I am exceptionally proud to have reached this far! Every time I upload a chapter, I get riled up for a new one, which seriously goes against my personal time and professional life policy, yet I thrive on! Cause determination and willpower shouldn't end! Can you imagine, just after this one battle, I'll set the grandest stage and create an iconic battle between Ash and Lance? I don't care if I have give a spoiler. I am just so thrilled! I keep getting followers and Favs on this story for which I am really grateful for! Now, I have reached that benchmark where I absolutely do not hold an agenda to abandon this story. It's gone for way too long and I have been way to invested in it to drop it in the middle! As I told before, I am a huge Advanceshipping fan and this is my gift to the fandom.

So a new week! A new chapter strategy is going well for me if I have to finish this by the end of 2021. Last time, Ash got himself out from a tough spot against Bruno and is ready to face even a stronger opponent than him. Finally the day has arrived he and Karen are gonna go face-to-face!

Anyway, enough of my rant, as you all clicked the notification link to read the new chapter, and I am not going to make you wait any longer than I already have! Hopefully, you will enjoy the conclusion of the battle!

Location: Acapulco, Porta Vista.

The Nicalou Tower was absolutely a stunning building. According to Misty, it was brand new, and the fact showed. It had a mirrored exterior, reflecting the bright sunlight and blue sky of the resort town. There was still the signature ribbon sign hanging in front, however: this one a brilliant teal with a mirrored charm in the middle, engraved with the letters "PL" for Pokemon League.

''Wow, I can't wait to compete!'' Ash's eyes were sparkling.

''Pika!''

''It's really pretty!'' May squealed.

''Isn't it?'' Misty chuckled.

''Do you realize guys in just mere moments, I am about to collide with my last challenge here?'' Ash inhaled a deep anxious breath.

''Yeah…'' Brock agreed. ''Whatever happens in there, we all need to realize one thing: this was worth taking a break from our lives.''

''You know,'' Misty joined in. ''We never talk how we have grown too. Right from where we began. Whoever knew we'll find one of ourselves taking on the Pokemon League?''

''You didn't think I could achieve that when I was ten?'' Ash quirked a brow.

''To be honest, I thought you couldn't crack so soon,'' Misty replied, shrugging her shoulders.

''Brock is right…'' May sighed. ''I may not be a strong Coordinator now than I was, but ever since we left Petalburg City together, we've met lots of people and Pokemon, learning new experiences. Still, I gotta say…'' she snuggled against Ash. '' I'm really glad I went! I've learned so much on this journey. And I also learned that being with our friends is really, really important!''

''True May,'' Misty smiled brightly at the sparkled of the Pokeball logo at the top of the building. '' Since we've met our Pokémon and walked the same roads together, a lot has happened... We've all changed a lot! We found out that the things we want to do and the things we can do are different for each of us, right? That's what's made our journey so worth it. Somehow, all this just makes me happy."

''Hey, if we talking feelings here,'' Ash gulped too, ''I just wanna let you guys know this…it won't matter to me if I win today or lose. If I lose, I'll be happy I went down giving my best shot, and if I win, it's everyone's win! More than that golden cup are you guys,'' Ash spread his arms, bringing everyone closer. ''Who stuck with me through thick and thin. You guys believed in me and my dreams. I left your side, but you guys never did! Thanks for supporting me in my endeavors. You guys are my family, and I love you all!'' (kisses May's temple)

''Awww…Now why don't you talk like that more often?'' Misty cooed, ruffling his hair, as all four of them cocooned in a group hug. They stayed like that until half a minutes passed, and separated themselves.

Ash hugged each and every one of his friends, holding them close for all of a second as every sentiment he had for them all threatened to leak from his eyes. Before he could hug May last, she stopped him.

"You're not gonna leave without one of these, are you?" she coyly teased, pouting her lips for a beamed and surged forward, clapping his lips to hers and then surging forward for a hug.

"Wouldn't dream of it."

"Ash! Let's go get this in the bag!''!" Misty said, her small chest puffed out.

''Oh, I am gonna!'' Perking up, Ash bared his fangs and pumped his fist.

Ash nodded, and strode towards the entrance of the tower, weaving through, ignoring the giddy looks and whispers as he passed spectator after spectator. Soon enough, the entrance to the Trainers Only area came into view, and he sidled over to the security guards. They knew who he was, but he made a point to show them his ID anyway. No point in causing a controversy today.

"Good luck, Mr. Ketchum," one of the guards said and hushed something in the walkie talkie. The doors parted automatically, letting the gang step inside.

10:01 am, the double doors of the chamber entrance now sealed behind him, Ash Ketchum stood one hallway away from the final person that loomed between him and the Kanto Champion. With nothing more than well wishes from the League staff and the gentle reminder that the League challenge is consecutive and not restartable, he had stepped through the portal.

The passage to the last floor of the building was a short one, but it was the kind of walk that felt like a mile. The solid click of his sneakers echoed through the empty hall, and a quick glance down at the polished floor gave him a glimpse at the bundle of nerves that was about to take on the one of the most powerful trainers in the region.

But this wasn't a road he'd walked alone. The quiet boy from Pallet Town had grown, and along the way he gained multiple powerful Pokémon and the kind of confidence that can only come from equal parts experience, nervousness, and sheer determination. So with a steadying breath, he leveled his gaze and pressed on until the double doors of the hallway closed behind him and the final Elite stood waiting between the towering dynamos of her chamber.

His friends had already found themselves seated. Karen gave him a once over, brushing a lock of wispy silver-blue hair behind her ear A sly smile crept over her lips as he stepped up to the challenger's box. Glad that Ash was an adult and he had started to notice women since puberty because undoubtedly, Karen not only was she one of the toughest challenges of Kanto and Johto combined, but also one of the prettiest women ever born.

She blew her nails, seductively. Donned a perfect attire for the weather, in a yellow spaghetti strap crop tank top that revealed her flat midriff, along with her knee length pants with yellow beads defined her expertise in fashion. Matching with her tank top were her bright yellow heels, distanced apart.

''The wait is finally over! Ash Ketchum has showed up for let's say, one of the fiercest battles of his career!''

Walking to his box with a confidence stride, his jacket swirled around him.

"Well you're a spot younger than I imagined you'd be. I can see why Goodshow had taken a shine to you."

Ash blinked at her forward tone. "Goodshow's told you about me?"

"We talk. He expects a lot from you, you know.'' Karen replied with a curt nod.

''Well, we Ketchums are one of a kind…'' Ash smirked, tightening his gloves, strapping their elasticity.

''But is this Ketchum ready to face the Dark Type Master?''

''I haven't before, but doesn't mean I won't try.''

''Well then hotshot, are you ready to put your Pokemon where your mouth is?'' she crept a confident smirk on her lips, brushing a lock of hair back.

''I am always kombat ready, silver!'' Ash retaliated. ''Just draw!''

Ash sighed in relief, but quickly paled as she jabbed an accusing finger his way.

"Don't tell me you like wisecracks. Is that why Goodshow likes you so much?"

Shaking his head, Ash quickly denied the claim. "No, no, definitely not."

It was Karen's turn to sigh in relief. "Thank goodness, I was afraid I'd have to crush you as fast as possible to avoid hearing any more terrible puns. Now I guess we can enjoy this battle at a much more reasonable pace. However, you can still back out…Got something to say about that tough guy?''

''I am afraid these legs don't know the meaning of that!''

"Just a couple more minutes now! I'm so excited for this battle I could burst!" May buzzed.

Misty's feet pit-pattered on the concrete floor excitedly. '' Ash really pulls up a surprise when it comes to choosing his Pokemon. What Pokemon you think will he choose today, Brock?''

''Given that Miss Karen is a Dark Type Master, I know that he may have added a Bug Type or a Fighting type, but sometimes he just goes impulsive and experiments. Although he's known widely for that, sometimes they just don't work in his favor and I seriously don't want it to be one of those times.''

May shrugged, but smiled, "Who can say? Ash's an unpredictable as they come."

She invested all her beliefs in Ash, frowned as the metal doors to the Trainer Box were strapped, signaling the battle was about to begin soon. She squeezed her half of the Terracotta Ribbon in her hand, scrutinizing the memento.

The announcer's voice boomed out of the PA system, startling some of the group as the powerful voice echoed from the speakers.

''Ding Dong Ringa-Dong! The match has been set underway!''

The jumbotron's screen winked away, appearing as a dormant box for all of a few seconds before bursting with color. A silhouette formed on the screen, backed by an alluring deep purple background. The announcer went on, introducing the competitors.

''Live from the Nicalou Tower, this is Mark Topper, bringing you the main event! Charles Goodshow has spent no expense spared to make this challenge a World Class Event! Well, I do have a cheap microphone but rest aside- !''

''So much for dedication…'' Ash hung his head.

''Battling from the north-end, the most sensational diva and the Wicked Witch of Pokemon League, Give it up for, KAREN! She isn't an Elite for nothing! She shows no mercy once her Pokemon hit the field! A stern, ferocious battler, who's sweeps the competition without any meaningful resistance, she won't let Ash take the gold home so easily!''

The silhouette on the screen filled itself in, revealing a picture of Karen. She closed her eyes and smirked proudly with a hand stationed on her hips, as her Trainer Box whirred and elevated above the field.

