Jay woke up to an empty bed, Erin had left their bed half way through the night and taken Lily out to the living room to sleep with her, she was so unsettled and Erin knew she'd be having the day off so Jay needed as much sleep as possible.
She was actually quite surprised that Jay didn't wake up that much, he only woke when she left but then fell straight back to sleep. Her head rose when she saw him approaching her on the lounge. Lily was curled up on her chest sleeping, "Hey Mumma, how you doing?" He said crouching down in-front of her.
"Tired, but it's okay this one was only comfy on my chest so I've been here for the last two hours. Helped me catch up on Breaking Bad."
"Don't tell me you watched it without me!" Jay joked.
"My eyes were shut half the time I just needed something on in the background."
"Do you want me to take her for a minute?"
"No it's fine, I might go see how she will do in her bed. You going for a run?" Erin said as Zeus's ears pricked up beside her.
"Yeah I might, then I better head in early. Still not giving me any clues as to what Hank is talking to me about?" Jay questioned.
Erin smiled and shook her head as she stood up, hoping not to stir Lily to much, "Nope."
"Ah fine. Come on boy let's go for a run."
Jay walked up to the bullpen, dropped his jacket on his desk then approached Hanks door giving it a light knock before entering, "Morning sarge."
"Halstead," Hank nodded towards the seat infront of his desk, "Do you have any idea why I wanted to speak to you this morning?"
"No. Erin didn't say anything either if that's what your asking."
"Not it wasn't, I'm actually quite surprised she didn't say anything."
"Hank can you just get straight to the point." Jay sighed.
"If you haven't noticed, Antonio has been going through some things. He's moving to be with his sister."
"Okay..." Jay said confused.
"For a while now I have been thinking about who I would want to take over the unit..."
"Sarge are you..."
Hank stopped Jay before he could continue, "They aren't forcing me into retirement anytime soon, I imagine it won't happen for another couple years but that still hasn't stopped me from thinking about who I would like to take over this unit. Who I think is right for the job. I think that person is you Jay. I have for a while now."
Jay bent forward, rubbing his hands through his hair, "Wow sarge, I don't know what to say."
"The reason I'm bringing it up now is because I want you to be prepared. I think regardless whether you end up taking charge of this unit I still think you should be taking the sergeants exam."
"Hank, I don't know what to say."
"I know I have always been hard on you and I know we don't always see eye to eye but I know if you took charge you'd do it the right way. Your a great cop Jay, maybe an even better one then myself."
Jay blew out a breath, "Thanks Hank, I uh really appreciate it."
"Of course it's something you need to think about. Taking the exam will be tough, so talk it over with Erin."
"Yeah of course. This is a lot, especially with the new baby."
Hank smiled, "How far along is she now? She doesn't talk about it much."
"Fourteen weeks."
A lightbulb went off in Hanks head, "Ah. How are you?"
"Hanging on."
"Now I've just put this on your shoulders too."
"Lucky I have big shoulders." Jay chuckled.
"You know you've got me by your side for all of this yeah? I'm here for your family and I'm here if you decide to go through with the sergeants exam. Just remember that."
"And to think you use to hate me."
Hank shrugged, "Yeah I can tolerate you now."
"Aw only tolerate me? Dam I thought you may have cared a little more then that."
"I look at you as my son Jay. Your part of my family now, that's why I wouldn't recommend anyone else to do this but you."
Jay smiled, he couldn't have been more surprised by Hank. Hank was a man of very few words, so this meant everything. Now he just had to figure out what he wanted to do for his future and his family's.
Jay finished up the day and bought Chinese home, Lily was thankfully a little more settled but the fridge was empty and Erin didn't want to leave the house while Lily wasn't one hundred percent.
Jay opened the door and was greeted by Zeus, "Hey boy."
He continued walking to the kitchen, placing the takeout on the counter as he watched Erin sway side by side, back facing him with Lily asleep in her arms. He couldn't help but smile, she was the most amazing wife and mother and he was forever grateful.
