Chapter 102
Jasmine had spent the rest of the afternoon figuring out all the different doctors that Arthur would need going forward, as well as setting up mind healer appointments for the boys. Theo had already started paperwork to have Arthur transferred to a secure location with better mind healers and general care physicians. He had done some research into Healer Appleby and found his credentials lacking. Her friend had more connections in America that were willing to take Arthur and hopefully heal his mind and reverse the spells effects.
It was later that same evening when Fabian and Gideon arrived through the floo. Jasmine, Sirius, Bill and Charlie were waiting for the twins in her office. The boys were sitting on the sofa against the far wall, a large purple knit throw blanket was covering them. The twins had been put to bed nearly an hour earlier. Jasmine didn't expect them to sleep through the night. They were young and in a new home. Not to mention, they were still processing the loss of their mother and siblings. That had not been a fun conversation to have with a pair of three year old boys. Explaining Death to children in general was difficult, but talking to them about the death of their family was even worse.
Bill had just hugged Charlie the entire time Jasmine and Sirius explained in simple terms what had happened to Molly, Percy, Ron and Ginny. It was going to be a long recovery for them. Jasmine knew quite a bit about childhood trauma, having a trunk full of it herself, but she wasn't equipped to psychoanalyze any of it herself.
When the Prewitt twins emerged from the fireplace they looked worse for wear. Their skin was pale and robes were singed. Though, their eyes were sharp and alert when they spotted Bill and Charlie. The boys didn't move from their blanket cocoon, but they did wave.
Sirius was the first to speak up. "What happened? It looks like you lost a fight with a small dragon."
Charlie giggled and made a small roaring noise from behind them. Bill rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, trying to appear serious.
He was elven, so it wasn't working. He was just pouting, but Jasmine appreciated the effort.
"Hey, Bill, I haven't seen you in months. How are you holding up?"
Bill scowled as Charlie hugged him. "How do you think?"
"That is a dumb question, Fabian," Gideon muttered as he approached his two nephews and pulled them into a tight embrace. The two boys eagerly wrapped their arms around him.
Bill wiped at his eyes, but kept his lip from quivering. "I went to see dad today…they aren't sure what's going to happen with his mind, so I think we're staying with Jasmine right now…"
Fabian ruffled Charlie's hair, eliciting a squeak out of the younger boy. "Jasmine is your sponsor. She is going to keep you and your brothers safe. You know that your mum didn't want you all to live with me and Gideon. Our jobs are far too dangerous."
Bill frowned, but didn't argue. "I know, but you're our family. Do you not want us to live with you?"
Gideon let out a sigh and ran a hand through his hair, grimacing a bit when he tugged on a burnt strand or two. "Bill, we would love for you and your brothers to live with us, but your mum was right. Our jobs are very dangerous and we have a lot of enemies. Living with Lady Peverell is best."
Was it?
Jasmine was pretty sure she had a longer list of enemies.
Considering Tom Riddle was at the very top made his sound ridiculous. They had to know the political situation between her and Tom's faction, but her warding would keep them safe. That much was true.
Bill nodded, but his brows were still pinched and he was breathing a bit fast. He was wringing his wrists and biting his lip. Jasmine put a hand on his shoulder and he stilled. Her eyes narrowed the twins.
She opened her mouth to respond when a small voice interrupted her.
"Sirius is here too! He can help keep us safe too!" Charlie shouted from the sofa, his small fists were curled into the blanket, nearly white.
Sirius let out a small cough, his cheeks flushing as all eye turned towards him.
Gideon had the nerve to wiggle his eyebrows. Merlin, this was not how she wanted them to find out about this.
Fabian's lip curled and his eyes had a very familiar mischievous glint to them. Fred and George were due to inherit that particular look. "Is he now? I know that he was here for his cousin last night, but I was unaware that he lived here full time? Do your parents know about this, Sirius?"
Sirius rolled his eyes and waved his left hand in front of them, the ring on his finger becoming visible. "We've been married for nearly two years. Don't worry, my family is more than aware of our relationship. No one wanted me to marry Jasmine more than my father and aunt."
