AN: Alright new chapter, new start.
Yeah I know most inconsistent author over here.
With Railgun T done, I'm just waiting for more source materials to get. When the 4th season is announced it's probably gonna be called Railgun F. Then again how would the 5th season be?
Oh well, enjoy.
Chapter 59: Paradise
Waking up from my nap, I saw our destination.
It was a tropical island with a few huts on it. Those types of buildings were never seen at the city. I noticed a small dock at one of the ends. There was no airport.
"Wait how are we going to land?!" I wondered outloud,
I heard a chuckle from behind.
"This is one of Academy City's remote islands." Maya approached me with a smile, "Plus this is private property so the whole place is ours."
Looking at the island again, it gave me a laid back aura. It made me want to relax and enjoy the sun.
"So that's the beach, huh?" I smiled,
"Oh right, you never been out of the city." Maya realized,
I felt content.
Yet one question was never answered.
"So where are we landing?" I asked again,
"You'll see Otomi." she giggled, "You'll see."
Why did she repeat that?
Perhaps I can see what she meant. Looking around the island, everything looked so natural. There was barely anything metallic around. I didn't see it.
Then I heard it.
Something was opening.
"Woah." was my reaction to the sight,
Part of the ocean was opening! It's like a door opened underneath it! The water was moving to the side and I could see a runway.
"I mean the facility is just under the island." Maya shrugged, "We can't have it out at the open, you know?"
That made sense. If some random passerby or vacationers stumbled into this facility, there would be a lot of problems. That person would have to be bribed or silenced to keep the location a secret.
A part of my brain realized something.
"So can we go to the beach?!" I asked excitedly,
Maya blinked a few times and laughed.
"Honestly, I sometime forget you're a kid compared to us." she ruffled my hair, "We're gonna go, don't you worry."
I was filled with excitement. Too bad some of my friends weren't here to enjoy the spectacular sight. Then again, I imagined Kuroko constantly going after Mikoto. Misaki teasing my sister, while a flustered Touma looking away. Ruiko and Uiharu enjoying some tropical drinks.
"Otomi will not be going unless I say so."
My dream vanished.
"Remember you are here to recover." Shinobu sternly pointed out, "I don't want any stress or strains from you. It won't help."
"You do realize going to the beach will unstress people." I pointed out,
She was acting like a mother.
Oh wait she's technically a mom to me.
"You know what I mean." sighed Shinobu,
Maya had this grin and approached the girl.
"So Shinobu ever had a boyfriend?" she teased,
"I don't have time."
Maya frowned at her response. I had a feeling Maya wanted to see a more flustered reaction. Instead, Shinobu was straight to the point with the same soft expression.
"Buzzkill." Maya stuck her tongue out,
For some peculiar reason, I could see these two as a comedic duo.
I laughed at their antics. Both of them were staring at me with wonder.
The scenery outside became metallic. I had to look up to see the sky. However it looked like the sky was closing in front of us. We were inside the underwater runway.
Then the plane halted.
"Alright, get your luggage!" Maya told us,
Shinobu ordered Aritomi to carry Febrie and Janie's luggages, while Ichiroku volunteered to carry mine.
"Even the younger sibling would like to take care of their older sibling." he explained,
Nobody wanted me to carry my own bags.
While Proto pushed my wheelchair, Mio and Kayo went ahead of us to the exit.
"Maya-sama we require the passcode!" Mio proclaimed,
There was a terminal and scanner next to the door. There was a red icon showing a lock.
"We don't need one." Shinobu muttered,
She gestured to Proto. My sister pointed at herself. Then Shinobu nodded firmly and gestured to the scanner.
Proto placed her hand on the scanner. The icon became green and we heard the door unlock.
"Metaphorically, we're the passcode." Proto nodded,
The facility was state of the art. Whatever was the latest trend when it came to design and practicality it was there. Academy City did not waste any expense to make this facility as comfortable and usable as possible. It had a dining room, living room, entertainment room, library, and a training room.
There were enough bedrooms for everybody so we all had assigned roommates. I was with Proto the two of us were closest to each other. Maya, Mio and Kayo shared a room.
