Mukai was bored.
"Come on, Mukai, baby pose." Said Mama as she tried to get Mukai to stand up. She kicked mama away as hard as she could. She wanted to PLAY! Couldn't mama see that? This was boring! There was a whole yard out there with toys but mama wanted her to stay here and be boring!
Everyone else was much more fun than mama!
"No!" shouted Mukai
"Yes." said Mama
"No!" said Mukai. Mama didn't always listen. Sometimes you had to tell her things a bunch of times before she did what you said. The others weren't like that. Whenever she was hungry she got food. Whenever she was bored she had someone to play with. Whenever she wanted to watch TV someone turned it on for her. Whenever she wanted to play games someone fixed her phone.
Why couldn't mama be like that others?
"Mukai, I said yes, now come on. You need to get centered." Said Mama
"No! Play!" shouted Mukai. She got up and shouted right in Mama's ace so she heard. She didn't know what she was saying, that was the problem. A lot of the time people had no idea what she was saying. Like when she told Ryou to give her blue and he got her other colors. She knew her colors and Ryou hadn't brought back the blue and…and she wanted blue! She wanted blue right now! She wanted blue and she wanted to play and she wanted-
Hey! Shigeko!
"Shige…ko!" shouted Mukai. She stopped crying and ran away from Mama. Shigeko knew where the blue was! Shigeko was blue. She was pink too. Sho was red like she was red. Mama was orange. Ryou was different red. Mine was green. Hatori was…a color…and Mine was a color too and Shibata…what color was Shibata!
There were too many colors!
"Hi Mukai, why are you crying?" asked Shigeko as she got down on the grass. Mukai kicked her. There were too many colors! She was too many colors! She didn't want all of these colors!
"Too much!" shouted Mukai
"What's too much?" asked Shigeko
"Too much! Too much colors!" said Mukai
"Do you want me to get your red coat? That way they'll match your overalls and you won't be wearing so many colors." Said Shigeko
"No coat! Blue!" shouted Mukai
"Oh, sorry, I'll go get your blue coat then." Said Shigeko. She wasn't listening! Mukai didn't want her blue coat she wanted some blue to drink! She didn't even wanted a coat! She hated this thing. The metal part dug into her skin and the sleeves trapped her hands…she tried to take it off but it was stuck! She pulled at the bottom until it was over her head but now she couldn't see! It was dark like nighttime now and she wanted it to be light and she couldn't get out and-Mama! Where was Mama?!What was she going to do now without Mama!? Shige wasn't helping! Only Mama could help!
"Mama! Help!" shouted Mukai as she ran and fell down….and now she had an owie! She could feel the owie growing on her leg! The owie would get big and then the red stuff would come out and she didn't want red inside of her, she wanted blue! She wanted blue inside of herself but there was red and she could feel it coming out but she couldn't see it and she knew that she would never see anything ever again and it was all the coat's fault! It was so bad! It was bad and…and it was eating her! She was going to be food and-
Mama was here!
"There you go, baby, there you go." Said Mama as she pulled the coat off of Mukai's face. She couldn't see but then she could so now she was ok…but she didn't want this coat…and she didn't want Mama! Mama said that she was a baby and she wasn't! She was a big girl now!
"Not a baby! Big girl now! You a baby!" shouted Mukai. Mama made that face she made sometimes but didn't say anything…Mukai didn't like that face….and she didn't like the colors that Mama was making either! That was too much orange and now Mukai was making too much red and there was already too much pink and blue….there were too many colors! Why did there have to be so many colors!?
"Is she ok?" asked Shigeko
"She's fine, I think she's just a little overstimulated. Your brother spent the whole morning playing airplane with her and coloring. She just needs to center herself so she can take a nap." Said Mama. Mukai slapped as hard as she could. Mama wanted her to NAP!? No way! She was never taking a nap, ever, not even if Mama asked again!
"Too many colors!" shouted Mukai. Mama and Shigeko were too close and when they were this close all of their colors showed and it was too much! She only wanted blue! Why couldn't anyone understand that she only wanted blue!?
"I think she wants me to dress her in something else. I can, I just did laundry." Said Shigeko
"No! No new clothes!" said Mukai. She didn't want clothes at all! These clothes were itchy and they trapped her in them and tried to eat her! Why would she want different ones!?
