Our Reasons
Amari: Age 24
(Hello! Welcome to the very last chapter. Heads up, it's a long one! Grab your tissues and let's go!)
Hearing a loud knock sound through the space, Katsuki looked up into his apartment before lazily raising to his feet and stomping towards the door. He didn't know who in the hell was brave enough to interrupt him on his day off but the angry blonde man expected it to be important.
Because if it wasn't then he would surely be pissed.
It wasn't everyday that heroes got a day off, and with his sister and him running an entire agency, it was equally hard to step away for a couple hours, never mind an entire day. And now that he finally had it someone had the balls to disturb him? He didn't think so.
Throwing open the door with a sheet amount of force, the man was ready to yell at the stranger when a familiar shade of blonde hair entered his vision, her voice far too peppy and excited for it being so early. "Hey Katsuki! What's up?"
And usually he'd be happy to see his sister but it seemed like he saw her all the damn time now. He wanted a break from her but it seemed he couldn't even get that. "Ugh, what the hell do you want? This better be important…"
The woman only pouted her lips in fake annoyance before pushing past her angry twin into the apartment a second later, lifting herself onto her tip toes and patting his spiky hair twice "Aww don't be all grumpy brother."
Then she lifted up her arms to reveal a singular plastic bag. "Besides, is that anyway to speak to someone that brought you a gift?"
Not fully understanding, Katsuki grumbled before grabbing the bag out of her hands to look inside. There he found two plastic grabbed bowls of spicy ramen, one for her and one for him. "You came all the way over here for ramen?"
Scoffing at his question, Amari quickly grabbed the plastic bag from his hands once more before taking one of the spicy bowls out and displaying it with her hands. "Pfft Not just any ramen! Look, it's the ramen that you used to eat all the time at mom and dad's house! I thought we could have a little lunch date since it's your day off!"
Her offer was sweet, but Katsuki couldn't help but notice something off about her words. She came all the way across town to eat some convenience store ramen with him? Why, what was the purpose?"
It wasn't out of the ordinary for the two to eat together, given that he still regularly attended dinner with Amari and that icy hot bastard but this was the first time it was so out of the blue, without invitation. He wondered why that was.
It was kind of like she was looking for an excuse to see him about something.
Unable to hide his skepticism, the girl happily made her way into the kitchen as Katsuki replied roughly. "And what makes you think I actually want to see you on my day off?"
To anyone else, those words would've hurt, but Amari knew he didn't actually mean them. After being together for so long it was a whole easier to pick up on his real feelings. "Rude. And come on, I know you're lonely over here by yourself like this. But I guess if you don't want me here then I'll just take my ramen and leave…"
In order to prove her point, the girl then purposely picked up the bowl in order to wave it in his face as she moved towards the door, knowing exactly what would trigger him.
And she was right because a second later, Amari felt her brother's hand on her arm, annoyed and defeated. "Ugh you're so frustrating all the damn time! Fine, since you're already here it will be hard to get rid of you anyways, so just stay idiot.."
A triumphant smirk made its way into her face before the girl shrugged her shoulders playfully, making her way back to the kitchen. "Alright, if you say so.."
Katsuki hated that look more than anything, the one that showed him that Amari had won their invisible war this time. Oh, and she was cocky about it too so that made it even worse.
Hearing the water begin to run, Katsuki grumbled before moving back to his spot on the sofa as Amari made their food, his mind going to another topic. "Where's that damn Todoroki?"
The fact that he was willingly asking about the man was something Amari would probably never get used to. The two were always at odds with each other but it seemed that after her coma and then the wedding, things between Bakugo and Todoroki had mellowed out just slightly. She was thankful for it to say the least.
Smiling to herself, the girl began to peel back the cover of the ramen before replying. "Oh, well he's probably with his dad. After Endeavor retired things have been kind of crazy, and since Fuyumi and Natsu don't really want the responsibility of the agency that means that Shoto is going to inherit it I suppose."
Amari couldn't help but stop herself then, recalling how much work her husband had put in to get to where he was now. "I'm proud of him. I really am…"
Although that's when she realized who was in the room before clearing her throat a moment later. "But I gotta say Katsuki, I'm surprised. Who would've thought you would have ever asked about Shoto.."
Immediately, her brother scrunched his face up in disgust before rolling his eyes. "I'm not asking about him. He's your damn husband…"
He clearly was asking about him in some manner, but Amari dropped the conversation at that, pouring the steaming water into the bowls as she felt her heart rate start to speed up.
Well, here goes nothing..
Sucking in an anxious breath, she felt herself beginning to speak, treading around the topic and extreme care, like she was defusing a bomb. "Right so, there was something I wanted to talk to you about actually...now that you bring it up...you know...about Shoto and I…"
Already not liking where this was going, Katsuki found himself turning around to watch his sister small back with unsaid concern. "What the hell does that mean, did that bastard do something to you?! Did he say something to you, I swear to god Amari if he..!"
Seeing that he was already spiraling down a hole of anger, Amari quickly stopped what she was doing before turning around with her hands up. "What? No no no Shoto's been wonderful to me. I'm the happiest I've ever been. Why do you always seem like you're always looking for the right moment to kill him?"
Katsuki eyed his sister with unsaid intent before crossing his arms. "Because I don't care if you are married to that bastard, anyone that has the balls to mess with my sister has a death wish…"
Laughing nervously, Amari felt herself put a hand to her neck before replying. "Aw come on Katsuki, I think you know by now that Shoto wouldn't do any of that. I get you're worried about me but you've seen how he is, how he treats me right. Besides, if he ever did decide to "mess with me" then I would be the one kicking his ass…"
And as much as Katsuki disliked it, he knew that Todoroki treated his sister with the utmost respect, that he was probably the best match for her. But even so, after her past and every shitty thing she had to deal with, the man couldn't help but be protective about her.
He just wanted his sister to finally be happy for once.
Seeing that he had calmed down, the girl saw this as an opportunity to push further. "Anyways, like I said Shoto and I have been together for awhile…"
Amari then turned back towards the ramen to finish the bowl as Katsuki watched her with newfound interest. Why did she seem nervous about this topic? If that bastard hadn't done anything to her then why was she even bringing this up?
Although that's when the girl spoke again, her voice was clearly nervous and small. "Hypothetically speaking, how would you feel about the idea….of Shoto and I…"
Stopping for a moment, Amari then closed her eyes before forcing out.
"...Starting a family?"
"If that bastard touches you, he's dead."
Her brother's reply was immediate, plain laced seriousness in his voice at every word.
His words were so surprising that Amari felt her hand drop from the ramen as it lightly hit against the table as the hot water splashed against the sides, laughing to cover up the sudden change in atmosphere. "Come on, you can't be serious.."
Yet Katsuki only took it a step further, cutting her off immediately. "I'm dead serious."
And that was something the girl wasn't prepared for, whipping her wet hands on her pants before turning around to meet his angry crimson expression. "Katsuki, you do know that Shoto and I have been married for three years, right? And it's not like I decided this on a whim either, it's been a long time and I think…"
Yet her brother only scoffed her crossing his arms over his chest. "It doesn't matter if you've been married for three years or a hundred years. That damn Todoroki isn't going anywhere near you like that. Just the thought of someone...ugh it makes me fucking sick just thinking about it…"
Frowning at his choice of words, Amari's face dropped before closing her eyes in exasperation. This knew she was going to go bad, that much was obvious, but the girl at least hoped he'd be a little more understanding given that she had known Todoroki for eight years now.
Wishful thinking she supposed.
Although her silence seemed to cause her brother to stand even more on edge, staring at his sister with concern. Why wasn't she saying anything? Why was she still staring at the floor like an idiot?
Widening his eyes in realization, a ball of fear and anger entered his throat before stomping towards Amari and pointing to her stomach without a second thought. "Hold on, don't fucking tell me. Are you already…?!"
Yet that's when Amari seemed to wake up, pushing her hands in front of her before immediately replying. "What?! No no no no it's not like that. We were just talking about it that's all. I didn't want to blind side you with the idea so I wanted to run it by you before we continued to talk about it…"
The fact that wasn't already pregnant was a relief, causing Katsuki's shoulder to drop before roughly turning away from his sister with a huff. "Well you can stop talking about it because it's not going to happen."
He was acting like a child, Katsuki knew this. In fact a part of him hated that Amari had brought this whole thing up to him before it actually happened, but her brother couldn't help but feel disgusted about the steps it would take for his sister to have a child.
It made him almost gag just think about it.
Pouting her lips into a huff, Amari followed her brother around the room in intent. "Excuse me? I came here because I wanted to talk to you about all this, to make you comfortable with the idea, not so you can tell me what to do…"
Katsuki couldn't help but scoff though. "No, I'm not fucking comfortable with it. How can you be?!"
This caused the girl to pause before shaking her head and grabbing the nearest pillow next to him before throwing it at her brother's face. "I'm not! That's why I came to see you stupid! I thought we could talk about it like normal people for once…!"
Stopping at her sudden phrase, the pillow fell to the ground as Amari grumbled back. "But then I realized you're still a dumbass…"
The girl crossed her arms over her chest with a huff as Katsuki watched his sister's reactions carefully, his brow turning in confusion. "Hold on, what do you mean you're not comfortable with it? Aren't you here to try and convince me or some shit..?"
Closing her eyes at the accusation, the girl sighed before plopping herself on the sofa, all the anger dissipated in her voice. "I don't know. I'm just, conflicted about everything I guess…"
Amari then pushed her head in her hands before Katsuki let her continue with a sad tone. "We've talked about having a family for years, and I really want to but I'm scared Katsuki..I'm scared they will turn out like me…"
Pushing her hair around her fingers, the girl then took a shaky breath. "Shoto's excited about the idea and he's been busy so I haven't had the time to tell him how I've been feeling yet. It's just, you've seen how my childhood was, how fucked up I was before. My weak immune system, my Nomu blood, my horrible way of thinking in the past, what if I force that on my child? I don't want that, that's the last thing I want…"
Her words pushed into her brother as each of them broke his heart, Katsuki's expression turning dark and saddened at the same time. He couldn't even imagine what she was feeling right now. Given the childhood she had and the hardships his sister faced, it is obvious to see that she was scared.
And he was happy to see that she was trusting him with this pain but it was a double edged sword seeing her like this, mostly because Katsuki couldn't help but blame himself for her horrible past and abusive treatment.