She looked as stoic as ever, the summer breeze shifting her steely silver locks away from her face. She lifted her chin and surveyed the trainer opposite, making no move to wave or showboat. She'd let her battling skills do the talking, as she usually did.

Next, the jumbotron brought up another silhouette, a dark figure with wild hair and the shape of a Pokémon on his shoulder.

''And facing off against her, is the trainer who has been a hot topic quite lately! Watch out for Ash Ketchum, as his quick thinking makes his a lot unpredictable which has cleared his challenges in remarkable fashion! He's had what you call an up and down season and you never know what to expect from him! Hailing from Pallet Town, presently the Champion of Alola Region! Let's hear it for 'The Emperor of Tomorrow' Ash Ketchum!''

Ash was slowly raised out of the elevator shaft, dark hair in its usual charming mess. Pikachu was perched dutifully on his shoulder, wearing a confident smirk.

A referee stepped to the sideline, a flag tucked into his shorts at either hip and a whistle around his neck. He raised his arms up, commanding the attention on the field. The camera drones pointed themselves in his direction, the jumbotron treated with his image.

''This is the final official League match between the Challenger Ash Ketchum and Miss Karen of the Elite Four. Each Trainer will choose five Pokemon and the match will be over when all of one Trainer's Pokémon are unable to battle! Only the Challenger will be allowed to make Substitutions. Any items that heal status, restore energy or powers stats are barred. In addition, Mega Evolution, usage of Z Crystals and Dynamaxing Pokemon is disallowed. There is no time limit! Does either Trainer have any questions?''

Ash and Karen both likewise shook their heads. The referee was satisfied and spoke into his body mic, his command booming from the chamber's PA speakers so that everyone could hear clear, since the battle was streaming live.

''Very well! As per League Rules, Karen would choose her Pokemon first, however, Ash will make the first move!''

And there it was. Ash's eyes narrowed as the Elite readied her first Pokéball. Speed. That's what Karen was known for. Her dark type Pokémon weren't only strong, they were fast as well. Cross-legged, Karen activated her Pokeball and threw it into the fray, without an ounce of pomp.

The ball introduced the Elite's first Pokémon; a short, but sleek creature with dark gray fur, a crown of read feathers, and sharp claws. "Weav!" It chanted, bearing a mischievous grin. Thankfully Ash had long become familiar with the red and black colors of Weavile and was able to recognize the blur that vanished as soon as it appeared from Karen's Pokéball.

"A Weavile… I've got just the Pokémon for this. I choose you!" Ash boasted, unlatching his first Pokéball and lightly tossed it up, catching the capsule ball on the backspin and priming it. He wound up and tossed the Poké Ball that contained his response to Weavile, "Lucario, I choose you!"

The Poké Ball burst open and energy leaped out of the open capsule, shaping into the Aura Pokémon before it ever hit the ground. The energy dissipated and Lucario landed on the ground, thumping into the ground on one knee with his eyes pointed down. The canine fighting-type snapped his head up and Lucario growled, baring his pristine white teeth.

Karen nodded, as if accepting Lucario to be a worthy challenger.

Weavile growled and crossed its forearms, The small feathers marking its ears twitched curiously and Lucario snarled back, a tense animosity passing between the two. The jumbotron chimed and the first Poké Ball graphics for Ash and Karen filled in with their corresponding Pokémon.

''I hope that Pokemon is as quick as that mouth of yours is,' Karen taunted.

''Hey, catch him on the action recaps when I am done with you,'' Ash jeered back.

''The battle is set to begin folks as both trainers have brought out their Pokemon! The teamwork between him and Lucario is more than a match for most opponents. And there's Weavile that opens most of Karen's battles, and always brings a solid effort to the field! Sit tight folks! This is one frenzy matchup!''

''Alright, they are starting!'' Misty cheered.

''Go for it, Ash!'' May screamed, ''She's all yours!''

''Three…Two…One….May the Battle Begin!''

''Let's show them, Lucario!''

''raww!'' The jackal gnarled, rushing forward.

''Weavile, go forth!''

''Weav!''

''And we have kicked off! And both Pokemon waste no time making a beeline for each other!''

In a collision, both Pokemon locked fists and claws before reeling behind together.

''Aura Sphere!''

Lucario drew a fist back, charging a ball of pulsing sapphire energy between his paws, pulling back and launching the Aura Sphere with a fluid motion.

"It can't be dodged… Block it, with Ice Shard!"

"Weav… Vile! Vile!" Weavile scraped its claws together and frost billowed off of its body, quickly consolidating into an icy sphere. Aura Sphere bounced, but didn't quite break upon being struck. A second and third shard, however, made it burst loudly.

A slab of ice was chucked at the fighting type, thanks to absurd speed. Lucario snarled and staggered back, a bitter chill stinging his face. The Aura Pokémon shook off the hit and growled, ready to spring back into action.

"Weavile, use Swords Dance." Karen grunted. Weavile released a sharp cry and did a brief routine, making a point of using its arms in an aggressive manner. His claws elongated to a brighter size.

Ash's brows lowered. ''Bone Rush!''

The Aura Pokemon clapped his paws and pulled them apart, conjuring a thick, green bone of spiritual energy until it was almost the size when he was a Riolu. He twirled the staff in his hands, and sprinted, little more than a blue blur as he bounded across the floor. Weavile shifted a step backwards, hackles raised and teeth bared.

''Shadow Claw!''

Weavile lurched forward to counter with claws of spectral power. Lucario perceived Weavile's movements by sensing its aura before they actually happened and dodged, avoiding the first strike and retaliating with a swift blow to the side. Weavile staggered back and swiped again, but Lucario raised the energy rod in his paws horizontally, blocking a second strike, catching the Sharp Claw Pokemon off guard with a hit on the dark type's legs.

Karen frowned, eyes feasting on the sight Lucario hoisting his club again. ''Weavile, get back and use Blizzard!''

The dark type snapped, leaping backwards. Lucario moved to attack again and missed, recognizing that Weavile was out of reach and likewise creeping back with a watchful eye.

Freezing cold air erupted from Weavile's mouth, spreading and dropping the temperature instantly. The brutal cold rushed toward Lucario with a frightening howl. The Aura Pokemon shuddered, doing his best to brave the climate. But, frost clung to his fur, and a faint numbness slowed his pursuit.

''Whoa nice moves,'' Ash shielded himself behind a hand, ''Say it, don't spray it!''

''What a display of power! Weavile is freezing up Lucario as well as the field!''

Karen cracked the faintest of smiles and a slight chuckle slipped out of her. "Impressive. Weavile, use Brick Break!"

Weavile launched its lithe body across the field, one arm glowing white. Weavile landed and immediately struck Lucario with a side-swipe hit that knocked Lucario to the ground.

"Lucario!" Ash cried.

Tumbling, the fighting type shook himself, discarding the snow persisting on his fur. Taking a deep breath, he began channeling his aura once again.

'Shadow Claw!''

Weavile's white-furred paws glowed purple, its small, sharp claws extending menacingly.

''Blaze Kick!''

Lucario growled, spotting Weavile bounding towards him. His leg curled, flaming foot slammed into Weavile's cheek. For a brief moment, the collision lasted; a momentary connection between Weavile's cheek, the expression of concentration for Shadow Claw shifting into shock. The ice type tumbled across the battle field.

It regained its footing, however, sporting a devious grin. Face was seared but it was still in the game.

"It didn't work!?" Misty's mouth gaped. She was sure Lucario had this in the bag!

"But, how!? That move's really super effective!" May was at a loss.

''Just explains how hard it is to take down Karen,'' Brock's brows furrowed.

"Okay, Lucario, use Dark Pulse!" Ash added. Lucario's paw churned with dark, roiling energy and the Aura Pokémon thrusted his arm out, firing the energy at Weavile. The Sharp Claw Pokémon recovered quickly, and Karen dished out a counter.

''Dodge and Ice Shard!''

Rolling quickly out of the beam of disastrous violet rings, Weavile leaped back to its feet.

"Vile!" Only several feet away, the dark type chucked another slab of ice. The Ice Shards bit into Lucario's legs, expanding into solid ice and anchoring the Aura Pokémon to the ground.

''It's probably Lucario body temperature that's making him a target for Weavile's freezing..'' Brock noted.

''Weavile, Brick Break!'' Karen barked and the Sharp Claw Pokemon raced forward.

''Lucario, stop him with Dark Pulse!''

Lucario sent out another blast of shadow, and Weavile easily avoided the counterattack. The Sharp Claw Pokémon appeared in front of Lucario's immobilized form and delivered a devastating strike to Lucario's torso. The thick block of ice held Lucario in place, somehow increasing the pain of the blow.

''That's Ash's signature move!'' Misty recognized, horridly.

''Blaze Kick!''

Ignited feet melted the ice in no time, and Lucario spun on his heel, delivering a roundhouse flaming kick that shattered Weavile's gut.

"Close Combat!"

Weavile found itself on the receiving end of a persistent barrage of punches and kicks, afterward. The Lucario swung at it with vigor, a determined glimmer in his eyes as one haymaker came after the next.

This time, though, it was dodging handily. The punches were sluggish, weighed down by frost and fatigue. Weavile gleefully ducked and sidestepped each punch. The sharp eye and predictive capabilities that its opponent had boasted were getting weary. From the looks of things, he'd gone into this fight tired.