The twins' eyes went wide at the mention of Sirius' aunt. "Ah, well then, I wouldn't want to argue with Cassiopeia Black.
"Aside from your fear of Cassiopeia, is there anything else you'd like to tell the boys before they go off to their rooms for bed?" There was grumbling from both of them, but they didn't sound all that convincing. The day had been draining from start to finish.
Gideon rubbed the back of his neck and tapped the tip of his boot on the floor. "We're also going to handle the funeral arrangements. It's the least we can do. Molly was our baby sister."
Jasmine gave sharp nod. It was the least they could do. She was going to make sure that they did more than that for the boys in the future. Family was important and if these two idiots made it through the war, they were going to need to spend time with their nephews. Jasmine doesn't want Bill or Charlie to grow up resenting them for not helping enough when they really needed them. "Good, let us know the date and the time. Boys go up to your rooms. Sirius and I will be with you in a little bit to tuck you in."
Both boys gave their uncles quick hugs before ducking out of the room. Jasmine could see them with her rune vision sprinting up the stairs. Anything to get away from the adult conversations.
"How was Arthur…I didn't want to mention him with the kids around," Fabian asked leaning against the fireplace, long limbs loose and at ease after the boys were out of sight.
Jasmine bit her lip and explained Arthur's condition. "There isn't anything concrete, but it is going to be a long time before he is in any condition to be near the boys. I'm currently talking to one of my friends, who has some decent connections with mind healers in the states. We might be moving him across the pond for a bit."
The twins nodded and even Sirius was listening intently. She hadn't really had the chance to completely explain what the healer had told her earlier in the day or what she had discussed with Theo.
The three men started to speculate which healers they could find get a second opinion on Arthur. Jasmine lets out a sigh. Theo has the most contacts, she can handle this aspect without their interference.
"Did you two find anything worth mentioning? You look like you had to have found something with all the bruising?" Jasmine asked before the conversation got sidetracked.
Fabian rolled up his sleeves, revealing more burns and cuts, "Yes, we traced some of the spellwork that was used at Molly's home. It was black magic…vile stuff. We managed to catch one of the perpetrators. There was a bit of a scuffle, but we caught him. Gideon had a…personal discussion with him. Brother dearest, tell them what you found out."
Gideon pulled himself away from the fireplace and rolled his eyes at his brother's flare for the dramatics. "After some less than gentle persuasion, I found out that there isn't just one, but two moles in the Order. One of them gave away the Weasley's location and the other one managed to get the location of the Malfoy residence. We're going to need to speak with Albus about all of this."
"I've spoken to Albus about a mole in the Order already. He and the Aurors in the group are looking into it," Sirius replied with a wave of his hand.
"No, he's only been searching for a single traitor. I've gotten a full confession of two unmarked Order members being a part of the Death Eaters. This isn't speculation any longer. We didn't get names, our new friend was sworn to secrecy about that, but not everyone attends the Order meetings and only two were held at Molly's home. How did they learn about the Malfoy Family?"
That was an excellent question. Jasmine had done enough warding on the manor that unless someone knew of its location, no one could just stumble upon it. She hadn't gotten to the more advanced blood wards. Someone would have needed to know that the Malfoys were back in England and then follow them home. Jasmine would have to figure out who knew about the warding project and then see if Narcissa had been out and about. Either Cissy slipped up and was followed or Jasmine was going to need to clean out her warding department and she really didn't want to have to do extensive investigations on them.
She had spent months vetting all applications in her department. Most of the people working for her were highly skilled and not easily replaceable.
"Not that many people knew about the warding project. I can ask around. In a day or so I will ask Cissy where she was the day of the attack. I'm worried that someone was following her and she didn't know it. Neither of us are generally around Order members," Jasmine replied with a shrug. Outside of the Marauders, Jasmine spent little to no time with anyone from the Order. She had never really agreed with them on most political issues and it just didn't seem worth the fight.