Shaking her head, the girl continued. "And I know I shouldn't think like that, but do I really want to bring a child into this world knowing that I could ruin them? I don't even know what normal is, what being a mother is…"
Amari then pushed her head closer into her heads before feeling a warm silent hand on her head before Katsuki spoke out through her own misery. "So what if you don't know what normal is. That's never stopped you before, has it? Being normal is just another word for being some kind of extra anyways.."
Not understanding, the girl then lifted her head only to meet her brother's serious expression as he pushed down all of his nausea and hate for the topic in order to offer her a moment of comfort. "Listen, as much as I fucking hate it, you love the guy right?"
The girl couldn't help but nod her head at that. "Y-Yeah.."
Ruffing her hair silently, Katsuki nodded. "Then stop worrying about all of these things, of what may or may not happen. You're going to freak yourself out like the air headed idiot you are. Has any of these things even been proven?"
Amari let her eyes fall at that, thinking about any justification for her fears and coming up empty. "No, but.."
Katsuki was quick to answer though, stopping another emanate spiral. "Then stop thinking like they will, dumbass. You always do this, thinking about the worst before it even happens…"
Feeling a heavy ball of emotion at his next words, the boy sucked in a breath before recalling what brought her to believe all this. "Listen, I know that's how you used to cope with everything, with all the shit you had to live through, but stop acting like you're alone in this, okay? Even if that did happen, you know that icyhot would be there for you..."
Pausing for a moment, Katsuki then looked down at his hand before sighing roughly. It wasn't like he wanted to think about his sister having a kid with that Todoroki bastard but if that was the case, then it wasn't like he could abandon her for it.
No, he had already done too much of that in the past.
"...and that I would be there for you."
Almost immediately Katsuki then crossed his arms before gaining a more irritated tone in order not to seem as soft. "But that's only hypothetical cause there is no way in hell I'm going to let Todoroki keep living if that happens, you hear me?!"
And although his words were rough, Amari felt the meaning behind them, causing the girl to relax her shoulders before letting out a small shaky breath at the way he would support her in the future.
Although, she couldn't help but be slightly worried about her husband at that, seeing small sparks appear from his palm as she uttered a nervous laugh.
Maybe it would be for the best if she didn't tell him where she was going after this then. Seems like it would only cause more of an argument. He thought this was all hypothetical right now anyways.
"Hypothetical..right...ha ha ha...I hear you...good to know…"
Then she pushed herself off of his sofa before stretching her arms towards the sky once before checking her phone with a fake gasp. "Oh, would you look at the time! Seems I have an appointment to get to now. Thanks for the chat Katsuki, it was really great ha ha ha…"
It was obvious to tell that she was extremely nervous by something, causing Katuki to lift an eye before following her towards the door. "Oi, I'm serious here! You're not seriously thinking about that, are you?! Two of you are enough, I don't need any more idiots running around!"
Placing her hands out defensively, Amari then quickly found her shoes before shaking her head once as she tried to complete the task without looking in order to leave as soon as possible. "Huh? O-Oh, no no not at all. Like I said this was all hypothetical, right? Yeah yeah that's right. Nothing serious here. No no. Now I really have to go, things to do, people to see, you know? Ha ha ha okay byeeee."
Although that's when her brother pointed to her shoes before narrowing his eyes in skepticism. She was rambling, and that never was a good sign. It meant she was hiding something. "Hey dumbass, I know you're an idiot but are you really going to leave like that?"
Not understanding, Amari then looked down to where he was pointing only to find that her shoes were on the complete wrong feet. Crap, she must have just guessed in her frenzy of leaving so quick.
Giving a fake laugh, the girl then pried off her shoes before quickly turning them around with a hurry. "Oh! Silly me, now why would I ever do that? Ha ha ha thanks Katsuki. You just saved me hours of embarrassment.."
Amari then threw up a small wave before hiding the pink in her cheeks and leaving his apartment without another word as her brother stood there in unnamed shock, his eyes fixated towards the door a moment later.
Oh yeah, she was definitely hiding something from him.
Pacing back and forth on the hospital floor, Shoto looked over at his wife from his spot in the nearest chair before placing a hand to her arm in order to stop whatever downward spiral she was imagining in her own mind. "Amari, everything will be okay. That's why we made this appointment right? To make sure everything's okay.."
The girl nodded back silently before running an anxious head through her hair at the idea and flopping down into the chair next to him. "I know, I know, and it's good that we are doing this but I just can't help but be nervous about it, you know? I thought if I talked to Katsuki first I'd feel better but I think it only made it worse.."
Raising an eye, Todoroki turned his head in question, knowing how difficult her twin could be when it came to absolutely everything. "Did you tell him about the appointment?"
Yet Amari only sighed before placing her head into her hands roughly. "How could I?! He said he was going to kill you if he ever found out I was pregnant. What am I supposed to say after that? I can't tell him that we are trying to go through with it, to have a child together? God, you'd be so dead.."
And Todoroki could completely understand her concern, knowing that the woman had many fears and anxious thoughts about the idea of having a child in general. He really wished he could take it all away from her, to make her relax for once instead of worrying about everyone else.
Placing a warm hand on her back, the man then began to rub small circles over the center as she lifted her head at his tone. "Well, after today at least one of your fears will be gone, right? That's why we are here in the first place. So that you can feel safe…"
And Amari knew what he meant completely, turning her head when the door next to them finally opened, revealing a grey haired female in a pure white doctor's coat. "Todoroki Amari, Todoroki Shoto, it's so wonderful to see you again. How have you been?"
Reaching her hand out, Amari shook it with a small smile as Shoto's hand continued to rest on her back, giving her silent support. "I've been okay, just a little nervous I guess."
The woman seemed to understand though, moving over to her desk before placing the file on the table. "That's quite alright dear. I'm sure these last few weeks or so have been quite stressful for you, right?"
Amari then leaned forward on the chair before replying. "Yeah, I guess I just want to make sure that before Shoto and I get really serious about starting a family, we make sure that there won't' be any…
Clearly her throat, she then pushed her lips together before continuing with slight sadness. "...complications given my immune system."
Nodding back, Shoto added plainly. "I don't want anything to hurt or affect Amari or our possible child, that's why we ordered these tests."
The blonde haired girl crossed her hands in front of her at that, her eyes reflecting back to her own childhood immediately. "It's just, I don't want anyone to have to go through what I did, spending my childhood in a hospital, wondering if I was going to make it till the next day all the time, I don't want to force that on my child.."
Shaking her head in clear pity, the woman pushed her glasses up before giving an understanding smile. "Oh you poor thing, it's okay you don't have to explain anything to me. This is a very big decision and obviously you'd want what's best for them, even if they don't exist quite yet. Now come, let's see these results, okay?"
Amari felt her hands begin to shake before Shoto's warm palm covered her own a moment later, his gaze fixated on her to make sure she was alright. "Are you ready?"
Sucking in a breath, the girl wasn't exactly sure if she was or not but it wasn't as if she could go back now. "Y-Yeah, this is something I have to know.."
The two then watched as the grey haired woman picked up the file next to her before opening the surface all at once and reading the results.
And Amari waited and waited for her to smile, for her to say something that would put her worries at ease, something that could tell her she could be a normal girl for once and be happy.
But all she was met with was silence.
It seemed Shoto was quite on edge as well because the first voice that spoke out was his, sharp and slightly anxious at the strange reaction. "Well, what is it?"
The woman seemed to read over the contents over and over before finally shutting the file and placing it lightly on her desk. "Well, there is nothing in here that suggests that Todoroki isn't strong enough to carry a child, in fact it's almost guaranteed that she could survive a pregnancy if she so chooses."
Pushing her glasses up to her face, she then sucked in a breath before starting another positive note, one that would make the couple hopefully relax. "And there also isn't anything to suggest that the child would have your mutated blood or genetically engineered traits."
Yet neither Todoroki or Amari were stupid or naive, sensing the clear tension in the room, almost like there was some sort of unsaid condition the woman was holding back.
Yes it was good to know that the blonde haired girl was strong enough to survive the process and that their child wouldn't have her disgusting Nomu blood, but that seemingly didn't make them relax.
No, it all sounded far too good. There was something else, she knew it.
And as expected, that's when the woman paused her sentence before closing her eyes, almost like she was trying to prepare herself for the conversation ahead of her, of what news she would have to give.
"Miss Todoroki, have you by any chance lost your quirk before, or had it lessened dramatically?
The question was strange, not one that Amari would have pictured her asking. Maybe there was something off about her chart that showed the constant changes in her quirk.
Taking a breath, the girl decided to answer honestly, recalling all of the struggles and issues she had faced in the past. "I mean yeah, it's happened twice before. Once was when I stopped using my pills that contained Nomu blood and the other time was after the war with All for One. My quirk was basically nonexistent until Endeavor and Hawks built it back up from the bottom.
The woman took in the answer before crossing her hands in front of her and lowering her eyes, almost as she expected that answer somehow. "Yes well, it seems like that process has put a heavy strain on your body. The process of having a baby isn't an easy one, especially with those that have underlying health conditions like yourself. It requires a large amount of stamina and strength to deliver one successfully."
Pausing once more, the air turned thick as the older woman chose her words very carefully, obviously dancing around the topic. "I worry that because of the increased amount of strain on your quirk, the process of birth could be very detrimental and dangerous to you."
And that was a word that Shoto caught onto immediately, his eyes widening as the man immediately leaned forward in his chair. He was desperate, it was obvious to tell from his body language. "Dangerous? What do you mean dangerous?"
Given his sharp tone, the doctor stopped once again before taking a few moments to answer, her response wordy and sad. "You see, the process would absorb all of your strength once more, draining your quirk back to the lowest level it can handle. You're mutated blood would stop it from becoming fatal but the same can't be said about your quirk.."
And although the doctor was only trying to be considerate, the wait for the bad news was torturous for Amari, the girl gritting her teeth before speaking back with plain annoyance to hide her fear and anxiety.
"Miss, I know you're trying to be very sensitive about all this but can we just cut the shit? I've heard this kind of news my entire life, it's okay. Just be honest with me and put it simply. I don't think I can handle the anticipation like this."
It was true, in fact the girl had lived through hell multiple times. Time and time again she had received terrible news, this wasn't any different and she just wanted to get it over with.
The tone surprised the older woman immensely, jumping slightly in fear before taking a loud audible sigh and cutting to the point, just like Amari wanted. "O-Oh, alright. Apologies Todoroki. Well, to put it simply it means that childbirth could drain your stamina so much that it would be dangerous to use your quirk safety, just like the other two times it was reduced back to nothing.."
