This idea has been stewing for years... enjoy.
Kaia shivered in the cold of the South Pole's frigid winds as she brought her haul towards the encampment where the rest of the village lay. Carefully looking in each direction, she put her hands close to her face and breathed out, causing a steady stream of flames to appear, warming her up considerably. She enjoyed the feeling for only a moment before stopping her power and continuing her walk towards the Village.
"I bring goodies." She said, getting the attention of Grangran, their current leader since the rest of the people were gone. The women appraoched her kindly, as she always did and reached out, grasping her hands.
"You are too kind. We would never do as well without your generosity my dear."
From her back, Kaia pulled off the large pouch and placed it on the ground. "I have a fourty dried fish, some dired seal blubber and a few sea prunes. I hope it helps."
"It always does. Sokka and Katara brought back no fish..." Her voice went low and she leaned in, her eyes squinting with worry. " However they brought back a boy, one that caused that light show we saw just the day before. He has airbender tattoos and is very young. I worry. Can you monitor him while you are here and if he becomes a threat, take care of him?"
Kaia went cold, but nodded. "Anything for you, Gran." She embraced the older women as warmly as she could, but even as she did this Kaia mentally prepared herself for the act of murder. She had done it before, and she would do it again if she needed too...
Just like with her mother, she would not let anyone endanger these people who had so kindly taken her in and raised her as their own. The SouthPole, while not perfect, was her home and she would defend it from all intruders.
""
"Aang, this is the entire village. Entire village, Aang." Katara, the sweet girl she was, had all but dragged out a small boy Kaia presumed was Aang. He was a cute kid, covered in Tattoos as GranGran had said, dressed in oranges and yellows, he had a strange staff in his hand.
Bowing low, Aang seemed to radiate a sense of peace and tranquility that so few others did. Kaia realized she liked him already and that made it harder to have to kill him, so she struggled to put that feeling away.
"Ugh, why are they all looking at me like that." Aang asked. "Did Appa sneeze on me again?"
Kaia walked forward. "No one's seen an Airbender for a century, we thought they were killed off when the Firenation attacked them."
Grangran came forth next. "Until my grandaughter and grandson found you."
"Extinct?" Aang's confusion was... well, confusing to Kaia. She wondered how long he was in that iceburg... how could he not know.
When Katara gestured to Grangran and Kaia, it drew the young firebender back to her body. " Aang, this is my grandmother."
"Call me Gran-Gran."
"And this is Kaia, she's a huge help around her. Catches most of our food and is our best warrior since the men left."
"I resent that, she's a girl!" Sokka the sexist pig he was had to run his mouth, making Kaia glare at him. The boy backed up a little, afraid of her.
Not amused, Kaia turned to Aang. "If you don't mind me asking, what's that staff for?"
Excited, the cute boy began to babble. "It's for airbending. "Suddenly he opened his staff into what seemed to be a glider, making Sokka gasp in fright and cover his head with his hands. Kaia gaped in amazement at the sight, it was epic.
Mio, a village girl, screeched a little. "Magic trick! Do it again!"
"Not magic, airbending."The silly boy began to move his glider around him, visually demonstrating what he is talking about." It lets me control the air currents around my glider and fly."
Sokka had to mock the boy. "Ya know, last time I checked, humans can't fly!"
Aang smirked. "Check again!" Aang grabs hold of his glider and pushed himself off the ground, leaving them alll cover their faces against the sudden wind. The village and Kaia all stared in awe as Aang makes some loops and turns in the sky.
"He's flying!"
Aang makes another loops and speeds up to soar past the gazing villagers.
"It's amazing!"
Unfortunately that all ended when He promptly flew head-on into the village's watchtower, causing his head to be stuck in its side. Aang struggled to escape from tower. Succeeding, he tumbles downward onto a pile of snow at the base of the tower that crumbled from the building. Katara immediately rushed to his side while Sokka stared in shock at the damage inflicted on his watchtower.
"My watchtower!"
Aang lies covered in snow at the base of the partially collapsed tower. Katara and some other girls of the tribe run toward Aang, smiling. Kaia stood back, content to be more of an observer for the time being.
Katara gaped at the boy. "That was amazing!
Sokka ran toward his watchtower and started to pat it in the hope that he can save it from collapsing any further. While Aang spins his staff around to retract its wings, Sokka is knocked down by a large pack of snow that falls down. Kaia broke out laughing, enjoying the boy's comeuppance. He deserved it.
"Great. You're an airbender, Katara's a waterbender. Together you can just waste time all day long."
Aang looked amazed. "You're a waterbender?"
Katara got nervous, as she tended to do. "Well, sort of. Not yet."
"All right, no more playing." Grangran said, as she moved towards the duo. "Come on, Katara, you have chores."
"So,.. what's a firenation girl doing here?" Kaia cringed when those words left Aang's mouth.
With lighting fast reflexes she grabbed his shoulder and led him away, making him cringe at her strength. When they were far enough, she kneeled down. " Never reveal that... I could be exiled for being firenation... how did you know?"
"I've traveled all over the world, I know firenation when I see it. Your darker then normal, but your definitly firenation. Black hair, grey eyes, sharp nose, yup all firenation. Plus your really warm, I can feel your body heat from here, so I'm guessing your a Firebender?" Aang tipped his head, looking confused. " Why would they banish you for that?"
"The war and... never mind... just don't say a word, okay?"
"Sure, I guess..."
She could only hope he would keep her word.