"No, she doesn't want to change…it was hard enough getting her dressed this morning. She just needs a nap." Said Mama
"No! No nap! Not tired!" said Mukai. She hoped that mama understood her, she hoped that mama actually listened to her this time. She didn't need a nap. She wasn't tired. She wanted to play. She wanted to have some blue to drink. She didn't want to do anything other than play and drink blue. That wasn't so hard to understand.
"See? When she says that she's not tired then that definitely means that she's tired." Said Mama
"But then….what if she really isn't tired?" asked Shigeko
"Trust me. She's tired." Said Mama. Mukai didn't like the way mama's voice sounded there…or the way her colors looked. Mama wasn't listening! Shigeko wasn't listening! Nobody was listening! Maybe Mukai just wasn't yelling loudly enough….
"Not tired! Not tired at all!" shouted Mukai. There. Now she was loud enough that mama and Shigeko should have been able to hear her…but of course they hadn't. They were just looking at her now and they weren't saying that she didn't have to take a nap and nobody was getting her any blue either!
"But she just said that she wasn't. What if she just isn't tired? Sometimes when I try to put Sho to bed and he's not tired he gets like this. He yells and gets upset. When he gets like that I just tell him that he can stay up for another hour, it usually works. Our mom used to just make us stay in our room until we got tired but Sho never liked that. He used to jump on the bed and throw our toys around and break things…but he's gotten much better now." Said Shigeko
"When she starts acting up like this she's definitely tired, trust me on this, and if I keep her up for another hour then lunch is going to be late and then she'll be even more upset then she is now" Said Mama
"Not tired! No listen! Not tired!" shouted Mukai. She didn't know why they weren't listening to her! Grownups never listened to her. They always just kept on talking. She didn't want to talk! She didn't want to do anything other than play and drink some blue!
"I can just give her lunch now. Sometimes when Sho gets upset I just give him something to snack. He gets mad when he's hungry, so does dad, and I guess that Mukai does too since she's our sister and all." said Shigeko
"She can't eat this early. If I feed her this early and then put her down for her nap her reflux is going to kick in and then she'll be in the worst mood you've ever seen. Shigeko…I have this, ok? Why don't you go and hang out at your house with your brother…or at your house with Minegishi. Just make sure that it's at your house. Shimazaki is…there's a lot going on over here." Said Mama
"Ryou! Want Ryou!" shouted Mukai. Shimazaki meant Ryou. Sometimes things had two names. Ryou was fun! He always knew exactly what she meant and he always brought her back something even if it wasn't always blue…but she wanted blue! She wanted blue right now but nobody was giving her any!
"Shimazaki's busy, Mukai, but we can have fun. We can go and hang out with my friend Minori." Said Shigeko. Mukai hit her on the stomach. She didn't want to see Minori! She didn't like Minori! Minori was always making her put on clothes and pinched her cheeks and brushed her hair and…and she didn't like Minori at all! She didn't want Minori! She wanted to play! She wanted blue to drink! She wanted Ryou! She didn't want to be here anymore!
"Don't take her anywhere. She's already had a lot of excitement today." Said Mama
"She hasn't had too much excitement, there's no such thing as too much excitement. Sometimes when Sho won't go to sleep I play with him until he gets tired. That way he gets all of his energy out. Mukai might be the same way. I know that dad is, sometimes I have to hang out with him all night to get him to sleep. When we were little I used to let him chase me around and use me for target practice and stuff but he doesn't do that anymore." Said Shigeko
"Well I don't want her running around Tokyo with two twelve year olds right now, alright? She needs to wind down so she can take her nap." Said Mama
"No nap!" shouted Mukai. She had feet in her shoes and they could take her wherever she chose and she wanted to go away…so that was what she did. She ran away from Mama and Shigeko. She ran as fast as she could and didn't stop until she was inside of the house. She slammed the door as hard as she could just in case Mama and Shigeko decided to follow her.
They were fast runners.
Grownups could run fast, fast enough to catch her, so she had to make sure that they couldn't come in. If the door was closed then they were going to have a very hard time coming into this house. The door was high up. Not as high as they had been at her old house. Those had been some good doors. She had closed the door on Matsuo once and he couldn't get back into his house for a lot of shows, which was a very long time. She was safe now, there was no way Mama and Shigeko were coming in here.
