Jason instantly grabbed Kara's hand, pulling her back, as the hooded figure stepped out of the cellar doors, a grim expression on their face. Kara kept her eyes on the gun the whole time, squeezing Jason's hand, fear coursing through her veins. Spencer was the first one to speak up once she had regained her speech from the shock of seeing the person standing in their way of freedom.
"Melissa?" Spencer gaped, watching as her sister ushered for them all to take a step back.
"Spence, get behind me. Now" Melissa ordered, gripping the gun tightly in her hand.
"You're in on this too?" Kara all but groaned, growing tired of the amount of betrayal's they were facing.
"Always have been" Melissa retorted, holding out her hand to her sister, who looked at the offered limb apprehensively.
It didn't take long for Spencer to make her decision, rushing over to Melissa, as the rest of the girls went to follow. Melissa turned to them instantly, now training her gun on her sister's friends. It was clear she wasn't bluffing.
"Just Spencer" Melissa exclaimed, as Spencer's forehead wrinkled.
"B-but we can't leave them—" Spencer began, but Melissa cut her off quickly.
"I'm doing this for you, Spence. I need you to trust me" Melissa told her, pushing Spencer behind her.
"…It'll be a lot easier to prove Spencer as a victim if no one else is around to contradict that, right?" Kara guessed as Melissa's lips twitched into a smirk.
"You always were a little too smart for your own good, Kara" Melissa scoffed.
"You'd let all of us die just to protect your Spencer?" Jason muttered, the disgust clear in his tone.
"I'd do anything for my sister. Haven't you figured that out by now?" Melissa replied.
"Bloods thicker than water, huh?" Kara huffed, as Melissa shrugged dismissively.
"Something like that…where's Aria?" Melissa frowned, realizing she wasn't with the group.
"She's busy cooking in the other room. You're welcome to go look for her if you want" Kara mumbled, sarcastically.
"And Ezra? They're both still alive?" Melissa questioned, fear flashing across her face for just a second.
Kara simply nodded, gritting her teeth as Melissa reached down to shut the cellar doors, still standing in between their way out. The air was growing thicker with smoke by the second. If they were going to escape it was now or never…
"Looks like I have one more mess to clean up then" Melissa announced, taking the safety off the gun, her intentions clear.
"Aren't you working for Ezra?" Alison queried, as Melissa took a step forward.
"I used to…" Melissa trailed off, her lips drawn into a firm line.
"The N.A.T club" Jason realised; his mouth gone slack.
"He took over when he became a teacher at Rosewood. And my, my…some of the things we caught on camera" Melissa scoffed, as Kara ran a hand through his hair.
"That was how he got all his money. He set men up and blackmailed them. Those videos of the Kahn barn we found…" Kara gaped.
"He helped to hone our craft. Before Ezra got involved we only filmed the neighbour's houses…and our own, of course" Melissa explained, as a realization hit Alison.
"…You knew? There was a tape of us…killing Bethany?" Alison questioned, a horrified look in her eyes.
"I had to play dumb for years, carrying that secret around. Why do you think I pretended I was the one to kill Bethany? Because I knew who the real killers were" Melissa went on.
"That's why all the N.A.T members were killed! Ian, Garrett…" Kara trailed off, with wide eyes.
"And you never told Ezra?" Kara asked, a moment later.
"Why would I? I had planned to keep that secret until my grave…and now there are only three original N.A.T members left…" Melissa trailed off, turning the gun towards Jason.
"Wait, wait…I haven't watched the tape! I didn't even know it existed!" Jason cried, holding his hands up in front of him.
"I can't take that chance. You could have made copies for all I know" Melissa replied, as Kara took a step forward.
"You said it yourself, Jason had left by that point" Kara insisted.
"He stills knows too much" Melissa retorted, as Kara quickly went to stand in front of Jason, shielding him with her body.
"If you want to kill him…you're gonna' have to get through me first" Kara announced, firmly.
"…Fine by me" Melissa mumbled, her finger moving to the trigger.
"No!" Jason yelled, grabbing Kara's shoulder, ready to pull her out of the way.
