A/N: Hello dear readers. I realize that again, this update took practically a month to come out, and as I mentioned in my previous notes, there was just so much going on that getting this chapter written had taken much longer than I expected. I had also meant for this to be dropped yesterday, but it just didn't happen as I had unfortunately gotten too busy. Plus, I had a real tough time deciding on exactly which direction I wanted to take this next serious of events, which contributed to the delay, but hopefully, it will pave the way to some exciting events. :0 Considering what I have planned, this should be a very interesting arc, so strap in for the ride. ;)
To note, this chapter, as with the last few, is again, getting uploaded without getting checked by my beta. Unfortunately, SweetsDreamer has been dealing with quite a lot of stressful events, so getting caught up is taking some time. She is slowly backlogging older chapters, so I will be uploading the revised copies once she manages to finish them. Still, she deserves so much thanks and praise for all her devotion to beta the majority of RoF's chapters.
Summary: Since their success with ambitious doctor and retrieving six sets of eyes, a new lead surfaces on the remaining ten pairs. Now Kurapika has learned of new information that will take him and Chrollo on a mission they least expect.
It was a slow process to get the day started as the light streaming down from between the partially open curtains had become a source of offense and reluctance. The palm of a slender, effeminate hand rose to act as a shield, thin fingers tightly held together as if parting them at any moment would result in an ill-begotten end. And even as the sun began to brighten the room, any motivation to get up had instantly dissolved.
Kurapika groaned and pulled the sheets up higher around him, the rays nearly touching the edges of his eyes, which only served to irritate the young man even more. Usually, he was an early morning riser, jumping up at the ass crack of dawn, but he had been feeling run down lately and excessively spent so that moving out of the sanctity of bed was the last thing he wanted to do.
After what had transpired the night before, Kurapika's mind was persistent on getting as much rest as possible.
So, he pulled the silken cover over himself to the point it reached his chin. If given a chance, Kurapika was sure it would have gone over the top of his head. The idea made him snort.
Instead, he turned over, and seconds later, a muscular arm slid around his bare midsection. The sensation of it nearly made him forget there was another presence in the bed with him. But then he was pulled back gently against a firm, sturdy chest, which quickly reminded Kurapika of just how intimately close he was to the man who laid beside him and that neither of them was clothed.
Not that it gave him any reason to complain. Quite to the contrary. Kurapika had grown quite used to - and rather enjoyed - sleeping naked with his affectionate lover. Chrollo was also warm and made the nights seem less lonely, which Kurapika had become accustomed to after so many years alone. While there were times that he liked the temporary quiet and interlude of solitariness, the aspect of having someone to fill in the void that isolation brought was something he preferred.
Early on, Kurapika had wanted nothing more than to walk his path alone and to slip away forgotten once it was all said and done.
Now, he had every reason to want companionship and love.
The soft brush of lips and dusting of breath over the shell of his ear had caused Kurapika to shiver. He closed his eyes, nearly forgetting his current predicament, and breathed out slowly. Kurapika didn't openly admit it, but having Chrollo's arms around him further exhausted any will to move. He was much more comfortable as he was.
"You don't have to get up just yet." The words that got whispered into Kurapika's ear began with a hum and ended on a more persistent note. He had already realized that Chrollo decided on coaxing him into remaining between the sheets so they could simply lay within each other's embrace. And while he knew that lingering would eventually no longer be an option, Kurapika wanted to relish the moment for as long as possible.
It wasn't too often where they got to partake in moments of reprieve - like they were now - since their journey had been continuously perilous with them constantly on the run. More times than not, Kurapika found himself meeting one crisis after another, each instance almost met by some unhinged individual or exceedingly dangerous situation. He breathed out slowly. For so long as he could remember, Kurapika had dealt with one problem after another, especially where the stakes were high and not always worth the outcome.
There were even points when the stress of those encounters had weighed so heavily on him, Kurapika was sure that he would break at any given moment.
Because of that, it was the very reason why he had chosen to take every opportunity there was just to recuperate. While he never openly admitted it, and despite Chrollo's constant injunction that he should, Kurapika liked the brief occasions of peace from the chaos they faced. It was comforting, even if the break was only temporary.
The feeling of Chrollo's arms around his body made Kurapika relax as his head tilted back against the man's shoulder. Each wisp of breath that his lover released over his bare skin only incited another tremor to waver through his entire being. Kurapika closed his eyes and drank in the pleasure that engulfed him. "Are you sure there isn't any hurry for us to leave?" Kurapika questioned, though his voice had betrayed him when the last few words he spoke were more of a sultry purr than an actual inquiry.
His question made Chrollo raise an eyebrow, but he merely leaned in to plant soft, tender kisses along the expanse of Kurapika's bare neck. "Well," he began as each contact of his lips caused goosebumps to form, "there is but without any urgency this time. Unlike before." Chrollo continued trailing down towards Kurapika's shoulder, and the sound of his lover's heavy breathing made a smile form over his tan lips. "Besides, I highly doubt that Mikel will come searching for us with any attempt to retrieve the eyes." Once there, he lingered over a particular spot for a moment and breathed in Kurapika's sweet scent. The aroma of patchouli and lemongrass came through, the combination tantalizing Chrollo before he bit down roughly on the area to suckle upon it. "We can leave whenever we are ready to. Doing so will give the three of us the chance to rest and recover." He vocalized after getting satisfied by the slowly blooming purplish hickey forming on Kurapika's skin.
Marking his lover, especially in that fashion, was something that Chrollo enjoyed doing. Not only was it to show that Kurapika belonged to someone, but it was just another form of expressing his love for the younger man. While doing so was a bit more of a crude way to show it, Kurapika never seemed to object and always took pleasure in the act every time he did it. This time was no different.
Without warning, Chrollo then moved away from Kurapika, only to pin him down against the bed before slipping between the younger man's slender legs. The look of surprise on his lover's visage made him smirk, but Chrollo only continued watching Kurapika amusingly.
However, the abrupt change in their position didn't perturb Kurapika for too long, as he soon stared up at Chrollo with a gratified expression. Naturally, seeing the other man looking so smug would often frustrate him, as he hated it when Chrollo tried to get the upper hand, but now, he felt anything but.
Instead, Kurapika let his pale lips curl into a mischievous smile, and he grappled Chrollo's shoulders before using his weight to show his lover just how wrong he was. It only took Kurapika a few split seconds to flip their views of the room as Chrollo was soon beneath him while he straddled the older man's naked waist. "Is that so?" Kurapika questioned, his voice like silk. "Well, if that is the case—"
He stopped mid-sentence and dipped in close, hands firmly planted on Chrollo's chest, his face just mere centimeters from his lover's. Frigid cerulean eyes bore down into haunting grey, those abyssal depths sucking Kurapika in as they always had, which left utterly enthralled. Only a few seconds passed while in such a state, and the corners of his mouth hooked up ever so slightly right before it locked with Chrollo's own. His lover's taste instantly permeated Kurapika's senses and was something he readily drank heavily in despite the contact between them was evanescent.
"Let's take our time then," Kurapika finalized before Chrollo could even respond. Thin fingers trailed down the older man's muscular chest, the tips ghosting intently over taut flesh. He felt Chrollo tremble, the body beneath him reacting as he explored every part of it that he could, even to areas where his lover was most receptive. Doing so had earned Kurapika a long, drawn-out moan from between Chrollo's parted lips, those eyes now watching him with hunger and desire.
Seeing the older man unravel before him, those staunch and unwavering boundaries gradually crumbling away as everything that made up Chrollo's calm exterior and overconfident personality melted into nothingness beneath Kurapika's controlling touch. There were instances where Chrollo had preeminence over him and others where he reigned his lover.
Albeit they maintained equal balance in their relationship, both in and out of the bedroom, Kurapika readily took delight from it each time. Though he couldn't dispute that Chrollo did as well.
It was pretty much proven when Kurapika decided to grind down against Chrollo's hips.
"As you wish." He responded and soon felt Chrollo begin to harden against the cleft of his ass. Kurapika could quickly tell that his lover was just as eager as he was, though sharing intimacy together was one way for them to relieve stress. "Then we shall," Chrollo added, his smirk broadening.
Their lips met again, yet this time it was full of ferocity and carnivorous passion. And while their hands traversed over each other, desperation and need accenting their movements, everything around them faded away as it was only them who currently mattered.
