed water.
"Hey there beautiful." He greeted.
She turned to look at him. Eyes reddened, puffy and glossy with tears.
"Oh babygirl, what's wrong? Come here."
Jay put an arm around her and pulled her into him where she just cried.
"I don't wanna go."
"Go where Livi? Where are you going?"
"I don't wanna die Jay."
Jay pulled back and gave her a confused look.
"Die? What- what is, what are you talking about?"
"It hurts, it all hurts, and I'm not ready to go."
"Livi, you're scaring me here."
Jay was scared. James slept in the back seat as he drove, and he was terrified. Will gave him no information. When they got to the hospital, Natalie whisked away his sleeping son and left Jay to be with Will. They stood briefly in silence.
"Will, you gotta tell me what's going on."
Will opened and closed his mouth multiple times.
"Will." Jay urged.
"We, uh…we found Olivia's body outside the hospital a few hours ago-"
Jay was out of the lounge and running around the ED floor screaming Olivia's name. He came to a dead stop outside the hybrid OR. Will caught up to him and stood solemnly next to his brother. After a minute Will eased his brother into the room. The sound of the breathing machine was deafening.
"The machines are keeping her alive for the time being."
"Wha-when will she wake up?"
The question gutted Will to his core.
"She most likely wont Jay, there was nothing we could do…nothing I could do and i- I'm so fucking sorry."
Jay dropped to his knees as he let out a broken scream and began to sob
"Come on, wake up." Jay said poking Olivia's nose.
"Jay,' she groaned, 'go back to sleep."
Olivia rolled over and tucked her head under his pillow.
"Wakey wakey sleepy head. The Easter bunny brought you presents."
Jay was never this cheery in the morning, he hasted mornings. Confused, Olivia sat up.
"What are you talking about?"
"You should see your Easter basket, and all the eggs are hidden."
She had the biggest childlike smile plastered on her face. Jay couldn't help but smile at her. She loved every holiday and somehow always managed to try and make it special. But this, this was way out of character for him.
"Who are you, and what have you done with my Jay?" She joked.
"Come on, there isn't much time!" He urged.
"Before what? What's the hurry?"
"Before you crossover."
Suddenly she felt light, like she weighed nothing and could float away. She couldn't feel the bed beneath her or the warmth of the comforter.
"What's happening? What's wrong with me?"
"You're dead." Jay said, as if it were nothing.
"What? I…no, that's- no this is a dream."
"Just a matter of time before it's official. Come, lets go find the eggs."
Jay sat in the chair beside Olivia's bed, holding onto her hand. It was broken, and bloodied and ice cold. Such a harsh difference to what it normally is…or was. She looked nothing like the girl he loved so deeply, how could they be sure its her? Jay refused to believe it was, Will confirmed it by the tattoo on her right arm. Jay argued that it could be forged, or anyone could have that. Will also pointed out the small 'j' tattooed on the inside of her left ring finger that was usually covered by her wedding rings. But he wouldn't believe it. She wouldn't leave him, she just wouldn't.
"We can keep her on the machines for as long as you want. Considering you're family, you'll have all the time you need. We'll move her to a private room upstairs, so you and James will be more comfortable as well." Sharon Goodwin stated.
"I don't want James to see her like this."
"Jay, he needs-" will started.
"He shouldn't have to remember her like this. He shouldn't have to see her for the last time like this."
"We can clean her up." Sharon offered.
Jay sadly shook his head no.
"Can someone take James home?"
"Of course, we can arrange that." Sharon said.
"I have to call the team."
"I'll take care of everything. You just focus on your family, the both of you."
Sharon left, and will put a hand on Jay's shoulder.
"What can I do Jay."
The tears spilled down Jay's cheeks.
"I just wanna be alone."
Will nodded and silently closed the sliding glass door as he left. Hearing the door shut, Jay completely lost it. Sobs racked his body.
"You cant leave me, baby please, I cant do this without you. I cant raise our son alone. We still have so much of our life that we need to do together. Have more babies, travel, grow old. I need to see your smile every morning when I open my eyes, I need it to be the last thing I see before I close my eyes at night, I need to hear the beautiful sound of your laughter, and your terrible singing on Sunday mornings or on trips up to the cabin. Livi, I just need you."
Jay squeezed her hand and kissed her knuckles.
She was dead, she was really dead. She stood in the horribly cold hospital room watching Jay beg her not to leave. She couldn't feel his touch or the feel of his lips on her hand. When she reach out for him, its like he couldn't feel her at all either.
"I'm scared Jay, I don't know what's happening and I'm scared."