No shot was ever fired. Instead, Melissa suddenly dropped to the floor, the gun slipping out of her hand. Kara gaped at Spencer, who was holding a crumbling statue of Jesus in her hands, having just knocked out her sister with the object. Shards of the clay statue shattered to the floor around Melissa, as Spencer let them fall from her palm. A frown grew on Kara's face when she saw the large grin that spread over Spencer's lips.
"Admit it, that was pretty badass, right?" She smirked, her English accent now clear.
"Alex?!" Kara and Jason exclaimed, both shocked.
"Did someone order a rescue?" Alex grinned, reaching down to grab the gun from the floor, just in case Melissa was faking her collapse.
"Uh, what the hell is happening right now? Why do you sound like you're from Downton Abbey?" Hanna inquired.
"I'm Spencer's twin. I'd say it's nice to meet you but seeing as you're a murderer…" Alex trailed off, with a shrug.
"You're not Spencer?" Alison asked, still confused.
"She's just outside the door, I knocked her out and swapped places while you were all trying to get into the cellar" Alex explained, as the girls rushed through the doorframe to see she was telling the truth, finding Spencer hunched over on the ground.
"You came back for us?" Jason asked, as Alex nodded.
"That's what friends do, right?" Alex replied, as Kara grinned.
"Kara, would you mind doing the honours?" Alex suggested, gesturing her forward.
"My pleasure" She smirked, rushing forward to use Ezra's finger to re-open the cellar doors, glad to find no one was standing on the other side this time.
"Time to go!" Kara called out, turning around to find Hanna and Emily dragging a half-conscious Spencer forward.
"I think I might have a concussion…" Spencer trailed off, as her eyes connected with Alex.
"No such luck, Spencer" Alex scoffed, as she ushered the three down the steps of the tunnel.
"I'm hallucinating, right?" Spencer frowned, at both Hanna and Emily, who decided now wasn't the best time to explain.
"I think she's taking it pretty well" Alex mumbled, as Kara rolled her eyes, all but pushing her down the steps.
"Jase?" Kara exclaimed, when she watched him grab Melissa, pulling her into his arms.
"She might be a bitch but…she's still my sister, right?" Jason sighed, walking towards the steps.
"She wouldn't do the same for you" Kara pointed out, as Jason nodded.
"Guess I'll have to be the better person then" Jason said, with a small smile, as he followed the girls down the steps.
"If we—" Kara was cut off by a loud bang which echoed through the air, just as she placed her foot on the first step.
Jason whipped around instantly, his eyes flickered to a patch of red that was growing on Kara's stomach. His mouth went slack as Kara let out a startled gasp, her hands clamping down over her abdomen. Jason's eyes filled with tears as he watched his girlfriend fall to her knees, blood now staining the lower half of her shirt and dripping onto the floor. He stayed silent as he saw Jenna in the doorframe, a twisted smile on her face as she stumbled forward. She almost tripped over Kara's body, who had flopped to the floor, her eyes still wide open. Jason frowned as Kara slowly moved a finger to her lips, silently giving him a command. Jenna slowly crouched down, her smoking gun still in her hand, her usual black glasses removed. Just as she was aiming for Kara's head, the younger girl suddenly shot up, a large shard of the statue Alex had shattered in her hand. Jenna never saw the attack coming, as Kara wedged the sharp edge into her neck, in a slicing motion. Blood instantly began to pour from Jenna's neck, as Kara had managed to nick an artery. The blind girl stumbled backwards, as she choked on her own blood.
"Kara!" Jason cried, as she tried to push herself to her feet.
Her eyes flickered over to Jenna, just in time to see the girl take her final breath, watching as she slumped on the ground, completely motionless. Apart from the blood still seeping from her neck, as Kara forced herself to look away, feeling bile rise in her throat. She had killed someone. Jenna Marshall of all people. But it had been in self-defense. Jenna had made her choice and so had she. Kara let out a groan, as she placed her hand against her own bullet wound, seeing how blood trickled down her fingers.
"Are you okay?" Jason frowned as she stumbled towards him.
"Ask me in the morning" Kara mumbled, grabbing Jenna's discarded gun.