"So, we still have no leads on where the next pair of eyes are located?" Kurapika questioned while idly rotating the dark grey mug between his restless hands. He and Chrollo had decided to sit at a small café after they had finally gotten out of bed, showered, and then dressed. Amar had wanted to join them, but considering that he would stick out despite being perceived as a 'magical beast,' they all agreed it was best he stayed behind.
The memory of what happened between him and Chrollo earlier still lingered in the back of Kurapika's mind, and the very thought of it caused him to blush at specific points.
He focused on his coffee in a vain attempt to conceal that fact.
Doing so hadn't stopped Chrollo from noticing.
It was still beautiful. How the shade of flourishing crimson sat in stark comparison to Kurapika's porcelain-hued skin and the way it accented his breathtaking eyes left Chrollo in awe. He always worshipped just how divine Kurapika was. "None as of yet. Shalnark has been searching pretty regularly, but he hasn't gotten a lead on anything." Chrollo sat his mug down and proceeded to take a bite of the food from his plate. The seafood risotto was delectable. "I am sure he will come across something before too long." He added reassuringly.
Chrollo didn't blame his lover for how concerned he was; Kurapika wanted to find the remaining Scarlet Eyes and as quickly as possible. He knew they were getting close to collecting them all as they had managed to acquire quite a few already. It wouldn't be much longer before Kurapika's goal was completed.
Well, Kurapika's goal was also his goal. Chrollo wanted to do whatever it took to make up for what he had done in the past to his precious Kurta lover.
The response made Kurapika snort, but he still retained faith in the skills of Chrollo's subordinate. Although Shalnark was strange, quirky, and plain weird, he seemed to be one of the spiders that were easier to get along with. The blond tech geek wasn't as aggressive or hostile towards him as a few of them were, like the man who lacked eyebrows or that loud-mouthed Samurai. Kurapika wasn't exactly eager to work with them in the future, as he knew that he would, since he enjoyed just being alone with Chrollo, but it wasn't always going to be that way.
Eventually, they would reunite with the rest of the Ryodan, and Kurapika would continue working towards his other goal of earning their trust while bridging the gap separating them. There was no use trying to avoid it anyway, not that he hadn't already made his decision.
Kurapika sighed. "I just hope it's soon as we are down to the remaining ten pairs. While I agree that I am enjoying our temporary respite, I would like to resume our search for the eyes before we have the chance to stagnate." He took a quick sip of his coffee, then focused on his plate as well. It was pork slices in a type of cream sauce he wasn't familiar with, but Chrollo had convinced him to try it, so Kurapika ate it without hesitation. The dish was quite good.
"I don't think you have much to worry about, babe. Granted, I know that we have already reclaimed twenty-six pairs of the Scarlet Eyes, and I do not believe it will take us very long to acquire the last ten." Chrollo set his fork down to pick up the cup again before taking another draw from the liquid within.
It was evident that Kurapika was impatient despite what had transpired between them only mere hours before. He assumed the exertion from their session of intense, rough sex would have been enough to quell Kurapika for longer than it had. And while it did make his luscious angel more cooperative and less grumpy, Chrollo realized it didn't entirely cage the younger man's wild spirit.
Not that he wanted to anyway. Kurapika was capricious and temperamental, but Chrollo still adored how truly spunky his lover really was.
And perhaps the younger man was already aware of that fact. Yet, he made Kurapika feel good at the very least.
"Hopefully, you are right. I do have faith in you and the others; it's just that we are getting so close to completing this mission, and I can't help that I want to continue without delay. The sooner I can lay them to rest, the better."
Kurapika.
Instantly, Chrollo replaced the mug onto the table, his fingers slipping away before reaching over to brush his lover's hair away from his lovely visage. The sight of any sorrow in those lively eyes bothered him. "I understand, angel. And we will trust me. I did give you my word that I would endure this with you. I have no plans on changing that now. We will get it done." Chrollo then tucked the wayward strands behind Kurapika's ear before pulling away. The fact that it had gotten quite long was something that he noticed. Perhaps they could get it cut before leaving Talanite Ridge.
A somber expression crossed over Kurapika's face, and he smiled, although faintly. Remaining positive and confident had always been difficult as he struggled to keep a univocal mindset. There were instances where Kurapika sensed himself falter, especially in his composure, but Chrollo somehow managed to keep him from slipping entirely. It was hard not to give in at times.
Though having someone who cared about him - and that he cared for - made it easier, even if a little.
"Please don't worry. All will come together, and the light truth will burn through the darkness and show you the way. The end isn't far."
"We will wait for you, no matter the cost or how long it takes. Until then, keep on moving forward."
"Don't doubt yourself or lose your courage. Stay strong and vigilant."
"My son..."
Even the voices of those he was devoting everything to, his clan, rose in clamor within his mind. They were always present, guiding and pushing him, their words always encouraging. Though, the last voice that rang out amid the ensuing silence made him stop short and blink. Kurapika nearly felt a twinge of pain waver through him.
"...we love you."
So much time had passed since he last heard her voice, the words melodious and soothing like chimes on the wind. Holding back the tears from breaking through the dams which held them was difficult, but knowing that his clan was still with him, if even in spirit, comforted him. The traces of his once somber expression bled into a more relieved smile. "I believe you," Kurapika commented and felt the remnants of Chrollo's fingers upon his skin. The man's touch was always soothing. "And trust that it will. Sometimes it's just hard not to lose focus."
Right after the words left his mouth, Kurapika sensed the soft brush of skin as Chrollo's hand came to rest against his cheek before traveling to the underside of his skin. The older man's thumb swept along the bridge of his jaw tenderly. "Good," Chrollo emulated, a pleased grin etching over his lips, "because I would have persisted otherwise. You know how I feel when you doubt yourself, particularly your aptitude, love." The top of his thumb inched up right to where the base of Kurapika's bottom lip was, and he tugged on it ever so slightly, causing it to dip before retracting his hand once more.
If anything, Kurapika would have gotten the point by his gesture.
"Of course you would have," he responded sarcastically only seconds later, "because you're that kind of bastard. But I still love you for it." Kurapika leaned back and met Chrollo's eyes intently but faced his lover with newfound temerity. One thing he still had was his conviction, even if the initial reasons for it had changed.
Kurapika was glad that he met Chrollo and got to see the real man that he was. Perhaps he still hated the person that Chrollo once was, but who he was now, Kurapika loved with all his heart. There wasn't anything in the world that could change it. Chrollo was special to him, just as he was special to Chrollo.
They complimented each other and in so many ways.
What pessimism there was quickly faded away, and the grin on Chrollo's countenance turned into a near shit-eating smirk. Maybe he was pleased with the outcome, but convincing Kurapika not to be so calumniatory of himself wasn't always easy. His lover tended to be overly reproachful.
Chrollo hoped to, at some point, break Kurapika of that habit.
For now, he settled for countering the younger man whenever he needed. "I am," Chrollo cited and reached for his mug again, "but you also know me so well, babe. It's expected that you would. Now, let's finish our meals because I think we should make a stop at the coiffeuse before returning to our hotel."
Moments later, his phone buzzed, and Chrollo swiftly retrieved it from inside his pocket. The screen instantly lit up, and across it was a text message from Shalnark. He read it promptly.
Today at 12:22 pm: Danchou, I need to speak with you soon as it's convenient. I think that I have a possible lead on the eyes, but you might want to hear this.
Strange, Chrollo thought as he read over the message a second time, what could be so urgent about it that he requires my immediate attention? He tapped his chin in thought, then turned to look over at Kurapika when he realized his lover was staring at him intently. Kurapika raised an eyebrow.
"Is that-?" He began and was swiftly cut off.
"Yes. It's a message from Shalnark. He says that he may have a new lead on the eyes and wants to speak with me whenever I am able." Chrollo drained the remainder of his coffee and proceeded to finish what was left on his plate.
Even though his comrade demanded his attention, surely he, and his lover, could wait just a bit longer? It was early yet, and he hadn't finished his meal. Chrollo wasn't about to waste good food, and not to mention, Kurapika still needed a haircut. Surely it wasn't too imperative that he could at least do both before dealing with their next mission. It had been such a long time since either of them had taken a decent break.
"And?" Kurapika questioned, his tone firm.
"And I was thinking of discussing it with him after we finish here and get your haircut. I know that you're itching to get moving again, but let's wrap up what we are doing here before proceeding forward."