Now she just had to find Ryou!
She could feel his colors and she could hear his music. He was close…he would bring her the blue drink! She ran from the door…but then she couldn't run anymore! Something had picked her up and…and now the floor was far away…and it was crushing her stomach…and it hurt! She didn't like this! She shouted and kicked and bit and made her colors very bright but nothing worked! She was stuck here forever!
She couldn't get out!
She was being carried….there was a big leaf carrying her…oh no! Now the plants were trying to eat her too? Fist her shirt and now this! She tried to get out but she couldn't! The leaves were carrying her over to the couch…Mine was there Mine would save her! Mine was a good friend and Mukai knew that Mine would save her from being eaten by the left…and they knew where Ryou was too! They always knew where Ryou was!
Yay! Mine!
"Mine! Help!" shouted Mukai. Mine didn't say anything, the left just brought her closer to them. The leaf held her high in the air, so high that her feet didn't touch the ground no matter how much kicking she did. She tried to kick for the ground but she just kicked herself up higher and higher until-oh no! She felt something touching her foot! The leaf was getting her and now she would never get away and she would only have one foot!
Oh. It just took her shoe.
That wasn't good at all! She needed her shoe! You always had to wear shoes and also these had lights on them! That made them special since nobody else had shoes with lights. They had Elsa on them too. They were Elsa shoes and she liked Rapunzel better than Elsa but she liked Elsa shoes better than Rapunzel shoes…and she didn't even have any Rapunzel shoes and….and….
Mine was taking her shoes!
"My shoes! My shoes over here! Mine shoes over there!" said Mukai. She had to tell Minegishi that there were lots of shoes by the door…but Minegishi didn't listen to her. She kicked as hard as she could and shouted as loud as she could and even spat but Mine didn't listen. Mine wouldn't listen and now…and now Mukai didn't have any shoes at all!
But at least her feet were on the ground.
The leaf was still holding onto her in the worst hug ever but at least the ground was back. Now she wasn't big Mukai anymore, she wanted to be all the time Mukai…and she couldn't be all the time Mukai if Mine didn't help her!
Why wasn't Mine helping her!?
"Help! Help! Help!" shouted Mukai. Mine didn't help her. Mine just held her shoes and looked at her. What was the matter with the grownups today!? Nobody understood her….nobody!
"I'll help you. Here." Said Mine. The leaf let her go and Minegishi tried to make her hold onto her shoes. She didn't want her shoes! She threw them on the ground. Good. Now the ground could have them.
"Stop that." Said Mine
"No shoes! No want shoes!" said Mukai
"Well I don't want them either you little monster so why don't you just pick them up and put them in the genkan with everyone else's?" asked Mine
"No!" said Mukai. She didn't want her own shoes or everyone else's! She wanted to play with Ryou! She wanted to drink blue drink! She wanted to play airplane! She wanted Mine to read the book to her! She wanted Mama to play with her! She wanted Sho to play with her! She wanted to play games on her phone! She wanted everyone to play with her right now! Right over there!
"Yes." said Mine
"No! Read! Play! Read and play!" shouted Mukai. Mine didn't listen. The leaf let her go and then Mine threw her shoes over at the shoe place with the others.
"I'm not going to read to you and I'm not going to play with you. Now go away. You're giving me a headache." Said Mine. Mukai reached over to slap Mine but her hand got grabbed! It wasn't nice!
"Let go! Not nice!" shouted Mukai
"And you hitting me was?" asked Mine
"Going to hit you!" shouted Mukai. She tried again but Mine grabbed onto her other arm and held her. Mine held her too tight…too big…too strong! Mine was too big and too strong and…and she had to get away!
"You….let go! Let go! Want Ryou! Want to play! Want-" said Mukai. Mine let go of her arm and the leaf came back. The leaf pushed her away from Mine and the couch.
"Then go." Said Mine. The couch was safe…and the leaf was big and scary and gave big, bad hugs like it was big and bad…she ran. She didn't want the leaf to get her! She had to go where it was safe! She could see Ryou's colors and she could hear his music and…and his door was closed! Doors were hard! Doors were tall and hard and she didn't know how to get in…but she was going to try!
She reached up.
She made her colors come out. She reached out with her colors and pulled on the knob until it turned. The knob was slippery and the door was heavy…but she could do it! She could do it! She had to be like the blue train. Caterpillars told her that story. I think. I can. I think. I can.
