The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 637.
"Ethan can I have a word?" Connie asked, quietly. Ethan had spent many nights at his brothers side, reading to him.
"Sure" Ethan stood up, giving Cal's hand a quick squeeze. "I'll be back in a minute mate"
Cal just nodded, a hunted look on his face.
Ethan stepped outside, following Connie to her temporary office.
"What's going on, Connie?" He asked as the two entered her office.
Connie handed him Cal's recent CT scan.
"Is that Diffuse Axonol Injury?" Ethan asked, he'd only heard of it once and that was when himself, Cal and Will were in Holby university, training to be doctors.
Connie nodded. "As you may well know, there is no surgery we can offer Caleb, but in his case, his head injury is mild, so it can be treated with speech therapy and couseling."
Ethan swallowed the lump in his throat. He tried to pretend that Cal was a normal patient, but he wasn't, it was his brother, his baby brother. The brother that he had soothed at night when Matilda was too tired to do so.
"Would you like me to tell him?" Connie asked.
"No. No, thank you." Ethan knew it had to come from him. Thank you, Mrs Beachaump,"
"Connie, please" She said, she never liked her staff using her first name while they were on shift, but as Ethan had been granted compassionate leave she didn't mind if he called her by her first name.
Ethan nodded again, and left her office, not wanting to leave Cal on his own any longer. Ethan sat in the chair he'd been sitting in since Cal was moved. There was silence between the two until Cal spoke:
"Ethan?"
"Yes, mate?"
"What happened?" Cal asked.
"Err..." Ethan stuttered, before taking a deep breath, knowing that this was harder on Cal than it was for him. "Remember the explosion?"
Cal shook his head. "What explosion?"
"There was an explosion you and Jess were trapped. " Ethan replied. "She's fine. Adam's looking after her. "
Cal rested his head against his pillows. "No. "
"How about I bring a board game in?" Ethan suggested, thinking that it might help if he had some of his things around him.
Cal nodded and Ethan left, promising to be back soon.
Letting himself in too the two bed- roomed flat he owned on the Farmead Estate, Ethan walked in to his brothers room. He got him some clean clothes, anything to get him out of the hospital gown, his iPod in case he wanted to listen to music.
Ethan then walked in to his own room, looking at the shelf were his childhood board games were stacked, monoploy, scrabble, Cludeo. Ethan reached for Cludeo and put it in the bag he'd packed for Cal. He walked out in to the hallway, grabbing his keys on the way and locked the door, heading down the stairs to his car.
"I'm back" Ethan said, walking in to Cal's room.
"Goo-" Ethan looked at Cal, realising he was struggling with his speach, but also realising that it was good that he was trying.
Ethan patted Cal's hand. "It's OK, Cal. "
Cal just scowled.
"How about I set up Scrabble?" Ethan suggested, getting the game out of the bag. He placed the board on the hospital table and dealt out six letters for each of then.
When trying to spell the word "Help" Cal got the "H" and "P" the wrong way round and frustrated, he threw the Scrabble piece across the floor.
"It'll get easier, Cal. " Ethan said, picking the piece up.
"That's easy for you to say," Cal said.
"You've had a brain injury. It affects how you can do things. "
"I feel useless. " Cal snapped.
"Your not useless. " Ethan said. "It'll just take time. " He said as he kissed his brothers forehead.
Thank you for reading. Next chapter: Cal's discharged from St. James.