"You two decide who's gonna take the bathtub, if there's not enough beds." Maya declared, "If not the loser can grab a spare mattress."
Shinobu was with Febrie and Janie.
"Can we have a sleepover with Otomi?!" an excited Febrie wondered outloud,
Ichiroku, Aritomi and Sherry would have their own respective rooms. However Ichiroku was assigned to keep an eye on the two. He never fought the two people when I thought about it.
"Any complaints about these arrangements?" asked Shinobu,
There was only silence. After moving our bags to our respective rooms, I was sent to the training room.
Proto was holding my wheelchair. There was an observation deck.
"Otomi we need to test that black electricity you acquired from the most recent incident." I heard Shinobu explained through the various speakers around the room, "It is a significant unknown factor. Despite the footage we had when you used it. There are still too much we don't know about it.
The owner of the city asked me if I wanted to become an angel. It was an eerie question when I thought about it. Did this dark lightning had to do something about it or was it the result of becoming an angel?
In another train of thought, Gensei sought out the power of a level 6. Mikoto transformed into that unstoppable creature and I couldn't keep up even on connect mode.
In other words, did transforming into an angel had some sort of relation with a level 6?
"Still from what we've witnessed, Otomi's power was significantly higher." Maya pointed out, "However it seemed to push her body further beyond it's limits. As the doctor said her body functions are starting to deteriorate at an accelerated rate."
I heard Shinobu sighed over the speakers.
"With Sherry here we can analyze this lightning's property and it will speed up your new body's stabilization." our scientist explained, "Otomi you will send a small spark at the designated target."
A testing dummy came out and there was some doodles around it.
"I-Is that supposed to be me?!" a baffled Aritomi wondered,
I heard Proto snickering behind me.
"Just because it has glasses doesn't mean it's you." sighed Shinobu, "Otomi if you would?"
With a quick shock of dark lightning, the dummy was completely obliterated. There was no sign of it at all.
"Did you really have to disintegrate it?" chuckled an amused Maya,
Looking at my hand, there was a spark forming around it.
"I sent a quick shock not a railgun." I pointed out,
"Those dummies should be highly resistant against electricity." I heard Kayo, "Yet that dark lightning just ignored all of that."
"Indeed like a world of it's own." Mio added on,
"Onee-sama, is this the power of magic?" Proto asked me quietly, "To ignore the rules of physics?"
"Possibly." was my answer,
"These readings are strange." Shinobu muttered to herself but we all heard it,
I was curious.
"What's the matter?" I asked,
"The voltmeter is off the scale." she began, "Measuring your volts with the average electromaster, it is significantly higher than average."
To be fair I did blow up the dummy, which was supposed to be highly resistant to electricity.
"It might be higher than Misaka's."
!
What the hell?
"That's insane!" Proto gasped, "It's higher than our onee-sama?! B-But she's the strongest electromaster! You're saying onee-sama is stronger than onee-sama?! Misaka screams in total disbelief!"
I-I shouldn't have this much power.
This was frightening.
"Yet the Power Curriculum rating is stating you are a level 0 Otomi." Shinobu went on,
What the-
"Bullshit that's a level 0!" Maya yelled, "We saw how destructive Mikoto became when she transformed. We saw when Otomi got that power, she was able to keep up with her!"
Maya had plenty of good points. Despite the terrifying power, Mikoto wasn't able to reach level 6.
Level 0, but it was a powerful ability.
Was it similar to Touma's hand?
"Officially this Dark Lightning is level 0." Shinobu sighed again, "However it's destructive power is on par with a level 5. Yet Otomi cannot sustain this power too long due to the high drawback of her failing body. If that reading was spark, I can only imagine how destructive it can potentially be."
I was a walking weapon of mass destruction. I shivered at the thought.
"Yet there are rare cases where level 0 simply means the ability cannot be directly measured." Aritomi pointed out, "Perhaps this is a similar case."
So it was similar to Touma's circumstance.
I smiled at Janie and Febrie who were giving me a thumbs up. I waved at them-
!
"Otomi!"
"Onee-sama!"
"Get the infirmary ready!"
W-What just happened?
I was sitting on my wheelchair and now I was on the floor coughing out blood. I could hear panic around me and I felt myself being picked up.