Mukai thought. She could. The door opened.
She ran through the door and slammed it shut behind her. Now Mine wouldn't catch her! She was safe! She kicked the door a couple of times just to make sure that it stayed closed. She didn't want to get caught. Mine wasn't her friend anymore….but Ryou was! He was the best grownup ever! He was always nice and fun! And he had good music…and he was already playing!
She wanted to play too!
"Hey Mukai, get on my back. Come on, climb the giant." Said Ryou. Mukai loved climb the giant! Sometimes Ryou played this game where he laid down and she climbed on his back and then he pushed himself up and down. He was the giant but not the kind that ate people and made their bones into bread. He didn't live in the castle in the sky and he wasn't going to eat her.
He was a good friend!
"Up and down! Climb the giant!" shouted Mukai. This was so fun! She jumped onto his back and he started going up and down! And the music was loud! Mukai sang the song and kicked and laughed. This was the best game ever!
"Goo goo g'joob! Goo goo g'joob!" shouted Mukai as Ryou went up and down. She kicked him and he didn't say anything mean. She held onto his back. The dragon was scary but Ryou would keep her safe from it…but just to be safe she would scratch it-
She started to fall.
But then the colors saved her! Ryou's colors saved her! She held onto his back and he got back to going up and down! This was great! She was tall and then she was small and then she was everyday Mukai and then she was tall Mukai and then she was short Mukai and then she normal, everyday sized Mukai! And Ryou was singing too! Where was Mama? She liked the up and down game too! Mama needed to play up and down with her right now!
This was the best game ever!
"Umpa, umpa, stick it up your jumper! Umpa, umpa, stick it up your jumper!" sang Ryou
"No jump! Up and down! Climb the giant right now over there! Mama too!" said Mukai. If anyone would have listened to her then it would have been Ryou…but he didn't listen! He stopped all the up and down and then she was stuck being tall Mukai! This was boring…and then it got even worse! He put her down! Now she was normal sized Mukai again…and she didn't want to be!
"In a minute, I need a coke break." Said Ryou. He stood up and went over to his desk. Mukai ran up to him. She didn't like it when the dragon looked at her. There were two of them. The one on the back was mean and wanted to eat her. The one on the front was nice and wanted to be her friend. The one on the back was watching her…she had to get up high. She climbed into the chair by the desk and made sure that she was only looking at the dragon on Ryou's front. He was a very nice dragon, that was why he lived on a very nice person.
A very nice person who had flour!
"For me! For me!" shouted Mukai as she tried to put her hands in the four on the desk. Ryou was playing with it…and he wasn't sharing! He was making little lines and houses on his desk with a piece of plastic. She reached over and tried to take it from him when he stopped her from putting her hands in the flour. He was being mean!
"For ME! For Mukai!" shouted Mukai
"Sorry, can't help you kid. No coke for you." Said Ryou
"No coke! Flour!" said Mukai as she reached for the flour. He picked her up and put her down on the floor…and now she was everyday sized Mukai…and the back dragon was looking at her!
"No flower for you either. No coke, no meth, no molly, no flower, no concentrate, no vape pens, no nothing. Not until you're nine or ten, alright? If I give you this then you'll die. Your little heart will explode and then you'll be dead and if you're dead then I won't be able to hang out with you anymore. You get it?" asked Ryou
"Coke for me!" shouted Mukai
"Yeah, you are definitely Mob's sister." Said Ryou. She knew that word, Mob, it meant Shigeko, and she knew the word sister. It meant girl. She didn't know what he meant….but she did know that she wanted to play with the flour! She wanted to play with the straw too! She wanted to play…whatever that game was! It looked fun!
She could tell.
Ryou's colors were really happy after he finished playing with the flour. She kicked his leg. The back dragon was looking at her…but she could beat it…she just needed to be taller! She went back to the chair and tried to sit in it. She didn't even get the chance, though, because Ryou picked her up and started to bounce her up and down.
This wasn't the same up and down game.
"Come on. Mukai, come on! Don't you want to dance?" laughed Ryou. Mukai kicked the dragon on the front of him. He stopped moving and looked at her. She could tell that he was looking at her even though his eyes were always closed even though he wasn't sleeping at all.
