"How are there no cardio attendings in this entire hospital," Bailey roared.
"Dr Bailey what can I do," Annie asked.
"I need a cardio surgeon," Bailey said.
"I'm the only cardio surgeon here," Annie said, "what have we got?"
"17 year old suspected aortic arch dissection," Bailey barked.
"That's peds anyway," Annie snapped, "get me an OR I'm going in now."
"No Ct," Bailey asked.
"No time," Annie snapped, "we're moving. I want an OR prepped by the time I scrub. Eaket, Johnson, Lee with me."
"Altman," Bailey scolded.
"Dr Bailey if it's an arch if I don't go in now that kid is gone," Annie snapped, "trust me I was trained by the best."
"The chief." Bailey gasped.
"Trained me to do this from an intern," Annie snapped, "you're wasting time this kid doesn't have Bailey."
"Altman don't use that tone with me," Bailey warned, "I'll call the chief."
"Call her I'm going to scrub," Annie said, "she's at her high school reunion."
"Deputy chief," Bailey said.
"Sick," Annie replied, "I have to scrub. I'd rather explain defying you then killing a kid."
"Do it your way," Bailey snapped, turning on her heels and storming away. Grumbling to herself, "leave the chief's daughter as the only cardio surgeon this weekend and she thinks she can run the place. Bend protocol, refuse to listen to me like I wasn't her attending and I didn't train her. I hired her as an inter. I gave her a shot."
Teddy answered her phone, "Miranda this better be good."
"You daughter just went over my head to take a patient straight to the OR," Bailey snapped.
"With what," Teddy asked.
"Suspected aortic arch discretion," Bailey said.
"She doesn't have time for tests," Teddy said, "she needs to get in there and crack the chest. Tell Annie to go now."
"She already cleared an OR for her patient and is scrubbing," Bailey said.
"Send her a couple good residents," Teddy replied, "it's a long save if she can do it. We maybe save 20% of them."
"She took Eaket, Johnson and Lee," Bailey snapped.
"Send her a fourth or fifth year," Teddy replied, "she took second and third."
"They were standing there," Bailey said.
"You called me to complain that my daughter is doing her job," Teddy clarified.
"You didn't hear her tone," Bailey hissed.
"If she used a tone she had a reason to," Teddy replied, "Bailey I know my daughter. If Annie used a tone or raised her voice she had a good reason to for her patient."
"You're condoning this," Bailey asked.
"Unless she swore at you it's what we've all been working on with her for the last six years," Teddy replied, "I'll talk to her when I get back. Yang is only a couple hours out; call her if you have to and send a chopper. Bailey dr Altman can do this. We've taught her well."
"Fine," Bailey huffed and hung up the phone."
"Work emergency," a woman asked Teddy.
"Yes," Teddy replied, "I'm sorry I don't remember you name I haven't been back in 30 years."
"Lauren," the woman replied, "I was Petersen but it's Perkins now. You're Teddy Altman aren't you."
"I am," Teddy replied, "it's good to see you again."
"Where did you go," Lauren asked.
"From here Texas," Teddy replied, "the DC, Florida, New York, Iraq, Seattle, Germany and now back to Seattle for good."
"What do you do that you've moved so much especially with your baby," Lauren said.
"I'm a cardiothoracic surgeon," Teddy replied, "so the first three moves were for school. Annie was with family until my first move to Seattle."
"You had a girl," Lauren said.
"Annie is 31," Teddy smiled, "married with her own daughter."
"So married, kids," Lauren asked.
"Yes a few years now," Teddy said, "three kids, Annie 31, Leo is 7 and Allison is6."
"How far between the oldest and youngest," Lauren asked.
"25 years," Teddy replied, "it was an adjustment at first but my three have a really interesting bond. They love each other. My younger two are staying with my oldest and her husband because my husband is lecturing on a couple bases this week about a new trauma surgery technique he's been working on with our son-in-law."
"Your son-in-law is also a surgeon," Lauren asked.
"It's the family business," Teddy said, "my oldest daughter is as well. Tell me about you."
"No kids," Lauren said, "I just married my third husband Andrew. He's here somewhere. He's a doctor as well, a psychiatrist specializing in trauma."
"Andrew Perkins the trauma counslor," Teddy asked.
Andrew walked over, "Teddy Altman it it major Altman or chief Altman now?"