"Nee-san!" a worried Ichiroku held me in his arms,
I could barely see him. He's like a blur. Everything looked so out of focus.
My eyes were failing.
I felt somewhere soft and bright. There was something in front of me. I felt someone's hand opening my mouth and the unknown circular object was pushed towards it. I felt cold water going down my throat.
I could barely recognize a cup of water!
"Otomi how many fingers do you see?" someone asked me,
I saw a blurred hand.
"All?" was my answer,
Closing my eyes, I felt a burning sensation within them. Opening them again, I could clearly see Shinobu and Proto.
"You're bleeding from your eyes." gasped Proto,
I never noticed the fluid falling down my now bloodied face.
"I-I can see now." I reassured them, "Thank you."
Shinobu approached me with a frown. I felt a lecture coming.
"I take responsibility for this incident." she told me, "I read the reports and saw the footage when you use that power. I thought a small usage of it will not hurt you in any way, but it did. The drawbacks of this ability is pushing your body to it's absolute limits. I declare it forbidden to use that ability in any circumstances. You already have Proto as an escort but when she takes a break, one of us will be there to keep an eye on you."
"Understood." I simply nodded,
Then I coughed. I kept on coughing until I felt blood coming out of my mouth. My body felt tired all of the sudden.
"Some vacation." I chuckled,
"This is no laughing matter onee-sama!" Proto reprimanded me with angrily, "Why laugh when near death's door?! Everyone is out there worried for you and you're laughing about this! Making jokes at a time like this?! Misaka rages out with concern and fear!"
"Proto..." was my only response,
"Please don't hide your worries with that attitude." my sister went on, "Knowing my beloved onee-sama, who was suicidal and self-loathing, laughing at her own condition is making me angry! I don't want you to die! You promised your friends you'll see them when you get back! Was that a lie?! Misaka tries to calm down, but she can't!"
I never saw Proto like this before. Metaphorically she held her heart on her sleeve, as in she's not afraid to show emotion.
"Proto you know Otomi is going to make a recovery." Shinobu reassured her, "We're all scared for her, but yelling like that isn't going to make her feel better about this."
"It's alright Shinobu." I intervened, "She can vent out her frustrations and worry. I'm a good listener."
Proto took a deep breath and turned her head away. She was frowning.
"You just know how to push my buttons." she pouted,
I simply smiled as a reply.
"Stay here for a bit, until you feel better." Shinobu stood up with a worried look, "I have to check on the data we received with Aritomi and Sherry."
Then she left the infirmary.
"Well what do you wanna do?" Proto asked me, "I mean we can't really do too much, since we're stuck in here."
The door opened.
"Otomi!"
Janie and Febrie ran up to us with beaming eyes.
"You're ok." Janie nodded,
They both climbed up on my bed. The girls were hugging me.
"Otomi?" Febrie called me,
"Yes?"
"Can I marry Ichiroku?" she asked innocently,
Proto held a laugh, while I took a few deep breaths. I stared at the girl wondering if she was serious.
"Maya says I have to ask you." she went on, "I need your permission."
Then my sister started to laugh outloud. She was holding her side. The girl fell to the ground.
"Tickle attack!" Febrie jump off the bed and tickled Proto,
"Ichiroku is a cool big brother." Janie told me, "He is really nice to us."
I patted Janie's head and watched the other two play around.
"Febrie, Maya played a prank on you." Proto poked the girl's forehead, "Ichiroku already has a girlfriend sorry."
I'm pretty sure Ichiroku and Kongou weren't officially together. He saved her during the Daihasei, but that was it. They haven't even gone out on a date yet!
"Not if I have anything to say about it." I muttered darkly,
Sisterly instincts were kicking in.
"What?!" a surprised Febrie gasped, "Who is she?! Is she pretty?!"
She seemed happier than before.
Proto took out her phone and showed Kongou.
"Oh I know her!" Febrie giggled, "She's very nice and funny! She gave me this pretty dress! I think they will look nice together!"
Both girls were giggling and the mood in the room got better.
...
"We got some good old fashion barbeque!"
"It smells good!"