Fabian pinched the bridge of his nose. "If you can think of anything let us know. We can't let these people win. Merlin knows we're close to the end of the war. We just need to finally corner this stupid Dark Lord and end it."
Jasmine couldn't agree more. She clapped them both on the shoulder. "We will see you at the funeral," she gripped their arms tightly, "And, if either of you make your nephews cry because you can't be there for them, just know that I will find you and make you see the errors of your ways."
The two visibly paled and stepped towards the fireplace. Sirius wrapped his arms around Jasmine's waist and set his chin on her shoulder. "That's my wife, a certified badass," he whispered as the floo was activated.
Later that evening after everyone had settled, Jasmine and Sirius curled up together in bed. She hadn't been able to shake the feeling that something was off about the way that Tom had stopped by her office.
She rolled over to face Sirius. He was awake even if he looked disheveled and ready for a night full of interruptions from various children.
Jasmine traced nonsensical shapes on his bicep as she started to speak. "Tom stopped by my office last night. I assumed it was to distract me from the attack at the Malfoys, but now I'm not sure. I don't think he was aware I had done any warding on their manner. I think it was a fluke that I saved them and he was meant to distract me from the attack at the Burrow."
As the words left her lips she realized that maybe that was true. It might have been pure luck that she saved Cissy. Maybe the Weasley residence was supposed to be some kind of trap. She would never know.
Sirius wrapped his arms around her waist, "Jazz, you did what you had to do. You saved my cousin and her family. According to the reports, by the time you got to Malfoy Manor, Molly and the kids were already dead. We just need to figure out who the traitors are."
Ugh, she wanted to point her finger at Peter. He had betrayed everyone in her past lives, but she didn't know him well enough here to make that decision. He hadn't really interacted with the Marauders since their fifth year. Jasmine didn't want to throw someone innocent under the bus. She had changed too many things to be completely sure of Peter's betrayal.
Then again, this kind of betrayal seemed very familiar.
A small sigh escaped her lips as she decided to tell Sirius anyway. He knew Peter far better than she did at this point. "In my prior lives, Peter betrayed the Order and it cost James and Lily their lives. I don't know if he would do the same thing in this life…I figured I should at least let you know. You can keep a closer eye on him than I can."
The mattress shifted slightly so they were facing each other. Sirius' eyes were wide and his hands were shaking. "Peter did that and you've been letting us interact with him all these years? He killed James and Lily?" He hissed, his voice nearly coming out in parseltongue.
Jasmine pinched the bridge of her nose. They did not need to start fighting before bed. That never ended well for either of them. "With all the changes to the timeline, I had no idea if he would do something similar. I wasn't going to taint your relationship with him if he wasn't doing anything harmful. Though, it seems that either Tom isn't that original in his Halloween 1981 plans or he's using the same idiotic rat that he had the first time."
Sirius ran a hand through his hair and flopped back on the bed. He let out a long sigh with his eyes closed. "I'll keep an eye on him, but please let me know about anything else that could help us. I know you don't like talking about your past since you technically erased it living here, but sometimes some information is necessary."
"I'll tell you what I can. I don't know how much information is accurate anymore. Peter isn't close with any of you. If he tries to cozy up to you I suppose you can flag it as suspicious behavior. Honestly, anyone trying to gain access to your personal residences should be red flagged. Does anyone come to mind," she muttered, starting to drift off after the ridiculous day they've had today and it would only get worse as the funeral approached.
She was going to have to deal with a lot more Light Wizards as that date got closer. That was not something she was going to look forward to.
There was an unintelligible mutter from the pillow next to her. "I'll think about it. I think we need sleep. That might help us clear out heads a bit."
It might…but Jasmine ended up starting up at the ceiling for another hour before finally dropping off to sleep. She just had too much running through her mind. She, much like the Malfoys, had some revenge to plot. Tom had distracted her and it had nearly cost eight lives. She had worked too hard to have friends and family die on her now.