"I use chief at work," Teddy replied.
"You have a daughter don't you," Andrew said.
"Two girls," Teddy said, "you've only met Annie my oldest when she would visit me in Germany. "
"Mini you," Andrew said, "how is she? What is she doing now?"
"Second year of her peds cardio fellowship at Grey Sloan so she's a surgeon now," Teddy said, "she's been married almost four years and her daughter is almost two."
"How long ago was it she was following you around Seattle Grace in resident's scrubs trying to blend in," Andrew asked, "she would only talk to you, your resident and the red headed trauma surgeon."
"When you would have seen her there she was 19 and just finishing her sophomore year of college. The red head you're thinking of is Owen Hunt. We've been married 6 years now he's Allison and Leo's dad," Teddy replied, "how did you two meet?"
"A conference," Lauren said, "I work with children who have experienced trauma."
"A lot of my staff have no understanding of trauma. I should bring you two out to lecture," Teddy said, "or peds and trauma departments do okay but the rest."
"Do you have pictures of your kids," Lauren asked.
"Lots," Teddy said.
"So rumors were true you left medcom to marry Hunt and have his babies," Andrew said.
"Baby," Teddy said, "we adopted our son Leo."
"We should mingle," Lauren said, ending the conversation, she had questions about how her husband knew Teddy.
"It was good to talk to you," Teddy smiled before walking away.
"How do you know Teddy," Lauren asked Andrew.
"We dated for a while about 12 years ago," Andrew answered, "then worked together in Germany for a couple years. Why?"
"There were some messed up rumors about her when we were 21," Lauren said, "I don't know what to believe. Last time I saw her she was 21 and pregnant then ran away to Texas."
"She went to medical school in Texas," Andrew replied, "Annie was born there. I haven't seen Teddy since she left Germany six months before I did."
"Her oldest Annie," Lauren asked, "some people said she gave her up."
"She did," Andrew replied, "then when the girl was 19 they reconnected. I know the story she told me years ago. Annie was a very sweet kid. I met her a few times in Germany. She would spend her breaks from school with mama as she calls Teddy and follow Teddy around the hospital."
"Teddy was different when we were kids," Lauren commented.
"I know some of what's happened," Andrew said, "10 years in the army most of it in the field changes you. You have nothing to worry about Lauren. Teddy was only ever a colleague."
"You said dated," Lauren quipped.
"Six or seven dates then something happened to Annie and the girl was in the hospital and Teddy stopped talking to me," Andrew said, "then a year later I heard she had married her first husband. Then she was in Germany single after Henry passed."
"Was she close to her oldest," Lauren asked, "Teddy was an absolute mess that summer, she wasn't herself."
"When I would see them in Germany they were very close," Andrew said, "Annie looked a lot like Teddy."
Christina was on a date when her phone rang, "Bailey what is it?"
"Mini Altman is taking an aortic arch dissection into to OR with no attending," Bailey barked.
"And she's a second year fellow," Christina said, "if she was just cardio Grace would be done in six months. Her extra year is for the peds component. Teddy trained her, I trained her. Bailey she's ready."
"How far away are you," Bailey barked.
"Dr Bailey," Chrisitna argued, "I'm off. I'm on a date. Unless Grace Altman is actively killing her paitent you don't need me."
"She defied me and she's your fellow," Bailey barked.
"The chief is her mother," Christina said, "call Teddy."
"I did," Bailey said, "she refused to call her daughter off."
"Grace is a good surgeon shes ready for this repair," Chrsitna said.
"Yang just get here," Bailey barked.
"I'm over an hour away," Chrsitina said, "she's doing it Dr. Bailey you let Grace Altman do it or that patient dies."
"Yang just get here," Bailey snapped.
"Give her a trauma surgeon and she's fine," Chrisitina said,
Bailey stormed to Annie's OR and saw Josh had scrubbed in with her.
"Mini Altman," Bailey yelled.
"Dr Bailey you're blowing my concentration," Annie barked.
"How's your patient," Bailey asked.
"We got him here just in time another minute and I would have had no shot," Annie replied, "he's on bypass. I'm working on the heart and Dr. Riggs is working on the chest cavity, I'm waiting for the grafts to come up from down stairs."
"Do you need an attending," Bailey asked.
"No," Annie barked, "you haven't trained me for 7 years for me not to be able to do this."