Kurapika's eyebrow rose even higher, his demeanor almost scrutinizing. For Chrollo to suggest putting a halt on their mission to galavant around was inconceivable. It made him scoff. "You can't be serious?! We're just going to sit around while there is a potential lead on where the next pair of the eyes are?" Kurapika clicked his tongue at the ridiculous notion. He had already allowed them to waste time as is.
The sudden outburst didn't make Chrollo flinch as he was used to his lover's random conniption fits. He merely took another bite of his food, intent on eating what was left. "Indeed I am. I paid for two perfectly good meals, and we have neglected for some time to get your hair cut. I won't back down, Kura." Falling silent afterward, Chrollo turned away from Kurapika's steaming, pissed-off expression to resume eating his food.
No matter how angry his lover got, he wasn't about to let it sway his decision. Kurapika knew how he was and understood that he rarely budged when he settled on something.
Chrollo's flippant reply made Kurapika grind his teeth, but he sat back in his chair, arms crossed defiantly over his chest. How dare that arrogant fucker do this to him. Sometimes Chrollo knew how to push his damn buttons. "Fine. Whatever. I just don't want to wait too much longer. We finish our meals, get my bloody haircut, then head back to the hotel and find out what your subordinate knows. Nothing more."
It still alienated him that Chrollo behaved so impudently as it seemed like the man was purposely doing it to test him. Kurapika had his limits; everyone did, but there were instances where Chrollo tested his boundaries. He wasn't sure if each one was intentional, but it didn't change the fact that it was vexing nonetheless.
"I don't plan to. You can take me at my word on that." Chrollo commented offhandedly, and Kurapika only shook his head as a result.
Instead of arguing further, he proceeded to consume the rest of the food sitting on his plate, all the while avoiding eye contact with Chrollo. Perhaps he gave in, but it didn't mean that he was happy or satisfied with the conclusion. If anything, they could hurry through this, so they could get to the parlor to deal with his hair. Afterward, they could finally get to the situation with the eyes.
For the remainder of their time at the café, Kurapika said nothing while he and Chrollo completed their lunch date in silence.
The echoing of footsteps resounded within the room as Kurapika's incessant pacing had made the other two entities with him concede on watching him. Ever since they returned to the hotel, Kurapika hadn't ceased asking for the status of what information it was that Shalnark had. Even after the door swung shut, he wouldn't pause for a split second in demanding to be told what was going on. The look in those chilling blue eyes had, at one point, turned a menacing scarlet, but the effect only lasted mere moments.
Once Chrollo stated that he would contact his subordinate and Kurapika's future comrade after they were settled, did he finally relent from continuing to badger the other man. Amar just sat there watching them the entire time, a mix of confusion and intrigue on his dark face.
"Are you now going to tell me what is going on?" Kurapika insisted, hands on his hips as he vehemently stared over at Chrollo. Since they were back at their hotel room, he saw no further need to suspend discussing it for any longer. It was bad enough that he had to hold back while they were practically traipsing all over the city.
Chrollo moved over to the bed and shrugged off his coat before casting it aside and onto the comforter. He then strode toward the kitchenette before retrieving himself a mug. "I did say that I would inform you of what is going on after we got back here, love. Before anything, I just need something to drink." Falling silent, and while ignoring Kurapika's scrutinizing gaze, he went over to where the coffee maker and decisively poured himself a cup.
Out from the corner of his eye, Chrollo watched his lover closely, the younger man's expression only darkening the longer he stood there.
"Well?" Kurapika spoke again, still in disbelief at how Chrollo was acting. It made him wonder if what he suspected were true and that his lover indeed had a penchant for toying with him just to tick him off. Pertaining that was the case, he was doing a pretty damned good job of it.
Despite Kurapika's insistence, he took a quick draw from his mug, indulging in the warmth of the coffee and its relaxing effects before lowering it to face his lover fully. Making him wait to see how he would react was fun sometimes, but overdoing it or letting it go too far Chrollo knew would only set him into a fit of rage. He loved teasing Kurapika, but instigating the younger man into lambasting him wasn't an aspect that he wanted nor enjoyed.
Besides, what they were doing was necessary, and finding the eyes was precisely that.
Chrollo set the mug aside and retrieved his phone. "Apparently, Shal thinks that he has a lead on where the next set of the Scarlet Eyes are, but from what he said, it seems urgent." He spoke calmly, the screen turned on, and to the message that he had received from his comrade only hours before. "Whatever it is, he wants to speak to me directly about it."
There was a moment of silence between them, and for that time frame, the two men simply stared at each other, one collectedly, the other incensed and fuming. Kurapika found it increasingly difficult to control his temper, especially when it appeared that Chrollo was only pussyfooting around with getting to the nitty-gritty of their situation, primarily when handling the next lead on the Scarlet Eyes.
If Kurapika hated one thing, it was procrastination.
His mouth twisted into a frown, and the hands that were on his hips moved away so his arms could fold over his chest. "And you decided to ignore the fact that it meant he wanted to speak to you right away and not later?" Kurapika chided, his posture showing that he was only becoming increasingly agitated. "Something like that definitely shouldn't get pushed aside for other things Chrollo!" He bit off the last few words, the tone of them almost like venom. Why his lover continued to do crap like that, Kurapika didn't think he would ever understand it.
The raised tone had provoked Amar into jerking his head up with his ears standing completely on end. Usually, Kurapika kept his voice low, even when angry, but this time it was evident that wasn't exactly the case. "Although it may have been deemed of great importance, perhaps Chrollo's friend knew it wasn't so urgent that it could wait until a more appropriate time," Amar interjected diplomatically while attempting to pacify his companions. "What I am saying is, even though it was necessary for them to speak, nothing regarding the situation would change in the time frame between when the message was sent and when it would be discussed."
Amar let his gaze shift between both men after he finished speaking, clearly wanting to defuse any prospect of fighting between them. Whatever was going on, Kurapika wasn't taking it too well. There wasn't much that didn't stress the young man out as of late.
Several minutes later, the tension in the room loosened, if even a fraction, and Chrollo smiled. "That pretty much sums it up. Shal didn't say we needed to speak immediately, just that it warranted my attention. Whatever the case, please don't work yourself up over it, babe."
Without saying anything more, Chrollo moved over to where Kurapika was, and for a moment, he could see the disapproval smoldering in his lover's eyes. Regardless of how the younger man felt, he gently took those pale lips with his own before kissing them softly, then pulling away. There was a brief touch of honey left upon his lips, and Chrollo wondered how Kurapika had always tasted so sweet, although he tended to be sour at times. Yet, it wasn't the only thing about him that had such a flavor.
Not that it mattered as regardless of how his lover behaved, he savored Kurapika in every way and for all he had to offer. How he felt about the younger man remained the same, and nothing could change that.
Kurapika breathed out when Chrollo moved away from him, yet the tingle from their recently departed kiss left a pleasant, tingling sensation on his lips and remained fresh in his mind. Just the contact alone seemed to make whatever he was angry about instantly evaporate from his mind, and Kurapika emulated the motions to speak, but no sound came forth.
If he still wanted to admonish Chrollo for what happened, the desire no longer existed. "Damnit," Kurapika murmured, but he slowly started to calm down. "Forgive me. I just can't always handle myself when it comes to the eyes. Finding them and as quickly as we can is something I've always stuck to."
One of Kurapika's hands came to rest against his temple, and he sat down in the closet chair by the small table near the kitchenette. Amar went to sit at his feet while Chrollo went back over to the coffee maker.
"Are you going to be alright?" He asked quietly, voice laced with concern. The young Nacknar's gaze lingered on his companion, worried for his well-being. The young man appeared to stress himself out often. It couldn't be good for his health.
"Yeah, I believe so," Kurapika responded, eyes closed. "I am just a bit tired is all." Moments later, Chrollo approached him, cup in hand. He took it graciously.
"I figured that you may need it," Chrollo added and brushed his fingers through Kurapika's locks. Each one slid through it effortlessly as the strands fell back to the younger man's cheeks in a golden waterfall. "The caffeine should help take the edge off at least." After that, he stepped aside while gripping his phone. "I am going to make that call to Shalnark now. I shouldn't be long."
Chrollo tottered off afterward, leaving Kurapika and Amar alone in the room.
