Conversations on a Balcony

100

A/N: Wow. 100, eh? What a ride!

"Hey…" Supergirl touched down gently on the private balcony of Lena Luthor's office at LCorp. Lena was sitting, dark hair lifting slightly in the breeze, on a comfortable couch as she gazed out over the city lights. A glass of wine sat on a small table next to her right hand. "You ok? You look… pensive?"

"And you look beautiful, Supergirl," the older woman replied softly. "If a little tired."

Kara sighed and nodded. "I'm a week away from my due date. I'd be lying if I said I'm not exhausted." She chuckled then. "In fact, I was in labor with Abby at this point in my pregnancy with her."

Lena narrowed her eyes playfully. "Don't you even think about it!"

The Kryptonian laughed and shook her head. "Nah, I haven't had even a twinge from this one yet." She tilted her head. "And stop deflecting. What's going on with you, Lena? I know you've been ducking my calls."

The older woman sighed and shook her head. "I haven't been ducking them, I've just been genuinely busy but, when I think about returning them, something… stops me."

Kara's face fell and she looked down at her feet. Then she took a seat next to the LCorp CEO. "What's stopping you? Is it something I said or did?"

"Oh, Kara…" Lena chuckled affectionately. "You don't have to take responsibility for everything. This is nothing you've done."

"It's not you, it's me," Kara teased with a little chortle and Lena smiled again.

"Actually," she shrugged. "Honestly, it IS kind of like that… but… it's because you're pregnant, Kara, and it's hard for me to be around you."

The hero nodded, trying to understand. "Why, Lee?" she asked gently.

The CEO took a deep breath and looked away. "You're my best friend, Kara, and I should have told you this sooner… I… have a condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser… MRKH Syndrome. I was born with no uterus and a short vaginal canal… so I can't have children."

Lena," Kara breathed, bottom lip quivering.

"Don't…" the CEO chuckled. "Don't feel sorry for me, Kara. I've lived with this all my life. I've had the surgeries which allow me to have a healthy sex life. I'm fine, really."

The hero lifted an eyebrow.

"Well… mostly," Lena went on with a little chuckle. As I've gotten older and seen my friends having children… Sam… you… and now Alex and Kelly are trying artificial insemination… I guess, it's just hitting home a little harder."

Kara nodded. "Would this be the right time to give you a hug?" she asked softly.

Lena nodded and let herself be pulled into blue-clad arms. She sighed softly and let herself sink into the hero's embrace. "May I?" she whispered, letting her hand hover slightly.

"Of course," Kara replied, and relaxed a little more as Lena's hand slowly caressed her baby bump. "Oh shit…" she said then, stiffening slightly.

"What?" Lena asked, pulling her hand back.

"Well… that was a contraction," the Kryptonian cackled. "That's your fault."

"I told you not to even think about it!" the CEO exclaimed, punching her friend very lightly in the shoulder. "Jesus, Kara." But she had a huge grin on her face.

With a matching grin of her own, Supergirl pulled her phone out of her boot. "Hey Siri, call Wifey."

"Calling Wifey."

Kara waited a moment and then Cat picked up. She sounded slightly groggy, and the hero suspected she'd fallen asleep on the couch again. "Hi, Babe. Where are you?"

"I'm at LCorp with Lena. Um… Cat-El… I'm… we're… early again."

There was silence for a moment and then Cat laughed softly. "Impatient half-Kryptonians!"

"Well, maybe half-Kryptonians only gestate for thirty-nine weeks instead of forty?" Kara suggested.

Lena nodded, pursing her lips.

Cat chuckled. "Good point. Alright, Sweetheart. I'll meet you at the DEO."

"Actually," Kara replied. "I'm going to swing by home first. I want to hug Abby and tell her what's happening."

"Ok, Babe. See you soon. I love you."

"Love you too, Cat-El."

And after one more long hug with Lena, Kara headed back to the penthouse.