Later on Shinobu, ironically, suggested to use the beach. We all gave her a bewildered look when it happened.
"Due to earlier events, we can use the relaxation." was her reason,
Right now, Maya was using a grill while Mio was smelling the contents. Shinobu was relaxing on a chair while she kept an eye out on the girls. Proto was with me on the boardwalk watching all of these events.
"It's too bad our brother can't be here to enjoy the heat." sighed Proto, "Then again, maybe it's better if the guys just stayed behind."
I was amused by her train of thought.
Sherry and Aritomi stayed in the facility to work on the project. With the two of them being the most distant, Ichiroku was assigned to keep an eye on them. Kayo, surprisingly, volunteered to assist my brother.
Everyone was wearing some sort of swimsuit, even me.
I did stick out with my permanently changed hair.
"Sheesh I look like Mikoto if she ever became an albino." I sighed,
"More like if Accelerator and our onee-sama fused." chuckled Proto,
She had a point.
A part of me wondered how long did we have to stay here. Will it be only a few days? Impossible, the body is almost complete but there were still a few remaining parts left to be accomplished. Shinobu wouldn't tell me the details, but I had a feeling we're gonna be here for more than a week.
The thought of it made me miss my friends.
"Looks like you wanna call someone?" Proto asked me, "Who do you miss?"
"Everyone back at the city." I sighed again,
The other girls never had a chance to explain what happened at Liberal Arts City. I only had Ruiko's perspective. I felt like I missed a grand adventure when they traveled there. Still, my adventures had been more dangerous. Perhaps it was for the best if I could keep their involvement a bare minimum.
"Aww onee-sama you're so cute." swooned Proto, "Misaka poses cutely as Misaka loves every moment with her big sister!"
"Now you're sounding like Last Order." I snorted,
I missed her too. Despite our brief meeting, I wanted to be the big sister towards her.
I took my phone and went into the favorite section in my contact list.
I wanted to call-
"Otomi? You landed already?!"
Ruiko.
"Yeah we did Ruiko." I smiled, "Only a few hours worth of a flight."
I missed her voice.
"So do you know where you are exactly?" she asked,
"Somewhere in the middle of the ocean." I replied, "Still we're not that far from the country."
Even if it wasn't too long I saw them. I already miss her.
"Otomi, are you ok?" she asked,
"I-I miss you guys." I admitted,
I can hear her giggling and I felt her smiling through the phone.
"Aww, Otomi we saw each other a couple of hours ago." Ruiko replied, "But I miss you too!"
I felt my eyes blurring up for some reason.
"A-Are you crying?" I heard concern in Ruiko's voice,
"It's just, I don't know how long I have to be here." I added, "We could be here for a long time and I already miss you guys."
I poured out my feelings and worries towards my roommate.
"Otomi, I want to spend my time with you too." Ruiko began, "However, we're all aware of your current condition. We want you to get better. So when you make your grand entrance back then we can all hang out again. Just the five of us if you want to be selfish."
I sniffled from her words.
"Ruiko any urban legends you found interesting lately?" I asked wanting to change the topic,
"Well, there's this one that's getting popular lately called Indian Poker." she answered,
What?
"Isn't that a card game or something?" I asked,
"Same name, but it's not." she replied, "Apparently these cards can be used to record dreams. Then you or someone else can experience them!"
Dreams huh? That sounded lovely.
"Also there are some cards which can make you learn skills!" I could feel her grinning through the call, "I'm looking for one about a pro kendama right now."
Now that was a practical use for those cards. A person can literally dream of abilities they want to learn.
This was an interesting rumor. Too bad I'm not there to investigate it with her.
"That's something." I commented,
"There's this one about learning to be a ninja!" Ruiko told me, "I bet you'd love that."
!
"Yes please!" was my immediate response,
"Ohoho got you hooked huh?" she chuckled,
Still, despite these practicalities, I had a uneasy feeling.
If memories can be dreams then it can be exploited. Dark secrets would become blackmail. Friends and loved one would be identified and be held hostage.
For all of it's potential good, there was the other side to be wary of as well.
"I'll call you when I get better." I told her,
Then we hang up.
"Onee-sama, you know you were smiling the entire time right?" teased Proto, "Misaka teases gleefully."