Stewing the sentence over in her mind, Amari pushed her lips together in thought before simplifying it even more. "So you're saying that having a baby would be like fighting a battle, that I'd have to push my quirk over it's limit?"
"Yes and no. Babies inherit their quirks from their parents which means that a small bit of each of your quirks is needed for successful growth, the mother giving the most to the child since she is the carrier. But in your case Miss Todoroki, your quirk isn't strong enough to give away a piece. If you did, it would seriously limit your capabilities as a hero."
The woman then paused once more before continuing. "And that's only part of that, if you give away a piece of your quirk to your unborn child, it will not only limit your quirk but also give a large amount of stamina away as it is. That means that when the time comes to deliver the baby, you will already be drained from the mere process of birth. I feel that with those two things combined, it would wipe your quirk away completely."
Her eyes were extremely sad but Amari didn't really get the meaning. From what she was saying it sounded like her quirk would just go back to zero. What was so bad about that, it wasn't like it hadn't happened before. This was an easy fix, right?
Nodding her head, the female Bakugo then turned to her husband before meeting his confused gaze as well. He didn't seem to get it either. "Okay, so my quirk will be gone. That's okay, I'll just build it back up again like all those other times before. I don't really see the big deal about all this.."
Yet that's when the doctor said something that shattered her world completely. "That's not it Miss Todoroki. The entire process would be so draining that it could result in losing your quirk permanently."
Everyone stopped then, the air growing quiet as both Todoroki and Amari widened their eyes in horror and shock. Wait, that wasn't right, that couldn't be right. There had to be some mistake. "W-What?"
She had lost her quirk before, but forever? No, that wasn't the case, it just wasn't.
And although the girl was stunned into silence, Shoto certainly wasn't, his voice carrying a new sense of fear and concern as he tightened his hold on his wife's hand. "W-What? What do you mean permanently? Are you saying that if Amari has a child it would make her quirkless?"
Sensing the tension in the room, the older woman sighed once more before clarifying the truth, the one that made both of them sick to their stomachs. "In a way yes, the best hope would be that her quirk would reappear in small slivers over time, but it won't be as strong as before. That's almost a guarantee at this stage. I'm sorry you two, I really am.."
That was the moment everything stopped turning for Amari, her face incredibly pale as her whole entire body shut down. They had dreamed of having kids for years, talking about it, made sure they were one hundred percent ready and now?
She couldn't have them, not if it meant losing her entire hero career.
Shoto as well seemed frozen, blinking in clarity before looking over to his wife in hopes that she wouldn't have a panic attack or fall apart in this doctor's office immediately. It's not like he would blame her if she did though.
Although to his surprise she only remained silent and still, like the girl was trying to process whatever was happening right now. The news, it shut her down completely.
The news, it was like a weight crushing the two of them down and the only thing Todoroki could think was how cruel the entire world was for never giving Amari a moment of happiness, never giving her something without strings or consequences.
She was able to live this long only because of his brother's sacrifice, because Toya died in her place and that was painfully obvious to Amari, he knew it. Sometimes she still had dreams about him, nightmares of the events that played out in order for her to earn her freedom.
And now, it was happening again. Having a family, it sounds wonderful and joyous on paper but for Amari, it seemed there were strings to that dream as well, strings that would result in the end of the career she had worked years for, the one that she had fought to have.
It would be taken away, just like with Toya.
It seemed like an eternity of silence before Todoroki robotically stood up from his seat without another word, turning towards Amari before pulling her up to meet him since she was still too stunned to do it herself. "Come on, let's go home.."
She vaguely heard his voice as Amari focused on the strong arm of his touch before the older woman rose out of her seat, obviously desperate to make the couple feel even remotely better. "I really am sorry you two. I wish I could give you better news…"
Yet Todoroki only looked down at his feet before a ball of cynical sadness crept in, knowing that this wasn't any different then the other devastation that followed them around for years.
"It's alright, we're used to it."
The two rode home in utter silence as Todoroki waited for Amari to speak for the first time, to give him an invitation to talk about whatever they had learned. He wanted to make sure she was ready, that it was her choice to comfortably bring it up.
And he soon received his answer when the woman placed her hand on the doorknob to their room before staring at the floor with unsaid devastation. "A-Are you disappointed?"
The words were strange, causing Todoroki to immediately perk up before moving over to her quickly. He didn't like the way she said that, what it implied. "What do you mean?"
Closing her eyes, Amari then turned to her husband before he saw the line of tears on her eyes, threatening to spill over. "Because I can't...I can't have kids…"
Shoto widened his eyes in surprise as he reached forward in order to hold her before watching Amari place her hands to her face in order to hide the torment and sadness she felt. "God, why did I think any different? Why did I think I could actually have this? I'm sorry Shoto, I'm so sorry…"
Reaching forward, the man's strong arms brought her into him without another word as he gently touched the top of her head. "Amari, how could you say that? I could never be disappointed with you. You don't have to apologize, please don't apologize. This wasn't something you could control.…"
Yet the words only brought even more self loathing into her throat, looking up towards his face as the girl threw her arms around to pry himself off of her. She didn't deserve this kind of comfort right now, not after she ruined his dreams.
"That's just it, it's never something I can control! It's the same old shit. Why can't we just be happy, why does it always end up like this? I don't understand, I hate it…"
Taking a few steps back, Shoto watched as she angrily paced around the room before stopping in one spot as the man thought the exactly same thing.
It seemed like tragedy followed the two of them everywhere.
Amari then ran her hands through her hair before sighing. "What are we going to do?"
Yet it seemed Todoroki had the answer immediately, taking a cautious step towards her before placing a warm hand on her arm, just enough to offer her comfort with the fear of her being suffocated by her hurt.
"That's easy, we can just stop thinking about it, we stop trying now that we know the truth.."
Widening her eyes in surprise, Amari forced her gaze up to his with a gasp. "B-But, what about what we talked about? You said you wanted kids, that you wanted to give them a better childhood than you had."
And although that was true, Shoto knew the truth, pushing his hand towards her hand. "Yes, I did say that, but nothing is more important to me than your happiness. If it means you have to give up your quirk, that you have to give up being a hero, then I won't allow that to happen."
His words were kind of warm, seeping into her as Amari felt herself relax as her husband once again attempted to embrace her silently. "I love you Amari, no one else. You are my wife and the one I chose to spend the rest of my life with. That's all that matters to me."
Feeling the tears already make their way into her eyes, the girl stifled a sob before burying her face into his chest a moment later. "I'm sorry Shoto, I'm sorry our life can't be normal…"
Yet the man only shushed her lovingly, pushing his head across her hair lightly as he hummed. "Shhh Beautiful, I wouldn't have it any other way. You don't have to worry about me, Right now, I'm happy, I'm happy just being able to hold you like this forever. As long as I have that, I don't need anything else…"
Wrapping her arms around Todoroki, Amari took a shaky breath before asking. "Y-You're not upset about everything?"
Gladly accepting the embrace, the man closing his eyes before he replayed the horrible words that the doctor had said only a few hours prior. "Of course I'm upset. I think that's only natural. I wanted to have children with you Amari, I wanted to have a real family. What she told us, it was devastating…"
A heavy ball of shame rose up in her throat at his words, pushing her head deeper in order to erase the hurt. If only she wasn't so weak, if only she didn't push her quirk so much, then she couldn't give him what he wanted.
Although that's when Shoto continued lightly. "But if that is not what is meant to be, if it will cost you everything then I don't want it anymore. If the only choices are having a child or having you for the rest of my life, of course I would always choose you. That's the easiest decision in the world."
Leaning down, he then placed a soft kiss of her head, causing the woman to look up as Todoroki traced the lines on her face quietly. "I only wanted those things to show my love for you. If we can't have children then I will just have to resort to loving and spoiling my wife for the rest of her life instead."
His word brought a small chuckle out of her, blinking the tears away as Amari giggled back with a strained voice. "Spoil me? Come on Shoto, you already do that."
Yet the man only shook his head before trailing his fingers down towards her chin, pushing the surface upwards so that they were only a couple inches away from each other.
"Not at all, you deserve far more I think, a lifetimes worth."
Feeling another giggle make its way into her throat, Todoroki then leaned his face forward before kissing his wife lovingly with the internal promise to protect his family with everything he had, even if it meant forgetting the idea of children.
No, it didn't matter if he wanted it. Nothing was going to take away her happiness, her hard work, her dream of being a hero, and her quirk.
Although, it seemed even he was far too late for that promise.
Three Weeks Later
Hearing the sounds of explosions in the distance, the twins looked up only to find that a building a couple feet in front of them had completely crumbled down, causing Katsuki to scoff as he turned towards the other agency that was helping them take down this villain.
"Alright extras listen up. Amari and I will take the front while you all back us up around the building. We will corner these sons of bitches and take them down tonight."
The group in question was a small lower level villain gang that was making the rounds around the underworld, selling illegal drugs that were stolen and pulled off the market. Basic run of the mill villain things essentially.
Amari was vaguely listening though, seemingly zoned out as the information flew past her. She couldn't really pinpoint it, but the entire day she felt weird. Maybe it was something she ate? The girl didn't know but the last thing she wanted to do was stop a villain right now.
But such is a hero's life, there are no breaks.
Wiping the beats of sweat from her forehead, Amari huffed out a breath as Katsuki glanced over to his sister in silent concern. She seemed different somehow, less focused and paler than before.
So much so that it caused her brother to stomp up to her before pushing her arm back in order to wake up from whatever dream she was having. "Hey idiot, did you hear anything I just said? We are almost ready to go."
Blinking in surprise, Amari quickly pushed his hand off before replying. "What? Yeah of course, I've been ready, stupid. Let's go kick some ass."
Yet Katsuki wasn't so sure, turning his head before purposely relying on the information again in case she didn't hear and the girl was just being stubborn about it. That seemed like her anyways.
"Then act like it. You know everyone's quirks right? If you encounter that purple kimono wearing bitch make sure she doesn't see you. Just cuff her as quickly as possible."
Although the fact that he was very clearly speaking to her like a child caused Amari to groan before swiping the suppression cuffs off his belt and swinging them around. "I got it, I got it. You act like I haven't done this before. Quit worrying Katsuki, it will be easy.."
It seemed like there was some kind of ominous air around those words but her brother chose to ignore it, focusing on the battle ahead. If Amari said she was fine then he would just have to believe her. "Fine, let's go then. Don't drag me down."