"Blue." Said Mukai
"What's that my little friend? Feeling blue are you? Well I've got the non-coke based cure for that." Said Ryou. He held her in one of his arms and opened his secret drawer, the one that she was supposed to keep a secret. She made sure, when he told her about it, to bring everyone to the drawer so they knew that it was a secret.
"Hang on….I've got…huh. I could have sworn I had a shit ton of KitKat in here. I don't supposed I can interest you in a dinner candle?" asked Ryou. She kicked him. She didn't want dinner! She wanted blue!
"Blue! Drink blue now!" shouted Mukai. Ryou put her down on the floor and then sat across from her. He leaned in close and looked at her. She pulled his hair.
"You're right to do that, Mukai, you are. You see I have no idea what blue even is so I'm afraid that I can't help you….fuck me….I suck. I'm useless…I can't even help you…no wonder Mob doesn't want anything to do with me…no wonder Toshi doesn't want anything to do with me…" said Ryou. Mukai didn't know what he was talking about.
"Nothing to do. Blue." Said Mukai. There. Maybe this time he'd understand her. He pulled her hand from his hair and nodded.
"You're right. I have nothing else to do so I might as well try. You know what, I'll accept your challenge. You just stay here and don't touch my coke. I'll be right back." Said Ryou before he disappeared. Mukai didn't like that at all. She closed her eyes and opened them…but he was still gone! This wasn't fair! She wanted him back and she wanted blue and she didn't have him and she didn't have any blue! She cried. She threw her head back and cried-
-wait.
Flour! She had wanted to play with the flour and now there it was! She pushed the chair up to the desk and climbed up. It took a couple of tries to pull herself up. She did her best, she needed help, but nobody was there to help her. She did it on her own. She was a big girl now. She wasn't small. I think. I can. Like from the book Caterpillars read to her.
She thought. She could.
"I think. I can." Said Mukai as she stood up in the chair. She could see the flour now. It was in little lines and houses on the desk…oh! There was a mirror under it! She reached over and grabbed the mirror…but then all the flour fell on the ground….but she had the mirror! But it was heavy….she held onto it with both hands but it was too big and too heavy…
And then it fell on the ground.
The glass broke. Now there were a whole lot of Mukai's looking up at her. She looked down. She didn't know if she could get stuck with the other Mukai's. The leaf had been bad enough…if she got stuck down there then nobody would be able to get her out. She didn't know where Ryou was or mama or Sho or Mine or Shibata or Sho or Hatroi or Seri or Caterpillars…she was all alone…and if she went down there then she could get stuck….but she didn't want to be up here anymore!
It was too much!
"Mama!" shouted Mukai as she started to cry. Where was mama?! Mama was going to save her…she had to!
"Where Mama! Mukai here! Mukai over there….Mukai over here! I'm over here!" shouted Mukai. She didn't want to get eaten! She didn't want to get caught! She wanted to come down…and she wanted blue…and she wanted to play…but not with all the other Mukai's! They were coming to get her! She was red and they were red and…and now there were more colors…
Ryou came back!
"Mother fucker!" shouted Ryou. Mukai laughed he jumped up and down. She laughed and jumped too…but then the chair started to fall. His colors caught her. She reached out and tried to caught him with her colors…but her colors weren't big enough…but there was a lot of red…his red…and he red that was coming out of him….oh no!
"Owie! Owie! Ryou owie!" shouted Mukai
"Yeah, yeah, I know. I have an owie…you broke Toshi's mirror…fuck! Toshi needs that to see the back of their head….and there's glass in my fucking foot…..fuck me!" said Ryou
"Fuck me! Fuck me! Fuck me!" shouted Mukai
"No, no, don't say that. People are already weirded out because they think I want to fuck Mob for some reason. I mean I'm not opposed to the idea, Mob's really got it going on, you know? I mean I guess you don't because she's your sister and you're two but, yeah, Mob really has it going on. She's hot, she smart, she's nice, she's always thinking about other people. I fucking like her a lot but it's not a sex thing…but of course everyone thinks it is. It's not like she's a kid, you're a kid, she's Mob…but it doesn't matter. She doesn't want anything to do with me and Toshi says that my feelings for her violate their boundaries…I mean what even is that?" asked Ryou
"No story." Said Mukai. She didn't want a story, she wanted to be saved and she wanted to play and she wanted blue…lots of blue! There was lots of blue drink and other colors in the bag on the floor. She tried to jump down but some colors caught her…and now she was stuck again!
