One and Only

Another case was solved for Intelligence and that made Deputy Superintendent Miller happy. Hank was in his office and was about to head home when Sam had shown up. She sat down on the sofa.

"Good job today, Sergeant."

"Thanks."

"Do you ever do anything besides work?"

"Why?"

"Just wondering. I know you're widowed and you lost your only son. Do you ever think about dating again?"

"That's really no one's business but mine."

"You're to the point. I really like that about you."

"Are you by any chance trying to come on to me? I don't get involved with anyone that could make or break my career and you're pretty much my boss anyway. If you'll excuse me, I need to go."

Hank grabbed his coat and left, leaving Sam still sitting in his office. She wanted any excuse to spend more time with the handsome Sergeant. She knew he had a reputation but she knew he got the job done no matter what it was. Something on Hank's desk had caught her eye. It was a picture of him with and woman and a curly haired boy from this last Christmas. Did Hank Voight have someone in his life? The woman did look familiar to her. She left and headed back to her office. Hank arrived at the house and went in. He found something for dinner and ate. He then decided to go to Molly's. He went over to the car

He arrived and went in. Not too many people from Intelligence were there yet and there weren't a lot of people there from 51 other than Severide, Casey, Cruz and Mouch. He was ok with that. He went to sit down and then Stella brought him a Manhattan.

"Here you go, Sarge."

"Thanks, Kidd."

"No problem."

Kelly came over to see him.

"Hey, Voight."

"Hey."

"Have you talked to Erin lately?"

"I talk to her at least a couple times a week."

"The next time you talk to her, tell her I said hi."

"I will."

Kelly went back over to the bar and flirted with Stella. Then Sam came in. She took it upon herself to go sit with Hank.

"May I join you?"

"I'm not really in the mood for company."

"So, who's the woman?"

"What woman?"

"The one in the picture on your desk. Was that your wife?"

"Nope."

"Girlfriend?"

"I already told you that my personal life is no one's business but mine."

Stella had come over to find out what Sam wanted to drink and then she went to get it for her.

"I like a man that plays hard to get."

"I'm not playing hard to get."

The guys were sitting at the bar and noticed that Hank was very uncomfortable.

"Poor Voight."

"Yeah, really. I hope Olivia gets here soon."

"Does he know she's coming?"

"Nope. Trudy has noticed that Deputy Superintendent Miller has been spending quite a bit of time at the 21st. She kind of figured there might be more to it and she was right. They haven't seen each other too much since Christmas. It's probably hard for them being in two different cities."

"True. I guess they're not making any wedding plans until they decide who will make the switch. My guess will be him."

"No doubt. She has a lot more responsibility than he does. Who takes over if he leaves? Any idea?"

"I think Halstead."

"That's good to know, since we do work with them quite a bit."

"Yep. Deputy Superintendent Miller is pretty though."

"Ok."

"Captain Benson is more his type though."

"True."

The rest of 51 and Intelligence except Kim arrived and joined the guys at the bar. Everyone got their drinks and watched what was going on between Hank and Sam.

"Dang! She's brave."

"I'm guessing he's not going to tell her he's with someone. We're lucky he told us. Platt is on her way to get Benson at the airport?"

"Yep."

"Does Benson know why Platt asked her to come here?"

"Oh yeah. She does."

"Miller has been spending quite a bit of time at the 21st. Now we know why. I don't trust her. I don't always trust Voight either but he's been really supportive since I lost my dad and he trusts me enough to leave me in charge of the unit when he goes to New York."

"It's obvious he hasn't been the same since Olinsky died."

"None of us have. I think a part of that is guilt but Olinsky would have done that for any of us. That's just who he was. Erin blames herself for what happened to Olinsky too. Let's face it, Voight would do anything for any of us too."

"That's true."

"When Kim lost the baby, he was very supportive."

"How's she doing with Makayla?"

"Good. Makayla is a good kid. Man, poor Voight. He looks so damn uncomfortable over there. Should we do somethin'?"

"Trudy texted me a little bit ago and said they're on their way."

Hank was getting antsy and wanted to leave. He knew everyone was watching him. His heart completely belonged to Olivia. What if she found out about this? She'd break off their engagement for sure and he didn't want to risk that.

"Something wrong, Sergeant? Do I make you uncomfortable?"

"Kind of. You're my boss."

"I find you attractive Hank. Is there something wrong with that?"

"Look, if it makes any difference, I am in a relationship with someone and I am completely devoted to her. I'm a one woman at a time kind of guy and Olivia is my one and only. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be doing this job, since she's in New York. I'm sure I'll be the one that makes the move."

"She can't move here?"

"She has a lot more responsibility with her job than I do."

"What does she do?"

"She's also a cop but she's a Captain. She heads the Special Victims Unit in Manhattan."

"Wait a minute, you are involved with Olivia Benson?"

"Yep."

Then Olivia came in with Trudy. Olivia went over to Hank and kissed him.

"You're here."

"I am. You must be Deputy Superintendent Miller. I'm Captain Olivia Benson, Hank's fiancé."

"I know who you are. Wait, did you say fiancé?"

"Yep.

Olivia took her jacket off and sat down. Her left hand was on the table with her engagement ring on full display. Hank then put his arm around Olivia.

"Everyone calls me Sam by the way."

"You wouldn't be trying to come on to my fiancée, would you, Sam?"

"You don't seem like the jealous type though."

"He's not into that and he wouldn't become involved romantically with someone who could ruin his career. I know I'm his one and only."

"What makes you think I would ruin his career?"