As Amari scoffed at the very idea, Katsuki lifted his hands up as the other agency members nodded back, making their way around the back before the twins moved towards the front.
The two then lifted their hands out at the same time before letting out equally powerful explosions, throwing the door off its hinges in a flash as all hell broke loose in a single second.
Seems like the villains were waiting for them. How fun.
Running through the sea of quirks, knives and guns, the two dodged under a swing before a large bunky man grabbed Katsuki's arm from behind, pulling him backwards as Amari cried back loudly. "Katsuki!"
Her brother was quick though, turning around in order to throw an explosion in his face as the man screamed in pain before Katsuki narrowed his eyes at the new group that was moving towards him. "I can handle these extras, go find that villain and take her down!"
Amari hesitated for a small second, always hating the idea of leaving her brother alone, but decided to shove that down a moment later, knowing what was right. And for that, she knew she had to trust him to be okay without her. "Don't die idiot!"
Smirking at the very idea, Katsuki then let out a low chuckle before throwing another explosion towards his enemies and replying. "Yeah right, I should be saying that to you."
The girl couldn't help but roll her eyes at his tone before immediately turning on her heels and rushing past the sea of villains before throwing open the door to her left and stepping into the empty space a moment later.
Her heeled boots clicked against the side before stopping as she heard a low female voice, mocking her all at once. "Oh, if it isn't the great hero Ember. How lucky I am that you decided to grace me with your presence."
Narrowing her eyes, Amari just barely saw a blur from the corner of her vision before immediately pressing her hands into the ground and letting off a big enough explosion so that the entire area filled with thick dark smoke.
Then she rolled out of the way as the villain laughed. "Oh, I see you've been doing your homework on me. You know my quirk quite well, hero."
And of course she did, in fact Katsuki and her knew the quirks of all the villains in this room tonight, but none were as dangerous as this woman.
Her quirk allowed her to sense presences up to a certain distance away, along with being able to immobilize someone just merely by locking eyes.
And that's why the twins decided to use these techniques, knowing that if the woman got a chance to see them, then it would be all over.
Running around the space in order to avoid the woman, Amari quickly reached into her pocket before pulling out the quirk handcuffs she had stolen from Katsuki before swirling them around in her hands. Now, she just had to catch her.
But that seemed easier said than done as another gust of wind blew past her, just barely missing the hero before Amari heard that annoying voice again. "Not bad, not bad, but I think you forgot about one thing about my quirk. It can sense you, even through this little smoke screen you put up."
She was trying to shake her up but Amari wouldn't let her, rolling to the left as a hand tried to reach through the fog. "True, but you can't immobilize me if you can't see me, now can you?"
Chuckling at the idea, Bakugo then ran towards the sound of the voice as quickly as she could, knowing that her smoke screen wouldn't last forever. She had a time limit for this chick and it was obvious that the villain was trying to make her forget that.
Through the smoke, Amari just barely made out the hue of her purple kimono before gripping her handcuffs tightly, knowing this was her shot. Just a little further..
Yet it seemed the villain knew that as well though, speaking towards the wall as if she didn't notice Amari's presence just yet. "I wonder why you're here anyways. I mean, hero's are really something else, aren't they? I honestly can't believe you're here fighting me, about to die.."
Bakugo just barely heard her though, focusing on the goal ahead, wondering why the woman wasn't turning around, why she was just looking in the opposite direction like that.
Although she quickly got her answer when she watched the villain's face turn into a devious smile, closing her eyes as if she knew she had won the battle already.
"I mean, how selfish can you possibly be, not even caring about your own child like that, not caring that they'll be dying too?"
Her words stuck into Amari's mind immediately, the girl forcing herself to think about them as her reflexes slowed every so slightly, giving the woman just enough time to turn around the lock eyes with her.
Wait, what did she just say?
Feeling her muscles immediately freeze up because of the woman's quirk, Amari stopped completely as the villain moved up to her without a problem, circling her like prey. "Oof, from that reaction it looks like you didn't know. How tragic."
Although Amari was still in shock, staring at the woman with so much surprise that it caused the villain to laugh. What the hell did she just say? No, she must have been lying. There was no way that she was….
Proving her own point, the hero forced her lips to move under her quirk, pain pouring out with each word. "S-Stop l-lying.."
Yet that only seemed to bring the villain even more pleasure, stopping right in front of the woman before tracing a mocking hand across the side of her face. "Oh but I'm not. You know about my quirk, remember? You know it can sense presences…"
Tapping her face twice, she then continued darkly. "And right now, I don't just sense one presence…."
She moved her hand towards Amari's stomach before resting it there in order for the reality to truly sink in, for her to be completely destroyed by it. "No, I sense two."
Feeling her heart completely stop, Bakugo tried to process the information before the villain let her quirk dissipate, although the hero was far too shocked to entirely notice the change.
No, in fact there was only one question swirling around in her brain at that very moment, consuming all of her as Amari forced her hand to touch her stomach in silent realization. No, it couldn't be..
She was pregnant?
Chucking at the broken hero, the villain then narrowed her eyes before Amari just barely saw another presence approach from behind the woman, slapping into her body all at once before throwing the blonde haired girl into the nearest wall with a heavy amount of force.
As her body made impact with the cement wall, the girl landed on the floor a couple seconds later as her head began to spin in a million directions, making her nauseous and light headed all at once.
Groaning at that pain, she felt her vision grow blurry as the villains' steps came closer, mocking her all at once as Amari fought to keep conscious given how awful she was feeling. "Don't worry, I'll fix your little problems right now."
Amari then pushed her hands towards the ground, forcing herself to find the strength to stand, to protect her possible unborn child and herself but the overwhelming feeling of nausea and dizziness was overwhelming. Her body felt like it was on fire for some reason as well.
Feeling her eyes lull closed, the footsteps grew closer before Amari groaned again, forcing them back open before her entire body started to become numb. No, not like this..
Yet that's when a large raging explosion filled the space as a dozen hero's attacked the woman without a second thought, Amari watching with a daze before hearing a very familiar voice scream out her name. "Amari!"
It grew closer, so much so that the girl shut her eyes in order to calm the incoming headache.
Although when she did, it seemed like the black spots were just too strong, forcing her into unconscious darkness a moment later.
Katsuki then raced up to his sister before examining her for injuries but finding none. "Hey, hey idiot. I told you not to die. Get up before I kick your ass!"
Pushing her shoulder, the girl gave no response though, his hand moving to her head before letting out a heavy curse. Fuck, she had a fever. He knew it. He should've pushed her more about it earlier. That idiot.
Katsuki then shoved down his terror before pushing his sister in his arms and carrying her towards the entrance before shouting to a nearby sidekick and speaking. "Oi! Call Shoto and tell him I'm taking her to the hospital."
Then he watched as the man quickly dug out his phone before Katsuki moved towards the exit, still hearing the raging sounds of the battle behind him.
But none of that mattered now.
Nothing but his sister mattered.
When Shoto got the call about his wife, he dropped absolutely everything before rushing to the hospital as fast as possible, not caring who or what was in his way. All that he could think about was making sure she was okay.
As the man rushed through the doors in a frenzy, his mind couldn't help but go back to that terrible day where he saw the love of his life on the brink of death, the time where he stayed by her side while she was in a coma for three months.
Just the very idea made him sick to his stomach, praying that he wouldn't have to live through those kinds of horrors ever again, that he wouldn't find his wife clinging to life once more.
Todoroki finally paused though when he saw Amari's brother pacing in front of a chair in the middle of the waiting room, causing him to rush up to him with a heavy concerned shout. "Bakugo, where is she, is she okay?"
At the sound of his annoying voice, Katsuki looked up before shoving his hands in his pockets and shrugging, knowing he'd have to deal with him now. "She's okay, but that's all they will tell me. They wanted to wait until you were here for some damn reason. It's fucking stupid.."
And it was obvious to tell that the angry twin was still barely holding onto his patience, Todoroki knowing that he probably had yelled at the doctors to tell him what was going on.
But Bakugo was her family, so why were they shutting him down like that?
Narrowing his eyes in confusion, another voice soon entered the space as the two turned around at the male doctor's voice. "Are you the husband?"
Todoroki took a step forward before nodding his head in desperation. "Yes, is she okay?"
Yet his worried nature only caused the doctor to chuckle before nodding his head, almost like there was no real emergency. "Yes yes she's alright. Todoroki is suffering from a fever, nothing more, it's quite common for someone in her position right now."
At that, Bakugo couldn't help but stomp up to the doctor before raising an eye. Amari had gotten a fever a dozen times, in fact it was one of the side effects of her weak immune system. "Just a fever? Then why won't you let me see her damn it. We are twins, I'm not afraid of getting sick or anything.."
The doctor looked nervously towards the blonde haired man before clearing his throat and purposely avoided eye contact for some reason. "Yes well, it seems the patient made it quite clear but she only wants to see her husband right now."
And that made Katsuki livid, the boy balling his fists before a hard ball of anger crept into her throat. Didn't want to see him?! Why didn't she want to see her own damn brother?! There was something up here, he could feel it. "What the hell does that mean?!"
The concept seemed strange to Todoroki as well, knowing that Amari loved him more than anything. The fact that she didn't want to even see him, was surprising at least.
Because of that, he elected to ignore Bakugo's crazy shouts in order to figure out the problem in front of them. "Sir, please take me to her…"
Nodding his head, the male doctor then turned away from the raging twin before gesturing for Todoroki to follow him. "Very well, we will talk on the way.."
Yet Katsuki wasn't done with his shouts, his voice carrying over to the two as Katsuki grabbed Todoroki's arm roughly. "Hold on, you can't just leave me here! She's my damn sister, I have a right to know what's going on!"
Pushing his lips together, it was obvious the doctor was about to shut him down again, causing Todoroki to speak for him as he pushed Amari's brother's arm off lightly. "Bakugo, I know you're worried but I will find out what's wrong."
And as much as he hated it, Katsuki knew that whatever Amari was feeling right now, she didn't want him for it. And yes it hurt, but if anyone could get through to her it would be that damn Todoroki. "Whatever, just hurry up before I go in myself."
Knowing that was about as good as a response as they were going to get, Bakugo forced his feet to stop as he watched Todoroki and the doctor leave from behind the corner.
And the minute Bakugo was gone from their sight, the two toned boy turned back to the doctor with even more concern. "Please tell me what's going on."