Jasmine's eyes fluttered shut and before she knew it she heard the sounds of birds chirping and a small stream trickling in the distance. There was grass all around her, morning dew was still sticking to the blades, she could feel it seeping into all of clothing. Long fingers were running through her hair at a relaxing even pace.
Something wasn't right…
When she opened her eyes, she came face to face with her "favorite" hooded figure. Death was leaning over her as he sat cross legged on the mossy ground. His skeletal fingers were carding through her hair as she slowly came to.
"You suffered great losses yesterday. I know you and the Weasley woman were friends. Lady Magic is displeased with her passing, though she doesn't blame you. You saved the Malfoy line from complete extinction. She doesn't trust Lucius to handle the family on his own."
Jasmine let out a sigh.
It was nice to know that Lady Magic appreciated her effort.
"I'm just disappointed I couldn't do more."
Death hummed quietly, his hand stopped moving. "You can't be in two places at once. The abomination out played you this time. For that he will pay."
She was going to make sure that he did more than just pay. Jasmine was going to make sure he suffered for a long time before his soul received any kind of rest.
"I do love it when you crave destruction of corrupt souls. I did have a request for you."
Jasmine pulled herself into a sitting position and noticed that there was in fact a small river a few meters away. "A request for me?"
"It isn't often that a soul can persuade me to do something for them, but this one was particularly convincing." Death replied and snapped his fingers, causing a bright flash to blind Jasmine for a moment. When the spots cleared form her eyes, the visage of Molly Weasley stood across the river from her.
"Hello, Jasmine. I wanted to have a word with you before moving on."
Jasmine mutely nodded and stood up. Molly wasn't going to be able to cross the river, so Jasmine walked to the banks. The Master of Death could never cross the river, but can witness the souls on the other side and communicate with them on occasion. Molly looked like she always did, without a hair out of place, a spoon in her robe pocket and her wand in her hair. "I'm so sorry," was the only thing Jasmine could think to say.
"Dear, what happened wasn't your fault. I just wanted to thank you for taking my boys in. If I could give you a hug, I would. I love my brothers, but they can't handle four young boys. Please keep them safe for me," Molly said as she wiped tears from her eyes.
Jasmine nodded without hesitation. "I will need to be killed before any harm comes to those boys. You have my word."
They were going to live through war. She was going to make sure of it.
Molly started to fade, her gaze was drawn to a sound behind her. "Take care of Arthur, for as long as you can. Send them all my love. You're a special girl, Jasmine Peverell. I'll be watching."
Before Jasmine could answer Molly was gone and Death's hand was on her shoulder. "The world is worse off without her in it, but I think you can help her children and fill some of void left behind."
She shook her head. No one can replace Molly. Jasmine would mother the boys and keep them safe. She'd tell stories about their parents, get stories from family and friends and make sure that she isn't forgotten. Jasmine will make sure that those boys know how much their mother loved them. It was the least she could do for Molly.
"Send me home, I have kids to take care of."
"As you wish."
By the time morning rolled around all four of the Weasley boys had migrated into master bedroom. The twins had timidly asked for cuddles near four in the morning and then never left, Charlie had ventured in around five with a nightmare, though he decided he wanted to sleep near the foot of the bed under a fluffy quilt and Bill had wandered in sometime after that and curled up on an armchair in the corner of the room.
Jasmine woke up at nine the next morning with a small foot in her face and a small child curled up to her back. Sirius had George's other foot in his face.
She held back a sigh. It seemed like they had skipped a step in their relationship, again. They were supposed to have a baby before two toddlers, an eight-year-old and a preteen.
And with that the chapter ends. Accidental child acquisition has occurred and this section of the fic is just about at it's end. Next chapter we have some more political madness and some characters that we haven't seen in a while will appear again.
Wow, this story is so close to being finished. I'm in the middle of writing chapter 108. I only have another two or three left till I'm finished writing. After those are done you guys are going to get updates every week until all of them are posted.
Thank you for all the reviews, favorites and follows.
My next update will be on the 16th.