Weavile was more than happy with that. Now, it'd just wait and slash down -

Smack!

Lucario delivered a high kick to the jaw - one the underhanded Weavile clearly hadn't seen coming. The sucker punch - or kick, rather - was followed up by several swifter kicks to the abdomen. The Lucario cried, finishing his short combination with a backflip that nailed his opponent in the jaw.

Karen gained an unnerving grin. ''Revenge!''

Ash gasped. A powerful smack raked Lucario in the face that pushed him off the floor. The Lucario yelped, knocked flat on his back.

''Good, now Brick Break!''

"We're sitting ducks like this. Lucario, return!" Ash called. With a quick flick of his hand, Lucario was safely recalled, spared from any additional damage. Weavile seemed to grin and backed off. Ash glanced down at the dormant Pokéball warmly. ''Thanks Lucario, take some rest. I'll need you later.''

''And quick thinking on Ash's part saves his Pokemon from a devastating destiny once again!''

''It was smart to recall Lucario,'' Misty sighed with relief. ''That Weavile is no joke.''

''Definitely,'' Brock agreed. "Although it's not ideal to have that happen almost right off the bat. I really thought with Lucario's sensory activities, Weavile would be a piece of cake.''

''Don't count us out yet,'' Ash grabbed his second Pokeball and primed it into the fray.

The Single Horn Pokémon burst free from its Poké Ball, crashing into the ground and standing on its powerful hind legs. Its beady eyes bulged as it screeched, "Hera-cross!"

Karen leered, unimpressed by the choice. The jumbotron chimed as it reflected the change.

''The second match is about to begin! Let's get hyped!''

''Focus Punch!''

Heracross dropped to all fours, spread his wings and charged a glowing fist ready.

''Ice Shard!'' Karen countered.

Weavile quickly conjured a chunk of ice, flinging it overhead at its opponent. Before Heracross could alter his path, he was struck, swallowed in a frosty mist.

"That move's always fast…" Ash lamented. ''Carry on! Don't give up!''

The bug biped launched out of the mist with a scratchy cry, throwing a furious punch at Weavile.

''Deflect with Shadow Claw!''

"Weav!" The dark type's claws all took on a violet glow, a pivoting slash crashing one set into the Single Horn's mouth, deflecting it. Weavile continued, aiming a second slash at the midsection. A hefty haymaker denied Weavile that satisfaction, connecting right in Weavile's slim torso. A crack split the tense air and Weavile flew backward from the powerful hit, landing with a thud and gasping as the wind was knocked out of its lungs.

Karen grit her teeth, ''Use Swords Dance again!''

Weavile quickly performed an aggressive dance, boosting its attack even further.

Dust shrouded Weavile, who struggled to push itself to its feet. That had been painful, to say the least.

"Great job! We've got 'em on the ropes now," Ash praised.

''Ice Shard!'' Karen hollered.

"Heracross, use Megahorn." Ash countered. Heracross dropped down to all fours again and charged, its massive horn glowing this time with a different color as far more power was concentrated into it. Heracross charged as Weavile discharged yet another Ice Shard, a frozen, serrated sphere that sliced through the air, but the bug-type lurched up with perfect timing and slashed the frozen block of water in half before continuing its headlong charge.

''Blizzard!''

Weavile blew a stream of subzero air, discharging a frosty snowstorm at its approaching foe. Heracross grit his teeth, losing the momentum of Megahorn. Even by his strong exoskeleton, he shuddered, arms hugged against his body for warmth.

"That move's a pain… But we've still got this. Chip Away!''

The Single Horn Pokemon gawked, lunging at Weavile once more. A right hook came first, followed by an arm thrust that followed the momentum. Fancy handwork allowed several more quick jabs, followed by a strike of his horn. None of these hit their mark. Weavile hopped, ducked, and swerved, handily dodging every one of the Heracross's attacks.

The frustrated bug type croaked, a cry preceded another barrage of punches. The first few punches sorely missed their target. Weavile in general were no slouches when it came to speed. The Pokémon was chattering mocking commentary as it swerved away from the limbs.

"Weav…!" If it could, the crafty pokemon would break into a sweat, awkwardly shuffling back. That was too close.

Karen's eyes arrowed. ''Brick Break!''

A devious grin returned to the Sharp Claw Pokémon's face. It dove forward, slamming a chop brutally into Heracross's forehead. A loud squeal prepared Ash for the worst, his eyes growing wide. Heracross managed to stop his backward stumble and snarled, waiting only for Ash's command to strike back.

"Ice Shard!"

Heracross tried to spring up and swerve out of harm's way. A nagging pain kept him grounded, though, allowing him to be blown back by the dull impact of Ice Shard. Even resisting the move, he whimpered by the terrible nasty chill that had slowed him down.

''Agility!'' Karen threw a hand out.

Weavile had disappeared and taken the form of a dark trail of afterimages. A sudden blur of life zipped past Heracross tipped him off, and a spike in his anxiety told him that his hunch wasn't wrong.

''Shadow Claw!''

Ash wasn't imagining things. In another instant, six slashes of purple light dragged across Heracross's armor, and the bug-type stumbled backward as Weavile passed him by with a Agility-an attack that lived very much up to its name.

Ash stared in disbelief, plainly gawking before he finally managed to collect himself. ''Alright, try to hit him with Focus Punch!''

Heracross was temporarily stunned, but quick to recover from the sneaky hit, his strong legs allowing him to jump high into the air. "Crosss...!" He chanted from above, gathering strength in his hand to cover it in a shining layer of white.

"Hera!" The limb came down like a ton of bricks, striking down into the ground where Weavile stood. But once more, it had sprang away at the last second, leaving the beetle to create a large explosion of dust in the collision's wake. The debris cleared to reveal the beetle standing in a small crater, blinking his eyes every which way in confusion. He'd barely seen it move... It left the bug type flustered. It was very rare that another Pokemon outclassed him so sharply in speed.

''Heracross!'' Ash swallowed. ''Are you ok?''

''Hera!'' the Single Horn Pokemon responded, struggling to right himself.

With that encouragement, Ash turned his thoughts to the current predicament. ''Try Rock Blast!''

Heracross bared his fangs, generating shimmering stones around his bulk. Weavile watched with calculating eyes as Karen tried to think up a counter. The pointy stones came flying at Weavile, rapidly homing in.

'Blizzard and take cover!''

Weavile spewed a thick sculpture of an ice cone, towered enough to shield the Sharp Claw Pokemon. It bounded behind the formation, too quickly for the homing stones to follow effectively. The rock projectiles curved, smashing violently into the unmoving rock formation and failing to do anything.

''Hyper Beam! Tear that thing away!'' Ash pumped a fist.

''cross…'' Heracross cried, firing a blazing orange beam from his mouth. Smoke and icy dust scattered from the blast, backed by a powerful gust. When debris cleared, shards and huge pieces of broken ice were scattered on the floor, but Weavile was missing from the picture.

''Heracross behind you!'' Ash called out, his own eyes following the speedy Pokemon in place of Heracross.

The effects of Hyper Beam had left him numb and disoriented, but a sudden chilling feeling told him that his opponent was close. The bug was holding his head with both hands, doing his best to regain his composure when Ash called out a warning. By the time he looked behind, the sly Pokemon was right in his face, challenging Heracross's gasp with a snide smirk. That was the last thing he saw before two painful slices of Shadow Claw sent him rolling across the dirt. While Weavile rose to its feet unharmed, its opponent lay face down in the dirt, struggling to stand.

Ash seethed, each of his fists closing tightly enough to scratch his palms. This was no good. Weavile was just slapping Heracross around, haven't taken the slightest damage yet.

'Things are gonna get bad if I don't come up with a plan, quick...' Ash lamented in silence, eyes narrowing as he pondered the situation.

Powerful legs pushed Heracross to stand. He was still in the game, and had no intention of giving up! As soon as Ash gave him an order, he was ready to follow, and there wasn't any long wait before that order came.

''Focus Punch!''

The Single Horn Pokemon sprung on still healthy legs, fist lit up with a right hook thrown with a shriek.

''Block it with Shadow Claw!''

"Weav… ile!" The Sharp Claw Pokémon grunted, roughly slamming a shadow-laced claw into Heracross's fist.

Ordinarily, a fighting type overpowering a dark type with respective moves would be an easy bet. With Heracross airborne, sluggish, and having launched off of only one foot, weight and momentum didn't favor him. Weavile bared a mischievous grin, bucking Heracross off with a swing of its arm. But its assault didn't end there. Several thorough slices across Heracross's body followed, purple streaks crossing him one after another.

The bug-fighting type cried, landing on one knee.

Ash stared at his Heracross, raising a brow. ''Use Aerial Ace to speed yourself!''

The vigor behind Ash's words gave Heracross a second wind of vitality, allowing him to dash off in a speedy blue blur that climbed up above the ground, immediately hovering with speed that would make Weavile jealous.

''What does he think he's doing?'' Karen mumbled. ''Agility!''

Weavile with all of its pride in craftiness and agility, wasn't going to take that sitting down. A black blur followed, quickly scaling the floor before leaping after its fleeing target.