Kurapika remained silent and watched him go, then took another sip of his coffee. It was warm and tasted pleasant. At least the stuff - despite his addiction to it - had a way of helping to clear his head.
"I still don't understand the circumstances behind these eyes, or your search for them, but even so, I know Chrollo is here to be supportive like I am. He is your mate and cares for you deeply although it may not seem that way."
The words that Amar spoke were a startling revelation. While Kurapika knew in the back of his mind that such was the truth, there were points where he had a hard time believing in it. Self-doubt wasn't his real issue; oh no, it was just the notion of it happening to him. Still, casting aside all his indignation, demurral, and overall skepticism, Kurapika actually smiled. Underneath it all, he knew that Chrollo honestly did care. The man had always made a point to make a constant show of it, not that he objected.
Looking back at all the months he had been traveling with his lover, Kurapika thoroughly remembered how it was for him before they officially became a couple. The countless times where he had displayed his affections towards Chrollo - both sexually and not - though confused by his emotions, desperate for anything that could give him something meaningful. Tangible.
Naturally, he was aware that his drive towards Chrollo at the time was nothing more than pure instinct, and something to give him purpose, a reason for continuing on as he had. Yet, Kurapika realized later that every string pulled was only by his own desire and need for self-fulfillment, gratification, and lust.
It wasn't who he was. And thus, the mask had to come off so that it wouldn't restrict his ability to see.
When Kurapika eventually understood the real meaning behind it and that no veil shrouded his vision any longer did he finally come to terms with his situation and accept it. Which made him glad that he did.
Admittedly, the sex was much sweeter when it was done so out of love. To think that he would have considered otherwise.
"Yeah," Kurapika spoke quietly, and he turned from where Chrollo had disappeared to face Amar. "What you said is right. However, the circumstances surrounding me and the eyes are a long, excruciating, and difficult story that is probably best to be told at another time. It's not that I don't want to tell you, but right now wouldn't be good for me."
Ceasing his speech when he did, Kurapika looked down at his mug and peered into its contents staidly before deciding to finish it off. Drawing back on the past always had its impositions, especially when it came to the eyes and his prior situation with Chrollo. While he hadn't managed to entirely forgive Chrollo - even if at all - for what happened, it didn't alter how he felt. The older man was a different person now, at least.
Sometimes, he just wished to forget the past, to bury it and disregard that it even existed. But that wasn't possible, and Kurapika knew that. What they had now was to look forward to a different future.
The slightly melancholy tone made Amar flick an ear, his head tilting to the side. It was evident that Kurapika was bothered by his past and that whatever had transpired, it clearly was mortifying. Although he was cognizant of his companion's distress regarding it, Amar chose not to press the issue. Kurapika would tell him sooner or later. That he was sure.
Instead, the small Nacknar simply nodded. "I understand and won't ask about it until you are ready. My only concern is the status of your health and pogey. Making sure that you are alright is first and foremost. Everything else will fall into place when the time is right." His hollowed, red eyes softened, almost perceptively, and followed Kurapika's movements as the young blond man drained the liquid from his cup. Whatever this 'coffee' was, both men seemed to like it to the point of bordering obsession. It made Amar wonder.
At least it had some kind of ameliorating effect on Kurapika.
"I will. Try not to worry. The events of my past are hard to deal with, and have caused me extreme amounts of stress, but you will be told of it when I am ready. That I can promise." Kurapika broke eye contact with Amar's searching gaze and went back to where the coffee maker was. At this rate, he would end up quaffing the entire pot.
"And I will wait until that time, rest assured."
Before either of them could do anything further, Chrollo returned to the room they were in, contemplation etched across his chiseled, rugged, but youthful features. Whatever must have taken place during the conversation with his comrade made him look speculative. Kurapika's attention diverted to him as he instantly noticed the subtle change in Chrollo's emotions.
"You may want to hear this," Chrollo emulated, his voice firm, unwavering. "Though I cannot guarantee you will like what I tell you."
The inclemency to his voice made Kurapika jerk slightly, his attention automatically piqued. He had heard a lot in the past that didn't quite sit right with him, so what Chrollo was about to tell him wouldn't be any different. "What happened?" Kurapika asked carefully, his lips pursing almost razor-thin.
Chrollo placed the phone back into his pant's pocket and pulled out one of the chairs from the small wooden table before taking a seat. He gestured with his hand for Kurapika to do the same. Once his lover sat down, Chrollo leaned back, hands now folded in front of him. "After talking with Shalnark, he has informed me of a dark website that apparently caters to individuals with particular fetishes, and perverse hobbies. About six months ago, someone posted footage to it containing a substantial amount of scarlet eyes. However, what he doesn't know is this person's identity. That is something which Shalnark has been trying to figure out since learning of the website and video." Following the reveal, Chrollo let his gaze shift over Kurapika slowly; there was no mistaking that his Kurta lover was obviously perturbed. The younger man looked as if he were frozen like a statue.
Pure shock from hearing about it had left Kurapika absolutely dumbfounded. There were only ten pairs left to find, and it seemed they had come across precisely that. After tracking down so many people and spending months upon months of searching, it appeared that his journey was finally coming to an end, or was it just beginning? They had faced countless others as they took back the eyes, all the while threatening, manipulating, stealing, and giving the people money, but also narrowly escaping danger time and again.
Now, he was about to face the last one with the remaining Scarlet Eyes. Kurapika was so close, he could practically taste it.
Only one thing stood in the way—the identity of the person. And it was that very missing piece which had him champing at the bit. Kurapika ground his teeth.
"There is someone out there who actually possesses such a large amount of these eyes?" Amar inquired after several moments of continued silence between them, his optimism becoming something more akin to ambivalence, and both men turned immediately to face him. So far, the most they had uncovered were six in one location, but then again, he hadn't been with both men from the very start, so he couldn't account for their encounters before joining them.
Nevertheless, he was inquisitive about this entirely new development.
Chrollo looked down a moment, his demeanor unchanged, then turned to his lover and companion once more. "Yes. They are, from my understanding, held by someone of importance, but we don't know who or what their status is. Gathering information directly from the video, which is all we have right now, doesn't give us any leads or much to work from." He furthered somberly. It was regrettable that he didn't really have anything else to offer Kurapika. Getting what info they had was difficult to acquire, and Shalnark was doing all he could to figure out the remaining.
The expression on Kurapika's face and his posture suggested the younger man was pretty disappointed.
"So, we aren't left with much to go on, which puts us at an ungodly disadvantage," Kurapika stated critically, a slight scowl on his features. Just when they were doing so well - and despite the minor setbacks along the way - another roadblock was there to halt them. It was aggravating, and the mere fact that he and Chrollo were hindered from proceeding without more information to go on didn't help.
Trying to make a move now against a faceless enemy or even attempting to figure out the person's identity would be worse than searching for a needle in a haystack. Kurapika couldn't help but grunt at the notion.
"Which is most unfortunate," Chrollo interjected before his lover could continue. "It gives us an idea of where to start, but aside from that, we can't do much else. Trust me when I say it's no less bothersome for me than it is for you, love."
Getting stuck with such a dilemma was an aspect that Chrollo found irksome, as he disliked it when any form of progress was stalled. It wasn't to say that he felt the same way during each situation they encountered since the beginning as there were times when there was nothing that could be done until the right moment, but this was different. They were so close to completing their objective as the final pairs of eyes were nearly within their grasp, and yet, the one piece of information needed for them to proceed was missing.
Chrollo closed his eyes but a second as he fell into silent rumination, his mind running over copious scenarios on how to track down and learn the identity of their next target, though nothing remotely came to mind.
It was utterly displeasing.
The truth of the matter caused Kurapika to huff before clicking his tongue disgustedly. He hated it, but sadly, Chrollo was right. "Are you even sure that Shalnark will be capable of figuring out who this person is? I mean, he wasn't able to before now, so there isn't any guarantee that he will later on." He groused, eyes becoming more frigid and hardened like glass.
Even though he wasn't about to deny that the blond tech geek had significantly helped them along the way, at the current, the situation was looking relatively bleak. Not that he wished to be negative, but it was hard to be optimistic, all considering.
