"Are you sure you know how to drive this, Uncle Jumba?" Lilo asked worriedly.
"Know how to drive?" Jumba laughed. "Primitive Earth vehicle is nothing like giant space ship. This will be being piece of cake." As he said that, he changed gears and the small school buss lurched forward slightly. He could see Lilo's concern out of the corner of his eye. He cleared his throat and tried again, this time with more success. "Will just be taking a bit to get used to, eh?"
As much as she was concerned over the well being of them reaching their destination, she was much more concerned with the rowdy experiment children making a commotion throughout the rest of the bus. Running, jumping, and shouting rocked the bus just as badly as Jumba's driving. Lilo took a deep breath, knowing that they would soon get to their destination and Stitch would be there to help. Neither one of them liked looking after the entire class on their own. But some times it had to be done.
"Alright, alright," she addressed her students. "Time to calm down now." She waited a moment as she scanned the class. "Psy, whatever that is please put it down."
"Okay..." he said, hiding the small device under his long, blue ear, rather than back in his bag.
Content that she had them under some form of control, Lilo decided to begin their first field trip.
"So does anyone know where we are going?" she asked, and quickly a variety of paws shot into the air. She quickly decided on one. "Reverb, how about you?"
The small koala like experiment with orange and yellow fur with white patches quickly lowered their hand. Without thinking, they repeated the word 'you' over and over with varying sound effects from their round red ears. A rather new addition to the class, Reverb was Noise and Sample's child. And while their ability to repeat sounds they hear wasn't the most destructive ability, them being unable to control it caused some problems.
After shaking their head they looked around the class and said, "Sorry..."
"It's okay," she assured him. "Please continue."
"We are going to look at some 'one-true-places' today," they said with confidence.
"That's right." she smiled as she saw how happy they were to have been correct. "When Stitch and I were first finding the activated experiments, it was our job to find their one-true-place. A home where they could use their abilities for good instead of evil and live happily ever after. Some examples we learned were how experiment six-two-six 'Stitch' is with me. Or experiment two-two-one 'Sparky' is at the light house."
As Lilo continued her explanation, the bus slowly made it's way into town. Jumba was getting used to the 'primitive' Earth vehicle fairly quickly. And along the way he considered some upgrades that could be made to it. But they smoothly found their way to one of the beaches, where a specific experiment waited with Stitch.
"Okay, Class," Lilo said once they were all settled. "This is Slushy." Slushy gave a little wave to the kids. "He is an experiment that can create snow. When he was activated, he turned the entire island into a winter wonderland." Stitch shivered as he remembered. Even if he was okay with snow now, it was still not so fun to begin with. "While it seemed alright at first, going through a sudden disastrous weather change like that in a place that isn't built for it is really bad."
Slushy gave a small demonstration. Blowing snow up into the air, making beautiful crystal shapes before they slowly fell to the ground and began melting. It was nice to let go a little and really let his powers shine. The kids were absolutely amazed, and the way the light reflected different colours before their eyes only added to the wonderful display.
"Once he was turned good-" Lilo walked forward, grabbing one of the paper cones "we found his one-true-place at a local shop. Making snow cones." Slushy quickly blew a small ball of snow on the cone and then quickly poured some syrup. "Everyone can of course get one."
The kids were screaming with joy as they each got their iced treat. Once they were all settled and eating though it was time to continue.
"Why do we find a one-true-place for cousins?" Stitch asked the class.
Monty quickly raised his hand and said, "so they can be themselves and be happy?"
"Ih," Stitch nodded. "But also no."
Ava raised her hand this time and waited to be called on.
"It was an agreement with the Grand Councilwoman, right?" she asked. "Turning them good and finding where they belong so there wouldn't be an evacuation?"
"Correct."
Dusk lifted his head from his bowl of ice and looked to his two siblings, his spotted face drooping a bit.
"What if you can't find a true place with your abilities?" he asked sadly.
"Everyone has somewhere they belong," said Lilo.
"Some cousins are with human companions," Stitch added. "Much like yuuga's parents."
He seemed content with this answer and went back to licking up his shaved ice.
"None of you have to worry about finding a one-true-place though if you don't want," Lilo said while taking some of the garbage from the kids that were finished. "That was only necessary for the original six hundred and twenty six experiments. You are all different. A new generation. You are free to live your lives as you see fit. True place or not."
The smartest of the group, Jaq, raised her hand. Once there was a moment Stitch called on her.
"What about now though?" she asked. "Now that aliens are able to come to Earth, there are certain rules and regulations. Wouldn't that affect the agreement with the original experiments?"
"Naga," Stitch said. "Aliens are all about rules. This isa rule made by the Grand Council. It must be adhered to."
Everyone seemed satisfied with the answer except Jaq. But she didn't press on it any further. It was just the start of their field trip. And she didn't want to cause any problems during it.