''Come on Heracross! You can do it!'' The trainer watched on with a budding smirk, putting all of his hopes in his strategy succeeding.

Heracross focused, darting forward faster. Weavile wasn't far behind, though, getting closer to its target with every leap. Its silver claws were bared, ready to strike down Heracross as soon as it got the chance.

Ash, however, had no intention of letting that happen. ''Fly above!''

Heracross took heed and ascended above, using his ability of flight. Weavile, who had already made its latest jump, coming closer and closer to the coleopteran with no means of stopping. There was nothing much more it could do, as his claws raked the air where Heracross was only a second ago. Heracross returned his snide grin, watching Weavile's shocked expression as it pummeled down on the ground.

''Rock Blast!''

The Pokemon crossed his arms downward, firing off on boulder after the other. Weavile's pupils dilated as the rocks began to rain down all over it, pinning it below their pile.

"Alright! We did it!" Ash pumped a fist in the air, already celebrating their success.

''Really, did you?'' Karen raised a brow. 'Blizzard.''

He had spoken too soon though, it seemed, as the boulders began to change their earthly color, and became overwhelmed by the crooked, freezing blast of ice. Once their molecular structure was crumbled, Weavile burst out, shrieking wildly. The dark type slowly pulled itself to its feet, huffing in a haggard attempt to regain its breath.

If Ash didn't know any better, he would say that his jaw had dropped past his knees. "What? It didn't work!?You've gotta be kidding me..." Sweat rolled down his forehead, eyes narrowed upon the recovering opponent.

"If they keep going like this, I would have no energy left to bat out her rest of the team..." He reached to scratch his head, determined to stay in control-of his own emotions as well as the battle. ''Heracross, Megahorn, full power!''

Grunting in undignified fury, Heracross took off after bucking his horn into an oliver green. Now, Weavile was a perfect target, and Heracross had every intention to drive his horn through it.

''Blizzard!''

''Whoa! How much pulverizing can this dude take?''

Weavile stood like a Stantler in headlights, knowing full well the consequences of standing still and taking the hit. Instead, it leapt clear over its opponent, soaring airborne from behind a very confused Heracross, who had skidded to a stop when his opponent was nowhere to be found.

The other Pokemon's small mouth parted wide, charging an icy blue, chilling sphere of energy. This one came faster than Heracross could think to respond, striking the beetle directly in the back. A pained hiss left him through clenched teeth, and Heracross was hardly able to move as a chilling sensation ran through his every nerve, leaving the entire backside of his body feeling numb... And, watching on, Ash would be able to see why.

Heracross's entire back had been frozen solid, covered cleanly in a blocky layer of ice. Try as he might, the fighting beetle was unable to move much at all, encumbered by the weight of the ice, and half of his body felt rather numb to boot. Heracross winced, thoroughly irritated to find himself defenseless against Weavile.

Who, speak of the devil, was swooping in from above, both claws glowing and extended for a particularly devastating Brick Break attack on Karen's command. Ash could only watch on in horror, unable to act as his Pokemon stood defenseless in the wake of a potentially finishing blow. 'C'mon, Ash, think... There's gotta be some way to break outta that ice...'

Suddenly,

''Huh?'' Ash's eyes widened, only to have his attention stolen away by a furious red glow. Looking over, he found the source to be Heracross. Heracross bulked, growling in what came off as justified indignation. Every bit of vigor in his system doing its best to overcome the numbness. Luckily, only moments passed before the Single Horn tensed and broke the layer of ice block on is back, shattering it all into a million pieces!

Much to Weavile's dismay, who was already closing in on Heracross in mid-leap. The creature's eyes widened to the size of saucers as it found itself unable to stop its descent, making it the ideal target for Heracross's retaliation.

''Do it!'' Ash whooped. '''Focus Punch!''

''Oh ho! Weavile's in serious trouble!''

Weavile gagged, as air was crushed out of its windpipe by Heracross grabbling his neck. The Sharp Cry Pokemon tried to weasel out of his chokehold, only to sight Heracross's gaze that made him scare further. The bug type steadied, drawing his fist back. Weavile screeched, as the earth-shattering punch was delivered right into its unprotected gut. Heracross let go off the dark type.

The jarring hit sent the unconscious Weavile flying, sliding across the dirt before landing in a slump. One foot placed before the other in a dramatic, battle-ready stance. Huffs and puffs left the exhausted Pokemon, though, showing that the intense battle had clearly taken its toll.

It didn't take long for the referee to scout out the result. "Weavile is unable to battle! Heracross wins!''

''Man…That was the strongest Weavile we ever faced…'' Ash sighed, but grinning brightly. ''That was awesome, Heracross! That was a really tough match, but I just knew you could pull it off!" Whether Ash knew it or not, he was smiling cheek to cheek, irises positively glowing over the awesomeness of that battle.

''Way to go, Ash!'' Misty leaped from her seat. ''You shook her up!''

"I guess Karen really is gonna be a handful, huh...? Just think, if all of her Pokemon are super strong like that Weavile... Ohhh, I can't wait!'' May gushed, flustering.

''Guess, Weavile won't be playing any encores! Ash is in the lead of the match!''

Calmly, Karen returned her partner. "I'm impressed. We haven't had to rely on this strategy in quite some time. Try and get past this…" She flicked her wrist, revealing her second Pokeball, and sending out the Pokemon inside.

The Poké Ball burst open and the energy inside it instead took to the skies, shaping itself into Honchkrow. As the light went away, the dark-feathered flying-type sliced through the air in a wide circle, scanning the battlefield below as well its opponent in Heracross. With a haughty chirp, Honchkrow descended and landed gracefully at the top of a tall stalagmite near Karen, puffing out its chest and stretching its wings to show the hidden crimson feathers on the inside.

Ash nodded approvingly at the choice. But his concern wasn't on the Elite's thin boast, and he stared hard at where Heracross stood proudly.

"Are you okay to keep going?" he asked, mindful of Heracross's downfall from earlier. This time though, his partner should have been close to full strength from his strong regenerative attacks.

Heracross shook his head, and trilled in the affirmative.

''Karen is the most serious player of the Elite Four, maybe the best! And she would rather prove that on the field, rather than talk to anybody. Add her Honchkrow to the mix, and you got troubles. Ash is one hothead, because he always brings in the heat! And with Heracross's Guts activated, Honchkrow met its match!''

Ash was quick to take the initiative. ''Focus Punch!''

''cross!'' Heracross stood upright, raring to show Honchkrow just how tough he was. He focused his strength in his fists, lighting each extremity with a brilliant cloud glow. The pokemon cried with vigor, punching forward with both hands at one.

''Here we go! Off and running!''

"Dodge it and use Haze!" Karen crossed her arms.

Honchkrow happily obliged by spewing a dark plume of smoke all over the field, obscuring everything (including Heracross), consequently causing Focus Punch to miss.

"Whoa this is intense! What could be happening behind the thick cloud of smoke!''

When Heracross landed on the tainted field, driving his head in confusion, Ash was looking visibly annoyed. ''Well, at least we know you'll need a sneak attack to beat me!''

Karen chose not to answer or explain, she simply smirked as she called for Honchkrow's next move. This time said move was going to prove to be far more useful in combat: "Shadow Ball!"

''Dodge it!''

Although cautious, Heracross had to take extra precious moments to make sure he could make a clean landing; the blackened color was making it harder to find a clear landing spot, and the notable crevice that carved the field in half all posed a threat to maintaining balance.

It proved costly as Shadow Ball slammed right into Heracross with calculated precision. Something else came as a consequence of that, made obvious to both trainers when Heracross skid across the floor. Evidenced by Heracross's hesitation to dodge immediately from the last attack, the black color made many of the obstacles on the field made earlier much harder to see. And this was a complete non-issue for Karen's Flying-type that would spend very little time on the field's surface.

''Bulk Up!''

Karen grimaced as she heard the name of that move, for she was no stranger to it. For certain Pokémon that had superb stats in one area while severely lacking in another, a move like this could change the whole game if an opponent was not prepared to deal with the consequences of said change… and of course, assuming the trainer ordering the move knew how to best make use of it.

Crimson red glow increased Heracross's inner muscles, and exhaling a sigh, Heracross grunted.

Misty nodded as she mumbled to herself in reflection of these past few turns. She looked at Honchkrow. ''Karen has got the bigger advantage now, but Ash still has plenty of ways to take Honchkrow out.''

Brock hummed. ''It only comes down to what Ash thinks it is the best way to handle it. Enhanced power can make up for downgraded defenses, and a stronger defense can wear down Honchkrow down so it can strike back at just the right moment. But Heracross has taken a lot of damage from Weavile already, even with a decrease in attack power, it wouldn't take Honchkrow long to take him down. It's a tough call to make.''

"Honchkrow, assume the vulture attack pattern!'' Karen called out. "Use Night Slash and make sure you rise above the haze!"

It was her way of playing dirty. By rendering Ash and Heracross blind, the playing field now completely belonged to Honchkrow.

The Big Boss Pokémon's wings glowed in a brilliant, vivid purple color that was strong enough to remain visible within the dark haze. It dove gracefully into the haze, drive-by smacking Heracross while consumed in the darkness, and finally coming back above the haze. Swiftly, it flew in circles nearby the dark fog, bringing wisps of it along. Honchkrow continued to circle around the battlefield, much like the typical vulture, and as a result, no one was able to see Heracross until the haze dissipated. Heracross was unable to see its opponent and Ash was unable to see Heracross. However, Honchkrow made use of the haze and formed spiral shapes, which everyone was perfectly able to see.

