Chapter 121 [Kent Farm]
Clark raked out a stall that morning. He still floated on Cloud 9. Despite his usual aversion to art stuff, the music and poetry grabbed his attention. He caught up with Sam and Pete. He enjoyed spending time with Lana. His arm felt great. The weather forecast for the Astronomy workshop looked clear. The wedding cake melted in his mouth.
Don't wake me up if this is a dream! He sped through his chores. Maybe he'd practice with the flying afterwards. He might go to the Talon and talk to Lana.
"Got a minute, Son?"
Clark set the pitchfork down. He felt the air coming of that balloon. "Sure, Dad. Some day yesterday. Huh?"
"Those two have had to overcome a lot. I hope their friend's all right." Jonathan looked at Clark's arm. "Your arm looks good."
"That was scary, Dad. I mean Mr. Arighatto wasn't here. Then he just was." Clark turned toward the stairs. "Then Peter stepped in. He gave me time to get away."
"We're fortunate in that regard, Clark. You helped him at the school a few weeks ago. He did the same for you here. Thank you for making sure your mother was all right. What happened with Lana?" Jonathan looked him in the eye.
"Dad, given everything's that happened in the last few weeks…even this year…I wanted to make that commitment. It's not like what happened with Alicia. We didn't run off to Vegas. We agreed to wait until after high school. I gave her the bracelet. It didn't do anything to Kyla. It affected Lana differently because she is the person. It's not like Jor-El forced me. It felt right. I care about the farm. I love Lana. She loves me. Now she and I are alike and we can be together." Clark rubbed the back of his neck.
"You better hope that remains the case. I know Lana and you have cared about each other since you were kids. Things change between high school and college. People grow in different directions. You might want something else." Jonathan sighed.
"I know, Dad. But again, it feels right. I'm not using it as an excuse to do anything. We respect that." Clark shrugged. Of course, he wanted to be with Lana in that regard as well but knew better with his parents.
"That's why your mother and I are going along with this. I'm glad to hear you two are mature enough not to test us on that point. It's only another year. You should have your diploma at least. Lana is going to need our help. What happened on Friday is one example. You've had enough situations like that yourself. She is going to need your experience, patience and love, Son, to adjust. I was talking to Gabe Sullivan. He says congratulations by the way." Jonathan drank from his coffee mug. "Just think about it. Let's finish up in here. Then we can find something else."
Clark nodded to himself. At least the parents accepted the engagement. Somethings weren't so bad after all….