She turned around and smiled, "Here you take her and take her up to bed? I will put your badge and gun away."
"Okay." Jay said leaving his badge and gun on the bench as he took Lily into his own arms. Walking her up to put her into her bed.
Lily didn't fuss once she was in her bed, thankfully because Jay knew how much Erin needed a minute to herself and food. He could tell by the way she was quiet that she hadn't eaten all day.
He walked back down to the kitchen and waited for Erin to serve up dinner before they made their way to the dining table, "I kinda love when you spend the day at home with her, I love getting cute photos of my girls."
"Well she's much better so I will be taking her to daycare tomorrow. I think keeping her home while she wasn't as sick prevented her from getting really sick. We got lucky."
Jay smiled, "Your amazing you know that."
Erin blushed, "Yeah I know."
Jay picked at his food a little more before speaking again, "So the sergeants exam."
Erin moved her eyes to meet Jays, "It's big."
"Massive." He agreed.
"Your the right guy for the job Jay, I know it's a lot to take on but I don't even think you should be questioning it."
"What about us? The new baby? This family?"
"We will work it out, we always do."
"I don't want to be the dad that barely gets to tuck his kids into bed at night, or doesn't get to see them score a goal at their game on Saturday." He said worried.
"Babe your getting a-bit ahead of yourself." She chuckled.
He shrugged, "Hank isn't going to retire for atleast two to three years. The only reason he wants me to prepare now is so I can get use to the reigns while he's around..."
"Which you pretty much already know how..." Erin added.
"That means Lily will be five or six by then. I don't want to miss out on anything. She will be starting school, maybe starting out in little league." He smiled imagining it.
Erin frowned, she knew she was thinking too much by it but it didn't stop her from saying anything, "What about this baby?"
"Huh?" Jay said confused.
"Well you said Lily will be five or six. That means this baby will be around two. But you didn't mention that, are you worried?"
"Babe, I didn't even think."
"Your more worried then you let on."
"Of course I'm worried Er. But that doesn't mean I don't mean it when I say I think everything's going to be fine, because I did believe that."
"I think it's a boy again."
Jay smiled, "Really?" She nodded, a slight tear falling down her face, he wiped it away gently, "I know how hard it is for you to talk about it and enjoy this pregnancy, it's hard for me too."
"I just don't want you to hate me if..."
"Babe I could never hate you. Never."
"I'm starting to show."
Jays eyes lit up, yesterday she hadn't popped but he knew how sudden it could happen, "Really?"
She nodded and stood up from the table, lifting her shirt up to reveal the tiny little bump she had, the normal person would have just thought she was the slightest bit bloated, "It's just a lot you know. We got so excited last time and then we lost him. It's hard to forget all that."
"I know. But it doesn't prevent me from being excited about this baby." Jay said circling his fingers on her belly.
"Your a great dad."
Jay smiled, "I hope I do them proud."
"You will. You already do. Lily's eyes light up every time you come into the room, your her hero. That won't change if you take the sergeants exam and eventually take over intelligence. I will be here every step of the way and trust me I won't let you slip away from being the great father you are, even though I don't think that could ever happen."
"Hank said I was a great cop, maybe an even better one then he is today."
"You really do amaze him Jay, you don't give yourself enough credit."
"I have you to thank for that. I do believe I was a good detective before I got into intelligence but being by your side everyday made me an even better one. Your just as amazing Er and I wouldn't pick anyone else to have by my side throughout all this."
"Well I'm here for it all, so is the team and Hank. Lean on us."
"Thankyou." Jay smiled leaning into to kiss her.
Just as their lips were about to touch, there were faint cry's coming from the baby monitor that was sitting on the kitchen bench, they fell forward and rested on each other's foreheads, Erin sighed, "Like clockwork I swear."
Jay chuckled, "I got her."