''Karen seems to be taking the control!''

''Grrr…'' Ash bit. ''Try getting out of this one! Rock Blast!''

Though it was immersed in a thick haze, Heracross was still able to hear his trainer perfectly fine. Without restraint, he conjured up piles of little that remained gave the falling boulders an interesting affect, which turned Karen's own strategy against her, costing a good deal of pain.

As expected, the rock-type move hit Honchkrow rather hard. Completely defenseless in the air, it was soundly forced back to the ground halfway, battered by the rocks. Oddly enough, Heracross was nowhere to be seen.

Karen frowned at the field, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.

''Honchkrow, fly up!''

''Façade ad Bulk Up immediately!'' Ash barked.

Not a second later, Heracross burst out from the haze and was much closer to the still-recovering Honchkrow than Karen had thought. There was no time to shout out an order, as Heracross harshly rammed into the Big Boss Pokémon and sent it skidding along the field. Just after that, Heracross growled fiercely, flexing his claws and briefly glowing, as if to foreshadow an ominous ending forthcoming. It was a very strong attack for Honchkrow to handle, evident when it had difficulty standing on two legs, much less being able to fly.

''I gotta hand it to Ash,'' May noted. ''He's making the best of his advantage with Heracross.''

''Bringing Façade into play gave Heracross an extreme upper hand. With status inflicted, Guts and Façade is a dangerous combination.''

Karen became fully aware just how risky Heracross now was. With Guts and Bulk Up, Heracross had got a ton lot of stronger than before, and with moves like Rock Blast and Facade- there was an overwhelming disadvantage on her side too. She was forced to cut down closed ranged attacks, if she wished Honchkrow would stay longer to finish the job.

''Heracross has busted some Mad moves on Honchkrow! How long till the Big Boss Pokemon keeps it up?!''

She couldn't simply keep Honchkrow up in the air lobbing endless Shadow Ball attacks either; she learned from the battles Ash had fought her comrades that getting too comfortable mentally with a battle's progress would leave herself open to the determined Ash who would be waiting for her to get lazy with her strategy.

''How about that,'' Ash mused, ''It looks like I can beat Honchkrow after all.''

"Get airborne now, Honchkrow!" Karen shouted furiously. She had officially lost her patience. She was right about that at least, as to battle Ash Ketchum, judgement and decision would need to take in less than a minute.

''Follow Honchkrow, and pummel it with Chip Away!''

''Keep dodging!'' Karen instructed, though she knew it was unlikely that the Big Boss Pokémon would be able to dodge them all. He turned out to be correct; Honchkrow outmaneuvered its opponent for the first few strikes, but its waning stamina eventually allowed Heracross to land in a strike, sending Honchkrow toppling.

The impact of landing was rough, as evidenced by Honchkrow twitching as it tried in vain to stretch out its wings to fly. It was getting close to strike the deal with a final Hyper Beam, but Ash held back. He had a feeling there was a reason why his opponent opted to have her Pokémon dodge instead of counterattack.

Ash knew what exactly Guts did for the Single Horn Pokemon – his offensive power was raised a notch in exchange for becoming a bit more vulnerable. Though the power boost was not particularly drastic by any means, it was obviously enough to make Heracross's attacks knock Honchkrow clear out of the sky, which was a notable improvement from what the attacks were doing before.

However, there was a price. Heracross was still reeling the effects from freezing, and with every turn, he was losing his stamina. However, one or two more direct hits from Honchkrow would be enough to put Heracross out of commission now, and thanks to that partial flying-typing, Heracross had only two close-ranged moves to work with. Honchkrow looked to be wide open for a follow-up attack, but Ash had a feeling this was a trap.

''Roost!'' Karen threw a hand forward.

Battered less worryingly, Honchkrow glowed a soft white, recovering energy.

''That's the spirit,' Ash commended, ''Heracross, try and clinch this win with Focus Punch!''

Though he had taken he had taken a fair share of damage as well, the Single Horn Pokémon retained his spunk and flashed Ash a thumbs-up in agreement.

Karen watched the opponent soar into air, hand glowing obviously intent on making the final blow a devastating and decisive one. Honchkrow wearily looked up before glancing back to its trainer. When Heracross made its descent with one hand charged with much of its energy, that was Karen's cue.

''Honchkrow, Foul Play!''

''Fuck!''

May could only gawk as she watched quite a scene unfold. Just as Heracross was about to land a direct, critical hit with Focus Punch, one of Honchkrow's wings glowed with a dismal black and purple energy. Only needing to raise this single wing to get the job done, Honchkrow effortlessly smacked Heracross away.

Ash could only look on in horror as Heracross was flung back to his side of the field. He crashed into the tainted rock; a plume of smoke rose up from the harsh impact. Everyone fixed their gaze on the impact site, waiting for the smoke to clear…

Moments later, when the smoke dissipated, the reactions differed: May was perplexed, as from her position in the room she had trouble seeing where Heracross was. She squinted in hopes of seeing the details, but all she really needed to see was Ash's face to know what the end result of this clash was.

The Single Horn Pokemon lied in the center of a deep crater made in the rock of ice, wincing from the brutality.

Karen crossed her arms, foot tapping impatiently. ''Not bad, not bad at all.'' Narrowing her eyes into a squint, she mumbled. ''Sky Attack!''

Honchkrow didn't need any verbal command further, in its current state, the Big Boss Pokémon knew it was meant to go out with a bang, not only to prove its own worth, but to aid its comrades.

Ash's worries slumped down into sheer tension as he saw the plump bird force its way in the air - the nearly blinding white aura of energy surrounding Honchkrow allowing it to persevere against the harsh elements – and plow itself straight through Heracross. With a struggling eye open, Heracross smiled lastly with a proud determination.

An explosion was triggered as Honchkrow drove itself into the stag beetle, a strong, hot one that consequently kicked up a great deal of steaming fog from the battlefield. Visibility for all human beings in attendance was hindered, and they had no choice but to wait for it to clear to see what became of the two Pokémon in the heart of the blast.

Sadly, yet unsurprisingly, Heracross was seen on the field, huddled over and unmoving, while Honchkrow crowed out a triumphant caw. Now everyone could see what happened, meaning it was the referee's cue.

''Heracross is unable to battle! The winner is Honchkrow!''

''Whoa! What a major upset for Ash! We just witnessed Karen takes the win this time and ties the score, with both Trainers losing one Pokemon each!''

Ash was in utter shock, gaze fixed on his unconscious Heracross.

"H-how…?" May gasped. "I thought Honchkrow had no energy left to fight or defend…and Heracross was excelling. How could that one attack cause this?"

''It was because Ash made the sole mistake of using Bulk Up,'' Brock sighed, wishing he wouldn't have to narrate that.

''How could that be a reason?''

''Foul Play works best when the opponent has its Attack Stat increased. Higher the Attack, the faster the user can turn it against them,'' Brock squinted. ''All I can say is Karen was waiting for the right moment.''

''Return, Heracross,'' Ash grinned sadly, as he recalled the Bug type. ''It was nothing short of excellent, thank you very much. Get some rest, you deserve it!''

He bowed his head, and laughed. ''That was a lot more than Foul Play wasn't it? Judging how strong that Sky Attack was, wasn't that all Super Luck's doing?''

''Correct,'' Karen confirmed with a wink. '' "There's more to a battle than just how the Pokémon fight. The ability to communicate with your Pokémon without words and confuse your opponent is an invaluable skill to have."

Ash agreed, withdrawing the next Pokeball. Honchkrow had taken a severe amount of damage from Heracross, and the timing couldn't be any better. He threw the Pokeball into the fray, ''Swellow, I choose you!''

The capsule soared high into the air and burst open, releasing Ash's Swellow into the sky for all to see. Swellow launched out, crowing as he climbed further and further up into the sky. The slim bird swooped back around, stretching eagerly in midair before glancing across at the field.

"Krow!" The evolved crow followed suit, staring at his counterpart as he flew before him at the same altitude. Swellow screeched back in response.

''Time to forget about everything and concentrate on winning,'' Ash chanted.

''Swellow's nimble and smooth moves are so feared that kids in Pallet Town battle in secret! I would have elaborated if I knew what I meant! It's no secret both sides wanna win bad!''

''Battle Begin!''

''Swellow, Aerial Ace!''

"Swellow!" The Hoenn bird rushed leaving a white trail behind him, speeding low across it like a missile. Glowing white streaks of energy formed a protective cone around its body, filling with power and starting to sing in the wind as the bird Pokémon zoomed toward its target.

Karen only moved slightly the line of her mouth, making it clear she was mildly impressed, perhaps with the attack's speed. "Honchkrow, dodge and use Night Slash!"

"Honchkrow!"

The crow veered a little to the side, barely avoiding Swellow's strike. As Honchkrow's wings emanated with an eerie purple glow, streaks of that hue were left behind as it made its way over to the opponent.

"Double Team, now!" Ash shouted.