A moment later, she smashed the weapon against the panel on the cellar door, making sure that no one could follow behind them. Jason had given the unconscious Melissa to both Alex and Ali, who were giving each other a distrustful look. He rushed up the stairs, pulling Kara's arm around his shoulder, helping her to slowly take another step down. A loud cough had them turning back, seeing Ezra crawling towards them, his face stained with blood and smoke. Without a second thought, Kara reached up to grab the cellar doors, altering him to their presence.
"Don't!" Ezra exclaimed with wide eyes.
"Game over" Kara smirked, slamming the cellar doors down, as they locked in place.
Era raced forward, trying to pry the doors open with his bare fingers but it was no use. He let out a growl when he saw the control panel in the side was smashed to pieces, no longer working. He searched the room frantically for another way out but he knew it would be no good. There was only one way out. He rushed back towards the altar of the church, his eyes widening when he saw Aria was no longer tied to her chair. The door to the belltower was wide open, and with Aria nowhere to be seen, Ezra knew that was the only place she could go. Pushing forward, he placed his hand over his mouth, trying not to breathe in the thick smoke now filling the room. His head snapped up as he reached the bottom of the belltower and could hear footsteps above him.
"There's nowhere to run, Aria!" He called out, as he rushed up the staircase.
The belltower had only just finished refurbishments after being blown apart after Cece and Charles demise. The scaffolding and building instruments were still scattered around the top floor, laying beside Aria's feet. A smirk grew on Ezra's lips as he spotted the wrench she held tightly in her hand.
"This is the exact spot I killed Cece and Charles…how fitting it will be where we die too" Ezra smiled, almost fondly.
"You've been lying to me all these years, you…you sick freak!" Aria cried, holding the wrench out as Ezra took a step forward.
"I could say the same to you, Aria. Don't you think it's time for us to have an honest conversation? Just once?" Ezra insisted, his eyes flickering down the staircase as he saw the flames growing closer.
"Did you ever love me?" Aria questioned, as Ezra gave her a thoughtful look.
"…I could have. I genuinely did like you at the start, Aria. But the more I learnt about you, the more I saw the devil within" Ezra explained.
"No! I don't believe you! You loved me, we're going to get married!" Aria all but screamed, raising the wrench in the air.
"I have only ever loved one person. And that's Bethany…not her killer" Ezra spat out.
"I'm glad" Aria announced, her eyes darkening.
"What?" Ezra frowned.
"I'm glad I killed your precious Bethany. I'm glad I looked her in the eyes as she choked on her last breath—" Aria was cut off, as Ezra suddenly lunged forward, grabbing her by the throat.
"You don't get to talk about her like that" Ezra muttered, using his other hand to wrestle her for the wrench, managing to throw it across the floor.
By now the fire was quickly spreading up the wooden staircase, the heat becoming almost unbearable once again. Pulling her forward, Ezra shoved the wooden door on the wall open, letting in some cold night air. He looked at the grass down below, his jaw clenched as he found just how high up they were.
"We're made for each other, Ezra. Don't…don't you see that?" Aria stuttered, as he released his grip on her neck.
"We're soulmates," Aria told him, a manic look in her eyes, as he turned to fully look at her.
"I think I just figured out the end to my book" Ezra realised, reaching out to touch her face lightly, resting his forehead against her own.
"You and I started this story, Aria. There's only one way for us to end it…" Ezra trailed off, his eyes boring into her own.
"How?" Aria asked.
"Together" Ezra smiled, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, pulling her into a hug.
Before Aria had the time to react, Ezra suddenly threw them out of the tower, his arms still holding onto her. He imagined it was Bethany he was clutching, as he saw her face flicker behind his eyes, a smile on his lips. Everything next happened in slow motion, as Aria felt the wind whisking through her hair, feeling a sense of calm come over her. She could think of nothing but Ezra's arms and the sense of safety they still brought her…before everything went dark.
No one saw it happen. It was said neither of them made a sound as they fell. By the time the girls escaped from the tunnels and called for help, it was already over. There were ambulances and police cars covering most of the town as they emerged. Kara was quickly pulled into one of the ambulances, allowing the paramedics to do their job, as they put pressure on her wound. Luckily, the bullet had gone right through, having not hit anything important. She would still need to go to the hospital, as did most of the people that had been in the church. If they weren't being treated for burns or other injuries, most had inhaled a dangerous amount of smoke. The girls had been arrested immediately on the spot, with Toby taking a notable step back. The last thing he wanted was for his history with his ex-girlfriend to stop any future convictions from happening.
