After they'd managed to find out just what it was that the Yeerks had sent that gigantic – though even that word seemed almost inadequate to describe what they had all just seen – spaceship of theirs, the fact that the Yeerks seemed to need Earth to supply them while they were trying to invade, Tommy found himself wondering what they were going to be able to do about it. At least, he wondered about that kind of thing until he and the other Animorphs ended up in the sights of another pack of wolves.
Actual wolves, this time; wolves who had clearly just killed a rabbit, and probably thought that he and the other Animorphs were trying to steal it from them.
(What are you guys doing?) Tobias demanded, swooping down on them; he sounded about as Tommy was starting to feel with the whole situation.
(Shut up, Tobias,) Jake snapped, eyes not leaving the threatening wolf standing in front of him for a moment. (We're in a situation, here.)
(I can see that,) the hawk said. (Back away; you guys don't have time for this.)
(It's not that simple,) Cassie said, her tone steady, though she sounded more than a little worried; no need to guess why, under the circumstances. (If Jake looks weak, the other alpha may attack. We screwed up; we're in their territory, and they think we're trying to steal their kill.)
The sight of Tobias, swooping down from the sky to snatch up that very same kill, with every one of the wolves that had been so very close to attacking the rest of them hot on his tail-feathers, froze Tommy in sheer terror for a long moment. Then Jake called for them to run, and Tommy moved quickly to leave with his friends and fellow Animorphs.
(I'll see if I can get a time reading.)
(Thanks,) Tommy said, as Tobias vanished into the sky once more.