Once again the doctor only chuckled before looking at his file. "As I said, it's nothing serious. Although because of your wife's weak health, fevers might be more common as we proceed forward."
Although Todoroki didn't have a clue what that meant, turning his head slightly. "I'm sorry, I don't understand. Proceed forward with what? What's going on, why does she only want to see me and not her brother about all of this?"
The older male only continued to flip through his chart though, speaking plain. "Oh well, I imagine she's still in shock about the news. It is a lot to take in. But luckily we did some tests and despite everything, it seems there was no harm to the baby…"
Todoroki felt his feet immediately stop before trying to process the man's last sentence. Wait, did he just say that he thought he did? No no, it couldn't be. He must have heard wrong, right?
"What did you just say?"
Seeing that he had completely stopped walking, the doctor turned his head before calling back to the seemingly frozen boy. "Hmm? I said that she's probably still in shock."
Yet Todoroki only felt even more desperation, racing up to the male before grabbing onto his white coat with extreme anxiety, fear clearly in his eyes. "Not that. What do you mean the baby?"
The doctor remained quiet at that, knowing he had let the important information slip before watching the man connect the pieces extremely slow. "Is Amari pregnant?"
Sucking in a breath, the man then gave a nervous chuckle before taking a step back in order to detach himself from Todoroki with fear that he would be punched. "I admit I was going to wait until you two were together but ah well, congratulations."
Although where most people would feel excitement and joy, Todoroki only remained frozen, his thoughts swirling around and making him absolutely dizzy as he tried to make sense of the crazy statement.
He was going to be a father? He was really going to be a father…
Shaking his head, Todoroki then shut the idea down before turning his head, desperate to know any more information. The two had promised to stop trying for a child after that horrible discussion about her quirk. "H-How long is she?"
The man only turned to his chart and replied with a smile. "Looks to be about three weeks."
Three weeks. That was before the two had set up the appointment, that was before they had agreed to stop trying for a baby, that was during the small period where they didn't know the actual truth about what would happen if she became pregnant.
Pushing his eyes towards the floor Todoroki couldn't help but let out a shaky sigh. When they made that promise, it was already too late, wasn't it?
That's when reality slammed into him before turning back towards the doctor, the two toned man cursing for only thinking of himself. How did Amari feel about all of this, how was she doing? He needed to know, he needed to go to her immediately.
"Take me to her, now."
Sensing the urgency in his voice causing the doctor to quickly pick up the pace, moving before stopping at the furthest room on the left and reaching his hand towards the door. "I'll give you a minute alone. Call me if you need me."
Todoroki just barely was able to nod his head before forcing his hand to the handle and sucking in breath, slightly afraid to see what he'd be welcomed with when he opened the door.
Although the man pushed on, pulling the object open before stepping in as the warm hospital light covered him immediately.
And the first thing he saw was his wife's eyes, filled with tears as she stifled a sob at his presence. "Shoto?"
Todoroki knew what those tears meant immediately, seeing both happiness and pure devastation in her expression, mixed together with a horrible yet wonderful sense of tension in the air.
And even though the man hated it, it was almost as if he read her mind without asking, seeing the meaning as clear as day.
The tears that meant she could have a family with the one she loved.
And the tears that meant she would have to sacrifice her future because of it.
Without another word, Shoto raced up to his wife before she completely broke down completely, crawling into his arms as he held her small shaking frame. "S-Shoto, I don't know what to do...I'm so happy but….but...now my quirk is going to…"
Tightening his arms around her, the man closing his eyes at the absolute cruelty that this moment held. This was supposed to be a happy occasion and yet the two couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sadness and devastation from the sudden news as well.
"I-I know beautiful..I know..."
Sucking in a breath, Todoroki knew he had to find some soft comfort for his wife, placing a shaking hand on her head before feeling his own eyes line with conflicting tears. "Whatever happens, I'm here for you, okay? I'm not going anywhere…"
Amari then trailed her hands towards her stomach before closing her eyes as the tears leaked through in a cruel line across her cheeks. "G-God, it's so bittersweet. I-I can't believe I'm going to be a mother...I don't even know how to be a mother…"
Todoroki couldn't help but sadden at that, knowing about the horrible childhood they both lived through. The truth was, they didn't know anything about being parents. They didn't even know where to begin with a healthy family dynamic.
Placing his hand on top of the one holding her stomach, her husband only shook his head before Amari watching the tears spill from his eyes as well. "A-Amari, my Amari, my sweet beautiful Amari, I know you are going to be a wonderful mother…"
And that should have made her happy but the girl could only think about the consequences leading to this child, the ones that would strip away all of the hard work and dedication she had given all of these years.
Feeling her breathing shorten, the girl cried back. "I-I know I should be happy but..it hurts so much...I don't want to lose my quirk...I don't' want to give up being a hero…."
Something else crept into her mind then, causing Amari to push her hands over her head with a quick breath. "A-And Katsuki...oh my god Katsuki...he's going to be so disappointed...our agency...our dream...what am I going to tell him...he's gonna hate me…"
Todoroki noticed her panicked breaths though, rubbing small circles on her back in order to get her to calm down and not have an attack. He couldn't blame her for being so overwhelmed thought, no wonder why she didn't want her brother in here.
She just didn't have the heart to tell him yet.
Speaking back as calm as possible, the man called out to her. "Shh It's okay, it will all be okay. Please stop thinking like that, your brother loves you, he would never hate you…"
Although that was when another voice entered the mix, causing both Katsuki and Amari to immediately freeze as he huffed back. "And why the hell would I hate you?"
The two then turned only to find Bakugo Katsuki standing a few away in the doorway, his arms crossed as a nurse hurried behind him with a hard bow. "I'm so sorry, he just bursted in by himself and…"
Yet Katsuki was quick to talk over the scared girl, stomping into the space as Amari felt her breathing completely stop. "It's your fault since you don't wanna tell me what the hell is going on. Now, explain. Why did you think I'm going to hate you?"
But the couple was quiet, earning even more frustration from her brother. "Well?! Spit it out already you idiots!"
Although Katsuki immediately felt guilty when Amari flinched at his loud voice, watching the girl cling to her sheets so hard that her knuckles began to turn white. "K-Katsuki..I…"
Yet she stopped a moment later, forcing her eyes to the ground before Todoroki knew that she wasn't stable enough to have this conversation right now. Yes Katsuki needed to know, but he didn't want her doing it, not right now at least.
So because of that, Todoroki moved to his feet before facing Bakugo in order to relieve some of his wife's anxiety. "Amari and I are going to have a family."
He said it so incredibly vaguely but it seemed Katsuki knew exactly what he meant, the boy's eyes widened with shock before turning to his sister as he pieced it together. "You've got to be fucking kidding me. You're pregnant?"
Once the words were said out loud, Amari felt her head drop in shame before she saw her brother take another step towards the love of her love, causing her to immediately stumble out of her bed and protect Shoto. "W-Wait.."
The world quickly began to spin as the effects of her fever kicked in but Amari was too afraid to care, her shaking arms lifting out in order to keep him safe from whatever devastation would follow. "I-Im sorry, I'm sorry but please don't kill him. It's not his fault…"
Her voice was so incredibly fragile and weak, causing Katsuki to take a step closer as his sister who began to shake even more for his reaction. "Not his fault? He's the one that got you fucking knocked up! I can't believe you, touching my sister like that.."
Todoroki could help but turn his head at that. "Bakugo, we are married."
Although Katsuki only raised his voice an octave higher. "It doesn't matter! You obviously have a death wish icy hot."
Yet Amari only grew more panicked, racing forward before grabbing onto her brother's shirt as she watched heavy sparks leak from his palms. "Katsuki, don't…"
In the middle of her sentence though, the world turned upside down as she lost all feeling in her legs before falling towards the floor as Todoroki raced to catch her. "Amari!"
Feeling his arms around her, Amari suddenly felt the horrible reality crash into her, placing her hands up to cover her face before feeling the tears line her eyes again. "K-Katsuki, please don't hate me...don't hate me…"
Not understanding, her brother's anger dissipated before repeating the very first question he had asked when he entered the room. "And I keep asking you why the hell I would think that?"
Pushing her lips together, a loud sob was overheard before the girl continued. "T-They told me that if I have a child, it will cause me to lose my quirk f-forever…"
The color from Bakugo's face immediately drained at her words, staring down at his sister before he realized what she meant.
Amari was going to be quirkless, his sister was going to be quirkless?
No, that couldn't be right. Amari was strong, she was stubborn. She wouldn't let her quirk disappear like that. For years she had built it back up from the bottom time and time again. There was no way that it could disappear just like that.
Their dream, their dreams of being heroes together, their dreams of opening an agency together, their dream of being number one. After Amari gave birth, would it really be all over?
Gritting his teeth in clear anxiety and fear, his voice came back a moment later, slightly shaking and rough. "What? What the fuck does that mean?"
Yet his tone caused the girl to cover her hands over the head even more, pushing herself into her body in order to cope with the rejection that was inevitable. "I'm sorry...I don't want to give it up...I don't want to disappoint you...I don't want to lose my quirk but..it's too late..."
And Bakugo knew it had to say something but quite honestly, the man was in shock, staring at his broken and crying sister in order to form any kind of response but finding nothing but silence.
She was telling the truth, this wasn't some kind of sick joke, Amari was going to lose her quirk, she was going to have to give up becoming a hero, she wasn't going to be his partner anymore for their agency.
Everything, it was gone just like that.
Blinking back, Katsuki finally opened his mouth with the intent to yell at her before Todoroki spoke before he got the chance, crandling Amari before glaring towards the man at once. "Katsuki, I know you're hurt but don't project it on her. She's had enough today.."
At the sound of his first name, Bakugo stopped whatever he was going to say before staring at his sister's husband in surprise. He had never called him by his given name, so why now? It was almost like he was insanely serious.
Because of that, the blonde haired man felt his shoulders slump before balling his first and gritting his teeth in a mix of anger and devastation. His emotions, they were overflowing and he didn't know how to stop them.
And that's when he realized that icy hot was right. He couldn't control his responses right now, not when he was so incredibly crushed by the cruel reality. "Whatever."
Then he turned on his heels before walking out of the room, slamming the door on his way out as Amari flinched at the sudden sound, burying her face into her husband's chest before releasing her sobs into the open space and he held her.
And Katsuki heard them on the other side of the door, his back leaning against the surface as he let himself take a shaky uneven breath before covering his eyes in order to force the tears to never escape.