"They're really gone?" Kara questioned, from where she was sitting in the back of an ambulance, near the church, waiting to be taken to the ER.
"They died on impact. Both of them" Toby nodded, his eyes flickering over to the police tent on the grass outside the church, knowing Ezra and Aria's bodies were inside.
"It's over" Jason beamed, coming to sit beside her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder.
"…I want you to take my statement" Kara announced, as Toby shook his head.
"We can do that when your better—" Toby began, but she cut him off.
"No. Not only about what happened tonight. About everything. It's better it comes out now" Kara explained, as Jason frowned.
"Kara, some of the things we've done aren't exactly legal" Jason bit his lip.
"I don't want to live with the fear of all our secrets eventually coming out...but you don't have to do this, Jase. I'll understand" Kara exclaimed, as he squeezed her shoulder.
"I'm tired of lying" Jason smiled at her, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"I can come to the hospital tomorrow. Take your statement then" Toby offered, as she nodded, gratefully, watching him walk away.
"Hey, Dilaurentis!" A familiar voice yelled, as Jason's head snapped up.
"Oh God, here we go…" Jason trailed off, when he saw Dylan storming towards him.
"How's your head, man?" Jason questioned, as Dylan pursed his lips.
"You're a prick, that's how it is" Dylan grumbled, as Mona came to stand beside her husband, shaking her head, fondly.
"Well, I think you're the hero of the hour. You saved both of these idiots" Mona grinned, pressing a quick kiss to Dylan's cheek.
"Well, I wasn't the only one" Jason chuckled, waving over to a familiar brunette, who was slowly approaching them.
"Thanks for helping to clear up with Hastings' girl I was" Alex greeted, referring to how Kara and Jason had been forced to explain the twin situation to Toby, who had been completely shellshocked.
"It was the least we could do" Kara smiled at her.
"We'd be dead if it wasn't for you" Jason added, as Alex looked away, shyly.
"I heard they arrested Melissa" Mona stated.
"I reckon she'll be going down for a while" Dylan scoffed, as another member of their group approached.
"Maya's on route to the hospital. They think she'll make it…be out of action for a while though—" Wren began but was cut off as Alex sprung into his arms.
"…Sorry. I'm just, uh…happy to see you're alright" Alex chuckled, about to pull away, when she felt Wren wrap his arms around her.
"You too" Wren replied, as they stayed in the embrace for a few more seconds.
Jason and Kara shared a look, secretive smiles on their faces, as she nudged him with her elbow. She had a feeling the pair would be just fine.
"I called the hospital. Lucas is in surgery. We're going to head there now" Mona announced, as Kara nodded, quickly.
"Guys, before you go…Jason and I have decided we're going to tell the police what we've done. Maybe we'll be able to get a better plea by telling the truth now? We'll keep your names out of it if that's what you want?" Kara asked.
"It's been a while since I was arrested, so what the hell? The truth always comes out in the end, right?" Dylan shrugged, a few seconds later, as Kara rolled her eyes.
"I'm sticking by my husband" Mona stated, as she linked their hands.
"I'm in" Alex agreed.
"…I need to own up to what I've done. Even if it means I go down for life" Wren suggested, looking directly at Kara.
"We'll stick by each other, yeah? No matter what?" Kara exclaimed, as they all nodded.
"Well, unless we're gonna have some lame group hug I think we better—" Dylan began, but was cut off as Mona suddenly wrapped her arm around his shoulder.
Dylan let out a loud groan as the women in the group pushed them closer, until they all squished together, their limbs all over each other. It was a little difficult to pull off the group hug with so many of them, especially as some of them were injured, but none of them could stop the smiles spreading over their lips.
"I think you guys better see this" Toby's voice boomed from behind them, as they spun to see him holding a computer tablet in his hand.
Dylan took the device, his forehead frowning when he saw the headline on the screen. Kara instantly became concerned when she saw how his jaw dropped open. What would be enough to shock her brother of all people?