"You're right, there's no story to it. Mob's just not that into me…well not as much as I'm into her, and that's fine. I know when I'm being ignored and, yeah, I can handle it. I…I'm not the little kid here, you are….and….and I'm fine. Well, no, my foot is pretty fucked up and also maybe I shouldn't have robbed a Costco half naked…that might come back to bite me." Said Ryou
"Bite you! Bite you!" shouted Mukai as she tried to bite at the colors that held her in place.
"Yeah, shit always comes back to bite me. Shit that I didn't even know would. I mean, ok, I know that I was banished. I know what banished means. I know…I knew that I had a lot of shit coming to me…and I knew what I was doing bringing Mob into that. Of course Suzuki purged everyone…your dad gets shit done. Remember that. Your dad will straight up murder anyone who fucks with you." Said Ryou
"Dad?" asked Mukai as she stopped biting. She knew that word. That was another word for Caterpillars…where was Caterpillars? She couldn't see his colors…he always had the best books…and he always played the airplanes game with her…where was Caterpillars?!
"Yeah, your dad. He's out of his fucking mind but-" said Ryou
"Caterpillars!? Where Caterpillars!?" asked Mukai
"I don't know, dead? It's November. I'm pretty sure they die in the winter….wait….if they die in the winter then where the fuck do butterflies come from?" asked Ryou
"No butter! No flies! Caterpillars!" said Mukai
"Right, right, you want caterpillars. I don't know where they go in the winter…fuck! Fuck me. I don't know…you know what I just realized? I don't know. I don't know a lot of shit. I don't know where the caterpillars go. I don't know where a lot of things go…and people…and kids. Did I ever tell you that I have kids? I mean I think that I do. I almost did…I'd probably be a pretty shitty dad…or maybe I'd be a good one. I don't know. My dad tried to kill me so maybe I don't even know what normal even is." Said Ryou
"Where even is!?" asked Mukai. She didn't know where Caterpillars even is…even were….where was Caterpillars?!
"I know, right? What even is normal? Normal is boring as hell and I don't do boring but…but maybe everything is normal? Like it's subjective? What do you think?" asked Ryou
"Want down!" shouted Mukai
"Right, right, I've been holding onto you for a while….looks like someone's pissed off. You should stop. You know you should. If anyone should be pissed off it's me. You got my coke everywhere, you know, and you broke Toshi's mirror too. You know I should be mad at you…but I could never be mad at you. There's no point in getting pissed at a kid. My dad…he was pissed at me for being born…but I'm not my dad….and I guess that I'm not your dad either." Said Ryou
"Not my dad." Said Mukai. She didn't know where Caterpillars was himself and Ryou was himself…they were different people.
"Right…yeah….I'm not your dad…and no matter how much I wish I was I never will be. Not unless your dad and I are eskimo brothers…and you have no idea what that means…and you probably shouldn't repeat that either. Everyone already thinks…you know what, fuck everyone else! I know it's not a sex thing and that's enough." Said Ryou
"That's enough." Said Mukai. She didn't want to be held. She wanted to walk….and she wanted the blue drink…right now! She wanted it and…and it was far!
"Right….right! That's enough. This is enough. You're not my kid but what do I want a kid of my own for? If I fuck up a kid of my own then I'm just a shitty dad. If you end up fucked up when you grow up then it's Suzuki's fault. Yeah…yeah! You're really smart, you know that? Yeah…more proof that you aren't mine. I'm a fucking moron." Said Ryou. Mukai reached down…she was still regular sized Mukai…she was too little to reach down so far!
"Blue! Want blue!" said Mukai
"Blue…right! Well you're in luck. I just took everything that I could get my hands on so, you know, go nuts…but not in here. There's so much broken glass and you don't know how to put up a barrier. No you don't, no you don't." said Ryou
"No…no blue…yes blue!" said Mukai
"I know, I know, you want blue….well come on, let's have someone who knows their colors tell us which one is blue." Said Ryou. She knew her colors…and she didn't want to disappear…but they did. She wasn't scared, not really, because the next thing she knew she was in Fuckuda's house where the ham-hams lived! And Sho was there too!
