Hello everyone! Welcome to chapter 90 of Sparks Ignite! We're only 10 chapters away from 100 chapters! How crazy is that! I'm sorry about another delay. I recently had some big life changes happen that I had to take care of! But I'm hoping to get some more chapters out soon! As always, I do not own avatar or its characters but the story is my own. Onto the story!
Fate and Destiny are a funny thing. They are so permanent, but yet can be changed by the smallest thing. It can cause the moon and the sun to collide. Or the most opposite Sparks to Ignite.
Chapter 90: The Fire Lilies
They planned to leave first thing in the morning, before the sun rose, and morning came faster than they would have liked. They met in the front hallway, adorned in black cloaks, not wanting to be followed.
They all came with different looks on their faces.
Zuko came with a grave look across his features. Himself and Iroh were the only ones who knew what they were walking into, which only made the look on his face more worrying to the others.
Iroh's face mirrored Zuko's, but with a glimpse of hope hidden in his eyes that was very fitting.
Katara only watched from the sideline, gauging the other's reactions and being ready to jump in at the slightest quiver of hesitation. She wanted to keep moving forward, she thought it was best, but she wouldn't hesitate to turn back around if someone asked.
Ursa was the most determined of all of them. Although worry was present in her features, she made it plain how determined she was. Katara couldn't turn her around even if she dragged her by the ankles.
"Are we still waiting for one more?" Iroh asked, easily noticing Ikem not present. Ursa cleared her throat, "He thought it best to sit out… I will keep him updated once we return"
"Probably best" Zuko stated, before anyone else could get a word in edgewise, "Let's get moving… I would like to be inside before sunrise"
He was the first one to start moving, the guards following behind him. Katara followed behind the guards but pushed past them to be at his side. She grabbed his hand and squeezed.
She would've thought that after all of her training, she would know how to be Fire Lady right now. But in reality, she had absolutely no idea. But she did know one rule, luckily it was the most important one: always be his by his side, in good times and bad.
Ursa and Iroh shared a look, before they followed behind swiftly.
It wasn't a long walk, Zuko had wanted his sister close by once the war ended, hoping just one day, she would wake up.
He tried to make the walk pleasant, making the trail covered in florals and greenery. But that didn't stop the walk from being filled with dread, as it always was.
They began to walk up to the marble tower. It was a few stories high and was made completely out of marble, making it white all the way to the top. There were a few windows scattered throughout, and at each window, stood a guard at attention, ready for the slightest attack.
But what was most peculiar was what was beyond the tower.
"Fire Lilies…" Ursa whispered. Just beyond the tower was a sea of red fire lilies. The flowers shone brightly as the rising sun reflected onto them. Their bright yellow centers shining like little balls of fire.
"They're her favorite…"
A young scarless Zuko ran through the palace, his sister tight on his heels. He felt the burn of the fireballs on his ankles as she sent them towards him, only making him run faster.
He heard her cackle but he kept running, at risk of being burnt to a crisp.
Zuko barely saw his mother as he sped past her. Ursa felt the wind as her two kids ran past her. She saw Azula send a fireball at her son's feet and went to scold her. But her husband stood at her side.
"Leave them be Ursa… We have more important things to attend to" Ozai told her, "After all, maybe she could teach him a thing or two" he laughed as he practically dragged his wife away.
Zuko kept running till he was out of the palace, hoping to lose her once he got to the woods.
He reached the fire lily field and kept running, but suddenly her cackles stopped. He turned to see what distracted and saw her looking amongst the flowers.
She delicately picked one and brought it to her nose.
It was the most human he had ever seen her.
"Fire Lilies?" he asked her.
Azula looked at the flower and shrugged, "They're my favorite… They're one of the very few things that's beautiful in this world…"
Zuko shrugged, "I think you're beautiful… for my sister and all…"
Azula looked at him, and for a moment, he thought he saw her smile.
"That's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard!"
It didn't take him long to start running again.
He didn't dwell on the memory long. It didn't do to dwell on the past and forget what was going on now, at least that was what he told himself.
He nodded towards the guards as they moved the marble door to the side. They knew the drill, let him through and don't ask questions. It didn't matter what they heard while he was inside, it stayed secret, or their job and their lives were in the gutter.
They made their way up the marble staircase that winded up for what felt like centuries. But it led to a white room, where a woman was folding some laundry on a bed. She looked up when the footsteps approached.
She sighed when she saw the group, "I was wondering when you all would come by…" she told them, bowing. But Zuko held up his hand, "You know that's not necessary Lilith."
The older woman shrugged, "Maybe not for the measly Fire Lord, but it's not every day you have a former and a future Fire Lady in your midst."
The two women smiled and offered a small nod in thanks. Lilith, or so the woman was called, spoke, "She's in her chair" she told them, "Today is a good day… so we shall see"
Zuko took a deep breath, "I should go in first…"
He walked through the room and through a small archway. The archway opened up to a slightly larger room, at least it seemed that way because the entire far wall was covered with windows. The room was mostly empty except for a few chairs and one rocking chair in the middle. When they entered, they saw her back and her long black hair draped over the back of the chair. She was wearing a long white night gown that went past her knees.
She didn't look up when they came in. She simply sat, merely rocking back and forth slowly, as if she was sleeping.
There was a small table next to the rocking chair. On the end was a small hairbrush, one Ursa recognized from the girl's childhood. Lilith must have brushed through the girl's hair, which explained its sleekness. Next to that, was a set of scrolls. Only one was rolled open, and it showed a drawn picture from Azula's childhood. It was Mai, Tylee and herself, all standing together giggling, probably at the misfortune of Zuko if she had to guess.
"I was hoping they would make her fight her way out… But nothing…" Zuko whispered quietly.
Ursa let out a breath, taking a few steps forward. But Zuko grabbed her arm, "Just a moment… let me…"
Zuko moved around the rocking chair and knelt down in front of her, "Azula… Zuko here…" he started, clearly fumbling on his words, "I have some people here for you…"
Azula didn't look to him, she kept looking out the window out to the field of fire lilies.
"I found Mom…"
It was the first time Azula looked at him or showed any sign of life and understanding.
Ursa stepped forward and walked into her field of vision. Her eyes welled up with tears at the sight of her daughter.
Azula looked at her, her eyes holes into her brain. They didn't scan the sight of her mother, but simply stared daggers into her skull.
And that is when the screams started.
Dun DUN DUUUNNNNNNN! What is going on with Azula?! Keep on reading! Until next time!