"Do you need help," Bailey offered.
"This is my OR and we're good," Annie said, "give me another two hours."
Finishing the surgery Annie scrubbed out.
"Bailey is never going to trust me," Annie groaned as her and Josh scrubbed.
"She does she just thinks shes chief when Teddy and Meghan are away," Josh said.
"I like being the attendings," Annie replied.
"Two months," Josh said.
"For you," Annie laughed, "I have another year."
"Peds is adding time babe we knew that," Josh said.
"Maternity leave didn't help," Annie said, "she's almost two."
"Two," Josh said, "thats big."
"What do you think of another," Annie asked.
"You only just stopped feeding Ellie," Josh said.
"We said two," Annie pointed out.
"Lets finish your fellowship," Josh said.
"Closer to finished," Annie agreed, "I did 5th year I could do the final year of my fellowship. Maybe start trying around Christmas?"
"Christmas would be okay," Josh agreed.
"Christmas," Annie agreed, "Ellie will be two and a half. She's not our baby is she?"
"She's growing," Josh agreed.
"Too fast," Annie said, "I miss my baby sleeping on my chest."
"Why do I have 8 missed calls from mama and Yang," Annie asked, distracted by her phone.
"Call one and see," Josh prompted.
Annie called Teddy.
"Hi sweetheart," Teddy greeted, "I heard you yelled at Bailey."
"She wanted a CT on my patient 17 year old with an aortic arch dissection I took him from the ambulance straight to the OR," Annie replied, "I know I shouldn't have yelled at Bailey but the time for the CT would have killed my patient."
"Did he make it," Teddy asked.
"He did," Annie said, "in ICU now."
"Did Bailey call an attending," Teddy asked.
"I have missed calls from Yang," Annie replied, "how was your reunion?"
"Well my highschool mean girl is married to Andrew Perkins," Teddy laughed.
"Trauma counselor dude you dated when I was 19," Annie clarified.
"Yes," Teddy replied, "he was in Germany when I was there."
"How was he," Annie asked, "I think he always had a crush on you."
"Good," Teddy replied, "he remembered and asked about you. He was surprised that your half way through your fellowship and your daughter is nearly two."
"Couple more months," Annie replied, "I'm off for four days now and we're going to start potty training."
"That'll be fun," Teddy teased.
"I'm so done with diapers. She hates diapers and is asking about the toilet it's time," Annie said, "even if we can get her trained in the day time and use diapers or pull ups at night."
"You ran cardio today," Teddy said.
"I did," Annie replied, "mama it felt good. I took control, I did it. I ran my service and my OR. i told Bailey to get out when she blew my concentration."
"Bailey texted me about that," Teddy replied.
"I stood up," Annie said.
"I know you did," Teddy said, "you did it. You stood up to Miranda Bailey. You fought for your patient, you saved your paitent. Annie that's what I've been waiting to see since you were an intern!"
"I know," Annie said, "mama I did it."
"You did Sweetheart," Teddy said, "keep me updated on your patient and I'll see you in a few days."
"I'm going to head home soon," Annie replied, "pick up Ellie then Ali and Leo from Nana. It's Friday, Pizza, Ice Cream and a fort. Josh is working overnight so it's just us, the fort in the living room is fun."
"Go have fun with the kids," Teddy said, "they look forward to these nights."
"I do two," Annie admitted.
"I saw a sub intern application from Kaitlyn McKellar," Teddy said.
"It's Katie," Annie replied, "I helped proofread and edit like you used to with my sub I and residency applications."
"Mentor your cousin," Teddy said, "I can take one cross border student if she can get a study permit."
"Her residency," Annie asked.
"Three week interview," Teddy said.
"Consider it," Annie said.
"You want your cousin a McKellar day to day," Teddy asked.
"Chris," Annie replied.
"Your brother is different," Teddy argued.
"It's a new normal," Annie said, "Katie wants surgery and you need family around for that."
"Mentors matter," Teddy agreed, "Annie I'm going to go back to my reunion. I'll see you when I'm home."
"See you soon," Annie said.
Please Review. I'm still working on a few last chapters. I'm going to wrap this up when Annie is an Attending, it feels like a good point to wrap up her story, there's just a few last loose ends to tie up. Please let me know what loose ends you want to see tied up or stories finished.