Although it seemed he didn't try hard enough as a couple leaked from the sides as Bakugo stifled a sob of his own, knowing that nothing would ever be the same after today.
Knowing that his twin couldn't stand beside him anymore in the same way ever again.
A couple days later, Amari was supposed to be making her way to her house but instead found herself wandering the street instead, aimlessly taking in the night air and thinking to make sense of her growing thoughts.
After being discharged from the hospital, she noticed that Shoto liked to keep a watchful eye on her, reassuring her that everything would be okay and that he would be there when she was ready to talk about everything.
But what was there to talk about? She was happy, so incredibly happy to be able to have a child with her husband, the love of her life, it was something she had only dreamed about, something she vaguely thought of as she was getting tortured as a child.
Although now that it was happening, it felt bittersweet, like it almost felt wrong to be happy. Mostly because it meant letting down all of her friends, family and most importantly, herself.
Feeling a small swirl of gold matter appear in her hands, Amari looked down at the shimmery substance as it mocked her all together. She had worked so hard to have a quirk, to stand on even ground with everyone she loved and now it seemed like it was all for nothing.
Quickly deactivating it, the girl then closed her eyes before finally looking up only to see that her legs had brought her to a very familiar looking building, one that brought her a strong sense of nostalgia all at once.
U.A. high school
Narrowing her eyes towards the warm pull, Amari found herself stepping on the grounds a second later before pulling out the old pass that Aizawa had given her at graduation, allowing her to enter the gates and get past the security in order to see Eri.
And the minute her boots touched the grass, Bakugo couldn't help but stop herself and try to remember what it was like to first walk in his courtyard, to feel nervous about her first day of school. It felt so incredibly long ago now.
She could almost still hear it, Katsuki's tsundere attitude the first time he tried to do something nice for her.
"Why are you giving me your address? I know where you live already."
"It's your address too."
Smiling to herself, the girl then moved a couple feet to the left as she recalled how awkward Katsuki was back then, giving her his address so that they could finally live together, just like a real family.
The two had really grown since then, it was obvious to tell. Hell, back in the beginning the twins could barely hold a simple conversation, never mind look at each other. Now that she thought back to it, it was short of silly, not realizing how stubborn they were in their own way.
Moving even further up, Amari then pushed open the door to the school as she was met with the smell of nostalgia as the girl strolled down the hallways. This was where she met her friends, this was where she met the love of her life, this is where she finally understood her brother.
The girl then couldn't help but find her old classroom, turning to push open the object before strolling through the darkness as her friend's voice echoed back to her, taking in the space all at once.
"G-Guys, What is all this?"
"We all wanted to welcome you back Mari-chan. I know how hard you worked to get here, and I wanna say I'm really proud of you."
Smiling to herself, Amari then shook her head before moving over towards the window and finding her old seat, sliding into the chair turning to her right a picture seeing Todoroki for the first time, when she acted like a total fool in front of him.
"Hello! You must be my neighbor! my name is…"
But slowly her world stopped when she realized just who was sitting next to her. It was him, the tomato boy, Todoroki.
Then without thinking she gave out a huge scream, almost acting like he was a bug or a spider on the ceiling. "AHHHHHHHHH."
Pushing the hair from her face, Amari then giggled to herself before placing a silent hand on her desk. It had been so long and yet she could remember everything like it was yesterday.
Originally, she only went to U.A for Katsuki, for him to notice her. The girl never wished for anything else and yet those years turned out of the best of her life and she was so incredibly glad that she made the choice to come here.
Not just because of Katsuki but for herself as well.
Then her hand couldn't help but travel to her stomach before rubbing the surface lightly before letting her expression fall as another memory crashed into her. This time it was from the training camp, when she blew up at Shoto for trying to save her life.
"I'm serious. You don't even know who gave you these pills. Maybe if you stopped using them then your lifespan would…"
"It would mean that I would go back to being that useless frail little girl who couldn't do anything. I'm not going to live without my quirk Shoto, I'd rather die."
"Don't say that, don't say that you'll just give everything up like that. You are more than just your quirk Amari."
"No I'm not!
As she processed the forgotten memories, Amari felt her eyes turn down before truly thinking about the words and how she felt back then.
She was nothing without her quirk.
That was the phrase that always kept popping up, kept weighing her down into her own self loathing. That she'd never amount to anything without her quirk, that she'd never be loved by her brother without her quirk, that she'd never succeed without her quirk..
Although, the more she thought about, that's when a heavy realization crossed her face all at once.
But before she could speak on it, another voice interrupted her as he stood in the doorway. "I had a feeling you'd somehow be here. It's peaceful, isn't it?"
Looking up, she found Shoto smiling back at her, causing the girl to hum with contentment. "Yeah, it makes me feel like I'm back there, where everything was so simple."
Todoroki then moved up to his old desk before sitting down and touching the top lightly. "I wouldn't say simple, but somehow I wouldn't mind reliving it either. It's where I found you after all."
Feeling her cheek heat up at his words, the girl then turned her face away from her husband before continuing. "Y-Yeah, I guess that's true."
Clearing her throat, Amari continued. "I'm sorry for being so distant. I've just had a lot to think about…"
Although he didn't seem bothered in the slightest. "It's alright. I wanted to give you your space. It's overwhelming I'm sure."
Nodding back, the girl couldn't help but bitterly smile. "You got that right. Who would have thought that after years of fighting for my quirk I'd have to debate giving it up? Talk about irony, am I right?"
The humor was drained quickly though as Amari lowered her head in sadness while Todoroki answered for her in hopes of any form of comfort. "Do you want to talk about it?"
That only caused the girl to sigh roughly before tracing the lines on top of her old desk. "Do you remember the conversation we had during training camp, the one where you tried to get me to stop using those pills?"
And although Shoto wanted to remember, the conversation was blurry, causing Amari to answer for him. "You said I was more than my quirk and I didn't believe you, I couldn't believe it, given what I was told and what I had to go through to get to that point."
Pushing her finger through her hair, the girl then continued to ramble. "God, I was always like that, wasn't I? Always forcing my quirk, enhancing it with Nomu blood just to be stronger. But it was never about that, it wasn't ever about my quirk. I just wanted to feel worthy enough, I just wanted to be loved…I just wanted to be accepted like everyone else…"
Laughing to herself, Amari couldn't help but shake her head. "I wanted to have a strong quirk because I thought that's what I needed for my brother to love me, I thought that's what I needed for anyone to want me. That's why I pushed myself so damn hard, why I was so god damn focused on it all the time. It wasn't because I actually wanted my quirk, I just felt like I needed it to survive…"
The amusement stopped then, causing her hand to fall back on the desk with her voice laced with disbelief for the girl she was a long time ago. "But along the way, it seemed I proved myself wrong without even realizing it.."
Not understanding where she was going with this, Todoroki then watched as Amari jumped up from her seat before standing by her husband's old desk as new found clarity touched her eyes.
"Shoto, I want to have this baby. I want to start a family with you."
Widening his eyes in utter shock, the man couldn't help but blink in surprise as Amari placed a loving hand to her stomach in response. "W-What? But what about your quirk?"
Yet the girl only shook her head before replying with a smile. "Do you remember what I told you the day you found out my time limit, what my reasons were for becoming a hero?"
And just as she said it, the memories came pouring back to him all at once, recalling what she told him fearlessly on the day they officially become friends, the day he found out about her possible early death.
Todoroki remained speechless at this, not knowing what to say. Finally, his voice came out in a soft whisper. "Aren't you afraid?"
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't but I realized a long time ago that if I wanted to accomplish my goal, then I would have to do myself. That's why I don't want to be the strongest hero. I just want to be remembered somehow. "
Seeing that he was in deep thought, Amari couldn't help but soften her eyes. "Being a hero was never about being the strongest, it was never about being the best for me. I just wanted to make an impact on this world, I wanted to be remembered, and I thought back then that I needed a quirk to do it…"
The girl then swirled around in a circle before lifting her arms out. "But look at me Shoto, look at what I've done. I've saved people, I've changed them for the better, I've brought others together. I found a family, I found the love of my life, I have the best friends I could ever ask for and I finally understand my brother. I've done more than anything I could have ever dreamed of and I didn't need a quirk to do it..."
Amari then thought about how she felt as a child, the first time she tried to justify her terrible life threatening actions. They really were all lies though, weren't they?
"I used my quirk as an excuse, as a crutch because I hated who I was on the inside. I thought that without it I was nothing, that I would never be able to live in this world, that I would be cast aside and unloved forever. That's why I so desperately clung to it, because I was afraid of the person I'd be without it, I was afraid of being weak and thrown away..."
Flashing back to that conversation at the training camp, Amari then placed a hand to her chest before finally being at peace with the idea that she rejected so long ago.
"But you were right all along Shoto, I'm more then just my quirk, I'm so much more…"
Placing her hands on her stomach in order to feel her unborn child, Amari then finished with a smile that lit up the entire room, one that showed how much she cherished herself now.
"So that's why, I will be okay. I can let it go, because I don't need it anymore. It's not going to stop me from wanting to save people, and it certainly isn't to stop me from being a hero."
And Shoto couldn't help but stand in shock at the incredibly stunning woman in front of him, the one that now felt so comfortable in her own skin that she was willingly going to give away the one thing she had clung to all of these years.
Back when she told him about her death he had thought she was the strongest person he had ever met and it was obvious that absolutely nothing had changed. Sure, the details had changed but her reasons, they were still the same as the day he had met her.
And even now, she still took his breath away like it was the easiest thing in the world.
Moving up to his wife, Todoroki then placed a warm hand on her stomach before looking up at the women he loved more than anything. "Amari, I'm so proud of you. It doesn't matter if you lose your quirk. You and our child, I promise that I will love them both unconditionally."
Smiling under her breath, the girl couldn't help but blush. "Our kid sure is going to be pretty lucky to have a father like you, to love them like that."
Shaking his head, Todoroki then took a step forward before placing a loving hand on her cheek. "Only because they will have an equally loving mother, that I'm sure they will absolutely adore."
Amari laughed at the mere idea before feeling her mind turn towards somewhere else, her smile fading. "I'm just worried how Katsuki's going to react about everything. I don't want to hurt him, that's the last thing I want.."
Although that's when a voice behind them echoed from the doorway. "Stop talking like I'm so damn fragile, will you?"
Widening her eyes, the two turned only to find Katsuki standing in the doorway of the classroom, his arms crossed over his chest. Wait, how was that possible? "Katsuki? What are you..?"