"You're his boss. I do know how the higher ups operate. They're all the same no matter which Department you're with. I dated someone with Internal Affairs a few years ago, so I know Hank isn't like me. I'm not sure I was thinking clearly at the time and I was also trying to deny my real feelings for Hank. I cared for Ed but a part of me knew he wasn't the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with."

"Are you two still close since you broke up?"

"Honestly, I hadn't seen him in 3 years. He invited me to his retirement party and that's when I found out he had gotten married. He told me he had brain cancer and committed suicide over a year ago. I wouldn't have gotten through that without Hank."

"I am so sorry. I had heard on the news about all the cop suicides within the NYPD. We've had our share here too."

"Thank you."

"Listen, I may have come on a little strong with Hank. I know he has a reputation but for some reason, I find him easier to talk to than I do most people. I won't deny that I do find him very attractive as well."

"He's not used to getting all this attention from multiple women. I'm one of the few people who has seen the more vulnerable side of him. The tough guy exterior doesn't fool me."

"I know about the Denny Woods situation and what happened with Kevin Bingham and Alvin Olinsky."

"Do you have kids?"

"No, I don't but I understand why you did what you did."

"I blame myself every day for what happened to Olinsky and my heart really isn't in my job anymore. I come to work because I have to, do what I have to to get the job done and I go home. I look forward to my time with Olivia and Noah because they're my reason for being alive. Olivia is the one that got me through what I was feeling after Olinsky died and she was here for Justin's funeral. Noah is my second chance to be better father. The father I should have been to Justin."

"How old is Noah?"

"He's 8 and he loves to dance. He was into baseball for a while but he got bored. He decided he wanted to try dancing and he is actually quite good."

"You're divorced?"

"I've never been married. I adopted him on my own after fostering him for a year. I've always wanted to be a mother but apparently I was never meant to have a biological child. I would have loved to have experienced it once."

"I followed the William Lewis case. That guy was a psycho."

"Yes, he was. I wish I had known Hank then."

"How long have you and Hank actually known each other?"

"We met working on a case in late 2014. We didn't start out on the right foot because of his behavior in the Interrogation Room, which reminded me a lot of my former partner. By the time the case was over, we learned to respect each other. After that, we worked on the Yates' case together too. That was from something I had worked on a decade earlier. When the case had gotten to trial, that was actually when I started realizing I had feelings for Hank. Yates started saying some horrible things about Hank and that really upset me. I just didn't know how to bring it up and I also didn't think something long distance would work. I was wrong about that but we both get busy and sometimes we don't have time to see each other. This is the first we've seen each other in person since Christmas/New Year's0. We Skype all the time but it's just not the same. We tried getting together for Valentine's Day but neither of us could get away. I'm hoping we can do something about that soon. I'm ready to get married whenever he is."

"I know it'll be me who relocates. I think I'm ready to give this all up completely and focus on being a dad to Noah."

"I'm just happy to know that you'd be willing to give up your life here for me and for Noah. Now maybe we can get serious about the wedding."

"I vote for just doing it and getting it over with. I don't know that I want to wait. Just the family. You, me, Erin, Olive and the boys. I'll be by on Monday morning to put my papers in. I just want to talk to them first."

"That works for me but our squads are family too."

"Yeah, I know."

"Who takes over?"

"Detective Halstead."

Hank motioned for the squad to come over to their table.

"What's goin' on, Boss?"

"I've decided to put my papers in and retire. These last couple years have been hard on all of us but I know I need to be where Olivia is."

"So, you're retiring?"

"Yep."

"No, Ruzek, he's going to start over with the NYPD. Seriously, you can be such an idiot sometimes."

"You know what, Jay, shut the hell up!"

"You do know that once Voight retires, I'll be in charge of the unit, right?"

"Yeah, I know. You seem to have to remind us of that quite a bit."

"Someone has to. Sarge, I think I'm ready to take over."

"Good."

"Detective, have you thought about taking the Sergeant's exam?"

"Actually, no, I haven't."

"At least think about it."

"I will."

"Hank, can we go? It's been a really long day for me."

"Yeah, sure. Halstead, you're in charge unless you really need me for something."

"Got it."

Hank and Olivia both got up and Hank helped Olivia with her jacket before putting his own jacket on. He took her hand and then they left. Trudy went out with them, so Olivia could get her stuff. The rest of the squad went back to where they were sitting, while Sam decided to head home as well. Hank arrived at the house and took Olivia's bag inside. Hank locked up and they took their jackets off. They headed upstairs and started kissing.

"I have missed you so much."

"I have missed you too."

They headed towards the bed as they undressed each other as they kissed. They got on the bed and then made love. Afterwards Hank had his arms wrapped around her and she had her head on his chest.

"I'm glad you showed up when you did."

"I'm glad Trudy called me. She said Sam has been hanging around the District a lot."

"Now I know why. My heart belongs to you and only you. It has for a long time."

"The same with me. It's longer than I'm willing to admit. How much notice are you giving them?"

"30 days."

"Should we look for something bigger?"

"I've been looking online."

"I have too actually."

They both got out of bed and put some clothes on. Olivia went into the bathroom, while Hank turned on the laptop and found the site he had been looking at. Then Olivia came out and he showed them to her. She started laughing because most of them she had been looking at were the same ones.

"It's good to know we're on the same page with this, since we like the same places. We're obviously going to be paying a lot because it's New York."

"Yeah, I know."

Hank went into the bathroom and finished getting ready for bed. Olivia said she would contact a Realtor and set something up. He said to let him know, so he could make arrangements to come out. Hank shut off his laptop and then he and Olivia went to bed. Just as it always did, the weekend went by quickly but at least they had been able to spend a few days together. Pretty soon they'd be together all the time.