Hearing Kurapika's accusations brought Chrollo from his thoughts and caused his attention to drop on the shorter blond man next to him. To Chrollo, it was still somewhat amusing that his lover had so little faith in his resources and skills. It was like Kurapika to sometimes forget who he was exactly. "Do you even need to ask that?" He replied smoothly, the palm of one hand coming to rest against Kurapika's as his lover leaned into it. "I didn't think that you still underestimated me or your new comrades in such a way. You know about my skills, angel, and how efficient Shalnark is. Uncovering the identity of this person shouldn't be too much of a problem."
A slight tug came to Chrollo's lips when he noticed that Kurapika's mouth had turned into an even deeper frown, but the epiphany he saw in his lover's eyes spoke of understanding. He figured that Kurapika just needed to be reminded whenever he had any doubts.
The sound of buzzing stopped Kurapika before he formulated a response and noticed that his phone was ringing.
Hastily, Kurapika retrieved the device, and his eyes widened when he saw whose name it was that appeared on the caller ID. For a second, his skin blanched to a slightly paler shade before his attention landed on Chrollo. "It's Leorio." He uttered slowly. Between the shock and disbelief, Kurapika wasn't sure exactly what to say, considering his lover's disdain for his friend. The slight twist to Chrollo's mouth was continued proof of that.
Though, it wasn't something that Kurapika entirely blamed him for. Leorio had this unrelenting attachment and infatuation that drove him nuts and only served to complicate their friendship. It seemed that no matter how many times they made it clear, both physically and vocally, that his feelings wouldn't ever be reciprocated, Leorio would only push harder on the subject, which tended to alienate Chrollo even more.
And it wasn't just Chrollo who demonstrated it, as Kurapika had stressed the very same thing as well. He cared for Leorio as a friend, much like he did for Gon and Killua. Nothing was going to change that. But his heart belonged to Chrollo, and Chrollo alone.
It was that kind of emotional attachment which made Kurapika always feel on edge nearly every time he spoke with his doctor friend. Because Leorio had neglected to accept the reality of his desire as nothing more than a passing fancy and move on added to the problem they faced. It was the reason that Chrollo distrusted him. Not that Kurapika blamed his lover. Visualizing Leorio as a romantic partner was an aspect that had never crossed his mind, as he had not once felt the same way for his friend. Before Chrollo, he didn't have an interest in anyone.
So, when the older man's expression had darkened just at the mention of his name, Kurapika could only hope the notion wouldn't perturb him too much.
"You probably should answer that," Chrollo said tersely after the third ring, and Kurapika nodded in response. He glared at the younger man's back when he strode off towards the other room. The notion that Kurapika was going to talk with that man alone lit a fire that burned white-hot within his gut. After Kurapika was out of sight, Chrollo grumbled under his breath.
The change of temperature in the room was something that didn't go unnoticed by Amar. "What exactly just happened, or did I miss something?" He asked slowly, clearly able to see that Chrollo was frustrated. It wasn't often that his dark-haired companion showed such emotion.
Dealing with the aspect of his indisposition regarding Kurapika's friend, Chrollo had nearly missed Amar's question. The Nacknar's voice rang softly through his mind, and he was finally drawn towards the young creature. "Nothing other than someone who seems to persist with getting in the way. It makes me wonder if he's doing it just to anger me."
Chrollo's more than cryptic response left Amar no less confused. The heated emotions stemming from whatever had instigated it told him that Chrollo was not about to elaborate further. Whoever had called Kurapika seemed to alienate Chrollo, which sparked Amar's curiosity even more, but he didn't press the issue. Eventually, Amar was sure that he would figure it out.
Both of them fell silent afterward as they patiently awaited Kurapika's return.
Free from the aspect of prying eyes and ears, the privacy of the connecting bedroom had offered Kurapika a moment of peace to speak alone with his friend. For a second, his thumb hovered over the answer button before tapping it to answer. "Hello Leorio."
The extensive pause that occurred immediately after that made him worried, as he hadn't really mentally prepared for whatever kind of onslaught Leorio had waiting for him. Kurapika already knew how his friend usually behaved and reacted to situations, primarily his relationship with Chrollo. The man hadn't even grown to accept it.
Several more seconds passed, which heightened the budding tension, and then what happened made Kurapika internally cringe. "Honestly, it's been quite some time since I've last spoken with you, and it does tend to make me wonder why." Another pause contributed to Kurapika's discontent, and he clutched the phone a little tighter. "Yet, I think that I already know. It's probably because of him." Leorio added. The bitterness that accented the last word told him just exactly where his friend was going with that statement. Of course, the first thing out of Leorio's mouth just had to do with Chrollo.
It made Kurapika grind his teeth. "Well, it's good to hear from you too." He responded flatly and not entirely in the mood to deal with Leorio's nettling. "However, the reason that you haven't heard from me isn't because of Chrollo. I've told you countless times that I am on a mission to recover my brethren's eyes." Kurapika added sternly.
There was an audible huff as Kurapika was relatively certain that his friend wasn't satisfied with his answer, and he could practically hear Leorio's disapproval. The one thing he had learned about Leorio was the man tended to drag something out until he was forced to give up or convinced to accept it. Judging from his friend's stance regarding the romantic relationship he shared with Chrollo, the latter would prove to be difficult, if not impossible. It appeared that Leorio wasn't entirely about to let go of that.
Kurapika grunted.
"Yeah, I'm sure that's not it." Leorio's voice echoed humorously through the line, and Kurapika clicked his tongue irritably. Damn it, why was he like this? "He's not ever the reason that you take so damn long with contacting us. Before, it was because you were too heavily fixated on chasing him down, now you're too wound up in his obsessive charm. C'mon Kurapika! It's not like I can't see it!"
His words rang over the phone like chalk down a blackboard, and Kurapika had to bite his lower lip to keep from unleashing a string of colorful curses. Leorio's attitude always got on his nerves. This instance was no different. "Listen Leorio, I didn't answer the phone for you to simply criticize me. I am quite sure that you called me for something other than that, so why don't you tell me?" Kurapika reached up with his free hand to rub at his temple in an attempt to soothe his frustration.
The longer the conversation drew on about his love life, the thinner his patience became. It was a subject that Kurapika didn't want to discuss. At times he wished that Leorio would just get over the fact they would never be a couple and drop it entirely. He didn't know for how much longer he could put up with his friend's ongoing fascination with him.
Leorio mumbled something incoherent, though it sounded more like it was to himself, and Kurapika could only breathe sharply as a result. The man was indeed stubborn as hell. "Yeah, alright," he responded sourly, and then continued, "I called because someone I never expected got into contact with me recently, and I got to say that, after what happened a few months ago, I didn't think any of us would hear from him again. However, Mizaistom from the Zodiacs called me regarding something important, and it's the reason why I decided to reach out to you."
Almost instantly, Kurapika froze, especially at the mention of Mizaistom. Memories of his encounter with the man dressed as a cow on the train to Falton, then in Winden and Mirie flooded quickly through his mind. As to why the Zodiac member asked to contact him, only put him on instant alert. Kurapika promptly assumed that all the outcomes of their missions since their last appearance in Mirie may have raised the Association's awareness of them once again. But even then, he did remember Mizaistom and the woman, Cheadle swearing that neither of them nor the Association would come after he or Chrollo for agreeing to assist them with the Nacknar threat.
Now, the man was attempting to communicate with him again. It made an abundance of questions race through his mind as to what the reason was, and then Kurapika settled on another possibility. Could they have learned about Amar's existence? The very thought was startling. He bit on his lower lip, worried if that had been it. After what the Nacknars had done, Kurapika was sure the Association wouldn't be as welcoming towards Amar as he and Chrollo were.
And even then, he hadn't been so quick to trust the young creature right away either. However, since their initial meeting, Amar had done so much to prove his worth.
It was enough to solidify his trust in Amar to know the Nacknar wasn't anything like his kind. But would the Association see it the same way?
"Mizaistom?" Kurapika blurted out, his lips slowly mouthing the words. "Did he specify why he wanted to speak to me?" Concern bubbled within the pit of his stomach, as the very idea the Zodiacs wanted anything to do with him again was somewhat disconcerting. If it wasn't due to his and Chrollo's activity with the Scarlet Eyes or because of Amar, then what was it?
So many contingencies, and yet, Kurapika couldn't discern which one it was.
Leorio coughed, his voice somewhat gravelly. "Not outright, but your name came up after he made an inquiry about you possibly assisting them again. He asked the same of me as well, though I agreed after thinking it over." He took a breath and held it a moment before releasing it and continuing. "Something big is happening. They want me to join the Zodiacs, and for doing so, agreed to pay my tuition, plus give me formal medical training. What exactly it is they want you for, Mizaistom said he'd ask you directly."
