Epilog

Fall 1910

Alex Butler had come to visit a man who had a new invention. He was walking into a tenement building in Boston. Mr. Butler was a very rich man. He had inherited a sizable amount from his father upon his father's death but he had managed to almost double that amount. He was an honest man but he was also a shrewd businessman just like his father. Although he was pretty sure his father had not always been completely honest.

Alex loved his son and loved spending time with him. His son who was with him now. He remembered all the time he had spent with his father. It had always made him feel so special. He had named his only child after his father but had given him his wife's maiden name as his middle name. His ten-year-old son was named Rhett Rogers Butler.

Alex's father had always made time for him and his siblings and even his cousin. His mother had loved him and his siblings probably as much as his Papa she just hadn't showed it as much. Except in those rare moments when she would do something that would leave one speechless like her giving him that huge diamond for Clara. Alex smiled. She had given it to him like it was nothing but he knew the diamond had been special to her. She had given it to him because he had said it was the perfect diamond for Clara. She had given it to him because she had loved him so much and wanted him to be happy.

His Aunt Melly had loved them all so much also. She had loved her children that she had taught at the Asylum almost as much as she had loved them. Everyone had always loved his Aunt Melly. He was here visiting Mr. O'Hara because of his Aunt Melly. She had always said, "The best feeling in the world is helping someone who can never pay you back." Alex agreed with her. It was a wonderful feeling.

They walked up the stairs to an apartment on the third floor. The man that greeted them was obviously Irish from his looks to his name. His name was Patrick O'Hara. The man had the bluest eyes he had ever seen except in the mirror. Alex had inherited his eye color from his grandfather who was also an Irish man. His son's eyes were a dark brown like his wife's eyes.

As they stood in the parlor, they heard a baby loudly crying. The cries were heart breaking. His son as if in a daze left the parlor and walked to the room where the baby was crying. His son turned toward the baby in the crib. The men had followed the boy into the family parlor. Everyone was so stunned by the boy's actions that no one stopped him.

He reached in the crib and pick the two-and-a-half-year-old baby up. Rhett smiled and said, "I would recognize those green eyes anywhere." The baby stopped crying immediately. With her hand she reached up and pulled on his upper lip. Just like that the boy had all his previous memories and he assumed the baby did also. The boy said, "It is the first time you have seen me without my mustache. Don't worry I will grow it back as soon as I can. I have found you again my Scarlett. We are back together again." Rhett had not even known he had been looking for a girl named Scarlett but when he found her, he knew they were soul mates. By Scarlett's reaction she had known that they were soul mates also.

Everyone had heard what he said and it didn't make sense. What really didn't make sense was the boy calling the baby by her name. Scarlett smiled, let go of his upper lip and leaned into him. Rhett hugged her to him and smiled his cocky smile.

Spring 1918

There was an eighteen-year-old young man visiting a ten-year-old little girl. If he hadn't been doing it every three to four months for the last nine years it might have appeared strange. Well, it still appeared strange but the boy obviously loved the girl. The boy had been very respectful of the girl. He had never touched her since their first meeting. The girl obviously loved the boy. There was never any doubt that they were meant to be together.

Alex Butler had invested in Patrick O'Hara's invention and it was a great success. Alex like his father had the Midas touch. Everything he invested in made money. The O'Haras were definitely not living in a tenement anymore. They were living in a very nice home in Boston. Their home was nothing like the apartment they had lived in when Scarlett had been born.

The couple were sitting in the front parlor and Scarlett's mother was watching them from across the room. Scarlett was her only child. They had named her after Patrick's Great Grandmother. She and Patrick had thought they couldn't have children until she had gotten pregnant with her daughter. She knew what her husband said that there was something fey about the boy and the girl but she still thought it was not quite right. If she hadn't been Irish also, she would not have understood what her husband meant about Scarlett and the boy being a fey couple. She did agree with Patrick that there was something otherworldly about them.

The couple spoke softly so only the two of them could really hear the conversation.

"Your mustache is coming in nicely."

"It is about time. The first time I was shaving every day by sixteen."

"I like this one better. You kept that other one too thin."

They smiled at each other.

"My father lectured me on keeping myself pure for the woman I loved. That relations were only to be between a man and a woman in love."

"How did that make you feel?"

"Proud. We did a good job in raising him. Glad that I had a father I could be proud of."

"We did and you do. Did you lecture Alex on the same subject?"

"Yes, I did. Because that is the way it should be." Rhett smiled sweetly at her then he continued, "I was able to convince my father to not send me to West Point. He had thought all the discipline would have been good for me." Rhett said and snorted.

Scarlett laughed, "Does he know you at all?"

Rhett had smiled and said, "Apparently not."

They both laughed.

"I asked your father if I could marry you as soon as you turned twelve."

"It would have been nice if you had asked me first."

Rhett gave her his most winning smile and said, "I knew you would say yes."

"I still would have liked to be asked. Are you going to be high handed in this lifetime also?"

"Yes. It is part of my charm."

Scarlett hmphed and said, "What did he say?"

Rhett laughed and said, "He looked at me strangely and said that we can be engaged but we can't wed until you are at least sixteen."

Scarlett looked at him questioningly.

Rhett smiled kindly and said, "He said he doesn't want you to get pregnant before you are sixteen. I think he really meant he doesn't want us to have relations before you turn sixteen. I don't either. I certainly don't want to mess anything up," then he whispered, "down there."

"Nor do I." They both laughed.

"It will be hard to wait that long. I am in my prime."

"You are always in your prime," Scarlett said and gave him a sensuous look that was at odds with her overall appearance. "Why did you go ahead and ask him?"

"I want to get you married to me as soon as possible. You do have the habit of marrying the wrong men."

"I did that one time and I was desperate because you had let me down."

Rhett ignored the jab and said, "What about Charles Hamilton?"

"I wouldn't marry anyone but you now. That would just be awkward. Me being married to someone else but being in love with you. We have already done that sort of. I want a big wedding. The wedding I never got the first time."

"You can have whatever you want."

"You have to behave yourself for the next six years."

"I will. I know. Stay out of whore houses."

Scarlett whispered, "No, stay out of whores."

Rhett laughed. "My father said I could go to MIT instead of West Point. I am here in Boston to interview for acceptance which is a mere formality. I scored one point more than Alex did when he took the exam."

"Did you rub it in?"

"Do you not know me at all?"

They both laughed. She had known Rhett would never be able to resist that sort of thing.

"So, I will see you tomorrow."

"Yes, my love, and every day thereafter."

Scarlett smiled at Rhett and Rhett felt wonderful.

"Tell me how everyone is doing. Is your Aunt Eugenia going on anymore marches?"

"Yes, she finally talked Aunt Ella into going on one with her."

"She did?"

"Yes, but Uncle Jacob wouldn't let her go. I think Aunt Ella was relieved she had an excuse for not going."

"It is bad enough she is dragging her daughter to those marches but she should leave her sister alone."

"You might feel differently when you get older."

Rhett laughed at the look of horror on Scarlett's face.

It was always weird to talk about their children and their grandchildren but refer to them as Rhett's aunts, uncles and cousins.

They talked some more. They didn't know what their future would be in this life. They just knew they were together and that would always be enough.