Right before Honchkrow's wing struck him, Swellow copied itself over and over, until the Big Boss Pokemon was surrounded. Swellow hid alongside its many decoys and as soon as the Night Slash hit its target, it fizzled out revealing it was just an illusion. The Hoenn bird began multiplying all over the field, spreading his clones at such speed, each of them crowing relentlessly at Honchkrow. The dark-type shivered, bothered by the relentless screeching noise, it was but impossible to tell which the real one was.

"Not bad, I admit it," said Karen in a stoic voice. "Honchkrow, Aerial Ace!"

Honchkrow trilled and pivoted, speeding toward Swellow with a loud whistle. Karen knew utilizing the wind's power was a very handy tool. Even though Ash had maintained possession of the match almost the entire time, she remained calm, knowing all would fall into place in her favor ifs he granted just the slightest bit of patience (much as she hated to do so).

''You use Aerial Ace too, Swellow!''

Dozens of the Swallows raced forward, enveloped in the damaging aura. Not bothering with time-consuming techniques this time, Honchkrow directly flew at its target with the move that couldn't be dodged. The clones and the Big Boss Pokemon clashed, only the Honchkrow's beak had to kill numerous clones to reach Swellow, which led a gain in Swallow Pokemon's timing.

Both birds clashed against each other and were knocked backwards, being evenly matched in their attack power.

"Use Sky Attack!" Karen called out, and within seconds the Big Boss Pokémon was glowing with that strong, familiar energy again; Swellow was the imminent target.

Relatively calm about this threatening move, Ash had an idea. "Swellow, counter with Brave Bird!" he yelled, and promptly the Regional Bird Pokémon built up energy that made it literally seem that it was on fire.

The fire soon dissipated into sparkling blue energy as Swellow reached full power. The powerful flying attacks made an explosive collision, shocking the audience as the smoke obscured much of the air. But Swellow was soon seen falling back, clearly injured by the contact. Still, it was sent flying back beyond its control, worrying Ash and Pikachu both.

''What a clash! I don't think anybody has ever seen anything like this before!''

"Swellow, no!" he cried out, apprehensive when Honchkrow emerged from the smoke looking relatively unscathed.

Karen decided to not let this opportunity go to waste. "Night Slash, go!"

With a single glowing wing, Honchkrow was once again in pursuit of the ailing Swellow, who struggled to regain control of its movement. Ash only hoped Swellow was able to heed his orders in this state.

"Now, dodge it with Aerial Ace!" Ash commanded, which Swellow clearly heard and regained its focus. Just before Honchkrow could slam its wing over Swellow's head, the Swallow Pokémon zoomed up and over its much larger opponent. Honchkrow quickly turned around, not even taking a moment to be surprised or dumbfounded by Swellow's sudden dodge.

Proudly punching ahead, Ash continued, ''Now attack!''

Swellow darted upward, charging up and preparing for another brutal impact. Karen was tired of being a slave to the wind, however. As she could attest, Swellow's attack, while still pretty fast, was notably slower than the previous one, evidencing the Swellow had taken a hit. That was a relief; at least now she could see her foe when she attacked, as Honchkrow could never match such speed.

''Honchkrow, Haze once again!''

Like in the previous battle, Honchkrow filled the entire stage with a dark, obscuring smoke. Honchkrow flew well above it, able to be seen, but Swellow was completely obscured just as Heracross once was.

''Hm,'' Ash remarked with amusement, ''Did you really think I would fall for the same thing twice? It seems rather foolhardy for you to repeat your strategy with me, because even without having seen it beforehand, I would catch on very quickly to your motives."

''Don't assume I would be so careless,'' Karen barked back.

''Then we should both be careful,'' Ash balled his fist, ''Hurricane! Clear that haze!''

Swellow beat his wings furiously. The winds began to stir at an unnatural rate, spreading like a vile plague. A storm of wind rose, nearing the level of hurricane, kept increasing in magnitude without any sign of stopping, as it covered more and more of the vicinity.

The dark clouds were being driven away, that couldn't stand a chance against the turbulent rage of the winds. Honchkrow was immediately exposed, squawking to gain height, however, finding itself struggling against the blades of the gale. Swellow smirked, funneling more wind energy into his apocalyptic hurricane.

''Lousy weather for Pokemon battling!''

Honchkrow was buffeted harshly, and its torture was only eliminated when Hurricane subsided.

"Honchkrow, Night Slash!"

"Krow!"

"Swellow, counter with Wing Attack!" Ash replied.

"Swellow!"

Both birds once again clashed in an aerial duel, exchanging wing slaps with hardened wing and dark energy, causing purple and silver sparks to fly with each strike. They seemed to be evenly matched, but from below Karen could see that, slowly but surely, Honchkrow was gaining the upper hand.

Meanwhile, Ash was having similar thoughts. Swellow was now running on pure willpower, but he was about to hit his limit. Finally, when Swellow missed a wing slap, Honchkrow landed two, first on the head and then on the back, plummeting him to the ground.

"Dark Pulse, now!" Karen ordered, which Honchkrow immediately followed. It spewed a beam of dark, purplish energy straight at Swellow, landing a direct (and critical) hit.

"Swellow!" Ash cried out with concern, but was relieved when Swellow quickly reclaimed his bearings.

The birds glared at each other, knowing this was far from over. Karen had no interest in this developing rivalry, however. She was ready to wrap this up and leave as quickly as possible.

''Aerial Ace!''

Honchkrow streaked and made a beeline for Swellow. Now the roles were reversed, but Ash wasn't done with Karen yet, not by a long shot!

''You use Aerial Ace too!'' Ash shouted, determined and focused once again.

The considerably quicker Swellow whirled around and picked up speed while approaching Honchkrow with a build-up of energy, ready to return the favor.

''These two birds are hoping to run their frequent flier cards! These Pokemon are hitting the stratosphere….expect they are miles away from it….''

"Dodge it!" Karen commanded, figuring it could work for her if it could work for Ash. Honchkrow ducked underneath Swellow at the last second, letting the Swallow Pokémon zoom straight past it.

Ash was quick to pick up on this and continued his assault. "Use Aerial Ace and fly down!" The idea was to use the clever maneuvering to get close enough to Honchkrow, apparently. Swellow looped around and darted in a zigzag motion toward the opponent.

The two birds did not collide, but that was not Ash's intention in the first place. Swellow simply flew downwards, passing by Honchkrow and was conveniently close enough to snag the peck the bird's back in victory. It was a big surprise for Honchkrow to be tricked like that, and Ash was ecstatic.

"Awesome!" he cheered.

"Sky Attack!"

… For Karen's Honchkrow to counter-attack seemingly out of nowhere, landing yet another critical blow on Swellow.

Ash was horrified, watching his Pokémon go down. "Swellow, no!"

And Karen wasn't done yet. "Night Slash!"

Honchkrow loomed behind the injured and seemingly-unaware Swellow with its glowing wing once more, but Ash wasn't going down so easily.

''Double Team!''

Swellow once again blurred his body, duplicating into excess forms. Night Slash missed decimating a false Swellow in front of it, saving the real Swellow from another critical hit.

''Hey, wait a sec! Swellow's playing some 'D'!''

''Aerial Ace!'' Ash cried out, hoping Swellow, had the strength to keep this up. Perhaps it was Honchkrow's good luck that allowed it to dodge that potential nasty collision; Swellow shot like a bullet past the Big Boss Pokémon. Ash was effectively stunned.

''Foul Play!'' Karen winced.

Karen said flatly just before Honchkrow caught up with Swellow and slammed it viciously with tilt a whirl slam. Swellow was thrown down straight into the ground, cracking it and skidding off some ways before finally stopping.

It was a tense and stressful battle to even watch, if Brock, Misty's and May's reactions were evident.

"Wow, Honchkrow dodged Aerial Ace," May said breathlessly; her eyes glued to the scene.

"This is not a good thing," Brock told her. "If Aerial Ace won't work, Swellow hasn't any other moves that can match Honchkrow's speed."

Swellow was down. However, Honchkrow loomed over menacingly, and things were not boding well for Ash at all. Even Karen was a bit impressed with Honchkrow's abilities today. She usually relied on Weavile for unbeatable speed; as far as standard Flying-types go.. Perhaps the long road to recovery inspired Honchkrow to put more effort than usual into this match, and for that, Karen was pleased.

Ash's elevator lowered so he could properly communicate with his downed Pokémon. He knew in his heart that Swellow just wasn't done yet in spite of how it looked.

"Show 'em how strong you are, Swellow!" he shouted in desperation. Following Pikachu's cries, Swellow opened an eye and twitched, regaining its ability to move. There wasn't much left in the tank, but Swellow itself knew it couldn't allow itself to quit and let Ash down again. The last thing it wanted to see was Ash's hopes and dreams crushed.

Said rival also descended on her elevator, leveling with Ash. Seeing the challenger's spirits fall, Karen laughed, "You're bold, I'll give you that. But if that's the best you can do, this battle might be shorter than I hoped."

And now, Karen was ready to show Ash a preview of that upcoming misery by defeating another of his Pokemon. "Wrap it up with Sky Attack!"

It seemed to be the end. As Honchkrow charged up, the audience looked on with bated breath. Ash growled in frustration upon hearing that, unwilling to let it end this way.

"YOU CAN DO IT, SWELLOW!" Ash screamed out; what was always his last resort in encouraging his Pokémon.