Meanwhile, Pitch was hiding up in a tree. While his fur certainly clashed against the bright greens of the leaves, he was sure that the shadows were keeping him concealed. Not far, just within earshot, a girl with short black hair sat by herself on a bench. She huffed in sadness and frustration. Just staring at her cellphone. Her thumb hovered over 'send message' for a moment before she deleted the whole thing and threw her phone in her pocket.
Before she had a chance to get up and walk away her eyes caught another girl walking towards her. For a moment she was caught staring at her long brown ponytail and the sway of her yellow skirt. After catching herself, she looked away with a huff. The girl however sat down beside her.
"Hey, Marie," the girl with the ponytail said. Her eyes shifted towards the girl, but she kept facing the street ahead. "How are you doing?"
"Fine," Marie said angrily. "How are you, Sasha?"
Sasha's lips turned a little bit into a smile.
"I'm doing okay."
There was a long moment between them. Just sitting in a silence that was speaking volumes between them. A history that they both wanted to get out. Marie's heart was racing. Even though she was angry she could feel Sasha's hand just a hairs width from hers and she wanted so badly to just grab it. But she couldn't. She was still mad at her. It would have been better if she just left. She made a slight move to stand up but Sasha grabbed her hand and her whole world stopped.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm sorry for what I said. It was dumb, and I shouldn't have. You deserve so much better than me."
Marie quickly forced herself to breath, realizing she had stopped at some point. A swirl of emotions filling her, making her dizzy. She could feel the heat from Sasha's hand and it was like it was completely engulfing her. She wanted so badly to say something. Anything. But all the words were caught in her throat. She wanted an apology, and here it was. Why was she freezing up? She turned to look at Sasha finally and she was stuck in place.
Sasha could see her eyes go wide and wondered what had happened. She turned around to look and also found herself frozen. Standing not too far away was someone that looked exactly like her. Down to the minor details, holding a flower. And panic shot through her.
The other Sasha stared at the two for a moment. Not entirely sure what was going on. And the hand holding the flower fell. She quickly ran towards them, grabbing Marie's hand and pulling her up, standing between the two of them.
"Get away from her!" said the new Sasha. "Who are you?"
The first Sasha just let out a little laugh as all the colour in her body faded to gray. And like the skin was peeling back within a moment a small orange experiment was in her place. The two girls just screamed and jumped back.
"Sorry," Poser said before running off.
She didn't look back. Didn't dare. She just wanted to get out of there as soon as she could. In her mind she half expected Rewind to take them back suddenly. But she knew she wouldn't even know all of this happened if that was the case. He wasn't there. It was just Poser and herself. And even when they were trying to help others, it wasn't going as well as it used to. Without a reset button, mistakes happen and you have to deal with them. There's always consequences. But it made her feel scared, panicked, and just generally have a sense of loneliness.
At some point she had stopped running. Feeling like she was on the verge of crying. A soft hand rested on her shoulder and she immediately turned around and sobbed into Pitch's shoulder.
"That was terrible!" she cried.
"Hey now," he said while rubbing her back. "You didn't get to see but after you left they had a moment together and it looks like things are going to work out." This didn't stop his love from crying though. "The plan was ultimately a success."
"But we didn't even need to do anything."
"W-well no. I-I guess not."
"It's just not the same without Rewind."
There was nothing Pitch could really say to that. It was true. Without their friend these little missions and pranks just didn't feel the same. It wasn't just being able to undo mistakes. There wasn't as much fun or life in it. And even if he got an idea, they weren't as bold or good as they were before. He never really realized how important them being a trio really was. Not until now.
"S-sometimes," Poser said between gasps. "Sometimes I wish..."
"What?" Pitch grabbed her shoulders and moved her to look into her eyes. "That we didn't get together?"
Poser shifted slightly. Moving her eyes away from his.
"N-no. Of course not," she said. But her voice betrayed her slightly. "I love you. You know I do. It's just that..."
"That if we didn't he would still be here," Poser simply said. No emotion in his voice. "I know. I think about it a lot." He took a deep breath. "Blame myself a lot."
"You can't blame yourself!" she said as she looked back at him. And when she did she saw that he too was crying.
"Is this our punishment?" he asked. "We can happily be in love but we lose our friend and just can't ever escape this pain?"
It was a question both of the experiments would ask themselves a lot late a night. When the darkness and quiet would take hold. They could think back to all the fun times the three of them had together. But even in the all the happiness and love, that guilt was there.
Poser leaned up and pressed her lips against his. Sharing a kiss while the two of them cried over their shared pain and grief. They could never deny their feelings for each other. But actions have consequences. Sometimes it's not even the actions you mean to take, or it's the actions of others. They could never blame Rewind for what he did. In the end he sacrificed himself for their sake. But they still miss and care for him. And that was something they were trying to live with. Something they couldn't do anything about. So they kissed. Holding strongly onto their love and passion that so much was lost just so it could exist.
"Dummy."