Although that's when Shoto spoke up, taking a step away from his wife before gesturing towards the loud blonde. "I called him. I knew you two wanted to speak to each other about everything."
Stomping into the room, her brother scoffed before walking up to the group. "Yeah, now what's this about me being weak and shit? Because if you say that again I'll kick your ass brat."
The girl was still in shock though, feeling her cheeks light up with embarrassment before turning away. "Wait, did you hear everything?"
Nodding back, the boy replied roughly. "Yeah, I heard your whole damn speech. Thought you'd never shut up."
His words were harsh, causing Amari to immediately sadden before fixing her eyes to the floor. He must have hated what she said, about giving up her quirk like that. What could she possibly say to make it better? To make him not hate her?
Yet she was surprised when Katsuki spoke back, his voice an entire octave quieter as the words pierced her very soul. "Listen, you're my sister. Always have an always will be. Being quirkless, that shit doesn't change anything, it doesn't change the fact that you're still my sister."
Lifting her head up in a single moment, Amari then turned to lock eyes with the same hue of red crimson expression she had come to know. "W-What?"
Bakugo only grumbled to himself though, placing a nervous hand on his neck. "L-Look, I'm sorry for blowing up on you and everything. I just didn't know how to handle all this shit, with the idea of you leaving me."
Amari couldn't help but gasp at that though, already racing towards him. "What? Katsuki, I'm not leaving you, I couldn't never leave you.."
Shaking his head, her brother only grumbled once more, recalling how passionate her words were when she thought he wasn't listening, the ones that made him realize what she had always tried to hide all these years. "Yeah, I figured out that much at least from your dumb speech.."
Standing in silence, she let her brother continue as he shoved his hands in his pockets.. "And as much as I fucking hate it, you have your reasons for doing this right? You already said them in that giant ass speech so that's that. Besides, I already knew you didn't need a quirk to be a hero, stupid. My twin is just that badass."
Hearing his words of encouragement fill her ears, Amari couldn't barely believe it, feeling tears make their way into her eyes before blinking them away a second later.
Yeah, that's right. She was going to be okay.
Seeing that he was struggling with his words, his sister then silently moved up to the two boys before giving them a small smile. "Hey, can I hug you two?"
Yet as expected, Bakugo put up a face of disgust. "Hell no."
But Amari didn't listen, grabbing onto both boys before pushing them into a hug on either side of her as she buried her face straight in the middle of the two people that loved her more than anything, that would support her through anything.
"I love you two, so much…"
At the sound of her voice Todoroki felt his eyes melt before allowing his lips to curve into a gentle smile, knowing that he felt the exact same to the girl in front of him. "I love you too Amari, more than anything."
Although Katsuki heard their romantic exchange, rolling his eyes as he soaked in his sister's words as a smile graced his lips before he could even process it. "Yeah yeah whatever nerd. I love you too. Now get off of me.."
Giggling at the exchange, Amari then closed her eyes before feeling at peace for the first time in her life.
Somehow she already knew that they would be just fine.
And when those nine months had passed, everyone was in utter chaos as Amari was rushed to the hospital, Katsuki yelling at a variety of nurses as Todoroki held onto her clearly pained hand before squeezing it once. "It's okay beautiful, I'm here for you, I'm right here…"
Gritting her teeth at the overwhelming pain, Amari felt herself being burned from the inside as an array of doctors and nurses circled around her, obviously getting ready for what was about to occur.
But as the bright light hit her eyes, the girl couldn't help but feel herself return to that horrible chair the villains had strapped her two, the one where they would torture her for days at a time. She knew it wasn't real but it really felt like she was back there, that she had never left.
Forcing herself to turn, Amari's stomach erupted in pain as another long contraction hit before whimpering back. "S-Shoto, S-Shoto I'm scared.."
Her words broke her husband's heart, pushing the sweating hair from her face before giving her another squeeze. "I-I know, I know you are. It's okay, it's okay to be scared, I'm not going anywhere…"
Though his words were distant, they offered her a sliver of comfort as the long and painful process began, her husband never leaving her side as he had promised, holding onto her hand as she screamed out in the overwhelming pain that followed.
And as the time grew longer, Amari could feel herself growing weaker by the moment as a tiny piece of her slipped away from her grasp in a single instant. She couldn't stop it, but somehow in the back of her mind the girl knew that this was the moment her quirk was going to disappear.
How strange, when she first heard that she was going to lose her quirk Amari thought that she wouldn't have noticed the chance, but actually experiencing it was something else entirely.
No, she could very clearly sense a part of her disappearing, a crutch and comfort being erased with each heavy breath and push.
But unlike what you may think, Amari wasn't scared of it.
No, she continued to push on, feeling every part of her old life, her old desires and unhealthy habits spills away into nothing as she focused on the warmth of her husband's hands and her friends and family on the other side of that door.
And what was heard next was the sound of not one, but two baby cries.
Five Years Later
"Thank you Sir, have a wonderful day."
The shopkeeper then bowed in response as she handed the large bouquet of white roses in Todoroki's direction as the man gratefully accepted them before heading onto the busy city streets, the sun hitting his eyes almost immediately.
Looking down at his watch, he then smiled before turning around and joining the crowds as a bunch of people pointing him out in awe, wondering where the number three hero was going at this time of day?
Of course, Shoto paid no mind to the stranger, only focused on the very familiar large building in the distance as he crossed over the gates of U.A. high school, the nostalgia still bringing him a sense of comfort every time he made his way over.
And as he passed by the large courtyard, many students couldn't help but stop and stare as well, some giggling to their friends as others just couldn't help but be starstruck.
"Look, look! It's Todoroki. I can't believe he's here again!"
"And he brought flowers again too! How romantic!"
"Aww I want a man like that. Where can I find one!?"
Once again he paid no mind to them though, finding a familiar classroom on his left before pushing open the door without a second thought as Amari's voice echoed through the space, just as breathtaking as the first time he had heard it.
"Shoto? What are you doing here? I thought you had to train your new sidekicks today?"
His lips couldn't help but curve into a small smile though, lifting the flowers in her direction as Amari's eyes softened. "I wanted to see you, so I came to pick you up. Is that alright?"
Feeling the petals between her fingers, the girl shook her head. "Aww You're so sweet. Of course it's alright. Let me just gather my things and we can go. I'm sure Katsuki's probably having some trouble with everything anyways."
Amari then turned to grab her bag only to see two kids zoom in front of her face as the girl groaned back before stopping them immediately. "Eri, what did I tell you about running? It's not a competition, silly girl."
Perking up, the white haired girl only pouted her lips before replying. "Sorry Sissy, I'm just really excited! It's the weekend and Shin Shin and Izu-chan are taking me to a cat cafe! I just can't wait to see all the cute kitties!"
Her excitement was infectious though, causing Amari to let out a small chuckle as she answered lightly. "Alright alright, that does sound really exciting. Have fun. Also remember, I'm your teacher now Eri, people are gonna look at you weird if you keep calling me Sissy all the time."
Seemingly realizing her mistake the high school girl couldn't help but pace a nervous hand to her neck. "Oops! Sorry Siss...I mean Todoroki sensei...I guess that's going to take some getting used to. I'll work on it!"
Then the white haired girl turned around before grabbing hands with her friend as she practally pushed her out of the door. "Come on Ember, let's go see those cats!"
Ember seemed equally excited though, pausing before her favorite hero before bowing once in respect. "Have a nice day Todoroki sensei!"
Then the two hurried on their way as Amari watched with a softened expression. It still didn't feel real, having both Eri and the girl that inspired her hero name in her class. It almost seemed like it was some sort of fate or something.
After finding out that her quirk was basically nonexistent, Amari approached her old teacher Aizawa and next day he was able to get her a spot teaching at her old high school.
She wasn't sure how she felt about it at first but the girl couldn't deny that it somehow felt right.
Being able to keep kids like her and discover their potential, it was everything she could have wanted.
And it wasn't like she was out of the Bakugo agency either, in fact Amari still took care of all of the technical aspects while her brother focused on the actual physical side. They were still a team and even though it was different then what they were used to, the two seemed to make it work.
But for both Ember and Eri, the day Amari found out that they were accepted into the hero course together, she could hardly believe it. And being able to teach them, to help but grow into great heroes, now that was something that the woman was truly blessed for.
Pushing the idea away, Todoroki then reached forward before intertwining his fingers with hers as the two made their way out of the classroom and through the gates in order to get back home.
As the two were walking, Amari couldn't help but feel slightly nervous about the chaos that they would return to. "I'm worried about Katsuki. Do you think he's doing okay?"
Although her husband wanted to ease her worries, it seemed the man himself also had some fears about how they had left her explosion loud mouthed brother. But for her, he tried to find the positive. "I'm not sure, I suppose there is only one way to find out.."
And almost as if on cue, a loud shout was overheard through their front door, causing both Shoto and Amari to turn to each other with confusion and fear. "What the fuck is this, who let you have this?!"
Running to the door as fast as she could, Amari threw open the door as Todoroki followed closely behind her in order to find out what the hell was going on. "Katsuki?"
Yet as soon as he heard his sister's voice, the angry blonde revealed himself, stomping up to the two before shoving some kind of object in her face with clear fury. "Finally, took you two idiots long enough! You wanna tell me what the fuck this is doing here?!
Blinking in surprise, Amari then refocused her eyes only realizing what he was so upset about, why he was so angry all of the sudden.
It was a Deku action figure.
Not understanding, the girl couldn't help feel her lips turn up in clear amusement before letting out a chuckle as Katsuki waved the object in her face. "Hey, this is serious! I want answers!"
Yet they were soon stopped when a pair of small feet sounded through the space before a very upset little red haired boy ran up to them, his face and cheeks puffed out in the process. "Uncle Suki! Give it back! We were playing heroes.."
Katsuki only grumbled though, turning towards the little boy before showing him the doll. "Do you wanna explain to me why you wanted to play as this nerd instead of me?"
Crossing his arms across his chest, the boy answered a moment later. "Cause Deku is the best. He's so cool and awesome, and he's number one!"
Bakugo only blinked in disbelief though, turning to Todoroki and Amari with a blank expression. "I think your kid is fucking broken."
Although his words only brought even more amusement, causing the girl to cover her mouth in order to hide her suppressed giggle. "Sorry Katsuki, but it looks like you've been outvoted."
Then she leaned down to the ground level before lifting her arms out as the little red haired child finally recognized how much he actually missed them. "Come here sweetheart. Give Mommy a hug."