And surprisingly, it worked. Swellow regained its strength and took to the air just before Honchkrow made contact with the severely weakened Pokémon. No one seemed to expect this.

The Swallow Bird showed off its aggression by growling fiercely at Honchkrow, who it was face-to-face with at this point.

Just because her opponent's Pokémon recovered didn't guarantee a win; Karen knew that very well. She pulled it off once, and knew she could do so again with ease if she just remained focused.

"Just stay calm!" Karen advised, showing nothing but disdain for Ash's achievement. "Night Slash!"

Honchkrow knew to take this seriously; both wings now glowed rather than just one. It charged at Swellow, but Ash felt rejuvenated with the excitement of Swellow's long-reputed stubbornness.

"Swellow, dodge it now!" he yelled out, which Swellow followed through with ease. It appeared Swellow's rage really upped its overall speed, which would be difficult for the overworked Honchkrow to compensate for. And Honchkrow certainly did put all of its effort into its attack, slashing at the Swallow Pokémon repeatedly with all its might, but Swellow outmatched its foe at every twist and turn.

One brief pause in Swellow's movements to relish in its apparent victory was cut short when Honchkrow finally landed a hit, raking Swellow with a talon. As it fell, Karen was quick to urge Honchkrow to pick up the slack and finish this match before Swellow could overwhelm the competition.

"Finish this!" Karen yelled, now unable to help feeling a bit anxious over this ordeal. It was definitely making her stomach flip-flop, but for now, she had no choice but to endure it.

"Head straight at Honchkrow, use Wing Attack!" Ash followed suit, matching Karen every step of the way now. Both birds rushed for the each other, neck-and-neck. As the two side-glanced at each other, a fight suddenly broke out. Honchkrow and Swellow circled each other, exchanging blows in an attempt to throw the other off track.

It was quite distracting, but Karen figured Honchkrow had the right idea and decided to make Swellow's defeat a sure thing. "Foul Play!" she ordered in timely fashion, as Honchkrow landed a fierce hit with its foe in close range. The temporary stun Swellow suffered after gave Honchkrow the time it needed to zip ahead, but it was hot on Honchkrow's tail once it realized what was going on.

''Time to play my cards,'' Ash leaned and punched forward, ''Reversal!''

Thanks to Swellow's speed, it wasn't long before the two Pokémon were once again neck-and-neck, and yet another brawl broke out in mid-descent. This time, however, Swellow was bringing something different to the table: fierce kicks from its legs that landed particularly harshly upon the Big Boss Pokémon.

The trio too noticed the change, and May was quick to point it out. "Look at that!"

Karen was taken aback by this. "What…?!"

"Swellow knows Reversal!" Misty exclaimed, properly identifying the technique.

"Right!" Brock confirmed. "Reversal's a Fighting-type move that becomes powerful when the user is low on steam, and it's super-effective against Dark-types like Honchkrow!"

It helped that Reversal itself was a fiercely powerful move, evident as Swellow finished up with a devastating right hook from its wing, knocking Honchkrow silly. It fell back, awaiting further orders.

"That was so awesome, Swellow!" Ash congratulated, overjoyed with the results even though the battle was not yet over.

''Now, Brave Bird!''

Swellow agreed and resumed the battle, flying towards its objective, ignited. Karen was quick to react to this, determined to prevent Ash from coming out of this battle with all good news. "Honchkrow, get them first, Sky Attack!" She was honestly running low on clever ideas at this point, running on pure desperation and refusal to lose to the Pallet Town trainer.

But try as it might, even as Honchkrow darted straight for the target, Swellow easily made it to the Big Boss Pokemon first, bolting through its chest with the tackle. While Honchkrow cursed at the delay of his Sky Attack, Swellow faced the unwanted recoil damage.

"Night Slash!" Karen called out as the chase resumed.

"Dodge it!" Ash instructed, which Swellow again did with relative ease compared to how it fared against Honchkrow. Swellow managed to loop around and end up right behind Honchkrow, leaving the latter wide open for an attack. Ash was keen on the details for once and took advantage of this. "Alright, use Brave Bird again!"

It was at this point in battle where Brave Bird came in handy, as though it also damaged the user; the end point of the battle usually nullified that drawback.

As Swellow charged forth, bursting with energy, Karen knew it was wise not to ignore the potential of such a devastating move. "Sky Attack!"

''These birds are at each other once again, and won't leave this building until one of them is put out of commission! Man, my nerves can't take it anymore!''

Honchkrow whirled around, enveloped with energy as it came straight towards Swellow. An explosive collision resulted in their clash, way out beyond the range of the explosion. An explosion rippled through the skies, igniting it with thick smoke.

Out of the smoke, both the avains plummeted towards the ground, heading for a crash. But Karen was faster.

''Use Roost!''

A faint, commanding voice rung in Honchkrow's eardrums, and he accepted the order. Glimmering in a blinding light, it recovered, although whatever was replenished was not enough, as evident by the heavy, raspy breaths. It was like, Honchkrow had just been awoken from a nightmare.

''Mirror Move, Swellow!'' Ash chided, hoping Swellow would hear him as well. But Swellow had taken the worse part of the impact. He dropped on the floor, though there was no heavy mass on his body, no crater was formed, but a small dust was kicked.

''No, Swellow!''

''Swell….''

''I know you can do it, Use Reversal!''

''Swe…lll….'' The Hoenn first bird winced, lowly squawking to rise himself. But the pain was too much to bear than to channel in his body. His talon tried to scrape the floor, but that was only burning whatever energy he had left. The poor thing couldn't even turn his head around for an apologetic glance. There was no questioning it – Swellow was done. He crowed, weakly before slipping into unconsciousness.

''Swellow is unable to battle! Honchkrow wins!'

The jumbotron updated itself once again, the input being the data the camera fed.

Sighing in disbelief, Ash smiled sadly, recalling Swellow in his capsule. ''Thanks for your help. You tried your best. I am proud of you.''

This confused Misty. ''Oh man, Swellow seemed so powerful a few minutes ago.''

"It must be from all the damage it took earlier," Brock assumed. "Remember, Brave Bird damages the user as well as the target. Sky Attack doesn't have a drawback like that… With everything that's gone on in this battle, as long as it's been dragged out, Swellow's probably had reached its limit."

''It did look a tad one-sided.''

Whatever shock Ash felt was fleeting, swiftly replaced with a quiet rage at ferocity of the Elite's attack. He knew the League challenge would be no joke; the Elite were powerful trainers. But to see his own Pokémon take such a vicious attack left him shaking. The sensation of Lucario's Pokéball trembling at his hip snapped him from his daze, and with Swellow now tucked safely back next to her teammates, Ash skipped over the most active ball on his belt in favor of the most familiar. They wouldn't be intimidated by Karen's show of power.

The trainer from Pallet Town glanced at the crow, and then at his trainer. He had to choose his next Pokémon fast, since Honchkrow had conveniently used Roost to replenish some energy just at the end of the round, and the effect would carry on during the pause. Technically not against the rules, but it still would make things a bit difficult. Fortunately, he had someone in mind to confront him.

Rearing his leg up, Ash sent the Poké Ball flying, calling on his third choice, ''Lycanroc!'' His partner's name ripped from his throat, a fiery stare locked onto the Elite standing across from him. "Show them what we can do!"

"Aroooo!" the wolf howled as he appeared on the battlefield. His image appeared on the screen right below Swellow. Karen seemed to grin a little, like the battle had just taken an interesting turn.

''raw!'' Lycanroc growled, pawing at the ground with ferocity.

''Oh jolly, looking at Lycanroc's stats, you can only come to one conclusion: never bet against it! Those fangs serve only one purpose: Tear an opponent apart!''

''Hey, I remember that Pokemon,'' Brock squinted and grinned, ''It's his Lycanroc!''

''Yeah, I remember it too!''

''You guys have seen it before?'' May twisted her lips in confusion, obviously never seen it before.

''Yeah, when he and his friends had a little trip to Kanto while he was in Alola,'' Misty sighed, happy at the memories, ''but then our dear friends Team Rocket showed up. You'll be amazed at the strength Lycanroc harnesses.''

May pulled out her Pokedex, and just like always, there was no data found on Lycanroc.

''Grrrrr….where's Rotom when you need it!'' she scowled.

''I'm right here!'' the device hovered above them.

''Where were you?!''

''zzz…I had gone to buy some popcorn…but there wasn't any…'' it turned towards the field.

''And that would be the only problem?'' Misty deadpanned.

''Wanna catch me up?''

''Yeah, give us something on Lycanroc.'' May requested.

May was even more surprised when the Dex scanned him, and the image appearing didn't match what her boyfriend had just brought out. In fact, there were two, very similar, a quadruped canine, with a calm demeanor, blue eyes and light brown fur, and a bipedal with red eyes and fur, with a more feral expression and a large mane sprouting from behind its head.

"Lycanroc, the wolf Pokémon, Rock-type native to the Alola region. The pre-evolved form of this Pokémon, Rockruff, adopts a different form depending on whether it evolves during day or nighttime, turning into the forms known as Midday Lycanroc and Midnight Lycanroc. However, there is one unique documented case of an evolution occurring at sunset during a green flash, bringing forth a specimen known as Dusk Lycanroc."