"I know." I admitted,
I sniffed the air and the food smelled amazing.
"I'm hungry." I told Proto,
She beamed up and shouted towards Maya.
"VIP is hungry! She hungers for food!"
I gave her a baffled look while she grinned.
"Of course your majesty!" Maya played along,
You have to be kidding me.
"Somthing smells good."
Sherry arrived alongside Aritomi, Ichiroku and Kayo. All of them were wearing swimsuits.
All three of them looked at Ichiroku.
"Kayo is the same profession as me." our brother pointed out,
"Don't lump me with Prince Butler over there." Kayo rolled her eyes,
"Whatever you say Other Killer Maid." he retorted back,
The two sighed at the same time and went to Maya. Meanwhile Sherry went towards Shinobu while Aritomi stood back.
"How did I ever get myself into this." he sighed,
We could hear everything.
"You know it's this or jail, right?" Proto giggled,
Our former foe sighed again and sat at a nearby bench.
Then I saw food right in front of me.
"Nee-san." Ichiroku offered the meal, "With your current condition, would you like me to feed you?"
What?
"Did Maya put you up with this?" I wondered,
"Yes, it's this or feed them." he listed his choices,
Fair enough.
While I let my brother feed me, I noticed Janie and Febrie chatting with Sherry. Our dark skinned magician looked hesitant with the girls. It's like she's afraid the girls will cry if she said no to them. Shinobu looked amused by the sight.
"Did you bring Ellis?!" Proto yelled towards their direction,
"Who's Ellis?!" an excited Febrie asked her, "Is he a friend?! Can we play with him?!"
Sherry sighed and made symbols around the boardwalk.
"I can't believe I'm doing this." she shook her head,
Wait a minute, she was summoning her golem!
Then it emerged from the sand! The golem was formed from the sand it looked all beachy.
Was beachy even a word? It's made out of sand; it's coarse and rough. I can't hate it, since this was the first time I experienced the beach.
"Woah!" both girls were amazed by Ellis,
Then the two girls started to climb up the golem while Sherry sighed on what she had done. Shinobu frowned on what was happening in front of her.
"Be careful." Shinobu warned them,
The golem was looking at Janie and Febrie with curiosity. He picked them up with his huge hands. The girls were standing on his gigantic hands.
"Let's make a sandcastle Ellis." Janie requested,
The golem put them back down and assisted the girls.
That was a sight to see.
...
After the meal we all decided to return to our respective rooms. It was already nighttime and most of us were fast asleep. I was on my bed while Proto was dozing off.
A part of me wanted to go out again.
"You know it's fine if you wanna sleep first." I told her,
"My job is to keep an eye on you." she said in a daze,
This girl was so dedicated to me.
"I'm not going anywhere." I gestured to my condition, "Besides it's not like I want to go anywhere right now."
"Onee-sama." Proto frowned,
She grabbed my hand and interwind our fingers.
"Please be honest towards your little sister." she gave me a sincere smile, "It's nighttime and you want to go out at the beach. To hear the calming waves and see the moon brightening the dark night. Plus this is a rare opportunity for us!"
I gave in and went out with her.
The moment we left the building I felt a cool breeze.
"This is nice." I sighed contently,
Proto beamed up and pushed towards our spot again.
Closing my eyes, I listened to the waves.
"I wonder what the world is like?" I asked myself then went on, "Academy City is our home, but there's so much more beyond it. Then again, I can't really leave Japan unless I'm given permission. I'm a bit jealous of our Sisters who were able to leave Japan. I bet they're having fun from whatever they were doing."
I felt Proto squeezing my shoulder.
"Onee-sama do you think our onee-sama is still up?" Proto asked,
"Do you want to talk to her or something?" I asked her,
"No, it's more like you need to talk to her." she shook her head, "I'm not the person to ask or talk to when it comes out of the country. I'm as lost as you are. Sure I could simply connect to the Sisters outside the country, but I want you see it with my own eyes just like you."
I let out a soft laugh.
"Alright shall we?" I took out my phone,
I texted Mikoto to see if she was still up.
