Chapter 104 [Smallville Airport—Thursday Afternoon About 3:45 PM]
Peter paced about the terminal's waiting area. Nerves ate at him. His eyes moved back and forth between the seats and window. I wonder how Aunt May will like it here? Will she be all right with how things are going? He still debated about how to tell her about the firing. She won't go for it.
"Peter, it's going to be all right." Jonathan put his hand on his shoulder. "I know these things can be tough."
"I can hope. Aunt May wants me to pursue the science. She'll be glad I won't be doing the photos for the Bugle any more. But I don't know how she'll take the Planet." Peter sighed. "She'll remind me about what Uncle Ben wanted. He was so proud of my interest in science."
"You can still teach. Lex could still get you a job at LexCorp. But here's a question. What is it that you want, Peter? Some people in your situation could be laid up in a hospital bed. They would be sulking and complaining. I don't see you doing that at all." Jonathan observed. "You're getting married. So things aren't working out as they should? Other than David Dubois, I have never seen anyone take what Gwen and you have. You're taking everything in stride. That is being a man. Besides a certain person is helping. If your aunt isn't proud of that, I don't know what to say. My wife and I will talk with her."
"I want her to like it here. We might be in Metropolis. At least she'd have friends." Peter glanced back out the window.
"A world of them, Peter." Lex sauntered over to their side. "Mr. Kent's exactly right. Don't worry about Ms. Travers until Wednesday. You sent her the handout file?"
"I did that on my lunch. She said the same thing. It's like everything is falling into place." Peter mulled over that last idea. "I wish I could do more about our lurking problem but…"
"Don't even think about them this weekend." Lex insisted. "That's the last thing we need. And they would show up out of spite." He shook his head. "Nope."
"And our stalker guy?" Peter ground his teeth. "I'm not happy about him knowing about Gwen and me."
"Peter, keep your eyes open. Remember what you asked about with the panic button? If Arighatto shows up, you hit the button and get Gwen under cover. The Child can deal with him. And he's got help with that creep. There's a warrior woman with a grudge of her own against him too. Just get out of the way. If Arighatto or his demonic other half show up, it'll be their last mistake." Lex saw a glint sparkle just under the clouds. "That's the charter right there."
The airplane in question descended toward the landing strip. Its wheels kissed the asphalt and then settled onto that surface. It slowed as it headed for the terminal.
Lex took out his phone. "Max, we're ready for Rod and you. Bring the vans." He put the phone back in his pocket. "Ready? Guess this is it."
"Guess so." Peter smiled. "Thanks, Lex, Mr. Kent."
"That's what we're here for. We'll be set at the farm and the Talon. Let's meet your aunt and friends." Jonathan rubbed Peter's shoulder.
Just hope for a good visit. We get married. Our friends like it. Aunt May will like everyone. We do the interview. We have our future all set. Spidey can even find some action in Metro. Peter watched the jet's door lower and the stairs unfold to the ground. He saw Mary Jane with her Aunt Anna. Aunt May was next. He saw Robbie waiting for Betty, Glory, Harry Osborn and a muscular orange haired man. Finally he recognized Jean De Wolff. I know she's here as Gwen's friend officially but I wonder what Captain De Wolff would do if she knew Spidey's the groom? He waved to everyone through the window.
"Peter!" Aunt May called back.
"Hi, Pretty Lady!" Peter embraced her. "How was your flight?"
Aunt May smiled. "It went so quickly! I enjoyed talking with everyone."
"Mr. Luthor's pilot really gave us a smooth flight, Peter," Anna reported.
"Glad to hear it, Mrs. Watson. Good to see you both again. Hi, Mary Jane." Lex shook their hands. "I think most of us have met. Do either of you have to use the restroom?"
"We're set. I'm sorry, Sir. We didn't mean to ignore you." Anna put her hand out.
"You didn't, Mrs. Watson. I'm Jonathan Kent. Mrs. Parker and you both are eating with my wife and me tonight at our farm," Jonathan introduced himself.
"You've been really great to them, Mr. Kent. I'm Joe Robertson. Most of my friends call me Robbie. I appreciate that." Robbie shook Jonathan's hand.
"Peter and Gwen have been really helpful themselves since their arrival. We enjoy having them here." Jonathan returned the handshake.
"Lex, thanks for flying us out," Robbie expressed.
"It's my pleasure." Lex shook his hand. "We've got everything set up. Just a minute." He got everyone's attention. "Everybody! We're having your bags brought to the hotel. Sorry I can't put everyone up at the mansion. Normally I would. While you're waiting, there's a coffee shop in town. It's my treat. We can get whatever you'd like. The vans are waiting for us." He turned back to Robbie. "Sorry. You want coffee or to go with Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Watson?"
"I'll go with the group but thank you." Robbie nodded. "I'll catch up with Pete at some point. Thanks for helping with that interview at the Planet."
"My pleasure. Princess Jasmine's at the Talon with Gwen and the others. I'll be right over." Lex motioned toward the van. "Shall we?"
"Tell Gwen I'll see her at dinner, MJ. I'll go with our aunts to the farm. You doing all right?" Peter informed her.
"Oh yeah! You know me, Tiger. I'm groovy!" Mary Jane assured him. She waved to the two older ladies. Then she headed for the waiting van.
"Follow me, Ladies." Jonathan led them toward the parking lot. "See you both at the farm."