To finish off their field trip, Lilo and Stitch took the kids to a foster home. For a couple of hours the experiment kids and human kids played around and enjoyed each others company. As a way to show that not only is co-existence possible and should be worked towards. But to show the experiment children that don't have what would be considered 'useful' abilities that they too can find companionship and a place to belong if it's what they so choose for themselves later.
The day honestly couldn't have gone any better. She was happy that they all stayed engaged and most of the group had questions that both she and Stitch were happy to answer.
"Turned out great didn't it?" Lilo asked as she looked out onto the yard with all the kids running and playing.
"Naga nota," Stitch said. "You kinda dropped the ball at Clip's demonstration"
"Hey," she said, elbowing him in the side. "At least I didn't knock over an entire display of fruit at Mrs. Hasegawa's."
"That's fair," he laughed. "Naga. Whole day was fun and good."
"Yeah."
They continued to watch as the fun was had. Soon they would have to get everyone home and hope that they didn't get blamed for how excited all of them would be. There was no way this energy was going to die down before then. Her eyes continued to scan over them all when they caught sight of someone they did not expect.
At the end of the yard, looking out over the small fence was Lea. Wearing a regular hoodie that she had her hands tucked in the pockets of. Just staring at her. Not angrily. Just watching. Lilo was slightly worried, but with Stitch's hand in hers they both made their way to the unexpected guest. As they got closer she could tell something was different about Lea. She didn't seem quite as put together as she normally was.
"It's weird knowing they're aliens," Lea said once Lilo was close enough. "Always thought they were just weird animals. It's kind of hard to get used to."
"It's been a challenge for a lot of people. Kind of a big change," Lilo responded. She was unsure of what to expect.
"So what is this anyway?"
"A field trip."
"Field trip?"
"Yeah," Lilo said while nodding. "We kind of run a school for the kids of the alien's on the island."
"Is that a part of your, you know? Ambassador duties or whatever?"
"No," Lilo laughed. "Just something I kind of had an idea to do. It's been hard. But fun at the same time."
Lea gave a small response. Really just beating around the bush still. It was weird coming to your enemy. Were they enemies? She wasn't really sure anymore. The technically fought for a long time but was that actually over now? She figured it basically was, but still. This was just weird and awkward. She could tell Lilo felt the same. Their eyes didn't really meet unless they were talking. And the way she and the blue alien were fidgeting made it clear she was starting to put them on edge. And then she noticed that they were holding hands.
"What's up with that?" she asked.
Lilo followed her gaze and realized what she was pointing out.
"Oh," she said while blushing. "Um. Stitch is my boyfriend."
"Stitch?"
"Meega, Stitch," he said with somewhat of a wave. They never really were formally introduced.
Lea figured she should have been shocked by this. That that would be the normal reaction. But if she was honest with herself she just didn't really feel anything at all. Maybe that was in part to getting some rough sleep on a couch recently. Or maybe just nothing surprised her anymore. It at least some what explained why she always saw them together.
"What happened to Styles?" Lea asked. "Tired of just a regular guy?"
"That was meega," Stitch said.
Lilo could see the look of confusion on her face and added, "Styles was just a disguise so Stitch could fit in. But now people know about aliens so we don't need it anymore."
And then Lea burst out laughing. It added to the tension in the air. But it actually made her feel a bit better.
"Sorry," she said. "It's not really funny or anything. Just kind of made a lot of things make sense. Like everything just fell into place you know?" It took a moment for her to regain herself. "You were a pretty cute human though."
"I think he looks even cuter as alien," Lilo cut in before Stitch could give a response.
Lea just nodded. She thought back to when she kicked the two of them out of her mom's restaurant. The 'no aliens' sign and everything. Mostly just her mom's idea and plan. But she felt some satisfaction back then in it. She wasn't sure how she felt about it now. Especially when watching children playing.
"Anyway. Before I overstay my welcome. I came to give you a warning."
"A warning?" Lilo asked. She could feel Stitch tense up and start to move between them, but she kept him back. "Is Sam going to try something?"
"No," Lea said with a chuckle. "Sam hasn't really been into anything like that lately. No it's my mom. She tried to get all the aliens to lose their homes a while back. But some Jameson guy stopped her."
"That was your mom?"
"Yeah. A charming lady I can assure you. Anyway. She decided she's not done. Got some big lawyer or something from the mainland here." Her eyes darted towards the alien kids playing and having fun in the yard. "She's trying to get them all kicked off the island. And since you clearly care about them. I just thought I'd tell you."
"Why yuuga tell us?" Stitch asked with concern.
"Because as much as I don't like you," she said while nodding towards Lilo. "I really don't like my mom. She kicked me out after a fight. Guess I want to get back at her."
"Do you need a place to stay?" Lilo asked. As much as she didn't like the things Lea has done. She couldn't just let someone be without a home.
Lea just smirked. Both surprised and not.
"No, I'm good." There was a pause. "You were always good at messing up our plans. So I just want you to mess up hers. Mess them up real good."