With the last line of the entry, the form in question appeared on-screen. It combined some traits of the other two: its form was overall almost identical to the Midday Lycanroc by being quadruped, except for the orange fur and green eyes, but it had the same mane sprouting out of the back of its head as the Midnight Lycanroc.

"Unique documented case… are you telling me this is that unique Lycanroc?" asked May.

"Not to brag about it, but yeah. And I was there when it happened," RotomDex replied with a smiley. ''Now…on a personal note, when are you and I gonna get some alone time together?''

Karen grinned as well. He knew Ash had something special as a trainer, but him possessing the only known specimen of a certain Pokémon variant definitely was something else.

''MAY THE BATTLE BEGIN!''

''Lycanroc, Accelerock!''

The temperamental wolf obeyed, jerking side to side with an angry growl. Even the winds howled as Lycanroc darted, barely seen in his glowing light.

''Night Slash!'' Karen threw her hand forward.

Honchkrow was barely preparing its attack when Lycanroc shot forward and hit it hard, before landing on the other side. Had it not healed its wounds after battling Swellow, that hit could have taken it out. Furthermore, Lycanroc was a Rock-type, and those were usually strong and resilient, but also heavy and slow. This wolf however, had moved with great speed, very unusual for his type.

"Shadow Ball!" Karen called.

"Krow!" The crow opened his beak to charge a spectral energy sphere, firing it at Lycanroc.

''Thunder Fang!''

''AROOOOOO!''

The pokemon's wide maw parted and fangs crackled, waiting eagerly for the attack to fall into his trap. And his trap, not surprisingly, did shut when the energized sphere neared his jaw. Strong sizzling teeth and muscle crashed down upon Shadow Ball, all but neutralizing the ghostly sphere. Sprinkles and sparks sprayed from his closed mouth, leaving the canine unscathed.

Now, use Crush Claw!" Ash shouted.

The wolf raised his claws and it became coated in a bright golden energy. Running forward to build momentum, he jumped at Honchkrow to strike him. Karen knew it was no use to dodge, but at least, now she had an ace to use on her favor.

"Foul Play!" she grit.

Right before receiving the strikes, for a millisecond, Honchkrow's eyes glowed, and then a ghost image of Lycanroc appeared in front of it for an instant. Its talons grabbed Lycanroc's crest, and twirled him for a somersaulting slam towards the ground.

Lycanroc was knocked backwards, and after skidding a couple times, he landed on his feet, getting a hold with his claws to avoid getting further. Karen smiled in satisfaction; that had been a hard blow.

"Lycanroc, you alright?" asked Ash.

"Grrrr… aroooo!" The wolf stood upright again, as if that strike had been nothing to him.

"Shadow Ball, over and over!"

Like the failed attempt before, Honchkrow bombarded Lycanroc firing the spectral spheres, forcing him to jump from one side to another to try and dodge, while the crow remained out of his reach, only descending long enough to get in attacking range to fire a shot. Karen was being smart: Lycanroc was a good fighter on the ground, but he seemed to have difficulties against an airborne foe with long ranged attacks, even if he could resist them.

"We need to take Honchkrow down first," Ash told himself. "Lycanroc, Stone Edge!''

''Larrroooooo!'' The canine howled so powerfully, sounds resonated in the battle room. The wolf raised his tail, which began glowing, and slammed his feet on the ground. Around him, rock pillars jutted out from the ground, the line of stones heading for Honchkrow. The bird veered from side to side to dodge them, but it eventually got too close and one of them hit it on the wing, throwing it off-balance. The next one arrived without any interval, impaling Honchkrow right in the chest, tossing it upwards.

''Lycanroc is coming off too strong! This looks like the end for Honchkrow!''

"Accelerock!" Ash shouted.

"¡Arooo!"

Lycanroc shot forward to hit Honchkrow before it recovered (avoiding a single second for them to use Roost), trying to bring it down. He almost got the bird, but the flash on the crow's eyes, and the ghostly appearance once again gave away what the intended. After taking the blow, Honchkrow flew back and doing a 270° loop, flew from above to strike him on the back.

Even if the attack wasn't super effective by itself, crashing against the ground helped in compensating for that. Next, the crow flew up again, and following Karen's command, it kept bombarding Lycanroc with Shadow Balls, remaining at a safe distance out of most of its attacks' reach, and flying higher than before.

"Drat…" Ash clenched his fist.

How could he get closer to deliver a strike when his opponent managed to stay out of range? Lycanroc could jump high, but not that high, not enough to reach Honchkrow… unless…

"That's it… Lycanroc, use Stone Edge to get to Honchkrow!" Ash ordered.

Stone Edge was an attack that could manifest in two forms: either it created sharp stones orbiting around the user, or summoned large stone pillars from the ground. The latter version wasn't very handy against airborne opponents, but there was another use to it. Specifically, using them to create a stairway to climb up and gain more altitude.

The line of stones erupted, enough for Lycanroc to mount them. The pillars became strong columns, double their size and you could find dents in the ceiling. The Wolf Pokemon leaped and bounded each incoming pillar, ready to close the distance between him and Honchkrow.

Lycanroc climbed on them hopping and just as he reached the highest, he managed to get at Honchkrow's level.

"Shadow Ball!" Karen called. Honchkrow began charging up the attack to fire the pantom ball at point blank range, but that wouldn't work at all.

"Accelerock!"

"Foul Play!"

From what Ash managed to hear, it was more of a last ditch effort to prevent Lycanroc from going out unscathed. Having used that attack previously, and knowing how to do it, he reproduced it before Lycanroc executed his own, and they both clashed against each other. Honchkrow repeated the same, clutching Lycanroc in its grasp, spinning and plummeting him on the floor.

''Use the Stone Edge and finish this with Counter!''

The canine mirrored his master's grin, springing his limbs upon the stone pillar and bounded once again for Honchkrow. The bird's eyes bulged, as a glowing red claw swiped across its face. Lycanroc won out in physical strength and after two seconds he overpowered him completely. Lycanroc landed with a boom, smothering Honchkrow with his weight. Dust spewed into the air, but there was no doubt of the result even as it took a moment for the dirt to clear and reveal the two Pokémon. Lying flat on the floor floor, wings spread wide, was one fainted Honchkrow.

The referee blew his whistle and raised the flag pointing to Ash's side, ''Honchkrow is unable to battle, Lycanroc wins!''

"AROOOOOOO!" the wolf howled in triumph at his fallen opponent, overjoyed that it succeeded in pulling off what seemed like a milestone for Ash. Pikachu called out to it in its congratulatory way.

''And Ash has pulled off another one! That's another thrilling of the battle in the books!''

Ash fell back, slumping against the railings of the elevator. His confidence was bolstered tenfold. As Honchkrow's light faded into the lights of the recall beam, the scoreboard grayed out the Big Boss Pokemon.

Turning her head up to gaze at Ash, her brow twitched. "Count yourself lucky that I cannot switch Pokemon, else you would have been a goner.''

"But I can..." Ash called out, pumping a fist for his hardy pokemon. "So, let's keep going!"

Two down, and three to go.

And that's all for chapter 63. This is, unquestionably the longest I wrote, because I promised Karen wasn't gonna be easy, so Ash is gonna be in a tough spot for a while. Four from his party has been revealed, and one last is a mystery. Hint: a Pokemon from his original series party.

Do you guys watch Pokemon Journeys? I mean you guys too can't wait for the subtitles, right? You straight watch it on Youtube, don't you? Have you tried wearing 3D glasses? If not, then you should, otherwise YOU WONT BE ABLE TO SEE THAT HUGE KNIFE IMPALED IN ASH'S BACK. Even Chloe agrees, him leaving his Pokemon behind isn't gonna be good.

Take the last episode for example, a Turtle race. Bringing back Squirtle or Torterra or even Torkoal could have been a good idea, but NO! This series is Goh centered! This everything is the answer to the writers getting drunk and saying 'Let's do something hilariously stupid'. I mean taken the fact that Ash was in the series past 20 years, and Goh just one, doesn't imply he should get tons of Pokemon, and a Legendary no less. He isn't the future or face of the sow. His dreams are ridiculous! I would very much be thrilled if at the end of the year, Prof Cerise flashes him a bill to recover all he spent on Goh.

It is evident that he will catch Grookey now. Past eight episodes starting from 51, two were fillers, two were focused on Chloe, two were solely focused on Goh and Sobble and Ash had screentime for two, which he shared with Goh. We were expecting a Farfetched evolution but no, Just Detect for now! Let's evolve Goh's Scyther, and hardly ever show it again.

I m sure investors will pull back their money XD

Q&A

Why Ash battles all Elite Four with five Pokemon? Isn't it six for the challenger?

Ash is a highly skilled trainer with years of experience and at a Champion level. Him using six against five of Elite simply isn't something I can digest.

You have been using Pokemon mostly from the first three generations? Are we going to see the same for other four?

Definitely! I plan on using them for Sinnoh and Kalos. I agree, that I haven't give much exposure to Gliscor, Seismitoad, Talonflame, etc. But I do have plans for them. Pokemon like Heracross, Swellow, Venusaur, Gengar and many more, won't be starring henceforth. Thank You.

Well, that's it for now. See you next time – I have to make the second installment even harder! So please expect some delay.
