Jack worked on the spaceship every moment he could spare, often with Tosh, Ianto, or both of them helping him, going over every inch of it, noting what components were missing, and rummaging in the archives for whatever suitable parts they could find.
The Doctor proved surprisingly willing to help out when Jack contacted him, bringing the standard propulsion unit for the type of craft, along with power cubes, auxiliary power generator, and a selection of spare parts, then sticking around for a few days to lend a hand. Even with the extra help, it still took almost eight months to get Torchwood's shiny new toy spaceworthy and stocked with all the supplies they'd need for her maiden voyage.
Finally all the work was done, checked, and double-checked. Jack beamed at his team.
"What d'you say we take her for a spin? Not too far, just a quick jaunt to the nearest inhabited planet."
"Count me in," Ianto said, looking almost as eager as Jack.
"Me too," Tosh agreed.
"Can Rhys come too?"
"The more the merrier! Owen, coming or not?"
"Ah hell, why not? Better than being left behind."
"Good choice. All aboard for the trip of a lifetime!"
