Day 49: Diekuu Ohrowchee

On this marathon, we've seen first bosses that are dragons. We've also seen first bosses that are robots. What happens when we combine the two? Well, the end result is my second favorite first boss: the Diekuu Ohrowchee from The Wonderful 101.

First let's talk about this boss' appearance. It's basically a robotic hydra with a white and gold color scheme. This boss look absolutely badass. Now, onto the boss itself.

Piloted by Laambo, the Diekuu Ohrowchee is set to destroy Blossom City's Goddess Statue, which is basically the only thing preventing the GEATHJERK from invading Earth. Laambo is about ready to destroy the statue when the Wonderful One's flagship, the Virgin Victory, shows up to take him on. And with that the fight begins.

In phase one, you must pilot the Virgin Victory through the cityscape and shoot at the Diekuu Ohrowchee while avoiding its fireballs, which can easily be shot down. The boss can also knock down some building which you must speed your way through, and it can also fling debris your way, which can also be easily shot down.

The first phase is easy but also really fun.

After depleting the boss' health, you must fire the Virgin Victory's anchor at its tail so you can get onto the boss' back safely. Things seem to be going well, but Laambo notices you before you can make it, and he has the Diekuu Ohrowchee fling you off. But thanks to Unite Hand, you are able to grab onto the boss' wings and make your way up to its back that way, making sure to avoid the spikes coming up from the wings in the process.

Once you making to the Diekuu Ohrowchee's back, the second phase will begin.

Two of the boss' heads will try and fight you head on, and it's up to you to use either Wonder Blue's Sword or Wonder Green's Gun to take the heads on. As you try and hack off the two heads, they'll attack you by breathing fire at you, shooting lazers, biting at you, throwing goo bombs, and spitting out some of the citizens its captured which you can use to create temporary Wonderful Ones. There are also some quick time events in the fight where the Daiku Ohrowchee will try and eat you, so be aware of that. There are even instances where Laambo himself will get involved in the fight and try and attack you himself. Just beat him up until he returns to his perch on the third head.

There's a lot going on in phase two, but it's nothing compared to how you dispose of one of the heads.

After a while, the left head will try and stab at you with its tongue-spear, causing Wonder Blue to parry it and gouge its eye out with his blade. By using Unite Build to create a new eye, you can control the left head and bite off the right head. I said it before, I'll say it again...

Platinum Games...I fucking love you.

After seeing the damage you've done to the Diekuu Ohrowchee, Laambo will go on a rant which causes him to crash into a building, throwing you off of the boss' back and onto some falling platforms. The Diekuu Ohrowchee crashing also means that it loses its grip on the statue, causing it to begin plummeting towards the ground. You now have five minutes and thirty seconds to end the fight and save the statue.

In this final phase of the fight you must throw bombs at the Diekuu Ohrowchee, and reflect its lazers by using Wonder Blue's sword. There are also moments where the boss will try and break the platform you're standing on, forcing you to Wonder Jump onto another platform closer to the Goddess statue.

Upon getting close enough to the statue, a GEATHJERK ship will appear and try and shoot its lazer at you, which you can reflect and throw at the Diekuu Ohrowchee's remaining head. When the boss bites down on the ship, use Wonder Green's Gun to shoot at it and blow both the ship and the remaining head up.

With the Diekuu Ohrowchee losing all three of its heads, Laambo will try once again to engage you physically by flying close enough to you so he can slash at you with his sword, the Dechno-Bo. Parry Laambo's slashes with Wonder Blue's sword until you send him flying upwards.

For this fight's finisher, you must use Unite Build to makes an arrow for the Goddess Statue, shoot it through Laambo, grab his Dechno-Bo, and cut both him and the Diekuu Ohrowchee's remnants in half, finally ending this fight.

The fight against Laambo and the Diekuu Ohrowchee is just downright epic. Take the easy but fun nature of the first phase, the challenge of the second phase, and the fast paced nature of the third phase, and you get my second favorite first boss and one of the best bosses in The Wonderful 101.

I may have just scratched the surface of this game and only completed the first three operations, but the bosses in this game have some big shoes to fill after a great first impression like this.

But alas, the marathon isn't done yet as there is only one more first boss that just barely beat out the Diekuu Ohrowchee.