"Please." I whimpered,
I-I wanted to hear my big sister. I felt safe with her. When I was freed from that dark sphere, I felt at ease despite my condition.
Then Mikoto called me.
"H-Hi."
"You ok Otomi?"
Hearing her voice made me feel at ease.
"I miss you nee-san." I told her,
I heard her chuckling quietly.
"Same, even though it was hours ago." she replied, "Saten gave me a call and told me you called her."
"I was scared and she was the first person I thought to call." I admitted,
"What's there to be scared of?" Mikoto asked worriedly, "And don't you apologize for calling Saten first, I'm just glad you called me even though it's a little late."
I took a deep breath and looked at Proto. She simply gave me a smile.
"Go on." she mouthed,
"I hate this feeling. Feeling helpless like I can't do anything." I began, "I already told Ruiko, I don't know how long I have to say here but there's more to it.
The image of my new body appeared within my mind.
"When I wake up will it still be me?" I wondered, "Will I still be Akami Otomi after I've been transferred to my new body?"
"So that's how they'll help you, right?" Mikoto asked me gently, "A brand new body sounds like the right way to go at it."
I shivered from the words.
"The body I'm residing has been through so much pain." I continued, "It's like if I leave this body and go to my new one. Will it still be really me?"
"I see." was her comment, "You know when I was connected to the Sisters, I was able to talk to Little One. The one you kept on saying was the old you. Before you threw that identity away."
She was in that transformed state for a good while. A lot of events must've happened within her mind.
"G-Go on." I wanted to hear more,
"She said it's time for her to move on." she recalled, "She's loaning you her body until you get your own."
The image of Little One coming out of me appeared.
"I see." I nodded,
It was an odd feeling. Changing one's name didn't change a person's identity immediately. Their actions were what changed the person. When we lost our sisters on that tragic day, a part of me died along with them. Then I met my friends and everything changed. Little One was slowly dying. She was youngest and most dependent. When all of our older sisters perished she wanted to go with them, but I was holding her back.
Even if her mind left, her body still remained. I was the remnants of that. I became my own person. When this was all over, I want to bury Little One with them.
"Thank you nee-san, I-I needed to hear that." I earnestly told her, "I-I love you."
"Love you too." she returned the affectionate saying,
The call ended and I felt at ease with myself.
"It was always that dark feeling within you onee-sama." Proto gestured, "The fact you and Little One were once the same person, but you both became separate individuals is astounding. It's like a split personality and the reserved personality emerged!"
Looking at my hand, I took a deep breath.
"I have to bury the last remnants of the Defective Sisters." I told her, "She's the last one and I'm still in her body."
It felt odd to have my own previous identity become her person. Yet, it always lingered within me.
Everything I did was something Little One wouldn't've possibly done.
"Despite all of the terrible things that happened in that experiment, it led me to you and it was enough." said Proto with smile, "To be honest, I don't know where I would be if not for you onee-sama."
I felt Proto's feelings merging with mine.
"When Shinobu told me there was a defective sister, I was nervous." Proto explained, "Back then, I knew I was different from the others. One I was a higher level than most of them and the appearance of Worst made it more obvious. I felt so out of it, you know? Obtaining the ability to freely express myself allowed me to feel like my own person."
My sister was convinced she was Misaka 20000. When Shinobu revealed her true purpose she felt lost. Her designated name was Prototype Worst. She was bridge between the Sisters and Third Season Project.
In a sense, she was much as a defective sister as I was. Both of us felt distant from the Sisters, but we were able to connect with them now. We had different names but we threw that away. Now, we were living our lives as we see fit. We both saw Shinobu as a maternal figure.
"Alright I think it's time for us to go to bed." Proto yawned,
"Agreed." I seconded her suggestion,
This was relaxing.
END AN: Phew long hiatus and this is back. How long for the next chapter? I'm not too sure to be honest. Looking back at this story, I felt like I went through a phase in my life. Like I really enjoyed creating this story and these main characters. I had some help of course.
Still I'm way older than when I started this story, sheesh!
I mellowed out and am more chill about plenty of things. Fun is a top priority for me, especially with what's happening around the world.
Typing about Otomi gave me that nostalgic feeling again.
Enjoy your day/night!
