It was Young Shisui to intrude on her domain this time.

It had been unexpected for him to appear in the middle of the night, just it had been unexpected for to show herself so willingly. It had taken him by surprise so much so that for the briefest of moments, as the dead leaves fluttered and fell through the cold autumn air, yellow-green eyes had met a glowing red in the darkness of the forest.

Then Shisui had blinked, the red wheels spinning into black irises once more.

"Oh, hey there Tomomi!" he greeted, sliding on a grin that was a little too forced to be natural. "Thought you'd be fast asleep by now. Sorry if I woke you, I was just—uhm. I…"

He trailed of awkwardly, expression fading. It was obvious to anyone with eyes that young Shisui was sullen and depressed about something, bereft of his usual boisterous spirit. The Feline let out a terse sight, wondering what she had done in a previous life that would cause her to become a magnet for the troubles of young, dark-haired troublemakers.

She turned, beckoning the boy inside the shambles of a house. Inside there was a small fire pit in the center of the room, seated just under a hole in the roof. Shisui went about checking and lighting the firepit unprompted as the Feline laid herself in a crude bed of spare pillows and blankets.

Then she waited. Because this was not the little weasel, the small and curious child that came to her asking about subjects of the incomprehensible. This was the older child soldier. The one who was more cautious, who liked to push her boundaries and see where he was left standing.

She did not know how much young Shisui would confide in her, but she knew that whatever is on the child's mind had weighed down on him enough to seek her out in the middle of the night.

Eventually he let out a strained chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "Sorry for showing up like this, Tomomi, I didn't want to disturb you. Honest. I was just out on a walk to clear my head a bit. I kinda got into a argument about something stressful and I just... I wanted a moment of—of—"

"Peace?" she finished wryly. "Perhaps in a place of solitude?"

Shisui's eyes widened, mouth parting in a gape.

She snorted at his expression. Her tail wrapped around her body, and she let her eyes fall closed. "Then take it while you can, Young Shisui. Moments of genuine peace rarely last. They are especially brief for creatures as prone to conflict as you shinobi are…"

He didn't respond, face falling into a deeply thoughtful expression. Long after the Feline had drifted from consciousness Shisui still sat awake. Firelight and embers danced in the reflection of his dark eyes as he contemplated the heavy thoughts that burdened him more and more each day.

The boy let out an exhausted sigh, rubbing his burning eyes as he joined the Feline in rest. He tucked his arm beneath his head as he stared at the dark sky through the hole in the roof. The words of his furred companion ringing in his head.

"…prone to conflict, huh?"

A/N: Stares hard at the date, wondering why writing is so slow? Why, Nanami? Oh well... here, a chapter for you that vaguely looks like plot progressing. Only Shisui this time around, and he's not very cute is he... poor Shisui has a lot on his mind this time...

Stay safe out there, you guys! Take care of yourself, and take care of those around you! I love you!