"What is it, Dyl?" Kara questioned, coming to stand beside him, as she began to read the headline for herself.
"At midnight a book was automatically released by the now-infamous killer, Ezra Fitz, detailing how he had tortured a group of teenagers for almost an entire decade for killing the love of his life. His co-conspirators, Jenna Marshall, Andrew Campbell and now Melissa Hastings have all been arrested. The book has already been purchased in the thousands after just an hour. Will you read 'Pretty Little Liars?'" Kara read aloud, her eyes wide, as they all shared a look.
"Son of a bitch…looks like Ezra got his book after all" Kara exclaimed.
Three Weeks Later
Alison Dilaurentis' eyes fluttered open slowly, as she was blinded by a white light shining above her. She tried to move her hands to shield herself from the light but found they were restrained. She looked down to find they were strapped to the metal bed she was lying on, and no matter how hard she pulled, they wouldn't budge. Her heart started to hammer in her chest as she realised why the room looked so familiar.
"Your old room was still available…aren't you lucky?" Kara announced, from where she was sitting by her bedside.
"I'm in Welby?" Alison gulped.
"The courts wanted you to have a psychiatric assessment. I guess you didn't pass" Kara mumbled, a smirk playing at her lips.
"N-no…this can't be happening. I'm not crazy!" Alison insisted, as Kara shrugged.
"But you've been going on and on about all these conspiracies, Ali. How everyone's been plotting against you…even me. How mad is that?" Kara stated, as Ali grit her teeth.
"It's the truth!" Ali practically screamed.
"You've never cared much for that in the past, have you? Besides, Ezra's book absolved us all of any guilt when he stated no one else was involved but the people he accused. And that would just be Jenna, Andrew and Melissa. And they didn't know half of what was going on, let's be honest...I guess Ezra did do one good thing in the end" Kara said, raising an eyebrow.
"How did I even get here? I…I don't remember anything" Alison frowned, worry coursing through her veins.
"Oh, that would be the LSD Wren slipped in your coffee before the psychiatrist came to see you" Kara whispered, smugly.
"What?" Alison gaped.
"We knew you'd go back to the lawyer you had during your trial for murdering Mona. I mean, what other lawyer would be willing to take your case on? She was rather willing to help us when we offered her $10,000 for such a simple task" Kara explained, as Alison's hands balled into fists.
"Where did you even get $10,000? When you first came here you had nothing but the clothes off your back?" Alison retorted.
"It's your money. All the bank accounts, safety deposit boxes, all of it…gifted to Jason a while back. I've got to say, I think this might just be his best investment yet" Kara grinned, as Alison practically growled.
"You won't get away with this!" Alison cried, straining against her restraints.
"Watch me" Kara smirked, as they heard the door open, and a doctor in a white coat stepped in.
"She's becoming very agitated again, Doctor. I think she might need to be sedated…we wouldn't want her hurting the baby, would we?" Kara exclaimed, as the doctor nodded.
"Quite right, Miss Dixon" He nodded, his English accent noticeable.
"Wait…my baby…I'm due in a few months…" Alison trailed off.
"Well, it will go to its father, of course. He is the next of kin after all" Kara stated.
"Wren always did say he wanted to be a father in college" The English doctor agreed, as Alison's eyes widened.
"You…you're in on this?" Alison gasped.
"For this sort of section, you need the approval from two doctors. Wren and I go far back…so far back the records won't show anything" The doctor explained, grabbing a tray as he began to draw a liquid from a vial.
"You bitch!" Alison yelled, now thrashing around on the bed.
"Now, is that any way to speak to the future Aunt of your child?" Kara mocked, coming to loom over her bed.
"It was all her! She's on the A team…they're all on the A team!" Alison screamed, hoping someone outside could hear her.
"Get better soon, Ali" Kara mumbled, a little too sweetly.
"No! It was her! She set me up…Kara!" Alison cried, as the brunette turned away from her, walking over to the door.
"Don't worry. I'll take good care of your child…I'll make sure they know exactly who you really are" Kara smirked, as she stepped through the door, hearing Alison scream after her.