The ambiguity made Kurapika swallow thickly. Regardless of what it was, he didn't like it. Working with the Association and the Zodiacs the first time had been nerve-wracking and dealing with them again? He couldn't fathom what it would be like a second time around. Plus, the fact they got Leorio to join them was surprising. What could they possibly want him for as well?
Still, Kurapika had to find out the reason. "Alright. I will wait for his call then. In the meantime, I don't suppose Mizaistom specified why they needed you? It seems a bit strange if you ask me, especially since you were quick to agree." He added pragmatically. It wasn't like Leorio to be so accommodating.
For a moment, there was silence, then Leorio coughed before answering. "He did actually, but it has to do with whatever it is he wants to ask of you, so I can't go into details. Still, you may want to hear what the man has to say."
Kurapika sniffed. The secretive nature behind this new development only made him even more earnest in finding out what was going on. Since Leorio wasn't keen on revealing the nature behind Mizaistom and the Association's request, it only heightened that aspect. Nevertheless, his suspicions remained the same.
"I see. Then I will be eager to speak with him. It's not as if I have much of a choice anyway."
His friend made some kind of noise in response that sounded a lot like triumph. The look Kurapika envisioned on Leorio's face only made him shake his head as a result. At least the lanky man wasn't fussing about him and Chrollo anymore, which he was grateful for.
"Well then, I suppose that I will talk to you again soon?" Leorio inquired, and Kurapika could only close his eyes as a result, but he agreed that would inadvertently be the case. Not that he minded communicating with Leorio, it was just that when he went on any tirade, Kurapika wanted to avoid dealing with him. Which happened primarily when he was grousing about Chrollo.
In truth, he couldn't avoid Leorio entirely, nor did he really want to. "Yeah. I'll let you know more after I've heard from Mizaistom. Until then, just be patient, alright?"
There was another brief pause as if the man was debating the request, but he chimed in seconds later without hesitation. "Will do," Leorio confirmed and ended the call afterward. Kurapika sighed, obviously relieved, yet he had to admit that it was still good to hear from his friend.
He slid the phone into his pocket and moved back into the other room where Chrollo and Amar were waiting. There wasn't much else he could do at the moment but wait for Mizaistom to contact him. Once Kurapika made his presence known, two sets of eyes landed on him, clearly impatient. Chrollo appeared interrogative, while Amar was curious. He wasn't sure exactly how his lover was going to take the news.
"So, what happened?" Chrollo asked after several minutes of reticence between them. "You were in the other room for quite some time." He added pointedly.
It was hard to ignore the brief flash of scrutiny behind Chrollo's probing eyes, but Kurapika kept his demeanor unchanged. Knowing that his lover was probably discontented because Leorio had called him in the first place, all considering his friend's past behavior, was bad enough. Though how long they took overall only seemed to make it worse. "Aside from the fact that Leorio practically chewed me out for barely calling him, he basically wanted to let me know that someone we least expect had gotten in touch with him not long ago." Kurapika ceased talking for a second to evaluate how Chrollo would react, but all his lover did was raise an eyebrow for him to continue. "I am not sure what to make of it, but Mizaistom wants to talk to me apparently."
Watching the subtle change from inquisitive to pure disbelief etch over Chrollo's visage made Kurapika brace for whatever reaction he was about to receive. Since their last encounter with the Zodiacs and Mizaistom on the train, he wouldn't be too surprised if Chrollo was unsettled. How the man had tracked them down was perplexing enough, but dealing with someone from the Association who specialized in hunting criminals, particularly those with class A bounties, made the temporary alliance more than palpitant.
Luckily for them, both agents had firmly agreed to not actively pursue anyone from the Genei Ryodan, though it didn't entirely abate the inquietude that both he and Chrollo felt. Now that Mizaistom had resurfaced only to ask him for another favor, Kurapika couldn't help but wonder what the man's true agenda was. If there even was one.
And still, eliminating any suspicion of that being the case was practically impossible. What Mizaistom could possibly want, since the Nacknars weren't - currently - a threat, baffled him. The man had let on that he wasn't the only one aware of his activities regarding the Scarlet Eyes.
The Association was also.
Plus, they knew that he was personally involved with Chrollo Lucifer. If either of those were why Mizaistom was reaching out to him again, Kurapika was worried for their sake. The thought of anyone getting between him and the eyes or the man he loved caused his chest to tighten. One of his hands unconsciously balled into a fist.
Chrollo steepled his fingers together, both hands resting in front of him. Oh, really?" He began, the worlds falling off his tongue ever so slowly. "You're referring to the man who had dressed in a cow suit, right?"
Evidently, Chrollo remembered the man, though as he should since it hadn't been very long from when they last saw him, but there was no mistaking the caution in his lover's voice. "Yes," Kurapika confirmed, his eyes locked explicitly with Chrollo's. "I don't know what he wants from me, but I was told that it's important. Leorio didn't say anything more." He furthered, careful in what he said.
"I see," Chrollo replied, his expression hardening. "So, the Zodiacs have decided to get involved with us again?" The idea twisted his lips as Chrollo grew even more circumspect over their unfolding situation. He didn't like where it was going. "Whatever the reason, it can't be good. I still don't fully trust them regardless of the agreement we made. The Hunter's Association is all about suggestio falsi, and only upholding whatever suits their agenda. This may be no different."
Thinking back on it, the only reason they even remotely decided to help that man wearing his ridiculous costume was because of the mutual threat the Nacknars posed. The creatures were a real danger, and not only to the world as a whole but his hometown as well. If the Nacknars had invaded Meteor City, there would have been nothing left.
Had it not been for that, he would have promptly sent Mizaistom away or just blatantly killed the man outright. Either way, Chrollo didn't like it. His intuition had told him that he and Kurapika would encounter them a second time, but the prospect of working with the Zodiacs or the Hunter's Association again perturbed him. There had to be more to it than just simply 'offering their aid' once more.
Anything to do with hunters always had some kind of strings attached.
"Listen Chrollo, I don't like this anymore than you. Not to mention, the fact that Mizaistom had also asked my friends for some kind of favor really bothers me. I would prefer for none of them to be involved in anything to do with my mission, or whatever the hell it is the Association has planned. The last thing I want is for them to be placed into any kind of danger, and I still regret involving them in the situation regarding those beasts." Kurapika turned away, his eyes closed as he broke contact with Chrollo, not willing to be swayed in any way on his decision.
Because he did care for his friends' safety, specifically Gon and Killua, though he felt relatively the same way about Leorio's well-being, letting them get mixed up in the Association's affairs was something he didn't want to allow.
If the Zodiacs thought they were going to manipulate himself or his friends, they had another thing coming. Even Chrollo wouldn't stand by and let them. Kurapika swallowed sharply, resolute in what he needed to do. Plus, he had an objective to focus on, which held more significance than anything the Zodiacs had planned. They needed to track down whoever it was that had the remaining Scarlet Eyes. He didn't have time to play games with Mizaistom.
The stress in Kurapika's voice wasn't hard to miss, and Chrollo thoroughly understood his lover's reasoning. Dealing with so many issues and regularly had left them both rather skeptical, yet Kurapika more so, which only led to the younger man's lack of tolerance. Not that he blamed Kurapika; Chrollo was in a similar mindset. Getting his friends involved was definitely casus belli for him and one that Chrollo profoundly understood.
However, from what he saw of the two boys, they were extremely headstrong and quite capable. If anyone was efficient in handling themselves, it was those two kids.
Leorio, on the other hand, while he seemed to be decently competent, the man was loud, obnoxious, and ridiculously intrusive, especially when it came to Kurapika. It was something that Chrollo didn't want to think about, much less acknowledge. He gave the two young boys props for how adept they were, mainly the one with the cat-eyes and silver hair. Perhaps Kurapika didn't give them enough credit, but even then, he could see they had a penchant for jumping foolhardily into danger.
Involving them in whatever scheme the Zodiacs and the Association had was probably not a good idea.
"I don't blame you for how you feel, angel. While I still believe that your friends are rather adept and not entirely incapable of handling themselves, I still understand why you'd be concerned. Though I will say, if they choose to get involved of their own accord, can you really stop them?"