And he happily did so, jumping into her embrace without a second thought. "Welcome home Mommy and Daddy. I missed you! Uncle Suki doesn't play heroes very well. He always gets angry.."
Widening his eyes in disbelief, Bakugo felt his jaw hang open in disbelief. "Excuse me? I don't always get angry."
Yet the red haired boy only stuck his tongue out, clearly teasing him. "You do tooo."
Although that's when Amari decided to intervene between the two children, one of them being her brother, as the girl ruffled her child's hair with a smile. "Now now Toya, let's not tease Katsuki too much, okay? As funny as it is, we should take it easy on him."
Toya didn't like it, but he seemed to understand his mothers warning before giving up the fight, batting his red eyes with understanding. "Okay Mommy..."
Shoto couldn't help but find the antics comical as well though, looking over his son before asking. "Where is your sister?"
Smiling back towards the two toned man, Toya then hurried out of the arms of his mother before running up to his Dad without a second thought. "She's sleeping. I tried to get her to play but.."
And then almost on cue, a small blonde haired girl with crystal blue eyes revealed herself before rubbing the surface with a yawn, obviously still half sleep. "Mommy, Daddy? Oh, You're back..welcome home…"
Her tone was slightly groggy, causing Amari to smile towards her daughter. "Yes we are back. Did you have a nice nap Ayumi?"
Nodding once, Ayumi replied a moment later. "Yeah, but Uncle Suki and brother were really loud…"
Fully understanding how loud Katsuki can be, her mother only shook her head in exasperation, already pictured how hard it was to sleep with those two yelling at each other the entire time.
You see, where as Toya seemed to inherit the traditional "Bakugo" personality of being loud and vocal, it seems that their other daughter Ayumi loved the quiet more than anything. In fact, it was as if she was more like her father in many aspects.
It kind of made her laugh internally whenever she would sometimes reply in a plain and monotone manner, almost as if she was a carbon copy of Todoroki. She definitely kept more to herself than her brother, that was for sure.
Yes the two were technically twins but they weren't identical like Amari and Katsuki were supposed to be. No, it was very obvious to tell that both Toya and Ayumi shared a different set of personality traits.
But of course it didn't matter because they loved them just the same.
Clapping her hands together, Amari then rose to her feet with newfound excitement. "Now, your father and I have a little surprise for each of you. Are you ready to see it!?"
Toya couldn't help but lean forward in anticipation, then his little hands flapping around with excitement. "What is it?! Tell me tell me tell me!"
Although she didn't even get the chance to answer because a moment later, the door next to them began to ring as Todoroki moved to the surface and opened it slightly to let the newfound stranger in.
And the first thing Toya saw was the very familiar shade of green hair, the very same one from his action figure holding a small gift in his hands. "Hello, I hope I'm not intruding…"
No way, the number one hero was here, at their house?! It was too exciting for the little boy to even imagine. "Whoaaaa. Deku, is it really you! This is so cool!"
Deku couldn't help but laugh though, moving over to the boy before giving his hair a light ruffle. "Hey there, it's nice to meet you. Your mom said that you wanted to meet me so I decided to come over. I hope that's okay?"
But of course, the little boy only nodded back happily. "Yes yes yes! This is the bestest day ever! Thank you Mommy and Daddy!"
Knowing that their son was beyond happy was enough for the two to exchange a look before the door bell began to ring once more, only for a nosey set of red wings entered a moment later.
"Heyo! Sorry, the door was open so I let myself in! I'm here to join the party!"
Keigo then lifted up two presents of his own before Ayumi and Toya turned towards the man with a happy grin, echoing out together. "Uncle Kei! You're here too?!"
Throwing a cocky grin the hero threw his arms open as both kids tumbled into him. Keigo wasn't blood related but they still thought of him as family just the same. "Ya got that right kids! I wouldn't miss this for the world!"
And even though they didn't understand what he meant, they were just happy that one of their favorite uncles had shown up randomly, the two nuzzling into his wings as the hero wrapped them around the kids without a second thought.
Although that wasn't the end as another voice entered the space a moment later, extremely loud and excited as Mitsuki Bakugo and her silent husband busted in through the doors with a shout. "Now where are my two beautiful grandkids?! I hope Katsuki hasn't turned you into dumbasses yet.."
And to be completely honest, both Toya and Ayumi were slightly intimidated by their grandmother, feeling the two being swept off their feet before spinning them around happily. "Aww you two are growing so fast! Come here and give your grandma some love!"
Laughing at the sight, Amari shook her head before two others appeared behind her parents, the pinked haired woman next to him holding two cards as he called back to their mom. "Hey short stuff, you gonna welcome us or what?"
Turning around at the voice, Amari found Shinso and Izumi holding hands by the doorway, the purple haired boy giving her a teasing share as the girl chuckled under her breath. "Of course Shih Tzu, come on in.."
Izumi then bowed in response before walking up to the female Bakugo. "T-Thank you for inviting us. Congratulations..."
Smiling at the idea, the blonde haired girl then looked down only to find a fairly large diamond ring on Izumi's left hand, causing Amari to raise an eye while playing suspicious. "And I think a congratulations is in order for you too.."
Izumi then turned to the ring before immediately growing red and placing her hand over the surface in order to hide her growing embarrassment. "T-Thank you. He proposed last night."
Amari couldn't help but beam proudly at that, looking over to her two friends before leaning forward near Shinso's ear so that only he could hear. "I better be invited to the wedding."
Then she turned away before another knock was overheard, except this time it was far more forceful than the others before it. "Coming…!"
Throwing open the surface, Amari recognized his angry glare from miles away, causing the girl to want to play around with him, just like old times. "Eyy! Enji, my favorite father in law! So glad you could make it..!"
Although the man only stared at her blankly, blinking twice as he took in her idiocy before immediately turning around and walking away, as if he was already over everything.
Gasping at his response, she quickly followed after him before grabbing his arm to stop Todoroki's father from leaving. "Okay okay I'm sorry. It was a joke. Please don't leave…"
From the desperation in her voice, Endeavor did stop though, turning back around to face his old trainee with a draining sigh. "You're still an idiot I see.."
Smirking at his insult, the girl only crossed her arms though. "And you still don't know how to take a joke. Come on in, everyone's already here. We were waiting for you to begin."
Because of that, Endeavor reluctantly complied, entering the space and the bustle of crowds before Toya pulled on Amari's pant leg with a pout. "Mommy, why are all these people here?"
Almost as if she expected that, Bakugo then clapped his hands before yelling at the group and causing everyone to stop what they were doing immediately. "Oi! Shut the hell up. It's time already you extras!"
And that's when the whole room turned dark before Todoroki entered the space with a large white cake as Amari walked over and used the last remaining bit of her quirk to light the candles with a small spark.
Toya and Ayumi's mouths dropped open with excitement and wonder and the shining flame as Amari couldn't help but giggle under her breath. "You didn't think we'd forget your birthday, did we?"
Widening their eyes at the realization, the two kids let their mouths hang open as the large cake was placed in front of them, the two not being able to read the words that said. HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY TOYA AND AYUMI
Clapping her hands together, Amari then pointed to the candles before speaking. "Well come on, what are you waiting for? Make a wish, you two."
The two twins then looked at each other before doing what they were told as loud applause filled the space a moment later, causing Endeavor to watch with careful eyes.
Maybe it was just his mind playing tricks on him but their child looked an awful like his son that had passed away, even down to the red hair and outspoken attitude. In fact the only thing that was different was the little boys piercing red eyes like his mother.
Even then he first met the child it was as if he was looking straight into the past, in some twisted way it was like he was meeting his son for the first time all over again. He knew he wasn't the only one that probably noticed it either.
The fact that Shoto and Amari's child reminded him so much of who Toya used to be.
But then he watched as the little boy's face turned up into a joyous smile, causing Endeavor to watch him with hidden shame. His son never used to smile like that, not once had he seen his Toya make that kind of expression.
Lowering his eyes sadly, the hero then recalled a time when his oldest son asked him for a birthday party with his siblings but back then Endeavor was so focused on revenge and being number one that he only turned him away.
And maybe it was some kind of crazy trick, maybe he was losing his mind but seeing the little red haired boy take a large bite of cake with everyone around him, it almost felt like his son was finally getting the life he always deserved.
Perhaps they were the same person, perhaps some kind of crazy fate had brought him back into Endeavor's life but whatever the reason was, he was thankful to see that small child so happy.
So much so that Amari just barely saw her trainers lips curve into a warm smile before Todoroki began to wrap her arms around her waist and pull her closer to him. "Amari, thank you for giving me everything I never thought I could have."
The girl then looked over the group of people before her, feeling the absolute love and admiration in the room, of all the people that cared about her, of all the people that helped her succeed.
Amari then locked eyes with her brother as they shared an unsaid conversation of a thousand words before Katsuki gave her a silent nod of approval, silently telling her that he was proud of how far she had come.
Her eyes then focused on Toya's old ring before letting her lips curve into a small smile, knowing that none of this would have happened without his sacrifice, without him wholeheartedly believe she could be saved
That's right, she was worthy enough to be saved.
Thank you Toya, for forever. I promise. You will never be forgotten.
Amari then turned towards the party before her before snuggling into her husband and feeling truly happy for the first time in her life as a sudden realization crossed her mind.
It may have started with Her Reasons
And the path may have gotten misunderstood and twisted by His Reasons
But now, she has finally understood that isn't wasn't ever about either of those. It was never about which one was valid, about which was right. Because the funny part was, Katsuki and Amari, they were both wrong. They were so incredibly wrong.
The only thing that ever mattered were their reasons, together.
END
Wow. It's over. I'll write more in the thank you but wow…
Also thank you to the user AtsumiTanaka on QouteV for helping me pick a wonderful female name for Ayumi. I love that it means "to walk your own destiny." so I decided to use it. :)
I know the reasons for Amari having to loose her quirk is kinda strange, especially with the whole "each parents gives them a peice of thier quirk" given that quirkless kids exsist but shhh it's fanfic, I can bend the rules. We will just say that the process is different for kids born without quirks.
Also it's left up to interpretation about Amari's kid but it could be read as Toya is past Toya reincarnated, giving him the love and family he always wanted. I would like to think that though, cause it's cute.
Also can we talk about how Amari at the begging on this story would have never given up her quirk. I'm so proud. *cries*
I hope this was both a good sad and happy ending for you all 3