The question incited Kurapika to stop abruptly, shock crossing his features. Immediately, he examined his abilities, not entirely confident of the influence that he had regarding his friends. After how many times he attempted to divert the three of them from stepping into danger, almost instantly, either one or all of them would do the exact opposite. Kurapika recalled back in Yorknew when he had warned Gon and Killua not to pursue the Genei Ryodan, and they had done so anyway. And now, if they knew what he was up against, would anything he said actually even stop them?
Then again, were they even aware? Kurapika wondered, but he wouldn't have put it past Leorio to update them on what was going on with himself. So, the chances that Gon and Killua knew were pretty high. Damn it.
Still, it all boiled down to what it was that Mizaistom wanted.
"Honestly, you're right. As much as I hate to admit it, but I don't know if I truly can—"
"Then why would you try to? With some luck, you just might be able to sway them, and if not, let them contribute in their own way, love. They have to continue growing, and probably want to get stronger so that neither of them feel useless or inept. You had proven that time and again with how much you wanted to handle life yourself, so you can't entirely blame your friends if it's the same case for them." Chrollo interjected and laid a hand on his lover's shoulder. During their conversation, he had retrieved more coffee for both of them to drink, and Chrollo raised the mug in his hand to take a sip. Kurapika surely needed a pick-me-up.
For several long moments, he just stared into the mug's steaming contents. "I suppose you're right. Though, I can't say that I am comfortable with it all considering, but hopefully, Gon and Killua refrain from getting caught up into any of this mess. When it comes down to it, our only goal is to retrieve the last remaining pairs of the Scarlet Eyes, and if what Mizaistom wants only interferes with that, I most certainly will not opt into helping him."
Kurapika then raised his own mug, finally ready to take a pull from it, when his phone suddenly started buzzing. He took a quick swig and then went to retrieve the device from his pant's pocket. It only took him mere seconds to realize exactly who was calling.
Mizaistom. Speak of the devil.
"It's him," Kurapika looked up just long enough for Chrollo to nod his consent, to which he then tapped the green answer key. The line clicked to life, and there were several seconds of silence before he decided to take the initiative and strike up a conversation. "Hello, this Kurapika." He stated clearly, but with an impersonal tone.
Another few seconds passed where nothing was said, and Kurapika heard shuffling before a voice mumbled something incoherent. Next, it sounded as if the phone shifted to where an actual person was holding it. "Ah yes, hello Kurapika. It's Mizaistom. Forgive me for the delay, but I am glad that I was able to reach you. Before anything, have you heard the news about Kakin going to the Dark Continent?" The man finally said through the line. Kurapika rolled his eyes at the question.
"Kakin? The Dark Continent?" Kurapika responded curtly. His finger tapped impatiently against the side of the phone. "No, I haven't and I don't care. Though, let's cut the small talk. I understand that you want to speak with me?" He added, wanting Mizaistom to just spell it out.
A sound of humming echoed through the line, and Kurapika could have sworn he could practically envision the damned man in his fucking cow suit smiling at him. The audacity! Kurapika ground his teeth. "I see, always ready to get right down to business. Alright, well, the primary reason I wanted to talk with you is because I have a proposition, and one that may pique your interest."
Kurapika frowned, obviously ready for whatever tactics that Mizaistom was about to deploy. The idea of the man proposing something caused his hackles to rise. "I'm listening." He stated firmly.
The response made Mizaistom hum again, but his demeanor turned formalistic afterward. "I'll get straight to the point then. We at the Hunter's Association have known about your search for the Scarlet Eyes, however, I may have some information that you might find useful. There is a dark website that we found where people with strange, eccentric tastes in bizarre and gruesome hobbies like to secretly congregate. Do you know that six months ago, a video with footage showing a large number of those eyes was uploaded there?" Mizaistom furthered, then paused immediately afterward.
"Of course I do. What of it?" Kurapika snapped back without hesitation, his patience slowly waning over the current subject at hand. Just the sheer mention of his people's eyes was enough to spark his ire, but for the Association and Mizaistom to use it as a means of propositioning him only increased the level of that ire. He definitely wasn't in any mood for bullshit.
"Well," Mizaistom resumed slowly, "we have identified the owner of those Scarlet Eyes."
Shock quickly overtook Kurapika's features, and he stared nearly wide-eyed at the floor in front of him. It took a few seconds for what Mizaistom said to fully register, but when it did, he reflexively tightened his grip on the phone to the point that if he had done so any harder, it might have broken from the pressure. "Are you sure of who they are exactly?" Kurapika questioned instantly after his brain had managed to catch up.
"Yes. It's been confirmed. There is no doubt regarding the accuracy of the information. I can say without a shadow of doubt who this person is." Mizaistom paused to breathe in, and Kurapika could sense the tension in the man's voice. His frown only deepened as a result. "We accidently came across the information while making a background check on a certain VIP for the Dark Continent trip. It was by mere coincidence and would have been impossible to figure out from the video alone. However, that is all I will say until you hear my proposition." Mizaistom finally added.
It took all Kurapika had not to unleash on the man, as he really didn't want to get jockeyed around by anyone in the Association, especially Mizaistom. But the man had the only lead on the identity of who had the last remaining Scarlet Eyes. He grunted. "So you're saying this person is going to be one of the passengers making the trip to the Dark Continent?" Kurapika demanded outright, the temptation to do whatever it took to wring all the information out of Mizaistom slowly taking over.
Again, the man paused, and this time for several moments longer than before. Such a delay in receiving confirmation added to his increasing impetuosity. His only priority was to recover the last of the missing Scarlet Eyes and by any means necessary. If Mizaistom thought that he would just get led around by the nose, the man had another thing coming!
Before Kurapika could lose his patience any further, Mizaistom's voice echoed over the line. "Yes. If you are willing to help out again, then accompany us to the Dark Continent. Unfortunately, the trip will take about two months, so you will be confined to a ship for that long."
"What about Chrollo?" Kurapika immediately asked. He was entirely unwilling to leave his lover behind. Plus, Amar was another factor. They couldn't simply leave their Nacknar friend behind. And there was still the matter of how the Association would react to him as well.
Kurapika could sense the slight delay in Mizaistom's answer, which began to make him believe the Association continued to retain a bias against the Genei Ryodan's leader, and just as he was about to force the person's name out of the man, something made him stop instantly. "Ah, Chrollo Lucifer? He can join you since I know that you're both involved with each other," Mizaistom corroborated, and Kurapika felt his rage slightly abate. "Just make sure that he doesn't cause any trouble." He stressed further.
"Alright, I agree then. Will you now tell me who it is?"
"Kakin's forth prince, Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou."
Everything hit Kurapika head-on, the weight barreling down on him like loose bricks. His mouth went suddenly dry, and he found it difficult to even swallow, the saliva going down his throat like sand. It was just so much to process. After everything they had been through and with how close they were—the reality of their situation was a hard pill to swallow.
He and Chrollo had encountered so many along the way. An eccentric collector, the priestess of a cult, a prominent mafia family, the inside of a museum, a merchant, bank owner, scientist, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, an ex-convict, artist, mystic, gang leader, doctor, and now a king's son. Kurapika knew he had lost so much, and with it, pieces of himself, but he was so close to completing his goal.
All that was left was to deal with the final monster who had the remaining Scarlet Eyes.
"Thank you," Kurapika whispered, his resolution clear.
"No problem. We appreciate your cooperation. That said, I will be in contact with you later to go over the details regarding the trip. Until then, we will send you everything regarding Kakin and the voyage to the Dark Continent. The ship leaves in two weeks time," Mizaistom said in irrevocability. Following his words, the line went silent, and Kurapika swiped the end call button on his phone. He then turned to face the two presences behind him who had been quietly watching him the entire time.
"That was... rather interesting," Amar commented and tilted his head. What had transpired not only intrigued him, but he heard mention of the place where he and his platoon had landed on, then escaped from during Kurapika's conversation. Why it was brought up was beyond him, but he was no less curious.
"I agree there. So, what is going on, babe?" Chrollo chimed in once the Nacknar's voice dissipated from his mind, his eyes firmly planted on the younger man across from him.
Kurapika slipped the phone into his pocket once more and expelled a breath. "It's complicated, but I know the identity of the person in possession of the remaining Scarlet Eyes. Only, there is a catch. The Association requires our assistance again."
A frown worked its way across Chrollo's lips at the words his lover spoke, and he shoved his hands down into the pockets. "So, they want us to help bail them out again. What is it exactly, though? He inferred, unsure of how the notion made him feel. Chrollo still suspected the Association was up to something, but they had the one lead on the eyes that he and Kurapika didn't. In the end, he hoped they weren't trying to play either of them for fools.
"Basically, it has to do with the Kakin empire and the Dark Continent. I remember the latter had come up a few times before, especially by Amar," Kurapika stated, then turned his attention towards the young Nacknar, "as I believe it is where you mentioned that your kind had ended up after traveling to this world?"
So, it did come up, and his ears weren't deceiving him after all. There was a brief moment where Amar closed his eyes before speaking. "Yes," he confirmed, "it was a large, primitive land where countless other creatures roamed. We quickly integrated, and had managed to keep the other inhabitants at bay either by threatening, subjugating, or just killing them outright. Once that happened, the rest had managed to cultivate the land and formed a colony. The rest you know."
Both men exchanged looks at each other, then Kurapika continued. "Right. So basically, a trip to the Dark Continent has been planned by the Kakin empire, and our target will be joining it. That is the only reason I agreed, but it may also be our only chance to actually acquire the eyes." Kurapika ran one of his slender hands through his golden locks, and a sigh escaped his lips. "Honestly, I don't want to get involved, but we have to complete the mission." He supplied.
Chrollo looked contemplative, his thumb and index fingers resting lightly on his chin. "The Dark Continent eh? Yeah, from what little I do remember, it's a hostile place that no one has ever succeeded in exploring, so it surprises me that Kakin has decided to take such a high risk gamble. However, the more I think about it, and aside from what Amar has told us, it may be advantageous of us to do this. Not only can we finally retrieve the last ten pairs of Scarlet Eyes, but perhaps it could be a way to possibly deal with the remaining Nacknars who are still there also." He raised the cup in his hand and took another draw to avoid Kurapika's prying gaze.
Maybe he wasn't as inclined to encounter the rest of those creatures on the Dark Continent, but Kakin was rich and more than likely had tons of rare and valuable treasures. While they retrieved the eyes, he could also be robbing those pecunious fuckers blind. The very idea made him smirk.
The statement caused a slight crease to form upon Kurapika's forehead as his eyebrows almost knitted together. How Chrollo could even entertain the idea of fighting those beasts again utterly baffled him. Their last encounter was enough to last him a lifetime, and so long as the remaining Nacknars stayed on the Dark Continent, he wasn't going to concern himself with it. Kurapika snorted audibly. "Perhaps. Our main priority is the Scarlet Eyes. Those beasts aren't something I care to deal with unless they prove to become a problem again. Otherwise, we are there solely for that, and that alone. Everything else that happens inconsequential."
Getting stuck on a boat with some snobby, pompous, and conceited royalty was terrible enough without tossing some crazed, maniacal creatures into the mix. Kurapika resumed drinking the rest of his coffee until the cup was empty.
He then set it aside.
"I understand. The eyes are definitely the most important asset here. Nothing else will happen before we find them. I can promise you that," Chrollo said softly and lowered his hand. He then followed Kurapika's example and drained his own mug before setting it next to his lover's. "How much time do we have until this voyage is supposed to take place?"
Kurapika pressed his lips together before answering, "Two weeks." He responded, posture still rigid. "Mizaistom mentioned that he would be in contact with me again regarding the details, and would send us what information they have on Kakin and the excursion to the Dark Continent. I suppose in the meantime we just... prepare."
A single hum was given in response to what he said, and Kurapika moved past his lover to sit down. He could feel Chrollo's eyes follow him the entire way.
"That is the most logical result," Chrollo affirmed before going to stand behind Kurapika and began kneading the younger man's shoulders. "However, I have a suggestion, love as it may help us greatly while increasing our chances significantly. My only concern is taking Amar with us." Chrollo shifted his stare to graze over their Nacknar companion, who tilted his head at him inquisitively.
"It shouldn't be a problem," Amar spoke, his ears turning back in response. "Just put me into that... cloth thing again as you did when we went to board the airship. I can stay out of sight if need be during the journey if it will help keep the problems to a minimum."
"If you're sure then, I see no issue with you going," Chrollo acknowledged and pressed his fingers more firmly into Kurapika's tense shoulders as he massaged them through his lover's clothes. The soft moan he made, as a result, was cute, which made Chrollo's grin expand even more.
Feeling those firm hands over the stiff areas of his body made Kurapika relax slightly, and his eyes slipped closed. "What is your suggestion?" He asked after several minutes.
The question made Chrollo pause abruptly, but he resumed quickly after that. "We should involve the rest of the Genei Ryodan angel. Judging from what you've said, and with how extensive this mission very well may end up being, I think doing so would be in our best interest. Granted, I know it won't be too keen on the idea, but do try to consider it."
Several long moments passed, and the quiescence in the room seemed to grow more and more awkward. Kurapika breathed out slowly as Chrollo had managed to hit a particularly tender spot, and he rolled his shoulders as a result. The touch was soothing, and damn it felt good, though he couldn't help but click his tongue at the implication his lover made. Involving the Spiders in their last mission for the eyes sounded preposterous and a definite invitation for trouble. For several months he and Chrollo had traveled alone, just the two of them, and he rather liked that aspect as he enjoyed the older man's company. To throw the rest of the Genei Ryodan into the mix—
Yet, he had no idea what they were up against or just how powerful Kakin was. From what little Kurapika knew, thirteen princes and princesses were all in line to succeed the throne. Their personalities, way of life, and behavior were foreign to him, but with how staunch and influential the king was, there was no way of telling what they could be walking into. Kurapika wasn't entirely keen on the idea, but at this point, it was probably best to increase their chances as much as possible, though he didn't want to admit it.
Also, it would be another opportunity to work with the Spiders again to further prove his loyalty to them.
"Alright. I'll agree to it. On the condition they don't cause too much trouble and try to stay on the downlow as much as they can. I don't need them raising any Cain or causing a problem for us. It's imperative that we don't miss this opportunity. Not to mention, I vow to do whatever it takes to complete this mission. I am sure you understand that."
Chrollo raised an eyebrow and moved his fingers up towards Kurapika's neck. The muscles there were extremely knotted. It was of no wonder why his lover was always so tired and grouchy. "Trust me, I do. You have no worries there. And I will keep them in line. They won't do anything to jeopardize this operation." As his hands slid up towards the base of Kurapika's skull, Chrollo leaned down to kiss the top of his lover's golden mop. "That said, we should start preparing. There is going to be a lot that needs done, also we may want to begin heading towards Kakin. It will take some time to reach the country. After we arrive, we can stay at a hotel in the meantime."
Unconsciously, Kurapika leaned into those attentive, probing fingers as Chrollo let them explore upward, the pressure continuing to soothe him. "I got no arguments there. With that in mind, we should probably leave, and soon."
"I concur, there is no point in hanging around here,"
"Likewise," Amar added as he observed both men. "We're finished here, so it makes sense for us to leave. We are just wasting time by staying here."
All three of them nodded in assent, then fell into silence as Chrollo continued to focus his attention on Kurapika's tense and stiff shoulders. His lover needed to relax. In truth, they all did in preparation for the upcoming event ahead. Who knew what they would be facing once they entered a ship full of posh, eccentric, and high and mighty nobles. Not to mention the Association as well. Once they knew more of the details, it would be easier to thoroughly plan, but until then, what Mizaistom already gave them was all they had to go on.
Chrollo cast the thought aside and kept his eyes on Kurapika. For now, all they could do was wait.
After Thoughts: I must say that there were so many directions I wanted to go with this chapter, and the events that will follow as I had several directions I could have taken it in, but after so much deliberation, I settled on using the Dark Continent, and the boat route despite the fact I could have approached the last ten pairs of eyes in other ways. Because of how I plan to end the arc, and due to certain aspects I want to incorporate into the story, this seemed to be the most logical (and necessary) direction to go in.
However, I don't plan to take the events of the trip to the DC exactly as it's seen in the manga as I have ideas for this, plus I want to complete this arc within a certain time frame because, as I've mentioned, RoF is down to it's last twenty-two some odd chapters, and I definitely would like to complete the story before it has the chance to get too long and well beyond where I had initially wanted to close it at. Not to mention, RoF will be three years old next week (huzzah), and will hopefully see completing by this time next year.
